The defect
Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Tec (Eaton Cummins) is recalling certain Endurant transmissions, part numbers EEO-17F112C, EEO-16F112C and EEO-18F112C and PACCAR transmissions, part numbers PO-14F112C, PO-15F112C, PO-16F112C, PO-17F112C and PO-18F112C. The transmission control module (TCM) may allow the engine to crank briefly even if the transmission shifter is not in neutral. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence/Starter Interlock/Transmission Braking Effect."
The risk
If the transmission is not in neutral when the engine begins running, there may be unintended vehicle movement, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Eaton Cummins will notify the affected vehicle manufacturers who will file and conduct recalls to install updated TCM software, free of charge. The recall began on December 15, 2017. Owners may contact Eaton Cummins at 1-269-342-3184.
