Am General Hummer

Reported Aug 18, 1995463 vehicles affectedAM GENERAL CORPORATIONBuilt Nov 1, 1994 – Aug 1, 1995

The defect

Under high ambient temperatures (greater than 95 degrees fahrenheit) and the fuel tank level between 1/4 and 1/2 full, the fuel tank internal pressure can increase causing the tank to expand. Tank expansion causes an interference between the fuel tank protective shield and the propeller shaft resulting a hole in the fuel tank at the point of shield-to-shaft contact.

The risk

This condition can cause fuel leakage, and if an ignition source IS present, could result in a fire.

The remedy

Dealers will install a supplemental fuel tank venting system on these vehicles.
