Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter VS30 and Freightliner Sprinter VS30 vehicles. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) blower motor circuit may be inadequate, which can allow the wiring harness to overheat.
Risk and remedy
Risk
A wiring harness that overheats increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Owners are advised to only operate the HVAC front blower in manual (not automatic) mode whenever the engine is on. Do not use the maximum blower or lowest/highest temperature settings until the remedy is performed. Dealers will relocate and replace the fuse and wiring harness, free of charge. Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles equipped with the camper upfit option. The Electronic Stability Control (ESP) software was not updated for vehicles with a higher center of gravity.

The ESP may not respond as intended during certain driving scenarios, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy

A hydraulic fluid leak may cause a sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy

If the operator relies on the provided owner's manual, the information about vehicle functions and other safety relevant information may be inaccurate and/or incomplete, which could lead to improper operation of the vehicle and potentially increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the printed version of the operator's manual with the latest version and update the software of the digital version, free of charge. Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. The affected Sprinter vehicles from platform 907 (VS30) might have an open port on the fuel delivery module (fuel pump).

An open port on the fuel pump module may result in fuel leaking onto the roadway, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy

Risk
The incorrect leaf spring shims may negatively affect vehicle handling, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the leaf spring shims on both sides, renew the spring brackets, check the rubber buffers for wear, renewing them if necessary, and adjust the headlamps, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for recall notification. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on September 18, 2020. The recall began October 1, 2020. Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes Benz Sprinter vehicles. The chassis may be missing the additional stabilization required for its cargo capacity. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems."

Risk
If the vehicle is operated without the additional stabilization, vehicle handling could be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the chassis by replacing the stabilizer bar on the front axle and replacing shock absorbers and installing a stabilizer bar on the rear axle, free of charge. Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Spinter vans (platform 970 (VS30)), equipped with swivel seats. The wiring harnesses for the front seats may have been routed incorrectly and could become jammed and damaged in the swivel seat frames.

Risk
If the wiring harness is damaged, the side air bag within the seat may deploy inadvertently or not deploy as designed in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and an authorized Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealer will inspect the wire harness routing for both front seats and will repair the wiring and add clips or cable ties as needed, free of charge. Loss of brake fluid can extend the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy

The lack of functioning rear fog lamps prevents the enhanced visibility of the vehicle to other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of crash.

Remedy
Daimler Vans will notify owners, advising them to stop driving the vehicle immediately. Dealers will inspect the bolts connecting the steering shaft to the steering gear, fully tightening and/or adjusting them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began February 15, 2019. At approximately 104 miles into a recent trip in our RV, while traveling at highway speed under cruise control, we noticed a strange odor. Almost at the same moment we immediately lost engine and braking power. The check engine light came on. We then noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment and noxious fumes had begun to enter the cabin area. After pulling to the side of the highway by use of the emergency brake, we were able to exit the vehicle. Flames could be seen coming from the engine bay and quickly engulfed the RV giving my wife, myself, and our dog only enough time to exit and get a safe distance away. The RV burned to basically nothing but the frame left.

The contact owns a 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500. The contact stated that while seated in the swivel chair inside the vehicle, she turned the swivel chair around to watch the television and several unknown warning lights started flashing on and off and the vehicle would not start. The contact stated that an independent mechanic was contacted and arrived at the residence to service the vehicle. An unknown repair was performed and the vehicle was able to be started. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the contact was informed that the seat wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the contact was concerned that by using electrical tape in the repair, the repair was not properly completed. The contact stated that while researching the failure, she became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V410000 (Electrical System, Back Over Prevention) which she related to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 15,000.

The contact owns a 2020 Tiffin Wayfarer Motorhome built on a 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500/4500 chassis. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55-65 MPH, the water tank fell onto the exhaust system. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 21V610000 (Trailer Hitches) and 21V753000 (Equipment). The contact called the local dealer who stated additional hours were needed to complete the repairs. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified however, declined the repairs. Parts distribution disconnect. The approximate failure mileage was 15,000.

Accident on 10/15/2020, unoccupied vehicle rolled from a parked position down a hill and struck a house. the vehicle IS designed to have the transmission automatically shift to park when the driver's door IS open, and this system was functional at the time of the incident. disengagement of the parking pawl was the cause of the event.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened this PE after receiving 11 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging that Model Year (MY) 2019 Mercedes-Benz (MB) Sprinter vans, configured for use as Amazon delivery vehicles or ambulances, roll away shortly after being shifted to park using the Auto-P function. A rollaway vehicle with no operator behind the steering wheel could potentially strike pedestrians, moving or parked vehicles or buildings, resulting in injury, fatality and/or property damage. Analysis of data provided by MB in response to the ODI Information Request (IR) letter showed a high failure rate. Following discussions with ODI about the failures, MB decided to conduct a safety recall. On December 15, 2021, Daimler Vans USA, LLC filed recall 21V-972 covering 48,400 model year (MY) 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz (MB) Sprinter vans. With recall 21V-972, this investigation is closed. The affected vehicle population determined by MB is Sprinter vehicles (VS30, Platform 907) produced between June 5, 2018 and November 30, 2020 with a manual parking brake and a 7-speed automatic transmission that was manufactured between May 1, 2018 and October 31, 2019, in the Hedelfingen transmission plant in Germany.Further use of Agency resources does not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist on other model or MY vehicles outside of the recall scope. - 11009854Complaint: Noises when reversing slowly <5 km/h (squeaking) Cause: There is a seal in the electric drivetrain that seals off the coolant system from the electric motor. This seal is moistened with coolant during forward travel. As a result of the change in rotational direction when reversing slowly, it may be the case that this sealing ring is no longer moistened. Squeaking noises may occur as a result of the so-called "stick-slip effect". This behavior does not impact the function or durability of the sealing ring and electric drivetrain. Remedy: Do not replace any parts. Explain the cause of the noises to the customer.

After completing the checks, please open a TIPS case and attach the collected information. Remedy Please complete the following inspections and tests: 1. Perform a tailpipe wipe test and document the results along with photographs. 2. Inspect the NOx connectors, pins, crimps, and harnesses between N37/7 and N37/8 to F152f59, Z7108, W105/3, and X30/81. 3. Provide actual values/sensor plausibility test results for all pressure and temperature sensors with the engine com- pletely cooled off for at least eight hours, the key on, and the engine off. Repeat the test with the engine/exhaust at operating temperature and the engine idling. 4. Perform a pressurized smoke test of the intake, charge air system, and exhaust to verify that there are no leaks. Apply overpressure (not exceeding 26 psi) from the exhaust pipe end and seal the system at the clean airline toward the air filter housing. Manipulate all components during the smoke test. 5. Provide diesel particulate filter actual values and regeneration history. 6. Inspect the SCR temperature sensor wirings and pins for electrical and physical correctness. Determine whether this sensor reaches operating temperature while driving and document the time it takes to reach operating temperatu- re. 7. Inspect the Adblue injector nozzle/s for clogging or leaking, and provide photographs. 8. With the Adblue injector/s removed from the exhaust system, perform two to three Adblue pressure tests and check for leaks. If leaks are detected, provide photographs. 9. Collect an Adblue sample, test fluid quality, and provide notes on its condition and quantity (color, clarity, separati- on, odor, etc.), along with a photograph for review. Also, provide a photograph of the spray pattern. 10. Separate the exhaust pipe downstream of the diesel particulate filter, inspect the diesel particulate filter and SCR, and note any soot, blockage, or damage. Provide photographs. 11. Inspect the SCR catalyst interior for dried Adblue residue, and provide photographs. 12. Perform several test drives at varying speeds to gather graphical illustrations (screenshots of the completed graphs in PDF format) of signals from NOx sensors. Provide three to four graphs or actual values of operational NOx sensors with XENTRY; see attachments for examples. Additionally, provide one graph/screenshot of the vehicle idling at operating temperature. Disconnect the Adblue injection valve, drive for approximately 30 minutes to exhaust all Ad- blue within the SCR catalytic converter, and provide two to three additional NOx graphs/screenshots with the sensor disconnected. - 11003187Mercedes-Benz AG, the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz Vans, has determined that on certain Sprinter and Metris vehicles, the B-pillar certification label might not contain information on the vehicle's rim size, tire size, and cold tire inflation pressure required under FMVSS 110 or, as applicable, FMVSS 120. In this case, relevant regulatory requirements might not be met. Mercedes-Benz believes this issue has no impact on vehicle safety. Mercedes-Benz intends to submit a petition to NHTSA for exemption from the notification and remedy requirements of 49 U.S.C. chapter 301, pursuant to 49 CFR Part 556, on the basis that this non-compliance is inconsequential as it relates to motor vehicle safety. MBUSA will conduct a service campaign to remedy new vehicles in dealer inventory. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the Certification Label on the affected vehicles.

Cause of Complaint B: Soot deposits between the EGR Valve blade and seat leading to the EGR Valve no longer being able to meet the desired target of the EGR Valve position controller. Cause of Complaint C: Internal EGR Valve or other electrical faults related to the EGR Valve function.

If electric cables in the wiring harness become jammed and damaged in the swivel-seat frame, the operation of the side airbag within the seat could be adversely affected which could cause the side airbag to deploy inadvertently or not deploy as designed in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
