Monaco IS recalling certain motor homes equipped with norcold refrigerators. a fatigue failure in the section of the cooling unit which contains the refrigerant could allow the liquid solution to slowly leak.
Risk and remedy

Extended operation of a leaking cooling unit could lead to a fire from gas which might escape.
Remedy
Monaco IS working with norcold to repair these refrigerators. norcold will provide thermal switch kits to owners along with the necessary forms and instructions. The recall began on august 29, 2008. owners may contact norcold at 1-800-767-9101 or monaco at 1-800-685-6545.
On certain motor homes, the federal certification label IS incorrect. the initial label shows tire size as 255/75r 22.5H with the correct tire size being 255/70r 22.5H.

Remedy
Dealers will install a corrected label on these motor homes. owner notification began on april 30, 2003. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free label within a reasonable time should contact monaco at 1-877-466-8226.
On certain motor homes, the brake assemblies exhibit elevated temperatures that can lead to catastrophic deterioration of the wheel end components such as bearings, races, spindles, knuckles, seals, hubs, rotors, patch bolts, calipers, brake pads, and ABS sensors.

Remedy
Dealers will inspect the front and rear brake calipers for corrosion and replace or rebuild the calipers as necessary. the recall began on august 18, 2004. owners should contact monaco at 1-800-685-6545.
Vehicle description: motor homes. a unit IS affected if the intermediate steering shaft IS fully compressed or IS too short to meet maximum extension specifications.

Vehicle description: motor homes equipped with allison 1000 or 2400 series transmissions. these transmissions can experience park pawl to rear cover interference due to an out of flatness condition.

This could cause non-engagement of the park pawl when the transmission shift selector IS moved to the park position, resulting in unintended vehicle movement and a vehicle crash without prior warning.
Remedy
Allison transmission IS conducting the owner notification and remedy for this campaign. dealers will remove the transmission from the vehicle, replace the park pawl, and reinstall the transmission in the vehicle. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact allison at 1-800-252-5283 or monaco at 1-800-685-6545.

The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that there were no recalls. The failure mileage was 32,000. The vin was unknown.

TL* the contact owns a 2001 monaco coach knight motor home. After parking the vehicle, the contact smelled smoke and noticed smoke under the rear of the vehicle. The contact also noticed that the calipers had large cracks, the rear driver side caliper was leaking brake fluid, and the ABS sensors were disconnected. The contact also noticed that the rotors and wheel seals also needed to be repaired. The contact repaired the vehicle, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, but it was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The vehicle year, make, and model was included in nhtsa campaign number: 02v278000 (service brakes: hydraulic). The vin and failure mileage were unknown.

TL* the contact owns a 2001 monaco coach knight 32FT motor coach. The contact was driving at 50 mph when he noticed smoke emitting from the front and rear brakes. The rear brakes and calipers had overheated. The dealer inspected the brakes and informed the contact that the entire brake line, sensors and calipers would need to be replaced. The contact stated the exact same failure had occurred less than one year ago and all sensors were replaced. The contact was able to locate a recall relative to the failure (nhtsa campaign ID number 02v278000- service brakes, hydraulic: foundation components) but was advised by the manufacturer that monaco had filed liquidation and had been taken over by a new company, therefore she would not be able to have the vehicle repaired under the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 33,000 and the current was unknown.

I own a 2001 monaco knight which I bought in 2006. We took a trip with our rv on 9/19/2008 and the brakes seized up. This caused the brake pads, rotors, bearings and oil reservoir to fail. While driving I smelled something, so I stopped to find out what the problem was. The wheels were actually smoking, it had not broke out into a fire yet, but I am sure it would have if I kept driving. I searched the web and found recall number 02v278000, monaco's recall number r02175 which described the exact same problem. I called monaco and they told me that the prior owner had the brakes checked and there was nothing wrong with them and there was nothing they could do for me. This motor home has only 20,000 miles and now because of this problem I now have to have the brake pads, rotors, and the internal parts of the front axles replaced, this IS not something a vehicle with only 21,000 miles on it should need. This problem IS exactly what the original recall was to prevent. I would like to see this recall reissued and hold monaco responsible for the repairs that I believe were never performed under the original recall. *Tr

Dt: the contact owned a 2001 monaco knight. The left rear inner tire had a blow out since it was there that the lp line was located. It ripped that line out, causing 40 gallons of lp gas to fill up the motor home. They where unable to contact dealership because they had already closed for the day. *Ak

Dt: the consumer stated he owns a 2001 monaco knight. he IS having problems with the bausch brakes. The brakes were recalled in campaign ID 04v116. The monaco file number IS r02175. He said that the calipers seized, starting a fire and burning the ABS sensors. there were faulty brakes. the consumer has had this in for recall repairs on september 22, 2004 . The dealer checked the calipers, then said they were fine. On november 17, 2004 one of the calipers failed, and on may 10, 2004 other calipers failed. Three out of the four brake calipers failed. The monaco company stated that recall repairs have already been made, and that IS all they could do.*ak there was a fire in the engine compartment due to a fuel leak. The consumer and his wife went to the emergency room. *jb

(1) the problem occurs when refueling the fuel tank. (2) upon refueling, when the fuel level in the fuel tank approaches the full level, a pulsing noise in the fuel tank starts and fuel starts discharging from the fuel tank's vent with force. The discharge continues as long as the pulsing noise continues. Shortly after the pulsing noise stops, the fuel discharge stops. The discharged amount measures from 1/2 pint to 1&1/2 gallons. The frist hazard IS environmental pollution from the discharged fuel. But the real hazard IS the possible ignition of up to 1&1/2 gallons of fuel discharged on the ground or paving directly underneath a full fuel tank on a 36 foot motor home. This would result in complete distruction of the motor hone, anyone inside the motor home, the fueling station, any motorist at or inside the fueling station and possible anyone passing the fueling station. (3) upon notifying the manufactory of this problem, they say the unit IS out of warranty and its my problem. to me, this IS a factory defect of the worse kind, brought to the manufactroy's attention before anyone IS injuries or any property damaged and they elect to do nothing..

There was a short in wire arking, the ABS light illuminated, and it was discovered the ABS sensor melted and all brakes were needed, after the dealer told the consumer numerous times there were no problems, and the consumer later discovered there was a recall on the brakes. There was a problem with the power steering and the front axle. *ak *jb

Monaco informed odi that it has received no owner reports of missing lp gas line shileds other than the one forwarded by odi.odi has found no other vehicle that was missing the lp line shield. During the course of the investigation odi: ?conducted field inspections at numerous dealers; ?requested warranty claims and field reports from monaco(there were none);reviewed engineering drawings;and?reviewed the ansi a119.2 and the national fire protection association 1192 standards on recreation vehicles (rv?s) pertaining to lp gas line installation on rv?s. Based on monaco?s data and the absence of any further complaints, a saftey related defect trend has not been identified at this time and futher use of agency resources IS not currently warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no saftey-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action on the vehicles if warranted by the circumstances. Odi will continue to monitor field reports and take appropriate action if indicated.
