Brake fluid that foams could lead to a reduced braking capability of the front brake system, possibly resulting in a crash.
The front brake fluid reservoir will be retrofitted with a screen insert, free of charge. The recall began on December 19, 2012. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.
BMW IS recalling 428 my 2007 F800 s, F800 st, r1200 r, k1200 s, k1200 r, k1200 r sport, and k1200 GT motorcycles. it IS possible for the coating to separate from the inside face of the steering damper housing. if this happened, the coating could partially clog the oil bores within the damper.
If this occurred, the steering damper could become stiff increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the steering damper free of charge. the recall began during september 2008. owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.
On certain motorcycles, during long periods of riding at sustained high engine rpm, vibration within the brake fluid reservoir can cause the brake fluid to foam. this could allow air to enter the front brake system which could lead to a loss of front braking efficiency.
Air in the brake system can lead to a loss of braking capability, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will bleed the front brakes and install a damper weight in the brake fluid reservoir. this weight will dampen possible vibrations that can cause foaming of the brake fluid. the recall began on december 14, 2007. owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.
On certain motorcycles, frequent short trips particularly during cold temperatures, can cause water to accumulate in the oil tank, and when the engine IS running, escaping water vapor can condense on the oil tank air bleed valve. in freezing temperatures, this water could freeze and block the air bleed valve.
It IS possible that a pressure build up in the oil tank could cause it to rupture, allowing oil to leak onto the rear tire. an oil leak could cause a fire. oil on the rear tire could cause loss of control.
Dealers will install a new oil tank cap containing a valve to prevent overpressure in the tank free of charge. the recall began on april 10, 2007. owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.

Upon inspection, the contact noticed that there was gasoline leaking from the fuel pump. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump assembly was leaking and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v617000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 10,122 and the current mileage was 13,000.
My fuel gauge IS once again reading completely empty even though I've only gone 40 miles on the current tank which has a range of about 240 miles. I just had the 5TH fuel strip sensor in my tank replaced by my local dealer. BMW IS well aware of the problem yet does nothing, except say they are sorry. *jb
Fuel was hemorrhaging all over the left side of the motorcycle when I parked it after a short ride. I noticed a trail of fuel where I went down the street. I had just topped off and was down to half a tank (approx. 2.5 gallons) in about ten miles. Smoke was pouring off of the engine and the smell of fuel was overwhelming. A major fire/explosion was a real possibility. After cooling the motorcycle with a garden hose and rinsing the fuel away, I removed the fairings and fuel tank. Fuel was leaking from the fuel pump/quick disconnect area. *tr

Regarding BMW k1200r sport motorcycle. Defect present from new purchase of vehicle. obvious "jutter" in clutch lever. mechanical noise coming from transmission observed when jutter IS noticed in lever. obvious unsafe lag felt in drivetrain. defect brought to the attention of dealership several times prior to and at 6000 mile service. dealer verified jutter in system. dealer stated other similar models had complaint of such nature but were corrected by updating clutch parts. I was told my vehicle had the updated parts factory installed from new and they had no answer as to why jutter was occurring. dealer was told to tighten cam chain by manufacturer for solution. this did not correct problem. Failure still occurs frequently. concern: the vehicle could become unstable during shifting and cause crash. clutch system failure also possible. safety issue not appropriately answered by manufacturer. *Tr

ODI began investigating this issue after owners of model year (MY) 2004-2011 R-series BMW motorcycles reported incidents of pressurized fuel leakage from the fuel pump flange. Some owners first became aware of the problem when their pant leg was fuel-soaked.Prior to opening our initial investigation on November 16, 2012, BMW had concluded that the small number of warranty claims and owner reports did not indicate the existence of a safety defect trend. However, during the course of responding to our information requests, BMW re-examined its data and decided to conduct a recall (13V-617) of the subject motorcycles. In conducting recall 13V-617, BMW voluntarily expanded the scope of affected vehicles from ODI'soriginal scope, MY2005-2008 R-series motorcycles, to include the primary and auxiliary fuel pumps on all MY 2005-2011 R-series, MY 2005-2011 K12&13 models, MY 2010-2011 RR models, and the MY 2012 K1600 motorcycles. The total number of motorcycles subject to this recalled is 50,184.The 55 reports cited in this investigation can be viewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following complaint identification numbers:10485789,10449393,10521322,10475150,10435325,10493015,10471642, 10448216,10488899,10356156,10433733,10442023,10492342,10435968, 10492961,10504324,10485882,10433013,10453738,10474390,10417320, 10485276,10444876,10508150,10485807,10492118,10491835,10425962, 10430734,10488652,10485274,10493320,10522421,10399423,10443840, 10448325,10490417,10485452,10433589,10467136,10420291,10503806, 10532145,10523763,10523626,10425514,10354202,10437222,10444742, 10454834,10532172,10487624,10435984,10452476, 10485337
