Safety record from NHTSA: recalls, owner complaints, investigations and service bulletins.
These records cover every 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
I bought my jeep 12/12/16 and it had 43,319 miles on it. on 2/7/17 at 45,233 miles I had the first engine replacement done. on 5/17/17 at 46,552 miles I had the transmission rebuilt. on 11/1/18 at 65,858 miles I had the second engine replacement. on 3/8/19 at 68,980 miles I had the third replacement engine installed. I got my jeep back on 4/15/19 and now I hear a ticking like sound and I'm told it could be an exhaust leak. also, before I got the third engine installed the jeep would pop out of first gear when I start to accelerate, just like before. I talked to the mechanic who rebuilt my transmission and he said this IS a common problem with the 2007 jeep wrangler. he said he could fix it, but eventually it will start popping out of first gear again.
Every time I fill the jeep with gas, about a cup of fuel spills back out of the filler neck before the pump shuts off.
Airbag light come on for 2-3 seconds and turn off for 5 second to 1 minutes and come back on. Now light IS permanently on. this could be related to the takata recall but my vehicle IS not included.
When filling the parked, shut-off vehicle with gasoline there IS regular spillover. Regardless of gas station and pump, the pump does not detect fill and automatically shut off. This has been a frequent issue for about a year.
My jeep IS experiencing the "death wobble". it almost turned over on I-85 outside of atlanta. my daughter was driving at 55mph and there was a small dip in the road. the jeep began to shake uncontrollably. she could hardly control the steering wheel or the jeep. we were finally able to slow down enough (almost rear ended twice) and pull over. this IS not isolated. we had the jeep in for repairs before and everything listed for repair of the death wobble replaced. it IS doing it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you need to recall these jeeps and make chrysler fix them before someone like my 23 year old dies!!!!!!!!!!!!1
My jeep has the "death wobble"- I've spent over $1000 trying to fix it. When going over 50 on a highway, a slow shake quickly turns into a violent shaking of the jeep back and forth until I'm almost stopped (5pmph-ish) on the middle of a busy highway. I was almost rear-ended the other day, and am petrified to bring it on the highway now.
No matter how long the jeep runs I only have heat on the passengers side. I have verified that my blend doors are working. Living in colorado this IS a huge issue, my windshield does not defrost completely.
Drove up to my house and parked the jeep (after driving 8-10 miles). went inside the house. within 10 minutes went back outside and smoke was boiling out from under the hood and it was dripping fire on the ground. fully involved very quickly.
Fuel spit back problem, everytime I fuel up gas pukes out and doesnt cut off when its full
Gasoline splillover when filling vehicle at all gas stations/pumps. Vehicle turned off. Pump set to fill or manually held, the issue occurs. This has been ongoing since december 2017 though putting current date/last fill up below.
My jeep with 86K miles engine blew. one week earlier when driving over 40 miles per hour it seemed to wobble a bit from left to right, I thought maybe it was because I had 4 wheel drive on. I have only owned it for a month and it IS a 2ND vehicle and I was not sure if that was normal or not. then after not driving the vehicle for 4 days I moved it out of my driveway and was less then a block from my home when the oil light came on and half a block later the engine cut out. the car wouldnt start again and I had it towed to the dealer where I purchased it. they told me the internal fuel pump seemed to malfunction and the engine was blown! when I returned home I noticed a pool of oil in my driveway. this car sat for days and was barely driven by me since my purchase. how does an engine at 86K miles just blow? how does oil just dump out of a vehicle? why? Well doing internet research it appears that this 2007 engine year there was a mistake in the engines where pistons were put in upside down? there was no recall for this and many 2007 jeeps have had this happen. I am lucky it happened on a local road, if I was driving 65 in middle lane of a highway and my engine just shut off I would be dead. I couldnt steer it. it just stopped..... I have tried calling chrysler and have been transfered many times to other people, I am at a loss of what to do. again, I have had this vehicle 1.5 months...
On monday october 16, 2017 I started my jeep to leave for work. as I backed out of my parking space at my apartment and felt the brake pedal go to the floor. I almost hit a nearby car but was able to pull the car into an opposite parking space and the curb helped me stop the car. I had been driving the car the day before without any indication of a problem. I was able to have the car towed to a nearby repair center. the mechanic called me to explain that the brake cable had corroded and that this was the second older jeep that he had seen with this problem. he suggested that I notify you to report this issue. I'm counting my blessings that this happened in my parking lot and not a few minutes later when I would have been traveling on the interstate at 70 mph. the total cost of my repair was $446 because the brake system has been redesigned according to the mechanic. it IS my hope that enough of these problems will be reported and that jeep will conduct a safety recall for this problem. I am attaching a picture of my driver's side brake and also a copy of my repair bill. please let me know if you need further information or what steps I can take to ensure that no one else will have this potential failure of their brakes causing a serious accident. sincerely, [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *tr
While driving at highway speed, if you hit a rough spot on the road, it starts to shimmy and the steering wheel starts to violently jerk back and forth. The front tires are wobbling. You have to be extremely gripping the steering wheel and push on the brake as hard as you can without loosing control of the vehicle to get it stoped.
TL* takata recall. The contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler sahara. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v352000 (air bags); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
Jeep death wobble in my 2007 jeep wrangler. no rhyme or reason, car will begin to violently shake between 45 - 65 mph. I have to completely stop and pull car to side of road in order to make this stop. incredibly scary and dangerous. have gone to to dealership and everyone has a different opinion all of which are unbelievable in cost when it comes to safety.
Death wobble-have had this problem repaired and comes back. Cannot drive over 55 mph in city or highway without entire car starting to violently shake. Will shake for about a minute and stop on its own. Very scary and dangerous. Have had this problem for over a year
I originally took my jeep in to the dealer ship because every time I would fill up the gas would overflow. They said that they replaced he filler neck because there was a recall on that. Now it takes 30 minutes to fill up the tank from 1/4 tank because the gas pump will click off every 2 seconds.
When I turn the key it reads invalid skim key and will not crank unless the key IS pushed into the cylinder when a great deal of force.
Takata recall . I was given a recall notice early in 2016 . The jeep dealer in n miami said the parts were on back order and they will notify when they arrive. nothing has happened in 1 year. I am most apprehensive to drive the vehicle on major roads . this IS a life threatening problem and nothing IS being done . please advise
My jeep will start but no gauges or light on dash come on, the wipers turn on at full power. when this happens the jeep will not shift out of park. I have been told the tipm IS causing the issues.
I almost had fatal crash with my children because of 'death wobble'. It's not funny & jeep needs to be sued for refusing to address this issue! Over 50 times when traveling 65 mph the vehicles shakes uncontrollably forcing me to come to a complete stop on the highway. Why are they allowed to get away with this!!!
My car caught on fire while driving from ok to tx, before the fire my brakes went out and my wheel was locked. between a minute of running out of the car with my baby my car was completely in flames, my jeep was at the dealer 2 weeks ago for service, I never have a dashboard warning, car was working perfectly until caught in fire, oh before my breaks went out my car started to lost power and the fire started under the hood (passenger seat) we need some answers, that's not fsir....updated 08/08/16 *bf...updated 08/30/16 *bf *cn
"Takata recall" I was driving my jeep wrangler 2007 when I started to lost power and I try to move to the emergency line but my brakes went out and my wheel were locked, I was not able to control my car at all, after my car abruptly stop I run to get my child out and my car was on flames under the hood (passenger side) I didn't have a warning, I checked my dashboard and nothing was on, my car was at the chrysler dealer for service two weeks ago and pass state inspection last week. That's IS not acceptable, I didn't have time to get my bag and wallet, my car was on flames. Chrysler need to do something about it. We need some answers. my car was in motion, in a highway.
Jeep violently pops out of first gear when trying to accelerate l. Happens all the time. From doing research online this seems to be a common problem with people who own the manual transmission jeep jk model. This can be exceptionally dangerous when going through intersections or changing lanes as the jeep will pop out if gear and no longer accelerate. This has happened since day one of me purchasing it.
TL* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler sahara. The contact stated that when the gear was shifted, the clutch plate squeaked without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the clutch plate needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 92,000.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On May 10, 2016, Fiat Chrysler America (FCA) submitted a Part 573 Defect Information Report announcing NHTSA recall 16V290 involving 394,258 model year (MY) 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler vehicles.Under the recall FCA will replace the clockspring and install a steering wheel back cover and steering wheel column shroud. This recall also includes approx. 4,524 MY2007-2010 right hand drive (RHD) Jeep Wrangler vehicles commonly used for rural postal delivery services. In addition 7,180 MY 2011-2016 right hand drive Jeep Wrangler vehicles were also recalled under 16V288, the same remedy repair will be used.Upon review of the 1,942 MY 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler consumer complaints, 17,195 warranty reports and field returned parts assessment, FCA concluded that a defect exists in the driver side clockspring assembly, a device that both connects (electrically) the driver air bag to the control module and allows rotational movement between the steering wheel and fixed steering column.Clockspring failure may compromise the air bag circuit causing illumination of the air bag warning lamp, and may result in non-deployment of the driver air bag in a frontal crash.FCA identified a contributing factor in that the recalled vehicles may be subjected to off-road dusty environments and/or usage with the vehicle roof top/doors removed thus allowing dust and moisture to enter the clockspring assembly.FCA advised that the MY 2011 and later Wrangler vehicles had an improved steering column cover/shroud that may reduce the amount of dirt/moisture that can enter the clockspring assembly.During the investigation FCA and the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) also reviewed 193 MY 2011-2012 Jeep Wrangler consumer complaints, 3,918 warranty reports and field returned parts along with reports from other FCA vehicles that use the same clockspring assembly.Based on this review, the rate of repair and the failure mode does not indicate a defect trend at this time in the later MY Wrangler or other FCA vehicles.During the field return parts review, FCA found a significant number of MY 2011-2012 Wrangler returned parts that operated normally, the so called ?no trouble found? or NTF parts where no fault could be identified through bench testing. On June 10, 2016, FCA informed ODI of its intention to conduct a 15-yr, 150k mile extended warranty program due to the NTF issue and the MY 2011 and later vehicles having a somewhat elevated level of warranty replacement.Consumers will be notified of the program in writing.FCA will collect clocksprings replaced under the warranty extension program to further examine and study the root cause failure.ODI will monitor FCA?s analysis to determine if any further field action is warranted.Based on the actions taken by FCA to recall the MY 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler vehicles and the MY 2008-2016 right hand drive Wrangler vehicles, this investigation is closed.FCA has also agreed to conduct a warranty extension and further evaluation of the MY 2011-2016 Wrangler. At the time of FCA's field data submission in PE 15-025 (September 2015), ODI was aware of a total of 416 MY 2007-2010 and 23 MY 2011-2012 VOQs relevant to this issue. In addition, there have been an additional 90 and 16 VOQs (respectively) received since the recall announcement (i.e., thru May 2016).The reports noted above can be viewed at SaferCar.gov under the reference (ODI) numbers cited on the attached listing.
In it's response to ODI's PE15-025 Information Request letter, FCA identified 1,703 consumer complaints, field reports and legal claims responsive to the subject defect condition on the subject Wrangler vehicles.Six of these reports alleged an air bag non-deployment in a crash in which either the air bag warning light was allegedly on or came on afterward the crash, one of which also alleged injuries as a result of the non-deployment.FCA also provided data on other make, model and model year vehicles using the same clockspring.Additionally FCA provided 16,955 warranty claims related to the replacement of the air bag clockspring wiring assembly. It should be noted that FCA initiated an Extended Warranty Program on the left hand drive MY 2007 Wrangler in late calendar year 2011.6,777 of these claims are from the MY 2007 left hand drive Wrangler.FCA advises that some of the warranty claims involved clockspring failures that would not affect the air bag operation, for example due to noise, cruise control and/or radio operation issues. Many of these claims involved newer model year subject vehicles.FCA also noted that Wrangler's removable roof and door configuration may make it more susceptible to outdoor water/moisture and dust ingress.ODI investigated the right hand drive Wrangler in calender year 2011 for a similar clockspring issue under PE11-019.That investigation lead to NHTSA Safety Recall 11V258 on right hand drive model year (MY) 2008-2012 Wranglers.FCA redesigned the remedy clockspring to improve its durability and environmental protection and revised the design of the steering wheel to column shroud.Base on the data reviewed, this Preliminary Analysis (PE) is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA).The reports cited above are listed in the public investigative file available at SaferCar.gov under this investigation ID.
In a letter dated August 21, 2014, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged failures associated with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) installed in Chrysler SUV?s, trucks, and vans beginning in the 2007 model year. The petitioner alleges that TIPM defects may result in engine stall, airbag non-deployment, failure of fuel pump shutoff resulting in unintended acceleration, fire, and other symptoms. On September 25, 2014, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened DP14-004 to evaluate the petition for a grant or deny decision. ODI analyzed complaint data provided by CAS as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 296 complaints submitted by the petitioner in the original petition and five supplements, including 271 complaints related to the subject vehicles equipped with TIPM-7. Approximately 3 percent of CAS complaints are related to vehicles equipped with TIPM-6 and ODI?s review of these complaints did not identify any safety defect trends. ODI conducted a detailed review of complaints narratives submitted by CAS and consumers including careful analysis of vehicle repair histories, warranty claims obtained from the manufacturer and any available Customer Assistance Inquiry reports (CAIR). Analysis of the field data indicated that MY2011-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles exhibited significantly higher complaint rates related to fuel pump relay (FPR) failures than other subject vehicles. In a September 3, 2014 letter to NHTSA, Chrysler submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) identifying a defect in the FPR within the TIPM-7 which can result in a no start or stall condition in approximately 188,723 model year (MY) 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) and Dodge Durango (WD) vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010 through July 20, 2011 (14V-530).In a February 24, 2015 letter, Chrysler submitted a second DIR expanding the scope of the FPR defect condition to include an additional 338,216 MY 2012 through 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured from September 17, 2010 through August 19, 2013 and MY 2012 through 2013 Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 18, 2011 through August 19, 2013 (15V-115).ODI analysis of the CAS allegations of TIPM defects resulting in stall while driving, airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration, fire and other faults identified a single defect condition related to 1 of over 60 different circuits in the TIPM assembly. The most common effect of this defect condition, related to the fuel pump relay, was a no-start concern, but it could also result in stall while driving (76 complaints). No valid evidence was presented in support of claims related to airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration or fire resulting from TIPM faults and these claims were found to be wholly without merit based on review of the field data and design of the relevant systems and components.Except insofar as the petitioner's contentions relate to the defect condition addressed by the Chrysler recalls, the factual bases of the petitioner's contentions that any further investigation is necessary are unsupported. In our view, additional investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists or a NHTSA order for the notification and remedy of a safety-related defect as alleged by the petitioner at the conclusion of the requested investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is den
In its July 29, 2011 response to ODI's May 27, 2011 information request letter, Chrysler provided 153 MY 2007-2008 owner reports, additional to the 28 ODI Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs), which related to the illumination of the air bag light (ABL) due to a faulty clockspring (CS) wiring circuit. The right hand drive (RHD) vehicles, which were first produced in MY 2008 and account for only 1% of vehicle production, accounted for 82 of these 181 reports (45%).The MY2007 left hand drive (LHD) vehicle accounted for 61 of the remaining 92 LHD reports and exhibited a higher complaint rate than the MY 2008 LHD vehicles.ODI did not identify any incidents of crashes/injuries attributable to the CS circuit failure.Since May 27, 2011, ODI has received another 32 consumer complaints bringing the total to 213 reports at this closing. In addition, and for comparative purposes, Chrysler provided another 42 owner reports it received on the MY2006 and MY2009-2010 Wrangler vehicles; these populations showed a lower incident rate than the subject vehicles, especially in comparison to the RHD subject vehicles. Chrysler's investigation showed that the higher rate of RHD Wrangler CS failures were due to a more severe duty cycle for these vehicles which are primarily used by US Postal workers/mail carriers delivering mail in rural regions.Chrysler concluded the unique vehicle usage, much of which occurs with the driver's window open and under dusty environmental conditions, is the cause of premature CS failure.Chrysler's analysis also indicated that the somewhat elevated MY2007 LHD rate, which showed a declining failure trend, was the result of start-up production/assembly issues that occurred with the introduction of a new design CS.The new design CS incorporated both dual airbag inflator circuitry and a steering wheel angle sensor (for the electronic stability control system). On November 1, 2011, Chrysler submitted a defect notice indicating it will conduct a recall of all MY 2008-2012 RHD Wrangler vehicles (11V528).The estimated 5,334 RHD Wrangler vehicles include the 2,297 MY 2008 RHD Wrangler vehicles, which were the subject of this investigation, plus an additional 3,037 MY 2009-2012 RHD Wrangler vehicles that Chrysler determined potentially have a similar CS concern as the MY 2008 RHD vehicles.Chrysler intends to replace the existing CS with a yet-to-be-produced improved CS assembly, or an improved steering housing assembly that is less susceptible to dusty environments.Owner notice is scheduled to begin in November, 2011.Chrysler also informed ODI that it intends to initiate a consumer satisfaction campaign for MY2007 LHD Wrangler which will extend the CS warranty coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles.Accordingly the investigation is closed.
ODI found the rate of warranty claims related to fuel spit back on the subject vehicles is lower than other vehicles previously recalled to correct defects related to fuel spit back.Although the rate of complaints reported to the agency on the subject vehicles is higher than or similar to the rates experienced in previous investigations where safety recalls were conducted, ODI suspects that the NHTSA safety complaints submitted by subject vehicles owners may have been influenced by internet related publicity both before and during this investigation.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that no safety-related defect exists. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.See attached report for additional information. In addition, Chrysler is initiating a lifetime warranty program, at no cost to the consumer, to address the fuel spit back problem in approximately 135,000 model year 2007-2008 Jeep Wrangler vehicles built from March 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008.Chrysler will notify all affected vehicle owners of this action.Consumers should refer to the warranty and service bulletins and sample owner notification letter available in the investigative file. The vehicle build date can be found on the certification label located on the driver door or door jamb.
