Sway bar light was flashing, brought to dealer needed new electronic sway bar due to corrosion. This IS enclosed and should have no corrosion I was concerned that my jeep may go into a death wobble if I drove over 18 miles per hour. My jeep has only 40,000 miles.i believe there IS a defect due to complaints I viewed online I not the only one so actuator, stabilizer bar, wiring chassis, screw & ret push code u1159 was showing. Power wire was corroded and weak cleaned & bent pin new wiring harness was needed. After 2260.00 I got my jeep back2
On the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there IS something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags.this has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. This faulty clockspring IS the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. Daimler chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying.
Horn goes on & stays on, wipers go continuously, wiper fluid flows constantly, back up lights go on, heater fan goes off & on, the engine continues to run with the key out of the ignition and the last time the ABS came on while I was delivering mail and my brakes locked up. Once it happened while parked ( the engine was running without keys), all other times I was driving on rural roads and in developments, both driving home & delivering mail. I have video on my phone of the occurrence two separate times.
When trying to fill gas tank it will not take the fuel as it shuts the pump off. It takes about 20 minutes to put in $10 worth of gas in. It has progressively gotten worse.
Gears engaging with delay as vehicle gets hot. When putting the jeep from the park position into drive, the vehicle has a delay engaging which gets worse the warmer or hotter the car gets and or the longer it runs. This problem became worse over the last 12 months. I have seen several people complaining about the same/similar problem in certain specific blogs/forums and in few cases the vehicle has actually caught on fire, so now I am wondering if this IS a major safety issue and what to do about it. *tr
The gas tank can not be filled without constantly re-starting the fuel pump, it stops every few seconds, it happens at every gas station or any fuel pump, so it IS definitely not the pump but a problem with the jeep gas tank and/or it's components. It got worse over the last few weeks and months and IS to the point now where it takes me 10-15 minutes to fill up 11 -15 gallons of fuel. The gas tank was replaced under a recall back in 2011 (at approx. 34000 miles) where with the old tank the fuel pump would not stop in time when full and therefore it resulted in the "spill-back" problem every time. This problem was fixed with replacement after recall, but now I have the problem that I just have this extremely difficult time filling the tank. *tr
My 2008 jeep wrangler rhd caught fire while I was driving. I was turning onto the hwy and drove a few feet and noticed smoke. I immediately pulled off of the road, shut the car off and popped the hood. As soon as I lifted the hood I saw flames!! I contacted jeep and they're "supposed to be doing an investigation". There wasn't any kind of warning the car wasn't even running any differently. Scary stuff especially from a vehicle that wasn't giving me any problems. Disappointed to say the least, but folks need to know for safety reasons. vehicle IS a total loss!! *tr
Engine warning light came on upon starting vehicle. Checked all fluids, and that gas cap was tight. Contacted dealership who said to drive it for a few days to see if light remained on. Indicator light went off several days later. My engine IS now exhibiting what sounds like a stuck lifter and chrysler IS refusing to honor the warranty on the lifetime powertrain warranty. I also had a steering dampener fail on the vehicle at 32K miles which chrysler made me pay half for fixing. *tr
My airbag sensor light keeps turning off and on while I'm driving. *tr
I am tired of not being able to fill up my gas tank all the way. I've had to stop the gas pump a gallon or two before my tank IS full so I won't waste gas or get any gasoline spilled on me. Every time I take my jeep in for service or an oil change I always ask if there IS a recall yet to fix this gas spillage problem. I have had so many other recalls & other problems with my jeep I just don't understand how this one issue has not been seriously addressed yet. I'm tired of having to babysit a gas pump every time I put ten or eleven gallons in. It wouldn't be such a problem if this jeep would get better gas mileage but it doesn't so I am at the gas station more often than I should be just because I can't ever fill up my tank all the way. *tr
At interstate speeds my jeep started what IS commonly known as the "jeep death shake" forcing me to the side of the interstate and almost losing control. *tr
Rear steel brake lines mounted to frame for rear wheels coming into contact with rear sway bar. noted noise. this noise IS a light "clacking" metal sound and could only be heard at moderate speed when on the trail or going through "dips" on public streets with side window down. while rotating tires suspension IS checked. discovered rub marks on steel brake lines under the frame next to the rear sway bar. driver's side was worn, passenger side had black paint rubbed off on it. no damage or chafing to either rubber brake lines making final connection to rear hubs. noted frame clips attached to steel line holding brake line away and into contact zone of sway bar when suspension cycles. rough measurements between axle and bump stop IS about 2/3 cycle when sway bar hits brake line. estimate suspension does not bottom out or contact bump stop when brake lines are being hit by sway bar. wrote chrysler an e-mail regarding this issue. after two days received a response that read like a "sales brochure" or "commercial" not acknowledging anything that I had mentioned about the brake lines. then the second paragraph pointed out I had not complied with a "tow bar" recall and that I should. which I had last year. the reason I report this now. last year the jeep was on recall for the front brake lines being rubbed by the inner fender wells. which was taken care of by a local dealer ship. in retrospect of the front brake line recall. thought I would bring this to your attention. might this same model have had a rear brake line routing issue too? in the case you may want a copy of the above mentioned e-mail and response please don't hesitate. *tr
I was told by the jeep mechanic I have to replace the clock spring, I had this replaced already at about 40,000 miles. I noticed there IS a recall, mine isn't on that list and I feel it should be. I have no horn and airbag light IS on all the time. *tr
The air bag light comes on intermittently while driving. Had it checked last year 1/14/11, the dealersship inspected and found code for clock spring, replaced clock spring and cleared codes and system was operating properly at the time. The dearlership charged 364.48. Now it IS one year later and the airbag light IS back on. It goes on and off the whole time whlie you are diving. I think this should me looked into because if the airbags goes off while your diving, it could cause you to have a crash or injury or death to you or someone else in another vehicle. *tt
A broken clockspring led to an airbag light illumination as well as failure in the esp and bas systems. *Tr
When fueling--once gas hose clicks off, gas belches out of the tank. *tt
TL* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler 2-DR 4x4rhd. While the contact was driving approximately 40 mph, the air bag warning indicator illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the air bag clock spring was replaced. Nine months later, the failure recurred and the contact notified the dealer who ordered the part and upon availability the vehicle would be repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated there was no related recalls. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000. updated 09/28/11*lj updated 2/28/12 *cn
2008 rhd jeep wrangler air bag light IS on meaning airbag will not deploy if an accident occurs. Clock spring/corrosion issue causing horn not to work which IS a safety hazard. Many mail carriers are having the exact same problems with these vehicles. Vehicle will not always start. This whole vehicle should be recalled as it has major electrical issues. The motor went out on mine at 52,000 miles. The warranty IS only for 36,000 miles. The motor was rebuilt by a jeep dealer and I was told it had a spun bearing. The air blower controller also does not work half of the time. these rhd jeeps are all lemons and pose safety hazards to mail carriers who spend most of their day out on the road. The horn issue IS a threat to the public as you cannot warn an unsuspecting driver or pedestrian of your process. The airbag issue IS a threat to the driver. You spend $25,000 on a vehicle, you expect better. *tr
Clock spring issue, computer recall, brake recall, trans. Cooler line recall, fuel tank recall (tank replaced three times). Engine short block replacement at 30,000 miles due to poor quality of manufacturer. *tr
2008 jeep wrangler rhd postal vehicles used by rural carriers for usps. Those of us who purchased the vehicles are having issues with airbag malfunction indicator light and no horn use or intermittent usage. One item of interest possible cause IS the springclock in the steering column as component that operates both horn and air bag circuits. This item has been a problem in years past with jeep. Concerned with a deployment of faulty air bag issue mostly, trying to get my vehicle in for a complete investigation. Technicians are by appointment only when they are in. Forums at ruralinfo.net confirm others are having these same issues. My vehicle has 50K miles when problem occurred. *Tr
Airbag light turns on. air bag won't deploy if the light IS on. the clockspring IS bad. *tr
Clockspring went out on this jeep at about 38,000 miles and 69,000 miles, causing the airbag light to come on, rendering the airbags inoperable. had clockspring replaced both times to fix the problem. jeep now has about 97,000 miles on it and the airbag light IS on again. we have another bad clockspring. jeep has had a recall on the clockspring for previous models. since jeep has recalled previous models for this same problem, and judging by the amount of complaints about the clockspring I have read on other web sites, you would think jeep would do the right thing and recall it and fix it properly. I have had several other cars with well over 100,000 miles on them and never had a clockspring go out before. I presently have two subarus each with almost 300,000 miles on them with no clockspring problem. jeep IS supposed to be a rugged vehicle, but so far I have been extremely disappointed in it and consider it no more rugged than a plastic toy version. this IS not just a nuisance, but a real safety problem if the jeep were in a collision when the airbag was inoperative due to a bad clockspring. *tr
Had clockspring replaced at about 40,000 miles because the airbag light was coming on. jeep now has about 69,000 miles on it and the clockspring went bad again. had it replaced again to fix the airbag light problem. this IS an extremely common occurance on this vehicle and could easily cause death in a collision if the airbag did not depoy due to a manufacturer's defect. nhtsa and/or jeep should have a recall. *tr
Airbag light came on intermittently. repair shop diagnosed clock spring. replaced it. problem was eliminated. I see this IS a common occurrence for this vehicle. jeep should have a recall and fix it at no cost. only had about 38,000 miles on the vehicle when the clock spring went bad. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler 2-DR 4X4R HD. The contact was driving approximately 35 mph when there was a sudden loss of steering control without warning. The contact was able to safely maneuver the vehicle from the roadway and noticed that the steering shaft was detached. The contact temporarily repaired the steering shaft and reattached it to the gear box. The vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic where the steering shaft was replaced. The failure mileage was 89,144. updated 5/24/11 *cn updated 06/03/11
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
In a letter dated August 21, 2014, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged failures associated with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) installed in Chrysler SUV?s, trucks, and vans beginning in the 2007 model year. The petitioner alleges that TIPM defects may result in engine stall, airbag non-deployment, failure of fuel pump shutoff resulting in unintended acceleration, fire, and other symptoms. On September 25, 2014, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened DP14-004 to evaluate the petition for a grant or deny decision. ODI analyzed complaint data provided by CAS as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 296 complaints submitted by the petitioner in the original petition and five supplements, including 271 complaints related to the subject vehicles equipped with TIPM-7. Approximately 3 percent of CAS complaints are related to vehicles equipped with TIPM-6 and ODI?s review of these complaints did not identify any safety defect trends. ODI conducted a detailed review of complaints narratives submitted by CAS and consumers including careful analysis of vehicle repair histories, warranty claims obtained from the manufacturer and any available Customer Assistance Inquiry reports (CAIR). Analysis of the field data indicated that MY2011-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles exhibited significantly higher complaint rates related to fuel pump relay (FPR) failures than other subject vehicles. In a September 3, 2014 letter to NHTSA, Chrysler submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) identifying a defect in the FPR within the TIPM-7 which can result in a no start or stall condition in approximately 188,723 model year (MY) 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) and Dodge Durango (WD) vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010 through July 20, 2011 (14V-530).In a February 24, 2015 letter, Chrysler submitted a second DIR expanding the scope of the FPR defect condition to include an additional 338,216 MY 2012 through 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured from September 17, 2010 through August 19, 2013 and MY 2012 through 2013 Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 18, 2011 through August 19, 2013 (15V-115).ODI analysis of the CAS allegations of TIPM defects resulting in stall while driving, airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration, fire and other faults identified a single defect condition related to 1 of over 60 different circuits in the TIPM assembly. The most common effect of this defect condition, related to the fuel pump relay, was a no-start concern, but it could also result in stall while driving (76 complaints). No valid evidence was presented in support of claims related to airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration or fire resulting from TIPM faults and these claims were found to be wholly without merit based on review of the field data and design of the relevant systems and components.Except insofar as the petitioner's contentions relate to the defect condition addressed by the Chrysler recalls, the factual bases of the petitioner's contentions that any further investigation is necessary are unsupported. In our view, additional investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists or a NHTSA order for the notification and remedy of a safety-related defect as alleged by the petitioner at the conclusion of the requested investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is den
In its July 29, 2011 response to ODI's May 27, 2011 information request letter, Chrysler provided 153 MY 2007-2008 owner reports, additional to the 28 ODI Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs), which related to the illumination of the air bag light (ABL) due to a faulty clockspring (CS) wiring circuit. The right hand drive (RHD) vehicles, which were first produced in MY 2008 and account for only 1% of vehicle production, accounted for 82 of these 181 reports (45%).The MY2007 left hand drive (LHD) vehicle accounted for 61 of the remaining 92 LHD reports and exhibited a higher complaint rate than the MY 2008 LHD vehicles.ODI did not identify any incidents of crashes/injuries attributable to the CS circuit failure.Since May 27, 2011, ODI has received another 32 consumer complaints bringing the total to 213 reports at this closing. In addition, and for comparative purposes, Chrysler provided another 42 owner reports it received on the MY2006 and MY2009-2010 Wrangler vehicles; these populations showed a lower incident rate than the subject vehicles, especially in comparison to the RHD subject vehicles. Chrysler's investigation showed that the higher rate of RHD Wrangler CS failures were due to a more severe duty cycle for these vehicles which are primarily used by US Postal workers/mail carriers delivering mail in rural regions.Chrysler concluded the unique vehicle usage, much of which occurs with the driver's window open and under dusty environmental conditions, is the cause of premature CS failure.Chrysler's analysis also indicated that the somewhat elevated MY2007 LHD rate, which showed a declining failure trend, was the result of start-up production/assembly issues that occurred with the introduction of a new design CS.The new design CS incorporated both dual airbag inflator circuitry and a steering wheel angle sensor (for the electronic stability control system). On November 1, 2011, Chrysler submitted a defect notice indicating it will conduct a recall of all MY 2008-2012 RHD Wrangler vehicles (11V528).The estimated 5,334 RHD Wrangler vehicles include the 2,297 MY 2008 RHD Wrangler vehicles, which were the subject of this investigation, plus an additional 3,037 MY 2009-2012 RHD Wrangler vehicles that Chrysler determined potentially have a similar CS concern as the MY 2008 RHD vehicles.Chrysler intends to replace the existing CS with a yet-to-be-produced improved CS assembly, or an improved steering housing assembly that is less susceptible to dusty environments.Owner notice is scheduled to begin in November, 2011.Chrysler also informed ODI that it intends to initiate a consumer satisfaction campaign for MY2007 LHD Wrangler which will extend the CS warranty coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles.Accordingly the investigation is closed.
ODI found the rate of warranty claims related to fuel spit back on the subject vehicles is lower than other vehicles previously recalled to correct defects related to fuel spit back.Although the rate of complaints reported to the agency on the subject vehicles is higher than or similar to the rates experienced in previous investigations where safety recalls were conducted, ODI suspects that the NHTSA safety complaints submitted by subject vehicles owners may have been influenced by internet related publicity both before and during this investigation.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that no safety-related defect exists. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.See attached report for additional information. In addition, Chrysler is initiating a lifetime warranty program, at no cost to the consumer, to address the fuel spit back problem in approximately 135,000 model year 2007-2008 Jeep Wrangler vehicles built from March 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008.Chrysler will notify all affected vehicle owners of this action.Consumers should refer to the warranty and service bulletins and sample owner notification letter available in the investigative file. The vehicle build date can be found on the certification label located on the driver door or door jamb.
The defective tow bar assemblies involved in this recall were supplied to chrysler for use on some of its jeep wrangler vehicles.the purpose of this investigation was to identify any additional purchasers of identical or substantially similar defective assemblies and to initiate additional defect reporting and safety recalls as necessary.to accomplish this rmd contacted the supplier of the assemblies, valley towing products, and confirmed no other such assemblies were distributed.this eq IS therefore closed.
