Strong fuel odor, this jeep only has 8.000 miles on it I bought it used, strong fuel odor in and around jeep. Have it it in the shop 3 times no one can find the problem, I am afraid of a explosion that's how bad the smell IS the fuel smell IS overpowering, like I said mechanics at a jeep dealer can't find out what it IS and with having only a little over 8,000 miles it should not be doing this. The odor of gas can be strong while driving with the ac unit going through the vents and when it IS stationary it IS even stronger, smell started may the 15TH 2019
*Possible takata recall* but recall was completed and now unknown, reason I say that IS the the smoke seemed to becoming from the passenger side near the air bag.jeep was stationary and was started up to drive and began to smoke while parked in the drive way. The smoke smoke continued for approximately 3-4 seconds and was whitish blue in color. After the had dissipated there was a distinct smell of an electrical burn. All windows, blower, ac, heat controls work as normal, radio and speakers work as normal too. I've had my jeep sense 2012 and have never seen or experienced this issue before.
Whenever the gas tank IS filled, the gas will spurt out of where the nozzle IS inserted. when the pump stops, the gas will spurt out of the tank and drip down the side of the vehicle.
When driving on a bumpy road, sometimes the car goes into a really serious vibration mode. The first time it happened I thought I had a flat tire. I pulled over and looked; all tires were fine, and I drove away like nothing ever happened. This condition has occurred three separate times, now I move to the right and slow way down and the vibration stops. I'm afraid to take the car on the freeway.
The first of many times happened one morning as I was getting into vehicle. The horn, windshield wipers . The wipers sprayed all the fluid in the reservoir. I could not turn these off. After disconnecting the battery, the engine would not crank for some time and the horn no longer worked. The dealership diagnosed the problem as a faulty horn and replaced the clock spring, horn and a fuse. A few weeks later, while driving, the horn, wipers and lights all came on and I could not turn these off! Even after removing the key, the engine and all the above would not shut off! Once again, I had to disconnect the battery in order to shut these components off. This has happened numerous times since! The dealership IS now saying the problem IS with the tipm. But, in the meantime, IS this vehicle safe to drive? Today, I called chrysler customer service and they told me that they would document this. Not good enough! In the meantime.......i am somewhat fearful of driving my jeep for the simple reason of the unknown. Not to mention the embarrassment that this brings when stopped at a busy intersection and my horn and wipers start blaring uncontrollably. This must be stopped and chrysler should declare a recall! Please help my jeep IS my only means of transportation and I'm very scared of driving it as I'm scared of the unknown that'd it stall or possibly go crazy on me again. This has happened more than roughly about 18 times in the span of 2 months
Was driving in the city around 3PM and at random, all on its own, tmy jeeps horn started blaring nonstop, wiper fluid was spraying everywhere uncontrollably, wipers were going off on their own but werent functioning properly and the lights were on without being turned on, stayed that way about 5 miles until we got home and disconnected the battery since that was the only way to turn everything off. Next day, around 10PM, driving on the highway I had my beights turned on, after about 30 seconds, all of my lights turned off and the wiper fluid started spraying, wipers were going off, horn started blaring again non stop, disconnected battery again. This IS all coming from a defective tipm (totally integrated power module). This IS my daily driver and IS putting me out of work and money to repair this if chrysler does not issue a recall. This IS a huge safety issue that already got chrysler a lawsuit and IS probably going to lead to another if they dont fix this and recall these systems. I couldnt see anything while driving either time, especially at night. This could easily kill myself, any passengers or other drivers. I am also afraid that if the battery stays connected it will cause a fire under the hood since I can hear the cracking sound of electrical wires as the lights go crazy without being turned on.
Jeep recall-major electrical issues: horn, alarm, windshield wipers and fluid, lights, locks and windows all these things will just start working on their own-sometimes just by pushing the unlock button. the key doesn't have to be in the ignition and if it IS running and all these things start going off like the car IS possessed, when removing the key everything stays and and won't turn off-even the car will continue to run-literally run until it runs out of gas. very serious and dangerous issues-this IS going to cause a serious accident or death. many other jeep owners have complained about these same issues via the web and nothing has been done. dealerships are acting like it isn't a major ordeal and it needs to be addressed. this should obviously be a recall and it has been continued to be overlooked. these problems can and will occur when the vehicle IS stationary, in motion, on a city street or highway-literally all of the above. it affects vision and being able to operate the vehicle safely. although I put today's date on when this happened it has been on ongoing problem for the past 8 months to a year.
While driving this vehicle, along with two toddlers in the backseat, at 50 mph, without warning, the suspension began to shake violently. As II had never experienced anything like this in my life, my first instinct was to apply the brakes, as I had absolutely zero control of the vehicle. Wrong move! this caused the jeep to hop, and skip , I also lost the ability to steer. I then began to pray for my babies, who had been asleep in the backseat. I removed my foot from brakes, and fought with the steering wheel until I could crawl to a stop in the middle of the road!!! I was so shaken up, that I fear for my teenage son, who I share this vehicle with. After this incident, and some extensive research, I cannot believe these vehicles are allowed on the road! They are a hazard to so many innocent lives. Thank god, there was not any incoming traffic, on the highway at thie time. Something has to be done! Take action please!!!
Jeep basically possessed. Horn goes off, wipers turn on, wiper fluid sprays, door lock and unlock rapidly.(all by themselves). Remains running after turned off and key removed. Periodically shuts off while driving. Problem IS tipm(totaly integrated power module). 2007'S were recalled for these same issues but they will not acknowledge for the 2008's. I've spoke with several people who had 07'S that had the exact same symptoms. Affected part number - 04692236af
The air bag light keeps coming on and off as the car IS driven. I have done research and it appears this IS quite common in the cars. My concern IS does the air bag work or not. My 16 year old child used to drive this car but does not anymore. They recalled jeeps with the steering wheels on the left side with the exact same problem that I am describing. This IS dangerous and not sure why no one IS forcing a recall on this. I was originally told this was covered in a recall by galeana jeep in columbia s.c. And brought my jeep in to get worked on. When I got my jeep back the light was still turning on and off and I was told it was not covered. This IS not good business.
Another jeep same year and model had to have all their front end parts replaced too at the same dealership. second water pump in two years egr valve replaced but check engine light still on maintenance was done by the manual with this jeep
Clock spring broken. airbag light on. *tr
I was on a 1500 mile road trip with my son, half way to my destination when the horn, wipers, sprayers, door locks, etc started going berserk. It was disturbing and hazardous with the windshield sprayer constantly on making it difficult to see the road. the dealership (where I stopped) found that the tipm was going out and needed to be replaced. They could not replace it though because it was on backorder for several weeks. I had to continue my trip through the ca desert, during august knowing that at any time the tipm could fail and leave me stranded. The mechanic informed me of the possibility of a break down or fire. And now I am looking at about $1200, which I can't afford, for a part that was known (by chrysler) to be defective. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler 4 door 4X2. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for an unrelated repair when the mechanic stated that the front driver side brake line needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
My son was driving his jeep back to university when gauges started to flicker then go out. He then saw smoke from engine compartment and pulled to side of road. Looking under jeep around motor area he saw flames and backed away from vehicle. The fire spread quickly and engulfed the vehicle completely and it IS a total loss. The jeep had no major issues, just something electrical happened and it was over in about 30 minutes. *tr
Airbag warning light came on. I had to pay $89 for system diagnostics. Jeep dealership advised me the clockspring needed to be replaced at a cost of approximately $450. Chrysler has recalled right hand side steering models for the same defective part, but will not replace clocksprings on left hand steering models. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler 4-DR 4X2. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the air bag warning indicator illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and they informed that there was not a recall related to the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
The "death wobble" has occurred at multiple speeds, typically on highway. I have some video recording of this happening even at speeds of 35-50. vehicle begins severely shaking and IS not safe at all - driver nearly loses all control. can be induced by braking, by road bump, or apparently just random onset. replaced tires and had suspension work done and stabilizer shocks replaced twice. this has helped but not eliminated the problem and I expect it to deteriorate once again. once death wobble occurs, it can be resolved by either slowing down or speeding up. this IS extremely dangerous and one of two known jeep defects that they refuse to correct, with the second problem being the faulty transmissions that pop out of gear. very dissatisfied customer! *tr
Within a few months of purchasing the jeep wrangler, it began randomly popping out of 1ST gear. it was uncommon and inconsistent at first. it was returned to the dealer ([xxx]) multiple times and we were repeatedly told they "could not duplicate the issue". they kept the car for weeks on end. finally the tech duplicated the issue and replaced the transmission with a rebuilt. this fixed the problem only temporarily, and soon it began popping out of 1ST gear again. on vacation in pensacola fl, the problem got worse and was reported to the nearest jeep dealer. it was determined a new transmission was needed. upon return to houston, it was replaced with another rebuilt transmission by river oaks jeep. within a few months, it began popping out of first gear again. problem persisted until transmission went out and car was rendered undriveable on 5.10.13. towed to river oaks on 5.13.13 for repair once again, where it IS currently being evaluated. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *Tr
Fueling nozzel overflow. Gas pours out of tank nozzle before gas handle shuts off. Spilling gas all over car, person filling tank and surrounding area. *tr
While driving on 1-20 about 60mph, my vehicle suddenly began shaking violently and steering was out of control. I just bought my 2008 jeep and got the car fax and maintenance report and everything looked good. Im going on my 3RD month owning this used 2008 jeep & it has happened 4 other times again, and once to my husband. So a total of 6 different times. We have taken it to mechanics so they could tell us what it could be, and I get different answers. They tell me it could be the stabilizing bar needs changing, or need an alignment or check the tire pressure, or I need to change the control arm, or the steering shaft. I don't have this kind of money to be putting into a vehicle that I just bought, and was not cheap and no longer has warranty due to the year expiration. I don't think this IS a wear and tear problem. So many people experiencing this problem and clearly a safety related defect that I think the manufacturer should consider this as a recall and fix this problem for us. Jeeps have a reputation of being durable vehicles and last a long time, but now with this problem, im scared when I get in my jeep. I don't' have another car to use and don't have the money to fix this factory problem. We need your intervention because our highways and the owner of these 2008 jeeps are not safe and puts many people at risk every day. Someone please help us! *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler 4-DR 4X2. While driving approximately 55 mph, the front end of the vehicle began to shake violently which resulted in a slight loss of steering control. The contact maneuvered to the side of the road and the vehicle resumed in operation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer five to six times for the defect. The steering stabilizer was replaced five times. The repairs consisted of replacing the front end tie rod, including a replacement of all four tires. The failure recurred six months after the steering stabilizer was replaced. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
Death wobble IS now occurring on this jeep, as with numerous other jeep already reported to this website. not much else to add, except it's extremely dangerous. *tr
The airbag light in my jeep stays on because the clock spring IS broken. (Per the dealership). my speed does not matter. I have put in a complaint with chrysler customer service. *js
My 2008 jeep shakes violently when it hit a rough patch of road. this has happened 10 times to me the first time was 4/06/2011 the most recent time was 3/26/2012. I have replaced the damper bar (3) times, rotors and brake pads. I have taken my jeep to glendale and south county jeep in st. Louis, mo and they tell me I need to replace the damper bar and get new tires. [xxx] from customer care at chrysler has been very nice but not very helpful. I am not convinced this IS the problem since reading that many other jeep owners have experienced the same problem. I hope the us government steps up and helps. Please help before someone get killed. I look forward to someone contacting me since jeep feels they do not have a problem. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On May 10, 2016, Fiat Chrysler America (FCA) submitted a Part 573 Defect Information Report announcing NHTSA recall 16V290 involving 394,258 model year (MY) 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler vehicles.Under the recall FCA will replace the clockspring and install a steering wheel back cover and steering wheel column shroud. This recall also includes approx. 4,524 MY2007-2010 right hand drive (RHD) Jeep Wrangler vehicles commonly used for rural postal delivery services. In addition 7,180 MY 2011-2016 right hand drive Jeep Wrangler vehicles were also recalled under 16V288, the same remedy repair will be used.Upon review of the 1,942 MY 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler consumer complaints, 17,195 warranty reports and field returned parts assessment, FCA concluded that a defect exists in the driver side clockspring assembly, a device that both connects (electrically) the driver air bag to the control module and allows rotational movement between the steering wheel and fixed steering column.Clockspring failure may compromise the air bag circuit causing illumination of the air bag warning lamp, and may result in non-deployment of the driver air bag in a frontal crash.FCA identified a contributing factor in that the recalled vehicles may be subjected to off-road dusty environments and/or usage with the vehicle roof top/doors removed thus allowing dust and moisture to enter the clockspring assembly.FCA advised that the MY 2011 and later Wrangler vehicles had an improved steering column cover/shroud that may reduce the amount of dirt/moisture that can enter the clockspring assembly.During the investigation FCA and the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) also reviewed 193 MY 2011-2012 Jeep Wrangler consumer complaints, 3,918 warranty reports and field returned parts along with reports from other FCA vehicles that use the same clockspring assembly.Based on this review, the rate of repair and the failure mode does not indicate a defect trend at this time in the later MY Wrangler or other FCA vehicles.During the field return parts review, FCA found a significant number of MY 2011-2012 Wrangler returned parts that operated normally, the so called ?no trouble found? or NTF parts where no fault could be identified through bench testing. On June 10, 2016, FCA informed ODI of its intention to conduct a 15-yr, 150k mile extended warranty program due to the NTF issue and the MY 2011 and later vehicles having a somewhat elevated level of warranty replacement.Consumers will be notified of the program in writing.FCA will collect clocksprings replaced under the warranty extension program to further examine and study the root cause failure.ODI will monitor FCA?s analysis to determine if any further field action is warranted.Based on the actions taken by FCA to recall the MY 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler vehicles and the MY 2008-2016 right hand drive Wrangler vehicles, this investigation is closed.FCA has also agreed to conduct a warranty extension and further evaluation of the MY 2011-2016 Wrangler. At the time of FCA's field data submission in PE 15-025 (September 2015), ODI was aware of a total of 416 MY 2007-2010 and 23 MY 2011-2012 VOQs relevant to this issue. In addition, there have been an additional 90 and 16 VOQs (respectively) received since the recall announcement (i.e., thru May 2016).The reports noted above can be viewed at SaferCar.gov under the reference (ODI) numbers cited on the attached listing.
In it's response to ODI's PE15-025 Information Request letter, FCA identified 1,703 consumer complaints, field reports and legal claims responsive to the subject defect condition on the subject Wrangler vehicles.Six of these reports alleged an air bag non-deployment in a crash in which either the air bag warning light was allegedly on or came on afterward the crash, one of which also alleged injuries as a result of the non-deployment.FCA also provided data on other make, model and model year vehicles using the same clockspring.Additionally FCA provided 16,955 warranty claims related to the replacement of the air bag clockspring wiring assembly. It should be noted that FCA initiated an Extended Warranty Program on the left hand drive MY 2007 Wrangler in late calendar year 2011.6,777 of these claims are from the MY 2007 left hand drive Wrangler.FCA advises that some of the warranty claims involved clockspring failures that would not affect the air bag operation, for example due to noise, cruise control and/or radio operation issues. Many of these claims involved newer model year subject vehicles.FCA also noted that Wrangler's removable roof and door configuration may make it more susceptible to outdoor water/moisture and dust ingress.ODI investigated the right hand drive Wrangler in calender year 2011 for a similar clockspring issue under PE11-019.That investigation lead to NHTSA Safety Recall 11V258 on right hand drive model year (MY) 2008-2012 Wranglers.FCA redesigned the remedy clockspring to improve its durability and environmental protection and revised the design of the steering wheel to column shroud.Base on the data reviewed, this Preliminary Analysis (PE) is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA).The reports cited above are listed in the public investigative file available at SaferCar.gov under this investigation ID.
In a letter dated August 21, 2014, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged failures associated with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) installed in Chrysler SUV?s, trucks, and vans beginning in the 2007 model year. The petitioner alleges that TIPM defects may result in engine stall, airbag non-deployment, failure of fuel pump shutoff resulting in unintended acceleration, fire, and other symptoms. On September 25, 2014, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened DP14-004 to evaluate the petition for a grant or deny decision. ODI analyzed complaint data provided by CAS as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 296 complaints submitted by the petitioner in the original petition and five supplements, including 271 complaints related to the subject vehicles equipped with TIPM-7. Approximately 3 percent of CAS complaints are related to vehicles equipped with TIPM-6 and ODI?s review of these complaints did not identify any safety defect trends. ODI conducted a detailed review of complaints narratives submitted by CAS and consumers including careful analysis of vehicle repair histories, warranty claims obtained from the manufacturer and any available Customer Assistance Inquiry reports (CAIR). Analysis of the field data indicated that MY2011-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles exhibited significantly higher complaint rates related to fuel pump relay (FPR) failures than other subject vehicles. In a September 3, 2014 letter to NHTSA, Chrysler submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) identifying a defect in the FPR within the TIPM-7 which can result in a no start or stall condition in approximately 188,723 model year (MY) 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) and Dodge Durango (WD) vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010 through July 20, 2011 (14V-530).In a February 24, 2015 letter, Chrysler submitted a second DIR expanding the scope of the FPR defect condition to include an additional 338,216 MY 2012 through 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured from September 17, 2010 through August 19, 2013 and MY 2012 through 2013 Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 18, 2011 through August 19, 2013 (15V-115).ODI analysis of the CAS allegations of TIPM defects resulting in stall while driving, airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration, fire and other faults identified a single defect condition related to 1 of over 60 different circuits in the TIPM assembly. The most common effect of this defect condition, related to the fuel pump relay, was a no-start concern, but it could also result in stall while driving (76 complaints). No valid evidence was presented in support of claims related to airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration or fire resulting from TIPM faults and these claims were found to be wholly without merit based on review of the field data and design of the relevant systems and components.Except insofar as the petitioner's contentions relate to the defect condition addressed by the Chrysler recalls, the factual bases of the petitioner's contentions that any further investigation is necessary are unsupported. In our view, additional investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists or a NHTSA order for the notification and remedy of a safety-related defect as alleged by the petitioner at the conclusion of the requested investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is den
In its July 29, 2011 response to ODI's May 27, 2011 information request letter, Chrysler provided 153 MY 2007-2008 owner reports, additional to the 28 ODI Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs), which related to the illumination of the air bag light (ABL) due to a faulty clockspring (CS) wiring circuit. The right hand drive (RHD) vehicles, which were first produced in MY 2008 and account for only 1% of vehicle production, accounted for 82 of these 181 reports (45%).The MY2007 left hand drive (LHD) vehicle accounted for 61 of the remaining 92 LHD reports and exhibited a higher complaint rate than the MY 2008 LHD vehicles.ODI did not identify any incidents of crashes/injuries attributable to the CS circuit failure.Since May 27, 2011, ODI has received another 32 consumer complaints bringing the total to 213 reports at this closing. In addition, and for comparative purposes, Chrysler provided another 42 owner reports it received on the MY2006 and MY2009-2010 Wrangler vehicles; these populations showed a lower incident rate than the subject vehicles, especially in comparison to the RHD subject vehicles. Chrysler's investigation showed that the higher rate of RHD Wrangler CS failures were due to a more severe duty cycle for these vehicles which are primarily used by US Postal workers/mail carriers delivering mail in rural regions.Chrysler concluded the unique vehicle usage, much of which occurs with the driver's window open and under dusty environmental conditions, is the cause of premature CS failure.Chrysler's analysis also indicated that the somewhat elevated MY2007 LHD rate, which showed a declining failure trend, was the result of start-up production/assembly issues that occurred with the introduction of a new design CS.The new design CS incorporated both dual airbag inflator circuitry and a steering wheel angle sensor (for the electronic stability control system). On November 1, 2011, Chrysler submitted a defect notice indicating it will conduct a recall of all MY 2008-2012 RHD Wrangler vehicles (11V528).The estimated 5,334 RHD Wrangler vehicles include the 2,297 MY 2008 RHD Wrangler vehicles, which were the subject of this investigation, plus an additional 3,037 MY 2009-2012 RHD Wrangler vehicles that Chrysler determined potentially have a similar CS concern as the MY 2008 RHD vehicles.Chrysler intends to replace the existing CS with a yet-to-be-produced improved CS assembly, or an improved steering housing assembly that is less susceptible to dusty environments.Owner notice is scheduled to begin in November, 2011.Chrysler also informed ODI that it intends to initiate a consumer satisfaction campaign for MY2007 LHD Wrangler which will extend the CS warranty coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles.Accordingly the investigation is closed.
ODI found the rate of warranty claims related to fuel spit back on the subject vehicles is lower than other vehicles previously recalled to correct defects related to fuel spit back.Although the rate of complaints reported to the agency on the subject vehicles is higher than or similar to the rates experienced in previous investigations where safety recalls were conducted, ODI suspects that the NHTSA safety complaints submitted by subject vehicles owners may have been influenced by internet related publicity both before and during this investigation.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that no safety-related defect exists. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.See attached report for additional information. In addition, Chrysler is initiating a lifetime warranty program, at no cost to the consumer, to address the fuel spit back problem in approximately 135,000 model year 2007-2008 Jeep Wrangler vehicles built from March 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008.Chrysler will notify all affected vehicle owners of this action.Consumers should refer to the warranty and service bulletins and sample owner notification letter available in the investigative file. The vehicle build date can be found on the certification label located on the driver door or door jamb.
In a letter dated november 3, 2009, chrysler group llc (chrysler), notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall of approximately 161,000 model year (my) 2007 and 2008 jeep wrangler vehicles built with automatic transmissions.chrysler stated that these vehicles were not equipped with a transmission fluid temperature warning system and the operation of these vehicles beyond the limits of reasonable usage over a period of time could result in transmission failure and in some cases transmission fluid expulsion.the expelled fluid could come in contact with a hot engine or exhaust component and cause a fire.chrysler will conduct a safety recall to install a hot oil warning message in the instrument cluster and a chime indicating an elevated transmission fluid temperature condition.an owner's manual addendum stating the purpose of the hot oil message and chime to include caution and warning statements regarding elevated transmission fluid temperature conditions will be provided to owners.based on chrysler's decision to conduct a safety recall this engineering analysis IS closed.
The defective tow bar assemblies involved in this recall were supplied to chrysler for use on some of its jeep wrangler vehicles.the purpose of this investigation was to identify any additional purchasers of identical or substantially similar defective assemblies and to initiate additional defect reporting and safety recalls as necessary.to accomplish this rmd contacted the supplier of the assemblies, valley towing products, and confirmed no other such assemblies were distributed.this eq IS therefore closed.
