Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Can-Am Spyder GS, RS, and RT series vehicles. The fuel cap may not fit onto the fuel tank filler neck, preventing it from sealing properly.
Risk and remedy

If the fuel cap does not seal properly, it may leak fuel vapors. Fuel vapors in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire and personal injury.
Remedy
BRP will notify owners and send them a replacement fuel cap, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin in mid-January 2013. Owners may contact BRP AT 1-888-638-5397.
Bombardier recreational products inc. (Brp) IS recalling certain model year 2010 spyder rt roadsters. a pin securing the brake pedal connecting rod could disengage and fall off.
Risk and remedy
Risk
If this occurs, a total loss of main brake function could result without prior warning. there IS an increased risk of a crash possibly resulting in injury or death.
Remedy
Brp will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal connecting rod pins free of charge. the safety recall began on april 18, 2012. owners may contact brp at 1-888-638-5397.
Brp IS recalling certain model year 2010 spyder RS SE5 2ND series and rt SE5 roadsters. when bringing a vehicle equipped with the SE5 semi-automatic transmission to a full stop, the clutch may remain engaged stalling the engine. once the engine IS stalled, it could be impossible to re-start and the rear wheel could be blocked.

If this happens, the vehicle may not be able to be pushed off the roadway increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Brp will notify owners and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. the safety recall began on june 7, 2010. owners may contact brp at 1-888-638-5397.
Bombardier recreational products, inc. (Brp) IS recalling model year 2010 roadster spyder rt SM5 and SE5 motorcycles manufactured between october 13 and october 30, 2009. the connector on the key switch harness may not be locked and the ignition switch harness may be routed too tight. in some situations, the connector may unplug.
Risk and remedy

If this occurs, the vehicle may stall without warning and could potentially cause a crash.
Remedy
Brp will notify owners and authorized dealers will inspect to ensure that the connector IS locked and that the ignition switch harness IS not routed too tight and correct the harness if needed free of charge. the safety recall began on december 18, 2009. owners may contact brp at 1-888-638-5397 or 1-819-566-3366.

The contact owns a 2010 Can-Am Spyder RT. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the steering wheel became firm. The power steering and parking brake warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.

Possible dps fume canister concern on recall. fuel cap seems to allow water inside of the fuel tank? which then causes the bike to sputter and not want to "breath." when the bike IS warming up, it's spitting and sputtering, does not want to idle properly.

TL* the contact owns a 2010 can-am spyder rt. Upon starting up the motorcycle, a failure occured in which the the air bag for the suspension over inflated. The contact stated that the position sensor failed causing the air bag to fill to capacity without warning and other components failed associated with the suspension. The motorcycle was taken to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that if the manufacturer approved the modification, there needed to be an installation of a release valve. The manufacturer's technician stated that a release valve was not part of the design for this model and was aware that the sensor failure caused the air compressor to receive more air than necessary which caused additional failures. The motorcycle was taken to the dealer who replaced the spring stopper, new valves, new leveling arms, the shocks, a cap, new springs, a guide spring, urethane cushion, one shock, a flange hex screw, 2 spacers, 1 shock absorber, screw hex flanges, 2 nuts, 2 hex flanges and the position sensor. A technician also test drove the motorcycle after the repairs were completed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The approxmate failure mileage was 15,000.

But after several more instances riding on hot days I always smell gas and have noticed several times that the fuel in the tank IS boiling. You can open the cap and see it. This has been ongoing since purchase in may2011. Dealer told me my vin was not part of the recall for new gas cap. But we have been concerned since we purchased this bike, gas fumes in the same room with a water heater. *tr

Received a recall notice from bombardier recreational products on my 2010 can-am spyder rt SE5 concerning possible brake failure. have called the dealer twice and they do not have the repair parts required. the dealer stated they have been waiting for at least 4 weeks for parts to make required repairs but have not received any. there IS no expected date when the dealer will receive the parts. the recall letter states, "this condition may increase the risk of a crash possibly resulting in injury or death." based on this warning I no longer ride my can-am spyder and the dealer can give me no assistance. what can I do to force bombardier recreational products to honor their recall? *js

TL* the contact owns a 2010 can-am spyder rt roadster. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign ID number: 12v159000 service brakes, air:controls:foot control and contacted his local dealer. The dealer advised that the parts needed for the recall repairs were not readily available and would take three weeks before the parts would become available. The contact stated that the time frame in which the recall could be performed was unsatisfactory. In the meantime, the contact was driving 25 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the computer was updated but the failure was not corrected. The current and the failure mileages were 6,700.

While traveling in heavy traffic on interstate motorcycle suddenly and without warning dropped the speed from about 65mph to 40mph. steering system failed. drivers in back braking hard to avoid me, trying to get to shoulder but now the traffic to the right IS traveling twice as fast as I am. unable to go faster due to what manufacturer calls "limp home mode". finally got traffic in right lanes to slow to allow me to get safely to shoulder. Very harrowing experience. I have ridden motorcycles for over 50 years and have never ridden such an unsafe vehicle. this exact scenario happened two more times. after each occurrence the dealer repaired it under the direction of brp. All problems were related to bikes computer system that malfunctioned. Bike currently in shop for third time for same problem. You can read about others with same problem on "spyderlovers" blog. this bike has severe safety problems that the manufacturer IS unable to repair on all of its models. *tr

When attempting to cancel turn signals (left or right), it IS very likely that the opposite turn signal will be activated rather than canceling. this causes the driver to have to check the dash for turn signal cancellation. it IS common to have this occur multiple times with each cancellation attempt, causing the turn signals to alternate left & then right multiple times all while trying to cancel it. several attempts and several seconds of the driver's attention IS often required to successfully cancel turn signals. this presents a safety hazard as the driver IS not watching the road and traffic and also because the driver IS sending confusing signals of his/her intent to other drivers. This problem happens at any speed or while stopped. this problem can occur with every attempt to cancel the turn signal. This problem seems to be worse while wearing gloves. *kb

Can-am spyders with the semi-automatic "SE5" transmission can lurch forward and rapidly decelerate when the throttle IS mostly open and the transmission shift button IS pressed to shift to the next higher gear. Opening the throttle for quick acceleration, when merging into highway traffic, for instance, results in forces that push a rider's body toward the rear of the motorcycle. When this problem occurs, the transmission drops to neutral suddenly and for more several seconds resulting in the riders' bodies being accelerated forward rapidly--opposite the accelerating forces--in an unsafe manner than can result in near ejection from the motorcycle. Also, with the transmission in neutral for several seconds, the motorcycle decelerates rapidly, which can result in a rear-end collision, especially given that the driver was intentionally accelerating quickly for a maneuver such as merging or a lane change into faster traffic. That has happened to me on several occasions, usually when the spyder IS cold, i.e. Within 5 minutes of startup. The outside temperature has been between 27 and 50 degrees, though I do not know if the actual air temperature contributes to the issue.

So the dealer IS having to queue owners and delay fixing vehicles for what could end up being weeks. This leaves many owners on the roads with the potentially extremely dangerous defect. *Tr

TL- the contact owns a 2010 can- am spider. The contact stated that two weeks ago while traveling the steering locked and the engine died. The contact stated that this can happen at any speed. The dealer stated that there was a recall for the ignition switch for the motorcycle. When there IS too much pressure placed on the handle bars it can cause the steering to go out and the engine to stall. The contact was told there was recall for engine and engine cooling, which deals with the key switch and ignition switch harness. The campaign number IS 09v473000. The contact IS concerned that this failure IS dangerous and that the motorcycle was purchased new after the recall was established. The failure mileage and current mileages was 2800.rl

While at the dealer for recall repairs, the contact was informed that the bearings were also defective. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was left with the dealer where the contact was awaiting repairs. The failure mileage was 5 and the current mileage was approximately 900.

The contact called the local dealership and was informed that the failure was a known problem. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired at the time of the complaint. - 10252669Revision of TST 140875 P0730 Active Fault Fault code can be triggered if the unit has the wrong rear sprocket or a different wheel size. The cluster will stop displaying the gear indication and check engine light came on (limp home condition) and the gearbox won't shift.

- 10129606Technical Service Tip (TST) informing dealers that It has been brought to BRP's attention that in some cases the radio station display option in the cluster will revert to "no display" after a few days. BRP is looking into the situation. This issue has been identified as a software problem between the cluster and the radio module. At this time replacement of parts is not the solution since they all have the problem.
- 10129605Technical Service Tip (TST) informing dealers that BRP has noticed an increase in claims for the RT hood actuator switch. Switch inspection reveals the contact points inside the switch are exposed to high amperage. This causes an intermittent or permanently bad contact. The dealers are informed to inspect the hood actuator itself to see if the lever it pushes against is in-line and not obstructed. This could also happen if the front cargo is over packed and the pressure pressing up against the mechanism is beyond what the actuator can push and the switch gets too much amperage.
