Safety record from NHTSA: recalls, owner complaints, investigations and service bulletins.
These records cover every 1995 Chrysler Lhs. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
3 recalls name the 1995 Chrysler Lhs. Newest first.
On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. an inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.
Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
Dealers will install a new load-limiting push rod into the floor shifter lever of the affected vehicles. owner notification began on june 14, 2004. owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. the lower control arm attaching brackets can crack due to fatigue and separate from the engine cradle.
If this occurs, the transmission half-shaft could pull out of the transaxle and result in loss of power.
Dealers will reinforce the engine cradle at the point where the lower control arm attaches to it.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5L engines. the fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail.
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Dealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. however, if a vehicle IS leaking fuel from the o-rings or from a cracked fuel line, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible.

Even when I have my car off without my key in the ignition I can shift the vehicle between every different gear. If I'm on a hill or in a parking lot without even having my car running or having the key in the ignition of my vehicle I can go from park neutral drive reverse.
The car keeps on dying when I'm driving and when the car dies I lose my brakes and my power steering my mechanic told me it IS a problem with my fuel rails and I have noticed it leaking gasoline once in awhile.
TL* the contact owns a 1995 chrysler lhs. The contact stated that there was an overpowering odor of gasoline coming from the vehicle that was noticeable in the interior cabin. After examining the vehicle, the contact discovered that the fuel rail was fractured. The vehicle was repaired by the contact and was not diagnosed by the dealer. Prior to the failure, the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign ID number: 98v184000 (fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system). The current and failure mileage was 235,000.
Lots of play in steering 7 to 8 inchs. Had to replace rack and pinion. Cost $650. Went out again august of 2010. *tr *js
1995 chrysler lhs fuel rail leak, gasoline pouring onto engine manifold (2ND owner of car) was repaired 8YRS ago for same issue at my own cost unaware of recall of fuel rail problem when purchased vehicle . Dealer refuses to correct problem ..it has a recall for the fuel rail leaking and or o- rings failure for year and vin of vehicle they state it was done in 1999. *Tr
Constant fuel vapor fumes of raw gas coming into the vehicle, recall campaign 98v184000 was done to the vehicle as the reinforcements are present, fumes occur daily with presence of fuel coming out of reinforcement area outlet fuel rail was not replaced. Believe chrysler needs to replace the outlet fuel rail as per recall as reinforcements do not hold up. *Tr
1995 chrysler lhs fuel o-ring and fuel rail problem fixed by dealer under a national recall. same issue has resurfaced with the fuel o-ring and fuel rail. Dealer has indicated it will not be fixed now under the recall.. vehicle IS a fire and explosion hazard and should be fixed under the recall. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1995 chrysler lhs. the contact heard a loud crushing noise when the brake pedal was depressed. he also noticed that the brake pedal was resistant upon application. upon further inspection, he noticed that the brake pads, rotors, and related components were in normal condition. on one occasion when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle would not stop and crashed into another vehicle. there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel prior to the failure. the vehicle was completely destroyed and three occupants were moderately injured. a police report was filed. the failure and current mileages were 120,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 1995 chrysler lhs. while driving 25 mph, strong gasoline fumes began to enter the passenger compartment. the contact took the vehicle to a dealer per nhtsa campaign ID number 98v184000 (fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system). the dealer stated that the failure occurred with the driver side fuel rail, therefore rendering the recall as null and void even though the parts and failure were identical. no repairs were made. the vin and number of cylinders were unknown. the current and failure mileages were 175,000. Fuel rail cracked spilling fuel over the engine. took to mechanic for diagnosis, parts and labor 760.00. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated in january 1999, a recall letter was received for the fuel injection system, nhtsa #98v184000. the vehicle was taken to the dealership and the recall work was performed. in february 2004, fuel began to leak from the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to the dealership and the o-rings were replaced. the manufacturer was contacted for reimbursement, but because the failure occurred after the one year warranty, the claim was denied.
Dt*: the contact stated the driver's side lower control arm fractured while driving 15 mph causing the half axle to pull out of the transaxle. there IS an nhtsa recall, # 99v215000, regarding the suspension:front:control arm:lower arm. the vin was not included in the recall.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 20 mph, a snapping sound was heard followed by a loss of steering. the contact stopped and exited the vehicle to call a friend. the friend noticed two bolts lying on the ground that appeared to be part of the steering. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who determined the steering rack and pinion needed to be replaced and the steering system needed to be flushed. the manufacturer was also alerted of the problem. updated 7/3/2006 - *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while pulling into the driveway, at three to five mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and struck another vehicle parked in the driveway. the contact was wearing a seat belt, but it did not lock upon impact. the contact received minor injuries as a result of the seat belt failure. the frontal airbag failed to deploy. the police and manufacturer were not alerted.
I was having some uneven and premature front tire wear problems. I thought that the inner tie rod bushings were simply worn out. I found out instead that one of the bolts that hold the inner tie rod ends to the steering rack had actually sheared/ broken, and this was allowing the excessive slop in the steering. Obviously, if the bolt would have sheared all the way off, sudden and catastrophic (possibly deadly) loss of steering would have occurred, without warning. In order to remove/extract the broken bolt, the steering rack had to be removed from the car to facilitate access to the broken bolt with an extractor. This IS an expensive 6 hours of labor job, to repair a simple broken bolt. Not only IS it ridiculously expensive to repair, this IS an item (the tie rod to steering rack bolt) that should never break from normal usage of the automobile. I subsequently found from on-line research that this IS not an uncommon problem in the chrysler lh platform cars. Also, that there have been many consumer complaints, and several lawsuits due to alleged defective design, insufficient service/inspection procedures, or materials, relating directly to the lh platform steering, including severe accidents caused by this identical failure. Also complaints of chrysler offering no assistance to the consumer (including me) in regards to this very dangerous (and expensive to repair) defect. *jb
Dt: consumer's friend wrecked into a telephone pole with front impact, and both air bags did not deploy. had not taken the vehicle to dealership. did not contact manufacturer. had not replaced air bags. *ak
I experienced a loud clunking sound when I turned the steering wheel. also when I drove over uneven pavement or an uneven entry to a driveway I could hear the same sound and could feel it through the steering wheel. I had a dealership check it out and they found that there was a bolt that had worked itself loose on the lower control arm. I have found information on the internet related to steering failures leading to death on several vehicles with the same steering components that my car has. fortunately I caught this early enough to prevent a disasterous even like other people have experienced. they tightened the bolt. I understant that chrysler corporation has changed the torque specifications and the bushing used on the tie-rod ends in order to prevent the type of failures that many people have experienced. if you would like to look at the information that I found concerning steering components, premature transmission failure and premature engine failure, go to: http://www.daimlerchryslervehicleproblems.com here you can read all about the multitude of problems that chrysler products are experiencing.
Dt: 3 months ago the consumer was driving toward the city and the vehicle made a loud noise, and then car started smoking. Consumer pulled off the highway, there was smoke everywhere. Consumer had car towed. It was running fine before this incident. mechanic said that the car threw a rod, and needed a new motor and transmission. Consumer was not driving the car because the she could not afford to have it fixed.*ak
'Recall campaign' for chrysler lhs 1995, transaxle floor shifter ignition/park interlock. *bf recall#04v021000. the consumer believed the crash he was involved in was related to the recall. *jb
While the consumer was standing by the vehicle it suddenly began to roll forward. Consumer ran behind the vehicle, grabbed the door and was dragged a few feet, injuring his knees, before he was able to open the door and slam the gear into park. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, where he was told he had stripped a gear. however, there was a recall for the shift interlock. consumer felt that since the recall caused him to strip the gear when the vehicle rolled, should be part of the repair made to the vehicle, along with the shift interlock nhtsa recall 04v021000.*ak
A yellow substance accumulated inside the headlights lens. This would distract the driver's view when driving during night hours. *jb manufacturer was notified. *tt
Consumer had to put 2 transmissions into vehicle. this one that IS in the vehicle now IS defective. consumer put key into the ignition, and sometimes the vehicle will jerk.also, while driving some times vehicle will not change gears. consumer felt that there should be a recall on the transmission. *Ak
Power sun roof flew out of the top of the car. The fram and basic cab;e structure remained but the glass blew out. Replacement cost IS estimated at $800 plus labor. This seems very high to me. It could have caused an accident if someone had been traveling behind us.*ak
This vehicle was purchased used. 2 weeks after purchase the rear brake bads failed causing them to grind on the rotors. Brakes and rotors were replaced. Drivers side seat support IS broken. Power steering pump has a leak. Transmission clutches burned out requiring replacement. Water pump failed along with failing timing belt & timing belt tensioner causing needed replacement. Engine has several oil leaks. Rack & pinion system IS shifting, causing a thumping sound and vehicle shifting while cornering at times. Selt belt on drivers side doesn't retract properly. Brakes perform poorly, requiring excessive pedal to stop vehicle. Fuel rail IS leaking fuel, awaiting mechanic determination if it's covered under the recall. *Ak
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On september 5, 2004, mr. Robert galenty of iselin, nj, petitioned the agency to conduct defect investigations of certain model year (my) 1993-1997 vehicles produced by daimlerchrysler corporation.his petition identified three issues of concern: 1) fuel leaking from the fuel injector rails; 2) brake fluid contamination resulting in brake failure; and 3) susceptibility of the vehicle frame to damage while the vehicle IS being towed.mr. Galanty alleged that his 1996 dodge intrepid had each of these three problems.concerning fuel rail leakage, daimlerchrysler commenced a recall (98v-184) of approximately 722,600 vehicles to address engine fuel rail leaks that could lead to a fire, including those vehicles cited in the petition and the petitioner's 1996 dodge intrepid.on october 7, 1998, nhtsa opened a recall query investigation (rq98-018) to evaluate the adequacy of the recall remedy.that investigation was closed on july 8, 2002 without requiring further action by daimlerchrysler.very recently, on june 9, 2004, nhtsa denied a petition (rp04-001) to reopen rq98-018 after finding that there was no new information that would indicate any basis for reopening it.this IS still the current position of nhtsa on this issue.concerning brake fluid contamination and frame alignment, a review of nhtsa's database shows no other complaints on either one of these issues on the vehicles cited in the petition.
The manufacturer reports above are based on daimlerchrysler?s (dc) analysis of model year (my) 1998 (population = 356,384) and 1999 (population = 486,948) ja, JX and lh family subject vehicle data (earlier mys excluded).the population number includes all mys.the precise number of duplicates between odi and dc reports cannot be determined due to missing or incomplete information.the fatality incident involved an elderly person who attempted to stop a roll away vehicle and received fatal injuries.odi also gathered information on my 1997-99 prowler vehicles in this investigation. The prowler vehicles were manufactured with a different design shifter mechanism (the shift lever IS shorter).there are no complaints of prowler interlock failure in odi?s database, and dc has received no reports either.the prowler IS excluded from the recall scope.the investigation involved a condition where the interlock system could fail (or be made inoperative by the operator) during vehicle use, possibly inadvertently.the interlock system IS required under fmvss 114.with the transmission in the park position and the ignition key off, the combined action of pressing the shift button and pulling the shift lever rearward may result in the operator overcoming the interlock system and cause the mechanical linkage of the system to disconnect.when this occurs, there IS no overt indication to an operator that the system IS defeated, and an increased risk of vehicle roll-away exists.under recall 04v021, dc will replace damaged shift mechanisms, and will install on all vehicles a device which inhibits the operator?s ability to overcome the interlock and defeat the system.beginning with my 2000, dc incorporated a brake and transmission shifter interlock (btsi) system into the subject vehicles.introduction of btsi involved design changes to the shift mechanism, one of which resulted in reduced mechanical advantage (rma) of the shift button.the rma shifter requires increased forces to overcome the interlock system, making the shifter less susceptible to damage.
Mr. Larry a. Sackey submitted a petition to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) by letter dated april 18, 2003, requesting that nhtsafurther investigate the defective collapsible steering shaft system on 1987-1995 vehicles manufactured by the daimlerchrysler corporation.in part because of 49 cfr ? 30120(G), nhtsa has decided to limit the scope of the petition vehicles to 1993-1995 models, excluding the 1993 jeep grand cherokee and 1994-1995 dodge RAM series trucks that were recalled (93v210 & 96v230) for steering column failure.if the analysis of these vehicles had identified a potential problem, the scope could have been expanded in an investigation.a review of odi's data base shows no recent complaints and a lack of a complaint trend concerning the subject issue on the subject vehicles as a whole or by individual models.therefore, the petition IS denied.for details, see federal register notice volume 68, no. 130, july 8, 2003.
There is no summary currently available
Since opening the preliminary evaluation (pe), odi has received 6 additional complaints.during the pe it was determined multiple failure modes are involved in this matter.the warranty claim rate IS high for a steering system concern.the issues reported involve premature wear out at the rack and pinion interface with the inner tie rod end(s), binding and sticking of the steering gear, cracked or broken tie rod ends, sheared rack and pinion assembly bolts, and wear out of the rack and pinion mount bushings.many of the complainants mention steering wonder and loose steering.three of the most recent complaints allege a complete loss of steering due to sheared bolts.odi IS upgrading this pe in order to perform a thorough technical analysis of the various system failure allegations and to quantify the effect that these failures have on vehicle control.
Nitrile rubber seals used in the fuel rail assemblies of the subject vehicles at the supply, return, and crossover tube fittings, and at the pressure regulator fail, resulting in fuel leakage in the engine compartment.also, the outlet (right) fuel rail may leak from cracks at certain mold gates in the thermoset rail material.chrysler will recall the subject vehicles and stated that it intends to replace the o-rings with fluorocarbon o-ring having greater heat resistance capability and attach reinforcements to the rail in the areas where the cracking concern has been known to occur most frequently.rails that are already cracked will be replaced by new, reinforced rails.
A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if waarranted by the circumstances.an engineering analysis clossing report IS included in the public file.
