The contact owns a 2007 BMW F 800 S. The contact stated that while inspecting the motorcycle in the driveway, the contact became aware that fuel was leaking from the fuel pump. The motorcycle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 59,000.
- Fuel/propulsion system
Fuel leaking from around fuel pump assembly resulted in electronic fuel pump module being soaked in fuel which caused catastrophic failure of the fuel pump assy and potential fire hazard. This appears to be similar to a recall affecting 2005 - 2012 BMW bikes. Nhtsa campaign number: 13v617000. *tr

On march 11, 2017 my motorcycle stalled while I was riding in traffic and never wanted to start again. I pulled over and had to get the bike towed on a truck back home. It became apparent that the electronic fuel control unit had malfunctioned due to the pooling of fuel around it. The fuel pump flange developed some cracks and thus allowed the fuel to leak thru. Cracks can be seen in the attached photos 1, 2, 3, and 4. The leaking fuel pooled on top of the fuel pump flange and eroded the epoxy or plastic filling inside the electronic fuel pump control unit thus caused the unit to fail. The failing electronic unit can cause a spark and start a fire right at the fuel tank which IS right below the seat where the rider IS sitting. This IS an immediate fire hazard. Many BMW motorcycles around the same year was recalled for exactly the same problem (nhtsa campaign number: 13v617000). This recall should be extended to BMW f 800 s models as well. The flange and the fuel pump IS manufactured by an italian company called bitron (http://www.bitron.net/index.php?option=com_k2&view=itemlist&task=tag&tag=pump&itemid=142). BMW does not sell the flange itself but the whole fuel pump assembly for $414.77 which IS a costly repair with the labor and tax. Another problem occurred soon after the fuel pump was removed from fuel tank. The beige colored plastic that IS covering the fuel pump developed cracks just as it was sitting on the shelf. This cane be seen in attached photo 5.

TL* the contact owns a 2007 BMW f800s motorcycle. The contact stated that he received notification of nhtsa campaign ID number: 13v549000 (wheels). The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs per the recall. The vehicle was inspected and the contact was advised that the recall repair was not warranted because there was no sign of wear on the bearing or the axle. The contact believed that the recall remedy was not sufficient to determine if the bearing or axle was worn and wanted the dealer to replace the bearing and axle as a precautionary measure. The manufacturer was contacted and refused to replace either component under the recall. The contact had not experienced a failure. Updated 09-03-14 *bf the consumer stated the recall IS an inspection to determine if a failure has occurred not if a failure will occur. The consumer IS concerned that the vehicle will become uncontrollable during an extended riding event. This failure has occurred on another motorcycle the consumer owns almost causing a serious accident. The bearing and axle assembly was replaced under recall. updated 11/18/2014 *js

After refueling to a full tank, fuel visible at top of filler neck, the motorcycle was driven home 1 mile and parked in garage. Went to start the bike the next day and the bike would not start. There was a very strong fuel odor in the garage. I took the seat off and inspected the fuel vent hoses and charcoal canister. There was a visible puddle of fuel on top of the fuel pump, covering all the electrical connections, and on the floor. This IS an obvious fire risk so I took it to the dealer. They replaced the fuel pump electronics due to fuel filling the fuel tank pump electronics compartment. I made sure not to fill/overfill the tank with fuel and the bike operated normally for a few months. Then the same scenario occurred on or about 01 jan 2014. This time the dealer found the real problem, the fuel pump flange was cracked and leaking. This seems to be the same problem affecting many other BMW motorcycles that have a recall in place -nhtsa campaign number: 13v617000. I am requesting the scope of the recall be expanded to include 2007 BMW f800s motorcycles also. *tr

The motor on my 2007 BMW f800s started knocking in the spring of 2011. This IS approx 6 months after the warranty expired. I brought the bike in to the dealer. They told me it was fine. This process was repeated two more times. Finally the engine was removed and diagnosed. The dealer found complete piston failure (piston slap). The piston skirt was grinding into the cylinder wall. Both the pistons and barrels need to be replaced. The cost of the repair IS more than the value of the bike. based on visual evidence of the damage I have found at least one engineer that stated it clearly started happening while the vehicle was under warranty. The vehicle only has 16000 miles on it. This IS a total engine failure. I have found dozens of others that own the same vehicle and model year that have had the same failure. I feel BMW IS trying to avoid doing the correct thing by not recalling the engine parts. BMW told me the bike IS out of warranty and I am responsible for the repairs. *tr

Upon decelerating and engaging the clutch as if to stop, the engine will suddenly and completely die. several minutes and many starting attempts are generally required to restart the engine before it will run again. no obvious series of events forecasts this failure. bump-starting the engine before coming to a complete stop has, on one occasion, refired the engine and it continued running. on at least one occasion this engine failure occurred while downshifting entering a highway onramp, at which point the engine died, resulting in a potentially very dangerous situation. this loss of power has happened many times and the dealer has investigated the situation and dealt with the issue under warranty twice without identifying or fixing the problem. *Tr

I am writing you to please urge investigation of all BMW f800s and f800st motorcycles. I have been researching a problem with these motorcycles since I purchased my 2007 f800s for the first time in june of 2009. Soon after I purchased the motorcycle, my rear wheel bearing failed causing a severe wobble. The dealer replaced the bearing and eccentric axle which they say was "improved" with a harder steel in the axle. Fast forward just over a year later (12/2/10) my rear wheel bearing failed again. I took it back to the same exact dealer and they have not made any other improvements to the design since my last time there. There are countless of documents that show these are failing for riders all around the u.s. With these motorcycles and BMW clearly states that it IS not a design flaw on their part and has been refusing any financial responsibility for the problem to its owners. Please help. *tr

BMW motorcycle: engine stalling, dying, at idle or during slow gear change, downshift, after engine IS fully warmed up, ongoing problem even after dealer tried to fix. several similar reports on BMW riders forum. causes unsafe operation if stalling on turn, or at intersection. Have been able to avoid crash and get off highway so far. Continues to stall intermittently. No apparent rhyme or reason, but always after bike has been running for several minutes, fully warmed up. will always re-start but will die again of not held above idle. Very tricky after stop at intersection or on a turn. Dealer has tried replacing breather hoses and updating programming. Did not replace fuel pump, which some people on web have recommended. Problem has persisted, happens every time motorcycle IS operated 20+ minutes. *Tr

Service bulletins
Technical service bulletins and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about this vehicle. Ask a dealer for the full document by its number.
- 10249027The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle discharged battery complaints.
- 10205099The use of a faulty tool in engine assembly has led to isolated cases of damage to the spark plugs.
- 10204667One of the following situations can occur when connecting to BN2000 motorcycles: 1. The installed control units cannot be found when reading out with ISTA. 2. Control units initially communicate after connecting to the vehicle, but communication later stops.
- 10201169Vehicle battery not charged despite the battery charger being connected to the on-board socket (manufactured before 2009)Headlights and rear lights light up intermittently despite the ignition being switched off and the battery charger being connected to the on-board socket.
- 10200257The clutch plates do not tolerate frequent and prolonged operation at the clutch friction zone, causing a shorter service life in motorcycles that see intensive use
- 10182619Discharged Battery Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed: The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle "discharged battery" complaints. In order to properly repair the vehicle the first time in the workshop, it is very important that the diagnostic test plans are performed to completion, with all results taken into consideration. Without performing the energy diagnosis test plan, the root cause of the discharged battery cannot be identified. This increases the chances of a repeat repair.
- 10151350Coolant pump drain hose. Details The coolant pump is fitted with a radial shaft seal on the oil-side and on the coolant-side is a mechanical seal. Mechanical seals are reliable an durable, yet for technical reasons, they always exhibit minor seepage. The seepage amount is considered to be within permissible limits if the coolant does not need to be topped up between service intervals. The drain hole (arrow in the figure) of the coolant pump is in plain view. Even small, inevitable seepage is noticed and often perceived to be a faulty coolant pump. In many such cases, fault-free coolant pumps are replaced. In order to reduce misdiagnosis and repeat repairs, a drain hose is retrofitted. The hose diverts the seepage away from the field of view to under the engine. Yet large amounts of leakage that indicate a faulty coolant pump will be noticed.
- 10147915Occasionally it's not possible to downshift the transmission; especially from 3rd to 2nd gear.
- 10147912Map data should be stored on a 64 GB SD card. In GARMIN Express the note appears that a maximum of 32 GB is possible.

- 10038217BMW: crankcase pressure diagnosis and information for all vehicles. Updated on 4/24/2013.
- 10037025BMW: procedure for determining and replacing incandescent and halogen light bulbs under warranty.
- 10033130BMW vehicles: fuel level sensor repairs. Where it IS necessary to replace the right or the left side fuel level sensor due to a failure, the entire pump and housing or delivery unit (suction jet assembly) do not need to be replaced as well. In some cases, epc does not show that the repair kit IS available separately in the illustration, but it IS available in the parts description. All models. No model years listed.
- 10030825BMW motorcycle: engine fuels containing ethanol. BMW motorrad has no objection to the use of si engine fuels containing up to a maximum of 10% ethanol and imposes no warranty restrictions. Ethanol mixtures in proportions higher than 10% can have an adverse effect on performance and can result in damage to components that come into contract with fuel. No warranty claims whatsoever for damage caused in this way will be accepted. No model years listed.
- 10029706BMW motorcycle: wheel speed dependent, clearly audible clanking noise occurs when braking to adjust speed. E series (K25; k25/02; k25/03; k25/11; k25/12; k25/hp; K26; K27; K28; K29; k29/hp; K40; K41; K43; k43/hv; K44; k589/03; K71). No model years listed.
