If the fuel pump fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Owners were mailed interim notices on May 28, 2015. The recall began on July 6, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
The contact owns a 2014 BMW 435I. The contact stated that while the vehicle was turned off, the battery discharged abnormally. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the water pump had remained running unexpectedly when the vehicle was turned off. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign: 24V608000 (Engine and Engine Cooling, Electrical System); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
The contact owns a 2014 BMW 435I. The contact stated that while driving uphill at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer. The dealer determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced and the computer needed to be reprogrammed. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle had previously been repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V189000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to report the failure to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 96,911.
Sos drive malfunction. Tsb released, see nhtsa complaint/ manufacturer communication dated 01jan202, nhtsa ID number: 10171504 manufacturer communication number: b840416 dealer refuses to replace due to out of warranty and will not accept 3RD party warranty. BMW USA, will not assist even though the problem IS a known issue and defect.
Accelerated car after stop sign. Heard a loud pop and loss of power. Looked under hood and found the charge pipe plastic busted and off the throttle body.
While driving at moderate acceleration I heard a pop and felt a large decrease in power. Looked under hood and saw an obvious pipe broken off. Took it to beverly hills bmw.advised it was the 'left charge pipe' and to find out its the very few things not covered in ca emissions 7 year/70k warranty. Seams fairly common. Estimate $1,313.14!
My vehicle has 64,000 miles and I was exiting the driveway and accelerating up to 45mph when all the sudden I encountered a complete loss of power with sounded like a bang in the engine. My car immediately slowed down to under 30mph and started shaking. Luckily I was only 2 minutes from my house. I believe this part should be recalled because looking at all the complaints with other owners they have the same problem this IS a plastic piece that under where in tear and pressure which IS designed for it IS failing. Some of the stories I've heard are pretty scary also like people being on the highway in this happening.
My 2014 BMW 435xi stalls on while driving without warning. the same issue was reported on nhtsa campaign number: 15v189000 for my vehicle model and year. when I input my vin for the recall, the fuel pump issue isn't shown. for this reason, bwm will not pay to replace the fuel pump. my girlfriend had the same issue on her 2013 BMW 328I and BMW replaced her fuel pump and the problem was resolved. I believe the clean point established by BMW for this fuel pump issue wasn't correct or bad parts were still in vehicles outside of the clean point. my car has stalled on the highway while driving at least four times. it's not safe because the traffic around me has to avoid my car until I reach the side of the road to stop. I usually just turn the car off and wait a couple of minutes, restart and the car drives normal. I think it has something to due with the fuel level. the car only stalls when the fuel level IS at or below 1/4 tank. currently, I keep my car above half a tank to avoid the stalling issue. my fear IS the issue will happen regardless of the fuel level. I'm sending this letter because last week I was running late and didn't get a chance to fill up the tank and my car stalled at 1/4 tank on the highway and I was almost in a accident. please help!!!
TL* the contact owns a 2014 BMW 435I. The contact stated that there was a strong odor of fuel. the contact also stated that while driving about 65 mph, the drive chain malfunction light illuminated and the vehicle shook and shut off. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was towed to the orange coast infiniti dealer located at 15550 beach blvd, westminster, ca 92683) where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
Takata recall I had a headon accident, airbags didn't inflate. car stopped with me with no warning, fuel pomp was defective. I had to replace it. all brakes system went bad with no warning. Had to replace everything left front wheel and run on flat tire blew up with no warning while. Had to be replaced. sensors go off during winter months warning low-tires when tires are fine. sensors go off to wear seatbelt when none IS the passenger side or objects. tail light wiring harness burned off resulted in no left tail light. I called BMW, they told me to take the car but they can't promise that they will help. transmission has been slipping while driving. bluetooth hardly work, it keeps disconnecting or not connecting.
My car had a strong odor of gas after sitting in my garage on days where the gas tank IS full. I took it to the dealer and was told the gas tank has a leak. The issue from the dealer IS: "fuel pressure sending unit which IS not available separately from the fuel tank unfortunately." this IS a car that was not yet 5 years old and has 33,400 miles. The car has not been in any accidents. It does not seem correct that a non-replaceable part fails on such a lightly used car. It also seems like a safety and emissions issue the manufacturer should fix. I have reported it the BMW north america but they do not accept it to be a design or manufacturing flaw and seem to feel the safety issue IS my issue to deal with. I am reporting this in case it IS a common problem on 2014 BMW 435I convertible gas tanks.
TL* the contact owns a 2014 BMW 435I. While driving various speeds, the drivetrain malfunction warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle decelerated and lost power. The vehicle was taken to nalley BMW of decatur (1606 church st, decatur, ga 30033) where it was diagnosed that the intercooler charge pipe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
Separation of turbo charge pipe causing loss of engine power while in motion. vehicle mileage at the time was 21,340.
2014 435I, charge pipe broke leaving me with no power. Cars behind me had to brake to avoid hitting me as I tried to accelerate onto an onramp
Charge air pipe for turbo exploded at 30K miles, complete shutdown on hwy into protect mode lost all power.
With only 14,500 miles the brake rotors are scored and stop distance has increased substantially. brakes also very noisy. Dealer has told me because of high carbon steel in the rotors, they rust easily and are prone to scoring if not driven every day.
TL* the contact owns a 2014 BMW 435I. While driving 35 mph on a two lane road during inclement weather, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was on a winding road and was able to coast over to the side of the road, which was extremely difficult. A warning light flashed for a drive train malfunction. The vehicle was unable to be driven and was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump assembly needed to be replaced. The contact was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v189000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 22,000. updated 09/28/16*lj *cn
I was driving in a city residential area, going about 35 mph when the car stopped after sputtering a couple of times. no warning at all but there was a message on the dash, "drive train malfunction". I coasted to the side of the road, a grassy area just barely off the paved road. it was located on a curve. at the time, there was a thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rain. We were extremely lucky that that the car was not hit by traffic coming up behind me. BMW mechanics replaced the fuel pump.
Even though the recalls were issued in may 2015 I have not received any recall notice for this car.on the other hand I have had no problems. re
10/15/2015 car serviced for recall - fuel pump issue 10/23/2015 - while driving on highway at approximately 70mph car engine suddenly stopped. I pushed down my clutch (manual transmission) and was able to roll onto the left shoulder. Had to be towed to nearest BMW dealer. Car "repaired" and I picked it up one week later. 11/4/2015 while driving on highway at about 55 mph car engine again suddenly stopped and I coasted onto right shoulder. I was able to restart car about 15 minutes later. Brought car to my local dealer for repair. Dealer advised problem was discovered with fuel system and repaired. 12/16/2015 while driving in very heavy traffic car overheated and I had to pull off highway. Message on my screen advised to call roadside assistance. I ignorded that and waited for engine to cool and traffic to flow. I then restarted car and made it back home. Car went in for repair next day. Dealer advised problem was solved.
On two occasions, january 2015 and may 2015 my 435I stopped while I was driving without any warning whatsoever. the first time I was crossing a very busy 3 lane northbound road to get to the left turn lane when without any warning the car just stopped. they was no engine light on dash. I was lucky that I was not hit as I didn't even have the opportunity to brake, to indicate to drivers behind me that I was slowing down. the lights, chassis stabilization and drivetrain malfunction came on the dash. two pretty serious problems without any prior warning, a police officer got the car started and I was able to drive about another mile before again it just stopped. Warnings about the fuel injection and engine overheat came on in addition to drivetrain and chassis stabilization. the car was towed to the local BMW dealer whosaid they needed to reprogram the computer. After this I drove the car for another 3 months and 2,000 miles when it happen again. I boarded a car ferry after driving 100 miles on a major highway. when I stated the car todisembark, it shut down and all 4 warnings all came up at once. I got it started and got off the ferry when it shut down again. all I could think of was how lucky I was it didn't happen while was during at 65mph on the highway. again towed to BMW who told me again the computer needed to be reprogrammed and a fan changed. I don't believe them. There are recalls on cars with the same problems for faulty plating on the fuel pump. I do not feel safe driving this car. I am afraid of it stopping not only on a major highway but any roadway and being hit from behind as there IS no braking to indicate to drivers behind you that you are stopping. once it shuts down you can't start it. so you are stuck wherever you are. a very dangerous situation.
TL* the contact owns a 2014 BMW 435I. While driving 15 mph over a puddle of water, the water seeped into the engine and caused it to stall. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. The vehicle did not restart, but was not towed because the vehicle could not be shifted out of park. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was 15,000.
There IS a major design flaw on the BMW 435I 2014 to people who live where there IS rain. I was pulling into the parking lot of my company and there was a puddle from the ran maybe 5-6" (not enough to penetrate the doors and wet the inside) . I drove through the puddle and the engine hydrolocked causing the engine to have to be replaced. I was told by the service department that the car IS low to the ground and that the air intake IS on the front grill at the bottom. With this car being low, how can anyone drive in rain in an area where water accumulates? I was never warned or informed of this situation. I have worked at my company for 16 years and have had over 6 cars and have never had to worry about any puddle at the driveway of my business. This IS absolutely ridiculous. *tr
On 7/9/14, I backed our new 435I up to our garage (outside for the night). the garage door was open, and the warning system let me know that I was close to our lawnmower. once I was close enough, I put the car in drive to straighten out the car, and immediately the vehicle attempted to accelerate to full speed. I was already on the foot break, but the car would not respond. our driveway IS concrete and quite slick. the rear tire spun uncontrollably, created a cloud of smoke, and left a pile of tire debris behind the vehicle. I hit the kill switch and refused to drive the car further. it IS now 8/9/14 and we still don't have a resolution. we wrote a large check as a down payment for the car and are making payments on a vehicle we do not possess. I was told the vehicle would be inspected by an engineer, and that the report would take two days to complete. after that, the engineering team has 10 days to review the results. subsequently, BMW (corporate in nj) has asked for an additional two weeks for evaluation. I asked for any results, but was told no information was available. *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.
