Received from BMW, in march 2016, recall notice 16v-071, driver's front air bag module. As of this date, BMW still does not have the necessary parts available, and as of this date (12-21-2016) advised me not to expect them until early 2017 - almost a year later. My prior complaint to the nhtsa has been ignored. Somebody, somewhere, needs to be fired.
Nhtsa recall number 16v071 issued on 02/5/16 instruct that 2010 BMW X3 xdrive30i driver's front air bag IS defective and may produce execessive internal pressure that could cause the inflator to rapture resulting in serioous injury or death. I have been checking frequently with BMW and did not remedy the defect to date which I think more than a reasonable period of time to complete this defeect.
TL* takata recall. The contact owns a 2010 BMW X3 sav. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning in the middle of three lanes of traffic. The contact exited the vehicle while the passenger remained inside. Another vehicle driving at a high rate of speed crashed into the rear of the contact's vehicle, pushed the vehicle to the left, and caused it to crash into a curb. The air bags did not deploy. The driver was not injured. The front passenger sustained major injuries to the back, shoulder, and neck. Medical attention was required. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the body damage was repaired. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the vanos housing bolts were supposedly replaced. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v071000 (air bags). The contact received notification of a manufacturer recall for nhtsa campaign number: 14v176000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was notified, but had not called the contact back. The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.

Received recall notice dated march 2016 re "driver's front air bag module". BMW sarasota, fl dealer states that no parts are available to remedy this defect. That IS a 6 month delay, which IS an unreasonable period of time for repair.

TL* the contact owns a 2010 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled as the service engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ignition coil needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 25,000. The vin was unavailable.
Many dashboard warning lights came on simultaneously while driving. took to BMW of rockville md. they diagnosed failure of "faulty steering angle sensor and coil spring." they confirmed this was a safety issue, and that it was nothing we did that caused it-- it was a faulty part. after only 33,000 miles, to have a critical part fail, seems serious to me. they charged us $2080.76 to fix, because it was outside warranty due to age of car. to my mind if a part fault or failure occurs, that IS a safety issue, a recall issue, not a warranty issue and the carmaker should fix and report it.
Received notice in june 2014 regarding recall campaign no. 14V-176: vanos assembly bolts. After an initial notice was received, from BMW of north america, llc, I have heard nothing further. A telephone call to/from the local BMW dealer suggested that I be patient and wait to be contacted when parts were available. The local dealer, BMW of sarasota IS a superior dealership - I have no complaints with them, only compliments. However, an e-mail sent to BMW customer relations, at the address contained in the recall notice, was not responded to. I was requesting a status update. My concern IS that a wall street journal article, o/a 8/4/2014, suggests negligent follow-up by the nhtsa regarding recalls. It suggests that a wait time for repairs of up to ten months or more, with no intervention by the nhtsa, IS the norm. I would like to know from the nhtsa what its responsibilities are with regard to the status of recalls, especially this one. Your contact information was indicated in the recall notice. This complaint IS about the nhtsa's lack of follow-up on vehicle safety recalls - not BMW. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2010 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the power steering system malfunctioned and caused the steering wheel to seize. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer, who diagnoses the vehicle as having a defective power steering pump. The dealer did not have the power steering pump. The contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint. The failure mileage was 51,000.
TL* the contact owns a 2010 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the muffler detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but they were unable to duplicate the problem. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000.
My wife was driving the car and she heard a clinking sound, it was the sun roof glass that shattered. my wife stopped at a hardware store taped the glass, and covered it with plastic. the glass could have flown off and damages cars( including ours) and injured people. *tr
Sudden loss of steering power while driving, unable to turn steering wheel while driving and attempting turn in major intersection. Heavy road traffic here in ft lauderdale, almost crashed with my 9 year old on way to school. This IS 3RD attempt to fix problem, car was returned but not properly fixed, took back to dealer next day with same issue & its still there after 14 days, concerned & fear for my family's safety and security while driving this BMW due to sudden loss of steering while turning & driving in city traffic! *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.
