The fuel pump flange on this 2008 BMW k1200gt IS leaking onto the engine below. This IS a known problem with this model as seen in this link: https://www.asphaltandrubber.com/recall/bmw-fuel-flange-leak-recall-2020/ and also at the link below which shows nhtsa's letter about this problem https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2020/rcak-20v471-2669.pdf on my motorcycle gas IS leaking out from the same fuel pump flange and leaking down onto the engine.. This IS a fire hazard as noted in nhtsa's report. I have included a youtube video link below that shows how and where the gas IS leaking out from my gas tank. This occurs if the bike IS stationary or in motion. see below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwusmvrbn8m I am asking that my BMW motorcycle be included in this recall as it has the same problem as the other 2008 k1200gt bikes that were covered. I am not sure why my bike would not also be in that recall.
Fuel level sensor failure. Ran out of fuel while driving at highway speeds on interstate 90 westbound near mitchell, sd. Fuel gauge showed 1/8 tank of fuel. No warning issued by motorcycle to rider. Bike just suddenly slowed in traffic. This IS 3RD time for this failure.
Fuel level sensor failure. Ran out of fuel while driving at highway speeds on interstate 90 eastbound in ny milepost 460.5. Fuel gauge showed 1/4 tank of fuel. No warning issued by motorcycle to rider. Bike just suddenly slowed in traffic. This IS 4TH time for this failure (had it repaired by BMW on aug 5, 2015)
ABS failed with no warnings, total loss of braking power. I beleive this was a significant failiure. happend on my brothers bike as well 2 months later. less then 30K miles and just past 3 years... Happened during ride on freeway on first use of brake. I had to pay to replace. BMW claimed it IS not significant and not a problem.
7/19/11 single vehicle accident, 5-10 mph, when gas cap came open and fuel dumped all over victim and motorcycle. Rider 2ND and 3RD degree burns over 40% of his body, ultimately resulted in amputation of both legs. previous to the accident, driver took the motorcycle to dealership multiple times to report gas cap would come open while driving bike down the road. dealership never fixed gas cap.
First indication of the final drive failing was a clunking sound from the rear when running over expansion joints at highway speed ,5/25/12 @ 15,784 miles. There was no external oil leak. The dealer made repair at my expense. Second failure on day trip 9/24/15 @ 26,687 noticed clunking riding on rough pavement coming from rear of bike, speed approximately 45mph. Again no oil leak and wheel rim again wobbles at 9 and 3 o'clock and 6 and 12 o'clock. Taking to dealer 9/25/15 and see what they have to say about second failure!
ABS pump failure.
Rear drive bearings and wheel side seal failed gear lube on rear brake pads and rear brakes quit working. tire tread contaminated with lube making greatly reduced traction. nearly lost control of vehicle on stopping due to change in the vehicle dynamics and loss of rear wheel traction as the failure did not cause any indication that this had happened until stopping. the rear drive was serviced by the dealer within the last 4 months march 2015 at 11,400 miles or so. I have never had a failure on such a major safety related component such as this on any vehicle I have owned at such a relatively low total vehicle mileage level.
On my way home after a 250 mile ride, about 5 miles from home when I would ride over a road seam the bike would hesitate. When I arrived home I put the bike on center stand and shook rear wheel at from the 3 to 9 o'clock positions, there was at least 3/8" of an inch play side to side and 6AND 12 o'clock. There was no external oil leaking from final drive. I called the dealer to schedule service.brought bike in 5/25/12 was told the bearing failed in final drive. Cost of repair $888.58, had final drive repaired and picked up 5/31/12. This was an expense that they did not cover! *tr
The ABS brake warning light came on. I took the motorcycle to my authorized BMW dealer in long beach, ca. They said that the ABS brake module had failed; however they refused to repair or replace the faulty unit. I sent it out to an independent repair facility and they repaired the unit at my cost. I then had the unit reinstalled by my BMW dealer at my cost. *tr
My 2008 BMW k1200gt I have owned since new and with only 21,000 miles on the odometer had its ABS pump fail. when told about the issue the dealer attempted to clear the trouble codes and the brake fail light came back on. when this happens my bike has no ABS which IS a huge deal on 2 wheels. just this past weekend I had a deer run out in front of me on a road in upstate new york doing 55 mph. the wheels locked up and I had to regain traction while trying to avoid the deer. BMW wants $2000.00 just for the pump and that doesn't even include swapping them out! this IS absurd with a bike with only 21, 000 miles and there are story's of a lot of other k1200gt's with this ridiculous problem! *tr
The final drive failed causing oil to be thrown on the rear tire without warning nearly causing a crash. I am a long time motorcycle rider and BMW owner. I inspected my motorcycle before my ride that morning. I left on a one hundred mile ride. about 70 miles into the ride in a left hand corner the rear tire slid without warning. I was able to keep the bike upright. I stopped and inspected the machine. I found that the final drive (differential) was leaking oil heavily. this oil has spread to the rear tire surface. the issue here IS that BMW knows about this problem and has not recalled the motorcycle. they of course refuse to do anything financially about this known issue. the main issue with me IS that I would never put my wife on the back of it again. if she had been riding with me I would have certainly crashed. I am a member of bmwmoa, I have read complaint after complaint about BMW final drive failures. it IS a safety issue. I hope that you will look into this. I would sue the factory but I am sure no attorney would represent me because I wasn't hurt. I wonder how many BMW riders have been killed because this failure was overlooked or not noticed as a cause of loss of control. the repair will cost around one thousand dollars. but again the money isn't the issue with me. my complaint IS that the vehicle IS defective. the design causes oil to be thrown on the rear tire. this could be a fatal error. I have to believe people have been killed by this failure. feel free to contact me if you would like any more information. updated 5/7/2015 *js
TL* the contact owns a 2008 BMW k1200 GT motorcylce. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the brake light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that while attempting to merge to the side of road, the brakes were engaged and the rear wheel seized. The dealer was contacted who stated that there was probability that the ABS modulator was defective and advised the contact to call the manfacturer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 19,935. Updated 09/16/14*lj the consumer stated the manufacturer was notified and declined assistance. updated 1/15/15 *js
During annual inspection dealer advised there was excessive play in rear wheel, requiring replacement of final drive bearings. upon attempted removal and replacement of the crown bearings dealer determined that the axle IS worn enough that the bearings fall off the axle. dealer advises the bearings should be a press fit. dealer advises replacement of final drive assembly IS required with cost of $2269. bike has all required BMW service maintenance. *tr
While riding on twisty road, motorcycle lost power, causing bike to fall into sharp turn, nearly resulting in potentially dangerous situation. this incident was due to lack of fuel resulting from faulty fuel gauge. the fuel gauge was working fine prior to incident so no history of malfunctioning fuel system. there IS a known problem with these fuel sensors, see service bulletin no.: sib-16-02-09. *tr
The ABS pump failed on my motorcycle with only 21,330 miles on it. I still have braking ability but do not have ABS braking safety. there IS no reason for an ABS pump to fail on a bike that sees less than 5,000 miles annually. *tr
Driving on freeway, when had car pull in front of me. He did not see me. Using brakes had almost no breaking power, and locking rear wheel. ABS had failed. after researching found that this IS a very common problem with BMW. Bikes loose ABS all the time, but ABS IS not considered a safety option. on a motorcycle ABS can be the difference between life and death. *tr
ABS module triggered a "fault" . ABS immediately stopped working. ultimately, I had the unit repaired by a private company. the cause of the failure was due to stuck electrical motor brushes that activate the valve assembly. *tr
ABS system failed due to defective pump. (BMW pn 34517715109). *tr
My BMW motorcycle has, according to the dealer (cross country bmwin metuchen nj) , sustained a failure requiring replacement of the final drive, an $1800 part. The bike has been maintained by an authorized BMW dealer according to the factory schedule and has not been ridden off-road or in an aggressive manner. 37,500 miles seems like a very premature mileage reading for the bike to sustain this type of failure. The bike has not leaked any fluids from the drive. This failure us of the same type described in odi no. 10439549, and currently being investigated under campaign dp12001. *tr
My bike placed in service for routine recall as suggested by BMW america. The recall will be initiated on the 8TH 2012. as indicated by recall, brake lines were replaced & suspension part was replaced as well. august 8TH 2012 on august 9TH 2012 I rode bike to work 12 miles, after stopping for gas and continuing to head home; while driving on the highway at a speed of 62 mph a brake failure red light appeared on the dash. I called BMW spoke with [xxx] of issue since brake repairs were just done on bike day before. [Xxx] stated that he didn't know why this happened. He also stated how do we know you didn't do it?? I returned to the dealership and spoke to the manager, [xxx]?.. He stated that he believed my brake ABS pump was failing as indicated in the diagnosis. I questioned: how did this happen? How can you expect me to assume repairs since you just repaired recalls on brake issues yesterday? [Xxx] stated that these things happen. 8,000 miles without a scratch was back in service after a repair recall and none of any these issues were caused by they just worked on my brakes the day before. After spending over 30 minutes with bob and manager they felt that they would at least contact BMW and get them to pay for the repairs. [Xxx] stated the repairs were about $ 2200.00. I learned august 17, 2012 that BMW would not stand behind the proper repairs of my bike . After further research I also learned that this IS a known safety issue for BMW k bikes and the recall was issued to correct this problem. I now have a motorcycle that IS unsafe to ride do to "brake failures" and BMW service as well as their manufacturer are willing to make good on the repairs. I am requesting that BMW of the dealership bob's BMW correct the issue on the bike as prior to their recall or repairs. BMW motorcycles 2008 k1200gt and 2000 r110rt. Consumer writes in regards to power train final drive failure. *Tgw the consumer stated gear oil leaked onto the rear tire. *Jb
Rear brake seized and would not release. situation: rolling up to a stoplight, I applied both front and rear brakes. as the vehicle approached very low speeds, I released the brakes and engaged the clutch to creep forward, closer to stopped traffic. at that point the vehicle stopped abruptly (not typical). when I tried to engage first gear to ride forward, the rear brake was still seized, even though my foot was on the ground and not touching the brake pedal. there was squealing noise from the rear brakes. after struggling to get underway, I applied the brake pedal a few times, and it finally seemed to release after riding for a short distance (less than 1 mile). *js
Cracks developed in the plastic fuel pump assembly on my motorcycle. I started smelling raw fuel in my garage. I pulled the panel and then the tank seeking the source of the fuel smell and found raw fuel was spraying in a mist through cracks that formed in the base of the fuel pump assembly. Specifically, the cracks formed where the female side of the quick disconnect screws into the pump assembly. a fine fuel mist IS present when the key IS turned on and the fuel lines are pressurized. in my view, this IS a dangerous condition, given that the assembly sits directly over the hot engine. *tr
The bike as developed a low speed low rpm hesitation and stalling, it IS a real danger when it suddenly clears and the bike will accelerate hard, making rear wheel traction a concern. The bike runs well and higher rpm and speeds with good ,normal fuel consumption around 40 mpg, in town low speed stumbling mpg IS from a low of 27 to 32 mpg. The local dealer has the bike for the 4TH week and seem to think all IS well, " they all seem to do it ". Was one statement made on the phone. I feel they are waiting for the warranty to expire and suddenly have a fix. *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
ODI began investigating this issue after owners of model year (MY) 2004-2011 R-series BMW motorcycles reported incidents of pressurized fuel leakage from the fuel pump flange. Some owners first became aware of the problem when their pant leg was fuel-soaked.Prior to opening our initial investigation on November 16, 2012, BMW had concluded that the small number of warranty claims and owner reports did not indicate the existence of a safety defect trend. However, during the course of responding to our information requests, BMW re-examined its data and decided to conduct a recall (13V-617) of the subject motorcycles. In conducting recall 13V-617, BMW voluntarily expanded the scope of affected vehicles from ODI'soriginal scope, MY2005-2008 R-series motorcycles, to include the primary and auxiliary fuel pumps on all MY 2005-2011 R-series, MY 2005-2011 K12&13 models, MY 2010-2011 RR models, and the MY 2012 K1600 motorcycles. The total number of motorcycles subject to this recalled is 50,184.The 55 reports cited in this investigation can be viewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following complaint identification numbers:10485789,10449393,10521322,10475150,10435325,10493015,10471642, 10448216,10488899,10356156,10433733,10442023,10492342,10435968, 10492961,10504324,10485882,10433013,10453738,10474390,10417320, 10485276,10444876,10508150,10485807,10492118,10491835,10425962, 10430734,10488652,10485274,10493320,10522421,10399423,10443840, 10448325,10490417,10485452,10433589,10467136,10420291,10503806, 10532145,10523763,10523626,10425514,10354202,10437222,10444742, 10454834,10532172,10487624,10435984,10452476, 10485337
