Safety record from NHTSA: recalls, owner complaints, investigations and service bulletins.
These records cover every 1999 Volvo S70. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
4 recalls name the 1999 Volvo S70. Newest first.
On certain passenger vehicles, a combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing, and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light and the subsequent onset of limp home modes.
This resulted in a high number of vehicles going into the limp home mode without need.
Dealers will install the current software upgrade onto the involved vehicles. the recall began on december 29, 2006. owners may contact volvo at 1-800-458-1552.
On certain passenger and sport utility vehicles, over an extended period of time, the headlight switch may cease to function.
The head lights may not operate properly which could result in intermittent or no headlight function. this could impair a driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
On vehicles with an original oem switch, dealers will replace the headlight switch. all other vehicles will be inspected to determine if the switch has een damaged and replace only if necessary. the recall began on january 24, 2005. owners should contact volvo at 1-800-458-1552.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. there could be inadequate contact between the bulb and socket which could cause the front turn signal not to function as designed.
This would fail to warn an approaching driver that the vehicle IS turning and could lead to a crash.
Dealers will replace the left and right front turn signal bulb and socket.
Vehicle description: all-wheel-drive sedans. these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of fmvss no. 301, "fuel system integrity." the fuel filter bracket configuration margins are insufficient.
In the event of a vehicle crash, fuel leakage could occur. fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Dealers will install a fuel filter protection bracket.
While driving speed needle goes back to zero as if you are not movin, show no mileage numbers n miles you have gone or zero trip miles, many lighton breaks, ABS ect.all while drivingif stop when time to go car thinks it IS in park all this IS while in traffichave pic can not down load be glad to send
Vehicle was involved in a 45mph collision on 9/12/2017. Front driver's side was impacted. The collision was severe enough to cause the front passenger airbag to blow. However, the front driver's side airbag did not blow up, despite the impact happening on the front driver side. A complaint was submitted to volvo on 9/19/2017. a call from (201) 768-7300 was received today 9/20. I forgot to note down her name but she was a volvo representative. She correctly stated that there was no occupant weight sensor in the passenger side and therefore they cannot discriminate when a crash IS severe. However, she stated that because I had my seat belt on, the system detected that I was safe and therefore did not blow up the driver airbag. This explanation seemed very bizarre to me as I believe if the crash was severe enough to blow up the passenger airbag, the driver airbag should blow up too, especially since the impact was on the driver side. I was repeatedly told that the system was complicated and therefore would not understand. I found this explanation to be unacceptable.

I have a vovlo 1999 S70 turbo I haven't had no major problems out of it..just normal maintenance until late dec I got in my car started it up it started with now problem back out of my driveway pulled up into ongoing traffic I had drove this car all week no signs of any problem was coming no lights flashing in the car panel so just know that you have to becareful because you can be on the highway and it will not give you no signs as it didn't me luckily I wasn't going as fast as someone on a highway but as soon as I thought I was going to go with the flow of the traffic I am getting up to about 35 out of no where I can not push on the gas pedal to get speed it was the other way around the more I push on pedal the more it would slow down and idle I was close to another drive way so I just let my car coast in the drive way I couldn't even put on my break cause my car had died so everything kinda locked up so I put it in neutral and let it coast into a park and space . Once I got to a stop I look down and my ets light was on well I just thought maybe it was on because I was low of gas. So I wait later to get gas and that was not the case I put gas in the car and try to start it it started for a quick second I heard it going to die so I quickly put my foot on the gas and it died all together . So please becareful there are no warring signs at all I had no problem earlier that day so if possible try to go in and make sure that you don't have an defect in you ets or etm it could save a life or many life. And keep the roads safe I feel vovlo since they know of these defects should send out letters to owners of the yr that they had many complaints to do a recall in the first place to those that could be affected it was a manufacture recall in my car however I guess since my car was the yr and model and make but it was an turbo they felt no need to be safe and expand the recall. *js
The first time it happen I was pulling out of my drive way. I came to a stop right outside my driveway waiting for it to be safe for me to pull out in on going traffic I push the gas pedal it gave me enough force to pull out on the street as soon as I try to give it more pick up but kinda idle got up to about 40 I would say bout soon as I hit forty it out of no where it wouldn't let me pick up or press on gas pedal when I would it would slow down so I try to push harder that IS when the car died so I quickly pulled up on the side of the road because everything was locking up gas it would not let me accelerate my check engine let flash on and put my flash lights on and sat for a minute trying to figure out what was going on. I waiting a few seconds started the car it first let me accelerate enough to coast but in the drive way. My ets light flashes on but doesn't say on. So I thought maybe cause I was low on gas that could a have been the problem I have drove the car all week not a problem at all. So later that night I figure since the street wouldn't be busy I would drive up put some gas in there to see if that was the problem. Got in the car started right up went to the gasstation which IS about 5mins from here pulled up in front of the pump turned off car it was a prepaid pump went inside gave them $8 came back out pump the gas got back into the car went to start it nothing so I wanted I tried again got it started soon as I went to push on the gas pedal it died then I turn the key back and try to start it again my ets light stays on this time but ce light flashes goes off some guy tries to give me a jump I push down on the gas it dies. When it died it kinda of sound everything was about to blow up it made a weird sound like a computer as you shut it down. .Took it to a car repair 3mths he had it then after trying all the codes -throttle body IS what he said the problem. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1999 volvo S70. The contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the throttle body had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. updated 06/10/14 ma
TL* the contact owns a 1999 volvo S-70. While refueling the vehicle the contact noticed a strong, overpowering gasoline fuel odor. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic advised the contact that there was a fuel leak at the top of fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
Twice, within 50 metres of the same spot each time, my car has suffered extreme acceleration whilst I was braking as hard as I could. first time, my mechanic checked all computer diagnostics using two different computer testing devices but there were no fault codes. now, as well as happening twice within 50 metres of the same spot, I was at the same set of traffic lights, which I do not suspect as being the problem, but also next to a major hospital with an adjacent helipad. my best guess after 57 years in electronics and 40+ in computers IS that some sort of rf interference IS upsetting my vehicle. I know volvo check all accidents involving their cars in sweden and wonder whether they have ever come across my problem. both times the engine screamed its head off although I had no time to worry about the tachometer reading. The noise itself was adequate warning and the lack of braking meant that I had to kill the ignition to recover mine and the vehicles composure. Switching on the ignition again both times, the vehicle once again idled normally and operated as it should. *tr
Bought the car about one week prior to the first stalling episode and ets light on. Called volvo due to a replacement/extended warranty on affected part. Was told that the part was not replaced and the warranty was no longer covering car (10 years/200000 miles). As a recent purchaser of this car I had no clue of the replacement not previously done or even needed. All was new to me and they refused. Moving forward one year and car stalled in traffic, almost hit from behind, no dash lights and complete failure of etm. Car won't stay running at all, terrified to drive the car home after this incident. No warranty on part, no replacement and now I have $ 4000 boat anchor that will cost a fortune to fix due to no warranty on the part that should have been replaced years ago by volvo. *jb

I had not driven this car for about a year because I bought a 2008 C70 that I was driving. I decided to start driving this one for the winter. On a rainy morning on my way to work, my windows frosted up inside so bad that I didn't think I was going to make it to work. my defroster failed. I just tried my car again and the defroster seemed to work - only slower- but now my dashboard IS showing me a light that says etc. from reading on-line, it sounds like I should have received a recall letter about this.. Needless to say, I did not. IS volvo going to take care of this matter - since I never received a recall letter or knew that there was such a problem? *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1999 volvo S70. the contact stated that the vehicle would not accelerate over 20 mph. the dealer had not been notified but the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who advised the contact that the electronic throttle system suffered an internal failure and needed to be replaced. no repairs were performed. the current mileage was 170,412 and the approximate failure mileage was 170,350. updated 10/28/11*lj upated 11/02/11
The emt light came on and there was no power to the accelerator. this was quite frightening and then the power returned and the car sped up and then there was again a loss of power in the accelerator. I pulled over and had the car towed in to the shop but I believe there has been a problem with this happening to 1999-2000 volvos. my car was always serviced by the dealer and nothing was ever said about the possibility of this problem occuring.
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 volvo S70. The contact stated the vehicle would intermittently stall while driving at various speeds. Upon restart the vehicle would operate as normal. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on numerous occasions; however, they were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to various authorized dealers approximately sixteen times for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 90,263.
This complaint IS against volvo america, I own a 1999 volvo S70 with 214,000 miles. Volvo claims that it had a software upgrade for my electronic throttle control module. Volvo had a recall for this item, but it only covered this recall upto 200,000 miles. My volvo never had the part replaced, volvo only did a "software upgrade." the etc IS failing and may fail on the freeway, placing my life and the life of other american drivers in danger. Why has volvo got away with failing electronics which will turn the car off on the freeway and will take people's lives. Do something about this. *Tr
1999 volvo S70. Mechanical problems started in 2005.the vehicle would suddenly stall with no warning, usually in rush hour traffic. The consumer was able to restart the vehicle, but often it would go no more than 20-30 mph. Also, some of the lights on the dash would come on and go off. The consumer has taken the vehicle to the dealer at least sixteen times.they say they can't duplicate the problem, so they can't fix it. meantime, my car comes to a dead stop on houston streets and freeways with 18-wheelers, trucks, and cars behind it. this a rolling coffin. I am going to get rear-ended and someone IS going to be killed. maybe several "someone's". volvo of houston doesn't care. we bought the car there. it has had maintenance service there over the years. these people took our $27,000 and gave us a "killer" car. I am terrified when I have to drive it. since 2005, every time I get in this car I wonder if I will get home alive. I would like for someone at volvo to take this car and let their wife, mother, or daughter drive it. let them worry about getting killed on a houston street. this car has done this at least 20 times, maybe more. I never know if I will get where I am going out and I definitely don't know if I will get home a l I v e! this car IS going to get someone killed. this car IS going to get someone killed. did I mention that this car IS gong to get someone killed?? I would like to give this car to a president or vice-president at volvo so they could let their loved ones drive and worry a bout "someone getting killed". I have dealt with volvo since 2005. they don't care. making money by selling cars IS all that IS important to them. even if the driver gets killed because they don't know how to fix the problem that IS going to cause the death. I asked the [xxx], at volvo of houston today if he would like to let his wife, mother, or daughter drive this car. he just looked at me and said nothing. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c.
Vehicle surges after I had the software download recall. They keep telling me it IS a dirty throttle body, but it has been cleaned a thousand times. They never replaced my tcm. Just the software. This needs to stop. I feel unsafe in this car. Need a recall. *tr
Power door locks, when you lock the door, you can still open it from the outside. Somebody can come right up to your door while you are driving or parked, and open the door even when it IS locked. 3 of my 4 doors do this. I have to keep replacing them at $140.00 a piece. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1999 volvo S70. For a number of months the contact complained to an independent repair shop about the strong smell of gas accumulating overnight in the garage after filling the gas tank to full. The contact was advised it was either the gas cap or the fuel tank. The gas cap was replaced, but there was still no improvement. the contact returned to the repair shop where the problem was identified as failed seals on the metal fuel lines entering and exiting the lid of the fuel pump installed on top of the fuel tank under the trunk. The adhesive or sealant that secured the metal in the line and metal out line to the filters plastic lid had cracked and gas vapors and gasoline leaked out of the cracks. The fuel pump was replaced. the failure and current mileages were 170,750. updated 03/15/11 *bf
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On november 14, 2006 volvo submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning etm failures in model year (my) 1999 through 2001 volvo models (not including the S40 and V40), my 2002 S60 and V70 with naturally aspirated engines and my 2002 v70s.according to volvo, ?a combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light and the subsequent onset of limp home modes.volvo further stated that, this resulted in a high number of these vehicles going into limp home mode without need.?volvo indicated that this was the most severe consequence of an etm fault in the subject vehicles.the recall remedy IS a software upgrade introduced by volvo on march 16, 2006 in a customer satisfaction program.at the time of the notification 161,202 vehicles of the population of 331,301 had already had the software uploaded and were therefore not included in the population count of the recall. Odi?s analysis of complaints to odi and volvo, volvo field reports and warranty data found that etm failure could result in (1) engine stall; (2) mechanical limp mode; (3) lunging forward during low-speed driving maneuvers; and (4) faltering during high speed merges or when crossing traffic.odi identified 12 crashes related to etm failure, with 6 caused by lunging incidents, 3 caused by stalling incidents, 2 caused by mechanical limp mode and 1 from the faltering condition.odi's analysis of complaint data and information obtained from consumer interviews identified 1,289 incidents with safety related consequences (389.1 per 100,000 vehicles), including 479 involving engine stall (144.6 per 100,000 vehicles) and 729 involving mechanical limp mode (220.0 per 100,000 vehicles).odi's analysis of warranty claim narrative text shows at least 14,965 warranty claims with codes indicating an etm fault resulting in vehicle operation in mechanical limp mode (4.5% of the subject vehicles). Volvo?s recall addresses odi?s safety concerns with etm failures.odi will continue to monitor the subject vehicles to determine if additional action IS required.this engineering analysis IS closed.
Pe05-041 was opened on july, 26, 2005, based on 136 consumer complaints to odi alleging throttle control malfunctions in the subject vehicles.odi has now received 591 complaints of etm failures which allege symptoms with potential safety related consequences.these include allegations of engine stall, vehicle surging forward without accelerator input, vehicle hesitation upon acceleration and sudden and unexpected transition into reduced performance operation (limp mode).volvo submitted over 2,900 complaints concerning the etm in the subject vehicles during pe05-041.odi's preliminary analysis of a sample the volvo complaints identified approximately 55 percent with one or more of the symptoms described above.odi IS continuing its assessment of the information contained in the volvo complaints. In november 2005, to resolve an investigation by the california air resources board, volvo announced that it would extend the warranty coverage to 10 years / 200,000 miles for the etm in approximately 356,000 model year 1999 through 2002 passenger cars sold in the united states and canada.under volvo's policy, vehicles that experience etm failures will receive a variety of repairs including etm cleaning, reprogramming the engine control module and/or replacement of the etm. This investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-021) to continue to assess the safety consequences of etm failures in the subject vehicles.
On august 23, 1999, volvo notified nhtsa that it would conduct a safety recall (99v235) on certain 1997 model year (my) 850 vehicles and certain 1998 s/v/c 70 series vehicles for failure of the headlight switch.the defect report stated in part: operation of the headlight switch, over an extended period of time, can result in inconsistent operation of the switch.volvo's remedy for this recall was to replace the headlight switch.this recall query investigation was opened on june 8, 2004, based on 13 reports of headlight failure on 1998 and 1999 s/v/c 70 series vehicles that were not included in the earlier recall.by letter of october 18, 2004, volvo has notified the agency that it will now conduct a safety recall of an additional 97,000 my 1998 through 2000 s70/v70/v70xc and C70 vehicles built from june 5, 1997 through january 11, 2000. Volvo dealers will replace the original equipment master light switch with one of an improved design. See safety recall 04v504 for details.
