On certain passenger vehicles, the engine auxiliary/cooling fan operation, including variable speed, IS electronically controlled. failure of the fan motor can cause the electrical circuitry of the fan control unit to overload and fail, causing the fan to stop operating.
If this were to occur, engine overheating and subsequent engine damage could result. in addition, it IS possible for the failure of the electrical circuitry to cause a fire in the fan control unit located in the front of the engine compartment.
Dealers will replace the fan. owner notification began september 28, 2001. this IS a supplement to a recall that began during september 2001 (see recall campaign 01v206). owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.

My vehicle IS a BMW Z8. It has come to the attention of the BMW Z8 owners and myself that there IS an inherent aluminum frame failure issue that IS known but not being addressed by BMW na. Upon traveling over a pothole the aluminum frame members in the front (shock towers) are known to bend causing irreversible damage to the al frame. BMW na has not developed a fix/repair for this problem and or addressed potential loss of frame integrity that BMW Z8 owners can face. BMW na has also not developed a preventative maintenance modification or fix that can prevent failure in the future. *Nm
After driving 7 miles, with no warning indicator lights or high temperature registering on a gauge, a fire started in the fan area and burned through the cowling above the radiator. the flame was extinguished with water after the cowling was destroyed.*ak
