5 recalls name the 2000 Mercedes Benz S Class. Newest first.
On certain vehicles, corrosion may occur in the inner steel portions of the active body control's (abc) high pressure distribution hose due to extensive exposure to humidity causing deterioration of the hose.
This may result in abc hydraulic fluid leakage near the catalytic converter. leaking fluid may come in contact with hot engine components and lead to a possible fire.
Dealers will install new corrosion resistant abc high pressure distribution hose. the recall began on july 2, 2007. owners may contact mercedes-benz at 1-800-367-6372.
On certain vehicles, the instrument cluster IS experiencing electrical malfunctions. the instrument cluster contains gauges and indicators that must be illuminated whenever the vehicle IS in operation.
Due to inadequate illumination, the driver will be unable to read the gauges and indicators, such as the speedometer, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the instrument cluster modules. the recall will be conducted in phases. phase I was mailed out to approximately 7,500 owners on september 29, 2006. phase II and phase III IS scheduled for december 2006. owners may contact mercedes-benz at 1-800-367-6372.
On certain passenger vehicles, during the production process of the blower motor fuse holder, the size of the electric conductor of the holder may be below appropriate tolerances.
Consequently, the electric conductor of the blower motor fuse holder may dissipate more heat than the plastic fuse holder was designed to withstand, which could result in overheating of the holder and disabling of the blower motor and the ability to defrost or defog the windshiled in cold or hot and humid weather conditions. depending on the occurrence and weather situation, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash.
Dealers will install new blower motor fuse holders. the recall began during october 2004. owners should contact mercedes-benz at 1-800-367-6372.
On certain passenger vehicles, excessive static build-up in the trunk floor mats can cause a static discharge when individuals move or remove items from the trunk compartment.
This can damage the electrical system components located in the trunk, including the vehicle's battery.
Dealers will install a static insulation panel between the carpet and the vehicle battery which will provide an electrical grounding. owner notification began february 14, 2003. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact mercedes-benz at 1-800-367-6372.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. due to an internal defect in the circuitry of the blower motor regulator, the regulator may overheat.
This could cause surrounding plastic, insulation, and wiring to deform and possibly melt or burn.
Dealers will replace the blower motor regulator.

Instrument cluster on 2000 my mercedes benz S500 illumination failed. cannot see gauges nor odometer. an obvious safety hazard. both dealer and m-b USA deny coverage under their 10-year warranty extension for this specific issue. the car was placed in service in 12/99 and waited for 10 years and 6 months before failure. formerly known for durability and reliability over many years, the company IS now unwilling to stand behind their defective product. this IS a safety issue. why would there be any time limit on a known safety failure? *tr
The airmatic system on my mercedes benz S-500 has failed for a second time. the car-body dropped and IS resting on the tires, making it impossible to operate the vehicle. *Tr

As I was driving my 2001 mercedes benz S500. My airmatic suspension fail and my car front went down as I was driving on the freeway. My tires start rubbing into my wheel well and started smoking. The problem left the front end damage. I had the problem fix by a mercedes dealership. Six month later the problem arise again. I don't drive the car for fear that I might get into an accident. *Tr
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6) september 2009 air blower to heater and air conditioning quit working. mechanic replaced fuse. air blower worked for 2 days. returned november 2009 and was told air blower would need to be replaced. february 2010 automatic trunk locks quit working. now trunk lock only works with key, no longer automatic. march 2010 air blower replaced. worked one week, then began malfunctioning until it no longer works. march 2010 dash lights began to flicker, then entire dash went out. door locks no longer automatic, no indicators for speedometer, turn signals, temperature controls etc. mechanic checked and replaced fuse. no results. mechanic indicated that instrument cluster would need to be replaced. internet research resulted in identifying recall of instrument cluster for 2000 "s" series, but that my vin #[xxx] IS not included in the recall. internet research reveals that all these malfunctions are common among the 2000 "s" series along with the instrument cluster malfunction and does appear to be closely related to the instrument cluster issue. mechanic indicated that he has replaced hundreds of the instrument clusters for specifically the "s" series, primarily year 2000 and has seen many of the issues with my S430 correlating to the instrument cluster malfunction. *Tr
Instrument cluster went dark while driving my 2000 mercedes S500
I'm probably not the first complain about this subject, as a simple search on www.google.com would reveal that this problem IS nation wide. I own a 2000 s-class mercedes-benz (W220 chasis), and I too got some aromatic (air suspention) problem. while I was driving on a side street, my vehicle displayed a warning sign saying "aromatic stop vehicle too low". I began to pull over toward the side of the street by slightly turning the wheel to the right, when I noticed that the car was shaking from the friction of the wheel rubbing against the bumper (or fender). I did not notice any visible damage to my vehicle other that the car was sitting so low that a good five inches from the top of the tire was inside the fender. It was then that I realized where the noise and vibration came from. The speed that I was traveling when this happened was 20mph. I can not imagine what would happen if the travel speed would be over 55mph (a very common speed for freeway driving in the city), what about over 70mph in rural areas. something needs to be done about this before somebody gets hurt (hopefully not already). If a moving part comes to contact with a non moving on at high speeds, the consequence could be lethal. according to my reaserch, all the W220 chasis mercedes-benz have this "aromatic suspension" problem, all the mechanics also agree with that statement. Please investigate for a possibility for a recall before it's to late. Thank you. *Cw
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 mercedes benz S430. the contact stated that the dashboard became so hot that it was difficult to touch. the following day, the blower motor in the vehicle stopped working when the driver attempted to activate the air conditioner. the manufacturer stated that the previous owner had the vehicle repaired according to nhtsa campaign ID number 00v141000 (equipment:electrical:air conditioner) in february of 2005; therefore, they were not responsible for the repair. the contact believes that the recall should still be valid because the failure has recurred. the current and failure mileages were 112,000. the consumer believed the repair was done incorrectly or done with faulty parts. On february 7 my wife was driving our 2000 S430 mb sedan and hit a curb on the drivers side. All the side airbags deployed. The damaged estimated was over $6000.00. My repair shop, mastercrafters inc. At 7406-08 westmore rd. In rockville, md noted that there was no other damages to the car. There was no suspension, frame or front end damage. Mr. Ken moran , the owner said that for the airbag to deploy without any other damage was extremely unusual and felt that this was an instance of a probable defective sensor or other airbag component failure. I am notifying mercedes benz of this occurrence, since I feel that this airbag deployment was a very dangerous situation and could have resulted in a serious accident. This event will surely cause my insurance rates to go up as well. A copy of this complaint will be sent to ussa, my insurer, and to mercedes benz of north america. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 mercedes benz S500. the contact stated that the vehicle would ride very low on a constant basis. the air suspension indicator was illuminated on the instrument panel. he noticed that the indicator would illuminate and remain lit immediately after the vehicle was started. the vehicle would lift up and the contact noticed a leak in the air suspension system, which caused the vehicle to decrease in height. the dealer and manufacturer stated that there were no recalls for the issue and offered no assistance. the current mileage was approximately 60,000 and failure mileage was approximately 56,000.
A simple traffic accident which led to air bag exploded, and injuring my daughter in the right eye, and loss of vision, because the driver's side air bag has sharp edges with the stitch on the surface of this to beat touching the passenger and his face. *Tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The subject s-class vehicles contain a compressed air suspension system that uses air struts on each of the four wheels in lieu of traditional springs and shock absorbers.these air struts use compressed air to support the weight of the vehicle and control ride height.in the event of the loss of air from the system, an alert will flash on the instrument cluster warning the driver to either drive carefully or to stop the vehicle.the vehicle ride height can be reduced by as much as 105 mm below normal ride height before the full load of the vehicle for that wheel comes to rest on a steel rod, with a rubber stop on the end, located in the shock absorber.this rest-stop condition IS designed such that there IS no impact on vehicle control.mercedes-benz (mbusa) supplied video showing a vehicle in this condition operating under several different situations including evasive maneuvers demonstrating the ability of the vehicle to be controlled effectively with a ride height reduced to the minimum.only those complaints to odi and mbusa that alleged a steering interference during a reduced ride height condition were counted in this resume failure report.some complaints alleged that with a reduced ride height and a stop now warning message there was a rubbing noise when turning, but the ability to steer the vehicle was not compromised.a sampling of warranty claims submitted by mbusa did not reveal any indicating a loss of control due to an airmatic system failure.there was one crash reported by mbusa to odi but the information available indicated that it related to suspension systems and it was not possible to verify that the incident was related to an airmatic system failure. Further use of agency resources in this matter does not appear to be warranted.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and will take further action in the future if warranted.this preliminary evaluation IS closed.
The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this investigation based on seven reports indicating that the instrument clusters in model year (my) 2000-2001 mercedes-benz s class vehicles failed in that consumers were unable to read any of the gauges while operating their vehicles at any speed during the day or night.in its 573 report to nhtsa dated february 1, 2006, mercedes-benz USA, llc (mercedes-benz)states that there are three instrument cluster failure modes that would result in undesirable operation.these three failure modes are specific to certain dates of production (see below) for the subject vehicle, and mercedes-benz IS recalling those vehicles within those dates.specific information regarding the failure modes IS described in mercedes-benz's report (see nhtsa recall 06v028).three of the odi complaints submitted to mercedes-benz involve vehicles that were produced before the dates of production of vehicles affected by the three failure modes.based on review of those three complaints, mercedes-benz was unable to identify a relation of those three to the defects identified in the recalled vehicles.all of the mercedes-benz complaints with vins identified were within the recall population (only 2 vehicle vins were not available to positively identify vehicle build date).the recall population will include 36,911 s class and cl class mercedes-benz vehicles built in the production dates ranging from june 2000 through november 2000, january 2002 through april 2002, and may 2004 through september 2004.these dates of production cover vehicles from the 2000-2002 my and the 2004-2005 my.to correct the condition, mercedes-benz will replace all affected instrument clusters with improved ones that are not subject to the failure modes.mercedes-benz will begin owner notification during the 1ST quarter of 2006.
The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this preliminary evaluation to investigate allegations of engine crankshaft pulley harmonic balancer failure that could result in loss of power-steering assist.odi has received a total of 546 non-duplicative reports that allege engine crankshaft pulley harmonic balancer failure on all mercedes-benz vehicles using the subject component.the subject component failures are progressive in nature and only a small percentage of the complaints and warrant claims involved a failure that had progressed far enough to effect power steering performance (6 of 55 odi complaints reference increased steering effort).there have been no crashes or injuries related to the alleged defect.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation IS closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see summary report attached for further detail.
