BMW IS recalling certain model year 2002-2005 325I, 325xi, 330I, and 330xi vehicles manufactured from september 1, 2001, through march 1, 2005. over time, resistance in the electrical contacts may cause one or more rear lamp functions (tail light, brake light, and/or turn-signal), within the vehicle's body panel, to stop working.
Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions. this could cause a vehicle crash without warning.

On certain passenger vehicles, a problem in the manufacturing process of the rear brake rotors may have resulted in the creation of a crack where the brake disc and the parking brake drum meet. further cracking of the rotor could occur due to braking torque when the vehicle IS driven and the brakes are applied. the brake drum, connected to the wheel hub…
If this happened, the wheel would continue to turn, but the disc would stop, and there would be no braking capacity at that wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace both rear brake rotors. owner notification began march 25, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.

Ignition selaniod isn't working. When I turn the key to start the car, the ignition thinks the car has started, but the engine doesn't turn over. It takes multiple tries to get the car to start.
While driving our car the dash lights will come on and the car will loose all power. We have to pull over and turn car off wait a minute with key completely out of the ignition and restart the car then all lights are off and car IS completely drivable. This happens multiple times a day no matter what speed IS being driven. Also within the same month the locks will not unlock when car IS stopped and shut off or by the power button inside the car. As well as our 4 way indicator which IS on same switch as the power lock button no longer works.
Car was parked in private driveway, 200 feet from street, and had not been driven or started for 4 days. awoke to car completely engulfed in flames. fire truck needed to put out fire, and to protect nearby house. fire inspector could not determine cause of fire, due to extend of damage, though no evidence of vandalism. no comprehensive insurance, so car a complete write off. salvage yard said they had never seen a car so completely destroyed by fire. BMW contacted, and completely uninterested and unhelpful. heard about nhtsa complaint reporting in article about unexplained BMW fires.
The camshaft positioning sensor a circuit intermittent can go bad leading the engine to stop working all together this could cause a very serious accident if driving on the road
Locks occupants in car and cannot electrically or mechanically unlock. many BMW operators have reported this problem on internet but no recall exists for dealerships to repair/replace. happens when vehicle IS in motion or stationary, on a city street or highway, turning or anytime the system locks the doors trapping occupants

Battery and alternator checked good with various service providers yet vehicle had a persistent battery drain witch would only appear after car was on the road and driving. after car stopped running due to low battery it then would not restart. no warning lights would come on until just a minute or two prior to engine quitting. took vehicle to monrovia BMW in monrovia ca and was told that alternator was faulty. installed new (not rebuilt) specified alternator and new battery and 5 months later same problem came back. further own personal investigation found that BMW IS aware of a faulty electrical system design flaw and I was never told about from BMW tech's at time of inspection as to the possibility of a system problem when the climate control "blower motor resistor" of "final stage unit" (fsu) and its internal resistor fails. this part has hundreds of write ups online from other owners and has gone back many years. when the part fails it leads to a whole variety of electrical problems with the affected vehicle. this could lead to a full engine shut down and lead to a crash. my vehicle has also been experiencing loss of engine coils and these are also part of the electrical system that could be being impacted by this fsu / resistor problem. fire and or other electrical problems are also possible. *tr

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
In a letter submitted to the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) dated August25, 2011, BMWindicated that it will conduct a voluntary recall campaign to remedy the subject vehicles. The issue involves the rear lamps in the vehicles body panel.Through normal vehicle use over time, the rear lamps ground wiring and associated 8-pin connector can experience an increase of the resistance at the electrical contact points. This can lead to intermittent or permanent loss of the rear lamp functions which include tail, brake, and turn signal operation. The recall consists of modifying the rear lamps in the vehicles body panel by adding a secondary ground connection in parallel to the existing primary ground connection. An 8-pin connector that attaches the primary ground wiring to the rear lamp assembly will also be inspected and replaced if necessary.BMW will complete dealer notification in September 2011 and will begin owner notification in October 2011.All 3 series sedans (except for the M3 sedan which utilized a different rear lamp assembly) that were built between September 1, 2001 and March 1, 2005 are included in this recall, totalling approximately 241,000 vehicles. The action taken by BMW is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.
Odi has received complaints from consumers stating that their tail light assembly IS not properly illuminating.the tail light assembly consists of a turn signal lamp, a tail lamp and a brake lamp.the complainants have indicated that the issue IS with an 8 pin connector and associated ground wiring.these components are allegedly overheating and melting due to excessive electrical current that runs through the system.bmw issued a technical service bulletin (tsb) sib-630306 on february 2007 to address the condition by adding supplementary ground wiring to the tail lamp assembly.odi IS upgrading to an ea to further investigate the issue.
In march 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) received a petition from mr. Mark peters requesting an investigation of rear lamp failure in model year 2002-2005 BMW 3-series vehicles.an information request letter was sent to BMW in april 2009, and odi received bmw's response in june 2009.the tail lamp assembly contains lighting for the brake lamps, tail lamps, and turn signals.a technical service bulletin (tsb) was issued by BMW in january of 2007 instructing service technicians to examine an 8 pin electrical connector for heat-related damage and to incorporate additional ground wiring to the connector.complainants have alleged that significant thermal damage to the connector and associated ground wiring has occurred.this condition can result in intermittent or total loss of all lighting (brake, tail, and turn signal) for the effected rear lamp assembly.odi will open a preliminary evaluation to further examine this issue including further evaluating BMW complaints and related warranty data.
