Safety record from NHTSA: recalls, owner complaints, investigations and service bulletins.
These records cover every 2006 Chrysler Town And Country Lwb. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
After filling fuel tank, engine would stall while in motion, stopped or at any speed on a road soon after leaving the fuel station. the engine stalling only occurred after a fill up and was not affected by weather conditions, fuel vendor or fuel amount pumped. No engine lights or codes showed up after the incidents. This IS a safety hazard especially while driving.
Futura 2000 lte p215/65tr16 RM6V xac 3712 I have a receipt dated 6-18-2016 for 2 tires installed on the rear of my 2006 town and country van. both tires have recently failed, tread separation. the tire in may was a blow out at 70mph on interstate 10, the next tire was not a blowout. in all my life I have never had a tire blow out and never had two of the same tires fail so close to each other. mileage on my van at installation was 102130 and mileage at failure was 144258 and the next tire at 145258. I would like to be contacted by your quality assurance office and I also want more than the pathetic 25 dollar and 10 dollar off on replacement of these tires. yes all tires were installed at pepboys, in niceville, fl #1535 850-678-0887.
Filled up our van with gas. Left the gas station to cut across oncoming traffic. The lane was clear so I went. As I accelerated the van shuddered and cut off in the middle of traffic!. Lost all power, steering wheel locked up, and the engine cut off. luckily we were not in a head on collision or were t-boned in the side. My wife and 1 year old were in the car and could have easily been killed. immediately I went and started doing some research on what happened. Come to find it a lot of people are having this problem with these vans. The problem IS a design flaw in the gas system of these vans. I found multiple people who are experiencing the same thing. to date there have been no recalls on this issue. multiple people are experiencing the same problems and you can see their stories found here: http://en.allexperts.com/q/chrysler-repair-807/f/stalling-refueling.htm also this problem has been documented: found here : http://ricksfreeautorepairadvice.com/engine-stalls-after-filling-tank-chrysler-minivan/ now that you have been notified of this, I hope there IS a recall order for this to be fixed. it IS only a matter of time before someone IS killed due to this design and engineering flaw. maybe someone already has been, and didnt live to tell the story. All I know IS it doesn't get much worse than losing all power steering, acceleration, and the engine shutting off. hopefully someones death or an accident with serious injuring IS not what it takes for a major recall to happen. thank you for your concern and keeping us safe.
Stalls at stop after full gas tank refueling, doesn't stall if not completely full. *tr
The map light bulbs made incomplete electrical contact. this caused arching between the contacts on both passenger and driver side map lights. the plastic then melted and resulted in a fire inside the map light assembly (oem wagoner part no. J5-pc579). *tr
Stopped to inflate tires. as I started to remove the left rear tire cap it the stem blew out in my hand. I changed the tire but the additional weight blew out the second stem this time on the left front tire. I shot into the curb. by the time I got it up on the jack the right front tire stem blew and the right rear started to lose air. I had to replace 2 sensors. the right rear had been replaced already. *tr
The catalytic converter was replaced so nys inspection could be passed. in may of 2014 I was told that it IS bad again & needs a replacement but the shop can't get it because the regulations have changed to use ca standards and the unit us not available. this us resulting in unreasonable expense. *tr
While conducted an oil change, I noticed that both rack and pinion boots are wet with power steering fluid. this IS a low mileage vehicle and am disappointed that the steering IS already leaking fluid. I have not had this checked with a mechanic as of yet but I imagine that after reading complaints here and on other sites, I will end up having to replace the entire rack and pinion assembly to correct this leak. a simple boot replacement will not be sufficient as dirt and water will already have damaged the assembly. I would recommend having chrysler conduct a recall and replacing these with quality components at no expense to the vehicle owners. *Tr
The van was purchased used in 2007 with approximately 4,000 miles from flemington chrysler in nj. at approximately 10,000 miles, the rack was found to be leaking and it was replaced under warranty. soon after, the steering seemed a little tight but we chalked it up to the new components. fast forward to 2012, the van now has 80,000 miles and the steering has begun to whine, groan and shudder. I have flushed the fluid and now replaced the pump. the whine and shudder are still there so it looks like the rack has failed again. the van can easily become a safety problem and chrysler should be ashamed. definitely the last chrysler product I buy which IS too bad because they've put out some really unique, good looking cars lately. My family's safety IS more important thanks. *tr
Discovered that valve stem had broken off. Valve stem IS attached to TPMS sensor and replacement valve stems are not offered. The breaking of the valve stems seems a common occurrence. Very disconcerting. This happened while driving, even though I did not notice until later and luckily, the tire did not deflate rapidly. *tr
At 49,000 miles the check engine light comes on. Knowing I probably couldn't afford the repairs at our dealership, I decided to diagnose and repair the vehicle myself. The check engine code read p0480, a code noting a problem with the cooling fan system. After researching the code online, I realized that I was not the only one with this problem. It turns out the town and country, in winter weather, tends to have cooling fans freeze up. As a result, the cooling fan relay will blow out. As I waited for my new relay to arrive in the mail ($47 online, $90 at your dealership) the check engine light turned off. Thinking that maybe the vehicle had made a clean trip, I checked the computer again. P0480 was still stored within. The next day I received my new relay via mail, and went to install the part. Upon calling brookdale luther's service department to acquire the location of the relay on my vehicle, the service employee, though very helpful, noted that chrysler new of the problem and that I would need an update to my vehicles computer ($120). In response to my question why, I was told that the computer needed to know when the fan motor was jammed to turn the motor off before blowing out the relay. So I could keep buying relays, or pay the $120. My question IS this. If chrysler knows of a problem that could cause a vehicle to eventually overheat, which in some cases could cause a fire, why wouldn't they issue a recall. *Tr
The airbag warning light in my 2006 chrysler town & country touring van IS constantly illuminated. It first became illuminated while driving in a heavy rainstorm earlier this year and it would then go off and on intermittently during operation. The airbag light now stays on continually whenever I run the vehicle. I believe this issue to clearly be due to the circumstances contained within chrysler's "safety improvement campaign J38" and the nhtsa campaign ID #10v008000/nhtsa action #rq09003. My vehicle was also built within the time frame described within this campaign. When I contacted chrysler, they informed me that my vehicle was not a part of this campaign with no further explanation. I do not see how this can be and I do not feel that I should have to pay to correct this safety issue where chrysler clearly admits that it has a problem with its front airbag sensors on the make and model for this 2006 year. Any assistance that you can provide in a remedy to this situation would be appreciated. Thank you. *Tr
2006 chrysler town & country MINI van. When driving in the rain or through standing water over 1 inch deep the serpentine belt gets wet and you lose power steering immediately with no warning making it difficult if not impossible to turn. There are several reports on line of this happening as well as service centers saying they have even seen the vehicle throw the belt once it begins to slip. Chrysler does not have a fix for the problem nor does their customer service say there IS a recall of any sort. *Tr
Turn signal doesn't work, or else it will blink the opposite side than what IS turned on. *Tr
Because I am disabled I bought a used 2006 chrysler town and country lwb on august 2, 2010. on the way home the steering failed. Because this failure could have caused an accident, I took it to two dealers for estimates and wound up having the rack and pinion and loose tie rods replaced on august 9, 2010. *Tr
I've been experiencing issues with my a/c unit however, whether this issue has anything to do with what happened tonight or not, I don't know. I had gone to turn my 2006 chrysler town and country off while it was in park & it just started to roll backwards! I quickly reached for the gear shift to make sure it was in park but it already was! I then went to step on the brake & it still wouldn't stop! I have to believe this was nothing less than a major malfunction of some sort! the only thing that stopped me from rolling backwards was when my van crashed into my father-in-laws truck parked several feet behind me. this incident could have seriously hurt, even killed someone had they been in the way of my van rolling backwards! my 7 month old daughter was in my arms as this occurred. I had simply reached across from the passenger side to shut the engine off when all of this happened. I managed to jump one leg across to the drivers side to put my foot on the brake just to find out it wasn't going to stop the van from rolling backwards anyways! *Tr
2006 chrysler t&c: passenger sliding door will not unlock or open with remote or console switch. driver door switch will sometimes unlock to allow manual opening. *Tr
Left front drive axle shaft broke while driving slowly in destin florida while we were on vacation. if this had happened while I was driving 70 mph on the interstate I can imagine several tragic consequences. this van IS gently driven, well-maintained, and gave no warning of failure before-hand. *Tr
I started experiencing a loud whining sound coming out of the engine compartment area on an extended trip. I took the vehicle to the dealership while under warranty and they told me they could not replicate problem and suggested changing and flushing and complete service on transmission. while the whining sound subsided somewhat the sound still remained. now I come to find out the power steering pump IS leaking fluid all over the exhaust with a terrible and nauseating odor coming into the cabin area. not only IS this a potential fire hazard but also can be damaging to the respiratory system. the failure of this system IS premature at best and extremely hazardous at its worst. *Tr
Rear rotors delaminated causing severe vibration while braking and partial loss of braking ability in vehicle less than 4 yr old with 42K miles. I have retained the rotors and can send photographs if requested
In march of 2009 we purchased a 2006 chrysler town&country minivan from a chrysler dealer with 27K miles on it. I purchased an extended warranty. in the past month I realized the airbag light was on and this week I took it into the dealer for inspection and repair. the dealer contacted me and told me the 2 sensors in the front were rusted and corroded and that they no longer were sending a signal rendering them useless. they told me it would be $401 to fix. I told them I had never heard of airbag sensors corroding and that IS sounded like a safety issue. they told me it happens some times. I checked the internet and found that this IS a known issue with the 05/06 vans. I called the dealer and told them I was upset that they didn't tell me this was a known issue. they claimed that they never heard of it. based on what I have read, it sounds like chrysler IS doing a voluntary fix on about 350,000 vehicles. how do I get mine fixed without paying the $400? I already had to pay the dealer $100 just to diagnose the issue and $35 for a rental car because it was not a warranty or recall repair. *Tr
I hit a power pole and a ditch at 55mph. the car went airborn, hit the pole, spun around and landed on the passenger side. no airbags deployed. I filed a complaint with chrysler and they said that I did not decelerate fast enough for the airbags to go off. I was injured slightly but my seat belt was on. the key was jammed in the ignition and twisted and the car was shut down. the impact was that hard. I find it hard to believe that the airbags would not go off. the state trooper, insurance company and the man who owns the garage where the vehicle was towed all said in their professional opinion the airbags should have gone off. I don't know where to turn at this point. it IS my understanding from what I saw on the news that the airbag sensors may be being recalled in the near future. however, I don't feel like they addressed this issue at all. I was alone in the vehicle and I was on my home from work after a 12 1/2 hour shift. I did fall asleep and was less than one mile from my home. *Tr
Roof began to leak when car was about 1 year old. Leaks passenger side mainly occ. Drivers side. Dealer replaced pass side moon roof drain tube - did not fix leak. Rains seldom in so. Cal. So problem not noticed during dry season. There IS now intermittent electrical failures such as air-bag lights going on. Unable to turn on headlamps at times. *Tr
Seat belts "lock up" on my 2006 chrysler minivan. this problem happens occasionally - possibly 4-5 times in the past 12 months. the seat belts will neither retract nor advance but are instead locked in place. the belt ultimately seems to "correct itself" after a few hours of sitting. the problem IS exclusively to the seat belts in the middle row captain chairs. yet this IS where my children sit. in the past, we have needed to move their car seats to the rear to belt them in. I asked the dealership when it first happened in 2008 if this was covered under warranty, the dealership indicated it was not and we would have to pay to get it fixed. the last occurrence was december 2009. *Tr
My 2006 town and country MINI van has lost all power steering driving through modest puddles. this seems to happen when going through modest puddles (approximately 6 inches deep), and has only happened at low rates of speed. it has happened on 4 different occasions. when this happens, all steering IS completely lost. the vehicle quite literally will not steer at all, but then the vehicle eventually "comes out" of it - after driving and attempting to turn for maybe 1/8 mile. almost as if what ever moisture caused the problem evaporates. the last occurrence was this past january. *Tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
This defect petition evaluates July 7, 2014 allegations from an owner of a model year (MY) 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan that engine stall occurs in these vehicles without warning after refueling.The petitioner's vehicle is a Chrysler RS platform minivan.The RS platform includes MY 2003 through 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Caravan, Chrysler Town and Country and Chrysler Voyager minivans.NHTSA evaluated the petition by analyzing consumer complaints submitted to the Agency, analyzing field data, reviewing technical information provided in Chrysler's response to an Agency information request and testing an RS minivan identified by its owner as experiencing post-refuel engine stalls.After completing this evaluation, NHTSA has concluded that further investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists.The stalls occurring in these vehicles only occur immediately after filling up the fuel tank and happen at low engine speeds. The failure rate is low, even after 8 to 13 years of the vehicles being in service, and there are no reports of crashes or injuries resulting from the stall condition.In the Agency's view, additional investigation is unlikely to result in finding the existence of a safety-related defect in the subject vehicles.Given the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the Agency's safety mission, the petition is denied.This action does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency will take further action if warranted by future circumstances. More details concerning our review can be found in the Federal Register Notice for this action.The following 161 VOQs are included in the petition evaluation: 10209242, 10229468, 10240708, 10260923, 10275939, 10276532, 10296487, 10298175, 10328669, 10330144, 10346517, 10349789, 10354758, 10363689, 10372112, 10372368, 10372514, 10378031, 10379764, 10382938, 10387448, 10394063, 10398877, 10413918, 10418652, 10420924, 10427063, 10437525, 10445392, 10446902, 10470028, 10471249, 10473733, 10502231, 10503114, 10504260, 10509862, 10511988, 10512120, 10512385, 10512650, 10513147, 10538154, 10549841, 10551763, 10555188, 10555418, 10556754, 10565367, 10574012, 10574398, 10586555, 10587212, 10587559, 10593433, 10607841, 10607913, 10608922, 10615810, 10622468, 10628141, 10632112, 10632128, 10632172, 10632175, 10632231, 10632262, 10632266, 10632270, 10632305, 10632316, 10632326, 10632370, 10632385, 10632399, 10632492, 10632542, 10632765, 10632833, 10632928, 10633197, 10633281, 10633409, 10633421, 10633483, 10633507, 10637752, 10637804, 10637950, 10637975, 10638032, 10638289, 10638290, 10638401, 10638968, 10639218, 10639623, 10641157, 10641603, 10641614, 10641836, 10644339, 10644705, 10649713, 10649895, 10649932, 10650313, 10652590, 10653147, 10653783, 10654533, 10655226, 10658900, 10659679, 10660320, 10662588, 10662645, 10662662, 10663473, 10667056, 10667437, 10668081, 10668094, 10668131, 10668612, 10668969, 10668970, 10669584, 10669678, 10669729, 10669775, 10669866, 10669895, 10669992, 10670422, 10670506, 10676348, 10676732, 10677120, 10679795, 10679934, 10680057, 10680290, 10680342, 10680714, 10681512, 10682584, 10682906, 10683022, 10683114, 10683549, 10683620, 10683697, 10683743, 10689898, 10690761, 10691284, 10691556, 10691751, 10693061, 10694300
The subject vehicle (SV) population includes MY 2005-2006 vehicles built between March 2004 and December 2005 manufactured with a TRW supplied headlight switch assembly (HSA).The HSA was the primary focus of the investigation; earlier and later vehicles utilized different HSAs.Consumers complain that the headlights in the subject vehicles do not illuminate when the HSA is turned on, or that the headlights extinguish while on (subject failure). No other driving lights are affected. The front marker, tail, and instrument lamps operate. Also, the high beams can be illuminated by holding the turn signal stalk in the up position. As reported by consumers, turning the HSA off and on typically corrects the failure.Initially the failures occur infrequently but they become progressively more frequent with age.Chrysler has indicated its intention to offer of an extended lifetime warranty on the HSA, so that consumers with this problem can have their HSA replaced at no charge when they begin experiencing the subject failure.Commencing sometime in early 2013, Chrysler will send letters to SV owners notifying them of the lifetime warranty. The SV headlight system design is essentially the same as that described in EA 05-009, which involved headlight anomalies in earlier model Chrysler minivans; refer to it to for additional information. The subject failure is caused by friction between the plastic cam and metal surfaces of the electrical contacts in the HSA, which results in the production of plastic particles (debris).Analysis shows that debris can collect on the electrical contact that controls the headlights, resulting in an open circuit and preventing the headlights from turning on.Subsequent operation of the HSA may temporarily displace the debris, at which time the headlights operate correctly.Lubricant was applied to the plastic cam beginning in December 2005, reducing debris production.Consequently, subsequent failure levels were lower. The report counts shown above include only those that involve the subject failure.Reports involving other failure modes which were identified have not been included either because they were not safety related, or if they were safety related, because there was no defect trend. The single crash event listed in the Failure Report Summary Table above involved a deer strike allegedly due to loss of headlights in February 2006.No injuries were reported in this crash. An April 2004 non-crash incident (?Other? above) involved a momentary loss of headlights. The consumer drove into a ditch, and one minor injury was alleged. The subject vehicles experienced a 2.2% warranty claim rate. While standing alone this would appear to be significant, a portion of these warranty claims likely involve other problems with the HSA unrelated to the subject failure. In view of the on road experience of drivers in rapidly restoring headlight illumination by turning the headlight switch off and on again, the rate and particularly the recent trend in problems with the switch, and Chrysler?s extended lifetime warranty coupled with the owner notification of that extended warranty, further investigation does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist, and the agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.Details on Chrysler?s lifetime HSA warranty extension for the SV population will be available in the public file for this investigation.
