About WatkinsX VIN Decoder

WatkinsX VIN Decoder turns a vehicle identification number into the car it describes, then shows everything the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publishes about that model year: recalls, owner complaints, defect investigations and manufacturer service bulletins. It’s free, with no accounts or ads.

How a VIN works

Every car and truck sold in North America since 1981 has a 17-character VIN. The letters I, O and Q are never used, so they can’t be confused with 1 and 0.

The 9th character is a check digit. Each character is converted to a number, multiplied by a weight for its position, and the total divided by 11; the remainder (or X for 10) must match. That catches most typos, which is why this site tells you when the check digit is wrong.

Sources

VINs are decoded with the standalone vPIC (Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing) database, which runs NHTSA’s own decoder. Recalls, complaints, investigations and manufacturer communications come from the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation flat files. Both are works of the U.S. government and in the public domain. WatkinsX is not affiliated with NHTSA.

Recalls and complaints are matched to a vehicle by make, model and model year, so they describe the model, not your individual car. To see whether a specific VIN still needs a recall repair, use NHTSA’s VIN check or ask a dealer.

Privacy

No accounts, ads or third-party trackers. VINs you decode are kept only in your browser’s local storage. The server counts how often each make, model and year is looked up, without the VIN, to power “Popular vehicles”.
