Risk
If the driver unknowingly operates the vehicle without the ABS functioning, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
Remedy
PACCAR will notify owners, and dealers will update the NAMUX software within the cab control module, free of charge. PACCAR issued owners an interim notification on June 4, 2020. This could result in a fire.
Remedy
Caterpillar IS handling the owner notification and remedy for this campaign. please see caterpillar's defect report 11e-006. Caterpillar will replace the single piece combustion tube with a thick wall combustion tube which will not allow the heat to break through. this service will be performed free of charge. Due to a parts supply issue, owners will be notified by the end of april 2011 about the safety defect, and will then be notified again once the free remedy IS available, currently estimated to be around late july 2011. owners may contact caterpillar toll-free at 1-800-447-4986.

The discharge of engine oil onto exhaust components which are hot, such as when the engine IS under significant load, may cause a fire.
Remedy

If the double check valve becomes lodged, in the event of a primary reservoir failure, air pressure can leak past the lodged double check valve thereby depleting the secondary reservoir, causing reduced ability for modulating the service emergency brakes. in such an event, the operator should observe an air leak, indications of low air pressure via the primary and secondary air gauges, and audible and visual low air pressure warning alarms. a vehicle crash IS possible if these warnings are not heeded.
Remedy

On certain kenworth and peterbilt heavy duty trucks equipped with tas-85 trw steering gears, the inner surface of the outer sector shaft teeth of the steering gears may have an incorrect involute profile, which may lead to chipping and damage of the gearing system.

This type of damage may cause a "bind/stick" condition in the vehicle steering during a turn increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy

On certain trucks, the removable tow hitch ,when used to tow or lift a vehicle, can fail due to defective material in the tow hitch.

Risk
If the tow hitch assembly fails while a vehicle IS being towed or lifted, it may cause an accident that could result in personal injury or death.

On certain trucks built with cummins C15 or isx engines and equipped with horton engine fans, durability testing revealed micro cracks in the fan blades.

Risk
The possibility exists that these micro cracks could develop into larger cracks which could cause the fan to break apart while turning resulting in equipment damage or physical injury.
Remedy

Consumer states truck caught fire after accident *tgw the consumer stated a tanker truck suddenly stopped unexpectedly and the consumers husband hit the tankers bumper. Smoke and flames started pouring out from under the good of the tractor. The consumers husband grabbed the extinguisher, ran to the front of the trunk, but because of the smoke and flames, he was unable to open the hood. He discharged the fire extinguisher under the driver's side wheel well, but the entire tractor was soon engulfed in flames. The fire department extinguished the flames and the tractor was towed to an impound yard. the insurance investigators could not determine the cause of the fire, due to the amount of fire damage to the engine. *jb

Cummins isx engine shut down twelve times since aug (7 month period) on hwy often requiring a tow updated 4/26/10 *cn it was finally determined the wiring harness that supplied power to the ecm was not connected properly from the factory. over time, the connection became worse which caused the engine to shut down. SummaryOn July 13, 2010, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened an investigation on model year (MY) 2007-2009 Peterbilt tractors equipped with the (SPL170XL extended lube inter-axle driveline).ODI opened this investigation based on one Vehicle Owners Questionnaire (VOQ) and certain Peterbilt field reports.During the course of the investigation, ODI reviewed PACCAR's IR (October 22, 2010) response with associated data related to Warranty and complaint information, mined field data, interviewed customers and visited local dealers within the Washington Metropolitan area.PACCARconducted testing regarding torsional loading and identified various causative factors contributed to this safety defect finding.The Defect is a consequence of the bearing surfaces of the SPL170XL extended lube universal joint that attaches the inter-axle driveline to the drive axle becoming prematurely worn due to a breakdown of lubrication and/or excessive heat.Prematurely worn bearing surfaces may result in the u-joint becoming loose and/or binding.This condition may result in universal joint failure, allowing the inter-axle driveline to detach from the axle, which may cause the drive shaft to separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of personal injury or property damage hazard.ODI learned that the affected population of the alleged defect extended to peer models within PACCAR.In summary, the following vehicles are being recalled: MY 2007 and 2008 Kenworth trucks, models T600, T660, T2000, T800 and W900 and MY 2007/2008 Peterbilt trucks, models357, 378, 379, 385, 386, 387, 388, and 389 allequipped with extended lube inter-axle drivelines manufactured by Dana Corporation.The recall affects vehicles manufactured between February 2, 2006 and April 30, 2007.At this time PACCAR has not yet identified a fix for the inner-axle safety defect and is currently conducting testing with the intent to provide a solution to the failure.ODI will monitor the development of PACCARS testing and ensure a timely repair for the consumer.This investigation is closed.
