In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
MBUSA will their notify owners, and Fiat Chrysler will notify the affected Chrysler owners. Dealers for the respective brands will replace the driver's frontal air bag module, free of charge. This recall began November 2016. Mercedes-Benz owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 and Chrysler owners may contact Fiat Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
Takata recall notified over a year ago of recall. we have called 4 times to dealer since we received notice and they still cannot tell us anything. now I see they have filed bankrupcy. I have a car that I do not feel safe driving and cannot put anyone in the other seat.
"Takata recall" - my 2008 mercedes-benz slk280 has not had the airbag replaced as of oct. 26, 2016. My vehicle has an airbag with a takata made inflator, according to the recall notice.
Takata recall#16v-081 trying to get help from dealership having difficulties. I'm uncertain if I have other unknown issues as checked marked. this IS the 2ND recall. I am having a safety concern on this vehicle I purchased and management IS not cooperating/ assisting upset over a previous defective battery. I am uncertain if the same issue IS recurring and or effecting the door locks, dome lights, electronics, lights, vehicle will not start.
The convertible hard top hydraulic system start to leak oil to driver and passenger seat. The hard top does not move and difficult to close. I have received notification from several owners that it IS a current problem of all vehicles of models. This IS an unsafely problem, since the hard top, rear glass and trunk has problem to be locked completely. Apparently the mercedes benz manufacturer know that the hydraulic cylinders seals fail, once the mineral oil lose its property. This mean that hydraulic system get not protected after such oil IS inappropriate to protect the seal, resulting on leaking and car finish without protection,. If it happen when it IS snowing or raining or far away, it will become in a potential safety harmful problem for the drivers and passengers. I requested a service to mercedes benz and the answer vwas the repair will be almost $ 5000.00 merceds benz should repair all the hydraulic system for hard top under a recall. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2008 mercedes benz slk280. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, he crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy and the contact sustained chest injuries from the seat belt. The vehicle sustained severe damage to the front end and was towed to a collision center for repairs. A police report was not filed of the incident. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 56,000.
TL* the contact owns a 2008 mercedes benz slk280. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stationary, the hard convertible top would not release open when activated by the control device. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact of a recall associated with nhtsa campaign ID number 08v303000 (electrical system). The contact's vin was not included the recall. The manufacturer was not notified o the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000. The vin was unavailable.
Owned a brand new 2007 mercedes SLK 280 and the transmission was pushing and pulling to the point that it went out and had to be completely replaced; and ultimately, it was a 'buy-back.' afterwards, I had another new mercedes 280, now a 2008, and the transmission went out on that one too. big mistake on my part; what are the odds that another new one would go bad? the mercedes 7 speed automatic transmissions was a complete nightmare experience for me. since 2008, every time I see a mercedes SLK, I sometimes attempt to take a moment and ask the driver of the car: "hey, how's the transmission?" *kb
TL* the contact owns a 2008 mercedes benz slk280. The vehicle was equipped with bridgestone potenza tires, tire size 225/4.5/17. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph when he heard a loud noise coming from the outside of the vehicle. The failure occurred whenever traveling at low speeds. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer four different times where the technician informed that both rear tires exhibited uneven tread wear. Also, the vehicle was taken to the tire dealer on six separate occasions. The technician stated the vehicle required an alignment and tire rotation. An alignment was performed on the vehicle. However, the failure continued. The tire manufacturer was notified and they informed that the tires were not designed to be installed on the vehicle. There had been no additional repair or tire replacement at the time of the complaint. The contact was displeased to know that the incorrect tires were installed on the vehicle by the tire dealer. The failure mileage was 25,000. Dot number was 7gh8l4t2108.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.
