On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position may corrode, weaken, and eventually fracture. if both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper.
Risk and remedy
Risk
Anyone sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured could be injured by falling from the tailgate. on vehicles that have had the bumper removed, the tailgate may drop even lower. additionally, if there IS cargo on the tailgate the cargo may fall off if the support cables fracture.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the cables. interim owner notification began on april 7, 20004. the recall began on september 24, 2004, when replacement parts were available, and will continue through october 29, 2004. owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463, or visit www.mygmlink.com, and enter your vehicle identification number.

I didnt think the truck would stop so I swerved to the right in order to miss the vehicle in front of me that had already stopped. Luckily my truck stopped, but it was rather scary. It has happened to my wife and daughter also. There was a recall issued for chevrolet and GMC vehicles in the " severe corrosion" areas, ohio being one of the states, which IS where I live. The recall # IS 05068a. I am curious why cadillac vehicles were not included in this recall even though the same issue IS happening and IS getting more and more frequent. Another vehicle ran stop sign, I had to step hard on brake pedal to avoid an accident. Shortly after I noticed the brake pedal getting closer to "bottoming out" each time I applied the brakes. Upon arriving home I found, on the left side undercarriage below the back seat, fluid dripping and approximately 24" of the frame and undercarriage saturated with brake fluid. When I crawled under the vehicle I traced the brake line from the master cylinder back and found the lines to be rusted. The line that IS leaking must have rusted thru. Unfortunately, due to design I cannot see the break in the line nor, it appears, can I repair it myself due to accessibility.

I began losing control of the vehicle because the noise was so loud, and starteling that I thought someone struck my drivers side. I am left side - hearing impaired, my whole left side went numb and began to ring piercingly. I gained control back of the vehicle and tried to exit the truck. I was engulfed in chemicals and couldn't see. I tried to open the door and couldn't as the airbag blocked my exit, and / or rolling down the window. when the airbag began to deflate I was able to exit the vehicle. I was fortunate my son and husband were behind me as we drove home. they had no idea what was happening as I jumped out of my truck with a white cloud of fumes behind me. I now feel as though my ear has been stabbed and my nose/throat are burning. *tr

The exhaust manifold bolts are broken and the muffler repair shop said this could lead to a major repair bill if the other bolts break taking the manifold off, it could lead to the egr pipe braking and this IS a substantial repair bill just replacing each exhaust manifold bolt as IS, then, the repair shop wants me to buy new exhaust manifolds so they can warranty their work. this should be a recall issue or new exhaust manifolds & gasket w/upgraded bolts. please help your loyal customer. *tr

The contact took the broken brake line to the dealer where the mechanic diagnosed that the brake line had deteriorated due to rust and the brake line system had to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 123,000.

The mechanic had to replace the brake calipers. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified who offered no assistance. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 130,000.

TL* the contact owns a 2002 cadillac escalade ext. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph in a parking lot when the brakes began to pulsate upon engaging. The brakes were applied repeatedly before the vehicle came to a stop. The failure recurred six different times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the passenger side ABS sensor, front and rear rotors, master cylinder and four brake calipers were replaced. Most recently, the entire brake line rusted and was also replaced which required the body of the vehicle to be disengaged from the frame to perform the repair. While driving my cadillac escalade with my family and braking at a low speed (less than 15 mph) the ABS system seemed to have gone off without the ABS light going on and subsequently this almost caused me to crash into the vehicle in front of me had I not pulled toward the curb. I went on the internet to research the issue and found that this IS quite a common issue with this car as many other owners have reported it. Subsequently thereafter the issue has been re-occurring and I brought it to my local cadillac dealer. I told the service center what my research found and because a computer scan did not even pick up the issue they decided t it might be due to the ABS sensors being dirty also the service center representative and mechanic both said to me that they have seen this issue a number of times. they cleaned off this ABS sensor at which time a test revealed that one of the sensors was reading improperly. so they said to repair it I need to change the entire wheel hub assembly on that side. after they changed that side and after another test drive the issue still recurred. this time they said maybe we need to change the other side as well. now they are in the process of changing the other wheel hub assembly to see if the issue IS corrected. the cost for repairs IS well over $1200. the car IS out of warranty but only has 36,000 miles on it and drives under normal conditions. I tried to contact gm's customer service who are of no help and also asked to have this issue reported for some type of review or potential recall. this IS a serious concern as it affects the braking system of their vehicle that does not seem due to wear or tear but an issue with manufacturing. the sensor itself cannot even be swapped out, only the entire assembly. this IS quite scary that at any time during the entire process my ABS light did not go off and it did not seem that the cadillac dealerships own computers could not properly diagnosis the issue. *tr

Recently, my vehicle was presented to firestone for state inspection. The vehicle involved in this complaint IS a 2002 cadillac escalade ext. following the inspection, I was informed the vehicle's parking brake would not hold the vehicle. I was further informed that this problem was prevelant in the cadillac escalade production line and similar series such as the cheverolet avalanche. the associate attributed the major safety issue to the manufacturer's neglect to adopt an effective retaining clip which results in premature wear of the parking brake shoes. this defect not only compromises the efficiency of the parking brake, but prematurely wears and significantly damages the rotors of the vehicle needed to engage the parking brake. due to this manufacturer defect, my vehicle failed inspection and IS pending over $500.00 in repairs to correct the safety issue. when the vehicle was presented to a brake shop, the technicians were unable to disassemble the rear driverside hub to access the parking brake shoes. a bolt which needed to be removed was lock-tite to the point of permanent and static fixture (with the only method of removal being the grind or cut the bolt out). because of these issues, I am unable to pass safety inspections in the state of texas. the parking brake was never engaged while driving and never engaged to create friction with the moving wheels. when the parking brake IS depressed, the lever motions with little resistance all the way to the floorboard.

I was fortunate this happened in my driveway and not out on the road. $347.00 later and it can happen again at any time. Before locksmith showed up cadillac wanted to disconnect transmission and drop drive shaft place on flatbed to transport to dealership. what would that have cost me? consumers should not be held hostage with this poor quality part. *Nm

Each time replacement has not remedied the problem. a manufacturer representative inspected the vehicle and determined no repairs are available at this time.

I was moving at a very low speed (less than 5 mph) and the vehicle failed to slow and continued off the road and into a culvert. struck a tree and there was an estimated $2,500 to 5,000 in damages (no injuries). road conditions: snow, but not slick photos were taken immediately following accident. immediately contacted cadillac certified dealer for service. dealer stated they were not able to replicate the conditions and/or situation. dealer suggested I contact gm directly to document my concerns. spoke with cheryl danbey and barbara green of the product allegation department. neither were concerned or helpful and stated there were no recalls specific to my concerns for my specific vehicle. *Jb

This IS a synopsis of the incidents with goodyear wrangler hp tires (p265/70r17) that have occurred with my 2002 cadillac escalade ext. The first incident occurred on december 27, 2003, myself along with my father, mother, sister and cousin ellison was traveling in a 2002 cadillac escalade ext. as we were traveling down interstate 16 from macon, georgia to savannah, georgia, there was a loud popping sound and the rear of the vehicle was thrown into the air. once the rear of the vehicle hit the ground, I was able to safely maneuver the vehicle off to the side of the road. when we exited the vehicle, we noticed that the thread had completely separated from the right rear tire. there was also substantial damage done to the rear of the vehicle. on november 18, 2004, while my father and mother were traveling on I-95 near brunswick, georgia, they felt a thud and immediately pulled over to the side of the road. when they exited the vehicle, they noticed that the right front tire thread had started to separate. on november 30, 2004, less than two weeks after the previous tire incident, my father and mother was traveling on interstate 16 near statesboro, georgia. at this point in time, the left rear tire blew out. again my father was able to safely maneuver the vehicle off to the side of the road. on february 18, 2005, while my father and mother were traveling in mississippi on interstate 10. while they were driving down interstate 10, the right rear tire blew completely out. on april 3, 2005, my father was driving the vehicle around town in savannah, georgia. he noticed that the vehicle started vigorously shaking. at this point, he stopped the vehicle and safely pulled over to the side of the road. when he looked at the tires, he noticed that the threads were separating from the tire. *jb

I am currently having a re-occuring problem with the stability track. I have had it serviced four times now to no avail. each time I take it in they tell me it IS a computer problem, and that it just need to be reset. I have yet to have an accident, but today I almost did. while going to the curb entering the freeway the steering went crazy and the service stability track notice appeared. after I entered the highway the vehicle still was jerking uncontrolable. I turned of the stability trac button in hopes of gaining control. the vehicle still noted the problem even after being turned off. I again have taken to the dealership in woodland who stated it had to be my 22" wheels. but, I find this highly unlikely since the dealership originally offered it to me upon buying and I had this problem three times before with the original 17' tires. I do maintain a record of all services and I have a copy of when I purchased the wheels, which was not until recently. this IS the second escalade from gm the first one was declared a lemon and this one appears to be turning out to be one also.

In a letter dated august 29, 2005, gm notified odi that it was recalling certain model year 1999 through 2002 c/k pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles to correct a problem with anti-lock brake system (ABS) wheel speed sensor corrosion that may result in unwanted ABS activation and extended stopping distances during low-speed braking (recall 05v-379).gm's recall covers approximately 804,000 vehicles currently registered in the following 14 salt-belt states:connecticut, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, and west virginia.the recall procedure will involve removing the sensor, cleaning the mounting surface, applying a rust inhibitor (zinc-x) to the surface, and reinstalling the sensor.if necessary, the sensor will be replaced. The population and failure report data given in this resume are for the full region that has been considered by odi as the salt-belt.that includes delaware, iowa, maryland, minnesota, missouri, wisconsin and the district of columbia in addition to the 14 states included in 05v-379.the states covered by gm's recall have the highest incident rates for the subject condition, accounting for 91% of the incidents, but only 24% of subject vehicle sales in the united states.odi's analysis determined that 840 of the complaints, 244 of the crashes, and 16 of the injuries identified in this investigation occurred in those states.the resulting incident and crash rates are 96.2 and 28.0 per 100,000 vehicles respectively (note:rates are based on vehicle sales, not registered vehicles). The corresponding numbers in the excluded portions of the salt-belt are 399,000 vehicles, 81 incidents (20.3 per 100,000 vehicles), 3 crashes, and no injuries.the statistics in the remaining 30 states are 2,406,000 vehicles, 168 incidents (7.0 per 100,000 vehicles), 31 crashes, and one injury.gm and odi are continuing to monitor the problem experience in states that are not included in the recall.gm will provide odi with updated complaint, field report, and warranty data in november 2005.odi and gm will review that data and assess the appropriateness of the current scope of the recall at that time.

The customer has 3 options while traveling through the United Sates. First if the vehicle is equipped with a navigation radio they can request a "Destination Download" to the vehicle. Second if the customer uses the OnStar RemoteLink app they can send the directions to the vehicle. The third option would be to have the vehicle loaded with a "500 phone number" The customer will no longer be able to use their Hands Free Calling minutes when the new 500 phone number is loaded. If a customer chooses to restore Hands Free Calling in the future a new phone number will be assigned to the vehicle; previous phone numbers are not available.

Technician will need to determine what type of call the customer is having that is unwanted. The vehicle may receive an incoming call just like any other phone. Typically the customer will hear the phone ringing in the vehicle. This scenario also includes incoming Bluetooth calls. One type of unwanted call can be made if the key pad is faulty the OnStar system will try to make a blue button call for shorted voltage in the circuits. The OnStar module could have an internal fault and produce a "Phone Unavailable" audio message also it may have a Diagnostic Trouble Code U1500 or B1000. Refer to diagnostics for the Diagnostic Trouble Code making sure to follow any applicable Bulletins or Preliminary Information sheets. A "Ready" or "OnStar ready" audio message heard while driving. In some cases it has been found that the customer is inadvertently pressing the ?push to talk? button on the steering wheel controls. On rare occasions, other issues in the steering column or Steering Wheel Control system may induce this concern.

General Motors will only support a tire calibration for tires that have been sized, tested and designed for the vehicle in question and its applications. Technician should not use the information that is provided by the antilock braking system tire size selection.

Technician should be advised that the maximum pinion shim to be used or stacked behind the pinion is 0.050?, and the minimum pinion shim is 0.020? for an 8.6 axle. The range for available pinion depth shims for the 10.5? axle is 0.006? to 0.024?. When setting the backlash it should be set between 0.003? to 0.005? on a new ring and pinion for any American Axle Manufacturing application. The ring and pinion can be reused or adjusted if the mileage is less than 500 miles, if not used for towing. Technician should be advised that a ?roller coaster? or ?hourglass? pattern on the bearings may be normal up to 10,000 miles and possibly longer. With a mis-machined housing you may get a heel pattern on both sides of the gear teeth at build up can generally be corrected with backlash adjustments. When setting up an 8.6? axle with a 5 cut gear set is to use a 0.035? pinion shim and set backlash to 0.004?. When using the newer 2 cut gear set also use a 0.035? pinion shim and still set backlash to 0.004?. To set the gear pattern use backlash to adjust the pattern heel to toe. Use the pinion shim to adjust the height of the pattern. The proper drive pinion bearing pre-load is from 15 - 30 inch pounds with new bearings. The total torque to turn after the differential case is installed should increase 5 - 10 inch pounds at the pinion. A new pinion nut must be used whenever the old one is removed. The axle shaft end play specification is 0.012? per side and the radial specification is 0.002? - 0.003?. Technician should be advised that synthetic lube can be used in all new American Axle Manufacturing axle assemblies. The new pinion seal for the 8.6? axle assembly is a two piece design.
