Some pickup trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles equipped with a hydraulic pump driveshaft that can fracture, resulting in immediate loss of hydraulic power steering assist. on certain vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power brakes, the same condition can result in loss of power assist for braking after the reserve pressure IS depleted.
An inoperative pump can cause increased steering effort, and in hydro-boost equipped vehicles also increased braking effort, but does not completely eliminate the ability to steer or slow the vehicle.
Dealers will replace the hydraulic pump. the campaign began on february 14, 2005. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
I am one of the the lucky ones. I was pulling in my driveway and the rear brake line blew and the brake pedal went to the floor! I'm very lucky I did not go through my garage door! I have the truck at sutherland chevrolet waiting for the damages $$$$ I can't give you the mileage because it at the dealership. corroded brake lines!
I was involved in a head on collision with another vehicle, a larger GMC dually. I was traveling at 55 mph when the other vehicle entered my lane at near or equal speed and struck me head on. I had time to react by stomping the brakes but I seemed to not slow down. I had no where to turn all possible lanes of avoidance were blocked with smaller cars. The airbags did not deploy... It IS my understanding that by law cars/light trucks are required by law to have airbags if they are 1998 or newer. I understand a light truck to be up to 8,600 lbs gross weight with payload. This standard includes my truck, I sustained sever injuries to my neck/chest and ruptured discs in my back resulting in emergency back surgery. If I had airbags I am sure my injuries would not have been nearly as server and I my have not lost so much. Someone IS responsible for this and I would appreciate any and all assistance you can offer me. thank you *tr
Rusted thru break lines. *js
Approaching intersection green lite changed to red being first to get to crossing I applied my brakes and pedal went to floor!!! Needless to say I did not stop for red lite for 4 lane hi-way, pulled over a saw puddle forming from brake line, looking across the intersection there was a larger puddle appr. Where brake was applied. Thank god no cars were close, I sure if I hit some one the first would be said, a old man went through red lite, correct, no brakes!!!!!!! Was moving truck into drive way after it had been parked in the street. Upon pulling into the drive way I noticed I had no brakes. Turned truck off and checked under truck to find that there was brake fluid leaking from under the truck by the left rear wheel. Upon calling my mechanic I am told that this IS a normal thing with my year truck and that it was being investigated by the nhtsa because of the amount of complaints. oh and also it would cost almost 800.00 dollars to repair because the mechanic will not just replace one line because once one goes they all start to go based on his experience with my year truck. He does this for safety reasons. I have had the car towed to my mechanic to be repaired. Another 94.00 dollars. After again talking to my mechanic he tells me the brake line has corroded. *tr
Fuel gauge intermittent short in wiring at sending unit. Received recall notice about possible short causing explosion hazard. Contacted [xxx] chev. In hoover, al. And was told I was over mileage limit for recall. Does that mean it won't explode after 75,000 miles? I paid $916.00 for repairs. This sucks. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *Tr
2000 chevrolet silverado 1/2 ton 4WD. 114M. ABS activation under 6 mph......... No lockup, no reason. Escalated to total brake loss when this condition starts. Looked on the internet at similar complaints; primarily found: rusted and leaking brakelines, or malfunctioning ABS cured by removing the fuse for the ABS system. checked for fluid loss, there was none. Checked power booster and master cylinder; found no problems. removed the fuse for the ABS, problem fixed, brakes function normally. a brake system should not fail to a condition of no brakes when the ABS system malfunctions......... Google this and you will find numerous accidents/loss of vehicle control. *Tr
When applying brakes the ABS system kicks in and then releases when the brake system IS needed the most. The brake failure happens mostly when the brakes are engaged suddenly or when it IS or has rained. The rotors were turned down, new rear brake drums were installed, the system was flushed out, new front brake pads, and rear shoes were installed. It helped a little, but the problem still exists and IS only getting worse. The vehicle jerks like the rotors and/or drums are out of round, and they were also turned down twice already. I have removed the fuse for the ABS system so I at least have some sort of braking power. My brother inlaws truck was recalled for this problem but mine wasn't. No one around here seems to know how to fix the problem, even the chevrolet dealership couldn't fix it, all they did was adjust the rear brakes and when the drums got hot the brakes locked up. They loosened the adjustment so the brakes wouldn't lock up but the problem still exists. I've had 3 near mishaps trying to stop the vehicle in time. *Tr
Tl*-the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet pickup. The contact stated that intermittently he his unable to turn the steering wheel to the right. Lose of steering while driving increases the risk of vehicle crash. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and a technician advised him that because the warranty expired he would be responsible to pay for the repairs. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 150,000. updated 11/12/09 *cn the consumer stated there were times when the power steering would work and other times when the steering mechanism was not cooperating at all and wanted to steer to the left. updated 11/16/09 the consumer stated the lack of power steeing assist has been an issue since 2003. It started as an intermittent problem in the mornings, after sitting overnight. updated 11/17/10
While driving my brake pedal went to the floor board and I had no brakes. The failure was a rusted brake line that ruptured. I queried the service manager at my local chevy dealer and him, along with 3 service tech's standing around said it IS a known problem and all the brake lines fail after 4 to 6 years due to rust. I asked if there was a recall and found out one does not exist. At present my truck IS at the dealers getting repaired. I was able to stop the vehicle by down shifting and applying the ebrake and no accident occurred. When I inspected the lines all the lines were rusted from beginning to end as well as the connector that adjusts the ebrake tension. I think something should be published warning of this failure. *Tr
Entering parking space at work when ABS system came on for no reason causing vehicle to lunge forward. *jb
Have a 2000 chevy silverado Z71 started having problems with unwanted antilock brake activation at low speed brake applications which resulted in several close calls. Contacted dealer after finding recall #05v379000 which has limited recall to so called "salt belt" states. Told dealer that I have traveled frequently through salt belt states and his reply was the recall did not effect me and there was nothing they could do. But it IS same problem listed in recall. Also told me that there IS recall on airbag sensor for my vehicle" 02v178000" but my vehicle would not have recall performed because of mileage. *Tr

ABS brake system does not work correctly. Brakes do not work at slow speed. *nm
Repeated activation of anti lock braking system at slow speeds when brakes are being activated for normal stopping. braking distance IS increased with sensation that vehicle may not stop as normal
I started to get brake peddle vibration at low speed. I pulled into a store parking lot and truck wouldn't stop until it ran into parking bumper. I took it to my dealer and they changed a wheel sensor (paid for by my extended warrenty).
I was driving my 2000 chevrolet pick up (4 wheel drive silverado) when, without any noise or other type of warning the power steering went out. I took the truck to have it repaired and the mechanic said they had done three or for of these. The problem IS that the shaft in the power steering pump snaps in half where it has been milled to form the gear. This IS very dangerous because it IS very difficult to maintain control of the vehicle, because it takes a very strong person to even turn the wheel slightly with no power steering.
The fuel gauge on my 2000 silverado does not work. evidently, there IS a problem with the sensor in the tank reacting to the additives in the gasoline. This braks the sensor down and causes the fuel filter to clog and to make the pump work harder and fail. I know of 5 or 6 people in my circle of friends and co-workers who have experienced this problem. I appreciate any help, like I said I know of quite few people with this problem who would love to take gm down on this. Please contact me with any info, thanks again, bob. *Jb damage resulting = huge cost, over $700.00 at a gm dealer. possible engine failure as fuel filter clogs and fule pump fails.
*ak the safety belts and air bags of the urban, tahoe, sonara, pickup, and yukon are of no use. they are defective and do not protect the user in cases of crashes. the bred factory knows about these problems and did not want to fix the problem to avoid costs and judgements. Accelerator pedal requires excessive effort to move. This has resulted in several near accidents when my vehicle lurched forward upon the pedal un-sticking. Most recent incident involved my wife, un-familier with the problem, having to stomp on the pedal while in heavy traffic on a rainy day. The result of the pedal un-sticking was that the vehicle lurched forward towards another vehicle. My wife barely avoided hitting another vehicle but only by swerving off of the road and into a ditch. Our 6 year old son and 6 month old daughter was in the vehicle at the time.*ak
Both tailgate support cables snapped upon lowering. *la
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
Odi's review of complaint data received since the close of ea04-011 revealed no indication that the investigation should be re-opened.more details can be found in the federal register notice enclosed in the dp05-009 public file.odi reserves the right to reopen the investigation in the future should conditions warrant.
Gm IS conducting a recall on all subject vehicles build between may 1999 and october 14, 1999.significant changes were incorporated into production in early october 1999, and vehicles built after that date have lower warranty failure rates.the complaint and warranty data appear to support the effectiveness of these changes. Gm made additional changes in november 1999, february 2000, may 2001, and february 2004.odi will continue to monitor this problem and will take further action, if warranted, in the future.for further technical details see the attached engineering analysis report.
In a letter dated april 20, 2005, gm notified nhtsa that it had decided that defects that relate to motor vehicle safety exist in certain model year (my) 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series (pbr parking brake system) and my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series (trw parking brake system) pickups with manual transmissions.according to gm, some of these vehicles may have conditions that cause the friction linings to wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.gm's action covers an estimated total of 142,585 vehicles.dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with the pbr parking brake system and install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly on vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system. A total of 58 non-duplicative complaints were received by odi and gm concerning the approximately 59,000 my 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series pickup trucks with the pbr parking brake system.these included 22 alleged rollaway incidents, resulting in a rate of 38.5 rollaway incidents per 100,000 vehicles.odi IS aware of 24 complaints regarding the my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series manual transmission trucks recalled by gm, including 5 alleging rollaway incidents.though the conditions described in gm's letter are also present in the c/k trucks with automatic transmissions, the rollaway rate in those vehicles was similar to those observed in peer vehicles studied by odi in this investigation.this engineering analysis IS closed. For additional information, see the attached closing report.
Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles.these vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake system's torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface.this part IS also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.gm has indicated that the paking brake IS intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear IS caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. Odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.
The automatic locking retractor (alr) IS a feature incorporated in the subject vehicle for locking the webbing to properly secure a child safety seat into a vehicle.this pe was opened based on a gm technical service bulletin stating that with certain child safety seats the webbing may not remain locked.there are no complaints in the odi database and only two complaints to gm.gm's instructions state for the final step in using the webbing lock feature to push and pull the child restraint to be sure it IS secure. If the alr IS not locked, the user would be fully aware of this condition prior to completing proper installation of the child safety seat in this vehicle.this investigation did not uncover any complaints of the alr inadvertently unlocking while the vehicle IS in motion.the emergency locking retractor (elr) feature remains available to lock the retractor in a crash.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation IS closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached summary for additional information.
Alleged that the vacuum brake booster can fail resulting in loss of brake effectiveness and extended stopping distances.
