I purchased this 2009 BMW K1300GT used from a dealer 3 weeks ago. He only let me do a short test drive around the block and it ran fine. I purchased it and began riding it daily to and from work, 48 miles round trip. There are 6 lights and 4 Stop sighs on my route. If I do a slow roll through a stop it comes close to stalling. If there are several cars ahead of me at a stop sign, or I hit a red light and have to wait awhile or sit through three lights at traffic hour, it stalls while I'm waiting. This has happened many times. Yesterday during traffic hour I was at a red light that cycled three times until I got through it. The bike stalled five times there. One time it stalled at a red light. Just before it turned green it stalled again, turning my rear lights off. There was a full size truck rolling up behind me very fast. Since it stalled out and the lights were off, it appeared to him that I was moving. At the last second he slammed on his brakes, I started the bike and quickly rode onto the shoulder and he drove by me still skidding. I would have been killed! The dealer never said a word about this well known and highly documented issue with this year, make and model of this BMW motorcycle.
Engine stalls and / or loses power in hot weather. I have had numerous stalling episodes with this bike. It will stall after being in steady cruise for 30 minutes at 4000 rpm. It also stalls repeatedly in very hot weather (95-100 degrees) and will not restart(sitting stationary at a traffic light when trying to start off after light changes). If it does restart in these conditions, it doesn't respond to throttle opening and will only rev to 2000-3000 rpm and will bog down if throttle IS opened further. I have had instances where the engine won't stay running after start( engine starts and runs for approximately 10-15 seconds and then dies).
Stalls when clutch IS engaged and engine should come to idle. the typical situation IS when preparing to stop for an intersection or other road condition that would call for the engine to be temporarily disengaged from the transmission. this happens on every ride. the dealer service department opined "they all do that".
TL* the contact owns a 2009 BMW k 1300 GT motorcycle. While driving approximately 40 mph, the contact attempted to shift from the second to third gear, but the gear shift fractured. The contact pulled over and subsequently towed the motorcycle to a local dealer. The technician stated that the failure was unusual and was unable to diagnosed the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 27,700.
Engine stops intermittently while driving stop and go in city traffic under 10 to 15 miles per hour. the problem started in 2010. BMW has not been able to correct the problem after 4 attempts. the engine still stops. I keep complaining to BMW. told to get lost.
TL* the contact owns a 2009 BMW K1 300 GT. While driving 15 mph, the vehicle stalled. The motorcycle was repaired three times per nhtsa campaign number: 09v471000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
The engine stops while driving. the problem has been reported to BMW dealers 5 times in the past 5 years. I barely drove the bike in 2014. 1/23/2010 6.510 km reported to BMW of oklahoma work done programming control unit of engine management system. repair done under warranty. 7/29/2011 33.234 km reported to BMW asheville same repair as first time. 6/22/2013 65.734 km reported to BMW asheville same repair again 7/8/2015 38493 miles reported to BMW montreal. recommended replace both stepper (idle) motor and airbox at a cost of over $1,000 7/9/2015 39000 miles reported to BMW mechanicsburg, pa. same recommendation as BMW of montreal. I was told that the dealer has seen this problem on similar bikes and that their recommendation was the solution. in addition, they stated that the prior model to mine the k1200 had the same problem and that BMW had issued a mechanical alert at the time but no alert had been issued for my bike. I called BMW USA to complain. I was dismissed with a response that the bike had passed the warranty period - not acceptable. the bike has had the same problem from day one. BMW IS ignoring the problem with a serious safety concern. the bike has a serious problem: a motorcycle engine should not stop while it IS being driven. when driving under 15 mph in city traffic, the engine had a tendency to stop. The engine stalling happened intermittently and the engine would start right up afterwards. updated 08/10/16.*jb *js *tr
Downshifting the motorcycle stalls frequently upon slowing and pulling in the clutch. Usually this occurs at deceleration in second or first gear. One can see the rpm dip below the normal idle speed and then the bike stalls. This IS quite dangerous as it occurs in normal riding conditions and occurs multiple times in one ride. Recently it occurred in heavy traffic and only my quick action avoided an accident. I tried everything the dealer recommended, fuel additives etc.. Nothing works - almost too dangerous to ride. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2009 bwm k1300 GT motorcycle. The contacted stated that while driving at an unknown speed, he approached an intersection and engaged the clutch. The vehicle then stalled without warning. The contact attempted numerous times to restart the vehicle but to no avail. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the ignition coil was replaced at the contact's expense. A short period of time after the repair, the vehicle failed to start again. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the right combination switch and starter relay was replaced at the contact's expense. The left combination switch was also replaced because the horn and high beam headlights were not operational. The stalling failure recurred and the vehicle continued to fail to start. The dealer then recommended that the contact replace the entire vehicle but the contact declined and requested the dealer to repair the failure. The dealer then stated that the rear final drive needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
Engine cut out un-expectedly multiple times (5) during a 200 mile trip. First time this has happened in 18K miles, but very scary, of course it happens at the most inopportune time, in traffic. At idle, it quits, or, worse, cuts off when downshifting. Multiple posts to the moa confirm that this issue IS common if not predictable sooner or later. Very concerned for safety of myself and my passenger(s)btw, moa IS the official BMW motorcycle owners association of which I am a member. Thanks *tr
For a few weeks prior to the incident, I could smell fuel when I parked the bike. There were no visible leaks. I planned to take it to the dealership to be looked at, whenever the next opportunity presented itself. On tuesday april 29, 2014, I rode 17 miles to work. The bike ran well and there was no evidence of trouble. It rained while I was working and 10 hours later when I came out of my work place the bike was wet. I toweled the seat dry and set off for home. The rear tire lost traction at low acceleration but I dismissed it to cold tires and wet pavement. The tires were new continental contamination m that had been installed about two weeks prior. On the first 1/8 of a mile to the first stop light I felt what I thought was water on my right leg. Because it has rained, I dismissed it as water from the faring of the bike. But as I turned onto the main street the road turned dry but my right leg and sneaker was getting soaked. I could smell gasoline and see that the liquid was oily. At about 1.8 miles from work I pulled over and saw that there was gasoline soaking the engine, my leg, the exhaust, and the ground. Vaporized fuel was steaming from the surface of the exhaust. I immediately shut the bike off and within a few minutes the gasoline evaporated and was gone. The leak stopped as soon as I turned the ignition off. I parked the bike and called for road side assistance. Luckily there was no fire. *tr updated 10/23/2014 *js
TL* the contact owns a 2009 BMW k1300gt motorcycle. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, he began to down shift but the engine stalled. The contact stated that he later received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 09v471000 (engine and engine cooling ). The vehicle was taken to the dealer but after the vehicle was repaired, the failure recurred seven times. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 4,000.
After having the recall , shown below , completed back in 2009 this safety problem reoccurred on this motorcycle , in my view all BMW did was replace the defective part with another defective part. all the same problems have reoccured with the three years of ownership ( driven less then 5K) almost causing a crash 4 times since the install of the "new" defective parts , both switch cluster have had failures from control loss to no starting and stalling. BMW has refused to replace the defective switches unless I pay for the replacement stating that have been replaced before under the recall. this IS a serious problem that can cause death when the switch fails causing the bike to stall or loss of control. the same defective switches are also now being replaced under warranty on the newer version of this motorcycle (k1600xx) , BMW still have not supplied working switch clusters that work. vehicle make / model: model year(s): BMW / k1300 GT 2009 BMW / k1300 s 2009 manufacturer: BMW of north america, llc mfr's report date: sep 29, 2009 nhtsa campaign ID number: 09v384000 n/a nhtsa action number: n/a component: electrical system:ignition:switch potential number of units affected: summary: BMW IS recalling certain model year 2009 motorcycles. 04/17/2012: 2009 BMW k1300gt (previous dealership demo bike, 42 month warranty) clutch basket shattered causing a massive damage to the engine and almost causing a multivehicle accident. Clutch/basket/cover were replaced by the dealership in md. Repairs in the amount of $2,897.55 were covered 100% by bmwna. Engine allegedly turned over smoothly, however motorcycle remained inoperable at the dealership. 05/22/2012: the initial repair did not fix all the damage caused by the initial clutch basket failure. Upon motorcycle reassembly, additional engine knock/noise was detected. The motorcycle remained inoperable at the dealership. 08/01/2012: multiple parts incl. Axles, shafts, bearings, gear wheels, sprockets, etc. Were replaced by the dealership. Total repair cost: $4,108.38. Bmwna only covered $1,750.83 and I was expected to pay the difference out of pocket. This repair job did not fix all the damage from the original breakdown either as more engine noise was detected. Motorcycle remained inoperable at the dealership. 12/07/2012: the dealership allegedly identified the source of the overlooked noise as the bent crankshaft / primary gear. Estimates in the amounts of $2,560.14 just for the crankshaft or $4,252.48 for the complete bottom end were issued directly to me. to date, the dealership, bmwna and I have been unable to resolve this matter through informal channels. *tr
2009 BMW k1300 GT. Consumer states incorrect miles per gallon reading *tgw the consumer stated the needle was reading 63-67 mpg, when in fact, it was only getting 42 mpg. The consumer stated he took the bike to the dealer four times and it was in the shop at one point for over six weeks. The dealer was unable to fix the problem. The consumer stated the bike now reads 70 mpg, when it IS only getting 42-43 mpg. *Jb
TL* the contact owns a 2009 BMW k1300 GT motorcycle. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the mileage counter for the fuel gauge did not display the amount of miles for the amount of fuel remaining. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced sensor on the fuel tank, and recalibrated the computer. The failure recurred. The dealer stated that the electronic control module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 658 and the current mileage was 13,000.
Bearings in rear wheel final drive failed making motorcycle very unstable. oil seal failure caused rear tire and brake disk to be coated with oil from the final drive. *tt
The engine stalls for no apparent reason. Typically during downshifts and at idle after exiting the highway. This has presented a dangerous situation on several occasions. *tt
TL* the contact owns a 2009 BMW k1300 GT. while driving approximately 40 mph the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and upon restart, it operated as normal. this was the second time this failure had occurred. the vehicle was not taken to be examined for the cause of failure and had not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 6,700.

2009 BMW k 1300 GT motorcycle stalls intermittently when clutch IS disengaged at slow speeds. Serious safety hazard. *Tr
I own a 2009 BMW k 1300 GT. I ride extensively and am experiencing stalling when decelerating or coming to a stop. the stalling seems to occur most frequently with the clutch in and the bike warm. it IS erratic and has occurred 30 times over the summer. now that it IS cooler the stalling IS less frequent. when this occurs my braking servo and lights go out. this has occurred at night at stop lights whereas the surprise stall causes fumbling to restart plus I am not as visible to other vehicles which IS a safety concern when it occurs. I have also experienced the stalling during my rush hour traffic commute on a 55 mph road with stop lights. I was again vulnerable because I presented a hazard by immobility to other drivers. when stalled several mind sequences occur that take your focus off the surrounding environment on the highway......"the engine shut down, what happened, no fuel? accidental kill switch bump? electrical failure. try to restart" I have taken the motorcycle to my dealer who stated that BMW was "aware" and most certainly working on it. there IS no official recognition by BMW of the problem. they did a computer check, did some fuel tweaks to no avail. *Tr
Motorcycle stalls often while downshifting to 1ST gear. I complained to my dealer as motorcycle IS under warranty. They could not find a fault. The service manager says that there are quite a few other persons with the same problem and that "BMW IS working on it". *Tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
ODI began investigating this issue after owners of model year (MY) 2004-2011 R-series BMW motorcycles reported incidents of pressurized fuel leakage from the fuel pump flange. Some owners first became aware of the problem when their pant leg was fuel-soaked.Prior to opening our initial investigation on November 16, 2012, BMW had concluded that the small number of warranty claims and owner reports did not indicate the existence of a safety defect trend. However, during the course of responding to our information requests, BMW re-examined its data and decided to conduct a recall (13V-617) of the subject motorcycles. In conducting recall 13V-617, BMW voluntarily expanded the scope of affected vehicles from ODI'soriginal scope, MY2005-2008 R-series motorcycles, to include the primary and auxiliary fuel pumps on all MY 2005-2011 R-series, MY 2005-2011 K12&13 models, MY 2010-2011 RR models, and the MY 2012 K1600 motorcycles. The total number of motorcycles subject to this recalled is 50,184.The 55 reports cited in this investigation can be viewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following complaint identification numbers:10485789,10449393,10521322,10475150,10435325,10493015,10471642, 10448216,10488899,10356156,10433733,10442023,10492342,10435968, 10492961,10504324,10485882,10433013,10453738,10474390,10417320, 10485276,10444876,10508150,10485807,10492118,10491835,10425962, 10430734,10488652,10485274,10493320,10522421,10399423,10443840, 10448325,10490417,10485452,10433589,10467136,10420291,10503806, 10532145,10523763,10523626,10425514,10354202,10437222,10444742, 10454834,10532172,10487624,10435984,10452476, 10485337
