These records cover every 1995 Dodge Intrepid. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
3 recalls name the 1995 Dodge Intrepid. Newest first.
On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. an inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.
Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
Dealers will install a new load-limiting push rod into the floor shifter lever of the affected vehicles. owner notification began on june 14, 2004. owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. the lower control arm attaching brackets can crack due to fatigue and separate from the engine cradle.
If this occurs, the transmission half-shaft could pull out of the transaxle and result in loss of power.
Dealers will reinforce the engine cradle at the point where the lower control arm attaches to it.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5L engines. the fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail.
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Dealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. however, if a vehicle IS leaking fuel from the o-rings or from a cracked fuel line, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible.
TL* the contact owns a 1995 dodge intrepid. While driving 65 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle did not stop and crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The driver's side air bag did not deploy. The passenger side air bag deployed, but there was no passenger. There were no injuries. Police report number: 19-341341 was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent lot. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 113,000. *tr*jb
Rack and pinion issues. Issues with front wheels and steering. I've had it fixed three times, very expensive. I was pulling out of a parking space, when the steer stopped controlling the wheels. I'm grateful I wasn't on the free way.
1995 dodge intrepid. consumer writes in regards vehicle stalling while driving. *Smd the consumer stated when the vehicle stalled, the power steering failed and it was difficult to steer the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop, where the ignition switch was replaced. *Jb
Purchased car on 8/11/14, drove it home and on 8/12/14 started car and say gas spraying out of injectors on top of motor. All injector seals were bad and had to be replaced, same with valve cover gaskets oil was running down on exhaust manifolds. Both were fire hazards, 8/27/14, right side axle IS bad and bearing in differential IS bad. This car has a 4/15 inspection sticker on windshield, how could this car pass the va state inspection with this many problems? And all brake pads had to be replaced. They were worn out to. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1995 dodge intrepid. When the contact started the vehicle, fuel fumes seeped into the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed a fuel leak near the intake manifold in the motor. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact stated that the o-rings needed to be replaced, but the parts were not available in order to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000. updated 10/10/14*cn updated 3/31/15 *js
TL* the contact owns a 1995 dodge intrepid. The contact stated that the key would become stuck in the ignition sporadically and the contact would have to abruptly shift into park. The contact stated that the failure did not occur until having repairs to the vehicle under nhtsa recall campaign ID number: 04v021000 (power train: automatic transmission: lever and linkage: floor shifter). the manufacturer stated that the repair had already been done and could not be corrected. The failure mileage was 143,600.
Dodge transmission on intrepids, caravans, and neons have a history of failing and needing to be replaced or rebuilt. My vehicle only has 55800 miles on it all original. Even though the car IS 15 years old it has always been maintained since it was purchased from the dealer brand new in 1995. I believe that if dodge IS not held responsible for the problems then someone can seriously get injured from them. Whether it be from the transmission failing on the highway and causing accidents or something breaking while just driving and causing serious injury. *tr
I was driving down the road when my car just died. I didn't get any flashing lights, check engine light or anything. It was as IS someone had turned the car off with out moving the key from the on position. Once I come to a stop, I can sit for a little bit and then the car will start back up as if nothing ever happened. I have recently had a few issues with some other things that were resolved by replacing the ignition switch but it didn't seem to fix this issue. I took the car to a repair shop and had the diagnostics ran on it but it didn't come back with any codes. I often drive with my wife and kids in the car so now I fear that this may cause us to get in a wreck. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1995 dodge intrepid. While driving at a speed of 40 mph the contact heard a loud pop and suddenly the power steering stopped functioning. The contact had minimal control of the steering wheel. The contact called the manufacturer and they informed him that the warranty expired and that there were no recalls related to the power steering for his year, make and model vehicle. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileages were 195000.
I have a 1995 dodge intrepid. until 4 months ago, it never had a problem, only did routine maintenance and that was constantly done. it has a new transmission and radiator (under extended warranty), and new starter, alternator, and battery. the fuel pump was replaced about 2-3 years ago. four months ago, the car started to act up. first, I noticed a "burnt oil or anti-freeze" smell. I took it to my mechanic, who I have had for more than 15 years. he couldn't find any leaks or problems and reminded me that all the hoses and accessories were replace a year before. he said that he saw nothing dripping or building up anywhere. a week later, I would drive it somewhere, get out and do whatever it was I needed to do, go back and it wouldn't start. everything sounds normal, like it wants to start, but doesn't. if I wait 30-90 minutes and try again, it will start right up and a check engine light would come on, but go back off within a few minutes. a month later things got worse. it started to die while driving. I would be in the car for less than 10 miles and all the lights on the dash would "flash" and the car would die. it takes between 2-3 hours before getting it to restart when this happens. this puts me in serious danger as the car no longer has power steering or power brakes and I live on a mountain with no where I can get off the road. I have nearly been hit/killed when this has happened. since then, I can't go 1 mile without it dying or not start again. as a matter-of-fact, if I leave it idling in my driveway, it will die with 2-4 minutes. I have taken it to my shop 4 times and 2 other ones trying to find out what IS wrong. they all say that since the "check engine" light only flashes and then goes off, the computer can't catch the problem. sometimes they think it IS the fuel pump or fuel lines; sometimes they think it IS electrical; most of the time they just have no idea what IS wrong! *Tr
Inner steering bushing replaced now the steering rack knocking and not turning to right. *Tr
Factory struts(suspension) are inadequate to support the weight of the vehicle. My strut mount/plate &bolts broke at 55 mile per hour & the strut went through the strut housing/plate. The steering/suspension system IS completely affected when the struts begin to fail on all vehicles. When struts fail springs also fail causing even more stress on the other steering/suspension parts(all bushings, tie rods. Control arms, ball joints, cv joints, transaxle, sway bar. I hope im making sense, this needs serious examination as clunk/ bump noises every intrepid are bad struts or bad strut mount/bolts which immediately indicate your suspension/steering system IS being banged up. the inner tie rod bolts in steering rack back out or try to due to torn bushings in the inner tie rods at the steering rack center. These bushings tear due to worn struts that put stress on tie rods sway bar& steering rack mount bushings both compress with the extra stress of failing struts. steering rack shifts due to bad inner tie rod bushings causing play in your tie rods and the steering rack mount bushings now compressed cause the rack to shift also. Same with sway bar bushings&any other suspension parts and steering when this happens such as inner tie rods, outer tie rods, cv joints, transaxle, ball joints, all bushings, linkages, mounts, cradle car was built defectively as the weight of the vehicle IS too much force for the struts that come factory installed. There needs to be an immediate call back on the struts with a service order to examine and repair torn or compressed bushings in the inner tie rods/steering rack mounting/sway bar/ball joint/control arm/outer tie rod/along with any damage to the cv joint&transaxles due to the design defect using inadequate struts for the vehicles weight! this may seem like an extreme request but since they were negligent to never report the inadequacy of the struts vs design in all the complaints on steering/suspension a recall IS in order. *tr
The vehicle had the usual filter, and fluid changes and began to slip and now the transmission IS out. the fluid in it IS still clean. Can't understand why it would just go out like that. This isn't the first problem I have had. Also had to replace the rack-n-pinion on it. The bolt holding it together came out while driving it. *tr
Gas fumes are entering the cockpit of the vehicle while driving. I noticed gasoline setting on top of the transmission housing under the hood. I believe it IS a fuel rail problem or o ring problem causing the leakage. I am taking it in to a dealer today to have it checked. *tr
1995 dodge intrepid had a safety recall- fuel rail leak - customer paid out of pocket looking for reimbursement**cc the consumer stated he noticed gasoline leaking from the vehicle years prior to the recall being issued. the air conditioner was inoperable, the dealer replaced the transducer. *Jb
Fuel injector rail defect. Recall was done and I was not notified. *jb
Consumer complaint concerning the safety recall on the 1995 dodge intrepid fuel rail o-rings. *ts it took the dealer almost ten year to figure out why the vehicle constantly had a fuel smell. the consumer request reimbursement for the repairs made over the years related to the fuel system. *nm
Left front wheel bearing and axle, left and right outer tie rods, front right ball joint, strut rod bushings, windshield wiper bearings, left front door lock doesn't work, left front window won't let down and roof paint. *jb
I was involved in a 45 mph side collision with a pole after hydroplaning and my vehicle burst into flames killing my 15 month old daughter 3 years ago. My lawyers say it was what they believe was a defect in the vehicle or a bad design. *nm
Dt: the contact stated while driving the front passenger tire fell off the vehicle. Had the inner and outer tie rods replaced twice. did one replacement before the tire fell off. the second replacement was done after the tire came off. the replacements did not remedy the problem. while driving it felt as though the wheels were falling off. when hitting a bump while driving there was a snapping noise from underneath the vehicle. another concern was the electrical system. only one headlight will work on bright and only one will work on dim. the contact replaced both bulbs in the headlights, but this did not remedy the problem. he checked the fuses, and there were no problems with them. also, the headlight switch fell off without being hit or knocked off. *ak
Dt: the caller had recall 2c45182 work done on august 17, 2005. Two days later while driving the vehicle it shifted itself into reverse and stalled in traffic. dealer said she will have to pay to have it towed and repaired. Dealer said they wont even look at it until she paid.. She said she had no trouble before the recall work was done. Manufacturer said to take it back to the dealer. *Ak
Lost all power while on freeway. Same thing happen on jan 05. Had to replace a computer chip pn r4606240. mechanic stated this was a problem of location on car (back under exhaust. My family was lucky the we we able to move to side of road have there been any other compaints in this regard thank you
Nhtsa recall campaign 98v184000, consumer received a recall for the o rings. She took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told there weren't any signs of fuel leakage. The consumer smelled gas and service man smelled for gas but didn't find anything. Dealer stated there was a defective fuel rail. Consumer had to pay for repairs and feels the dealership should pay for it. *Ak *sb
Throttle was stuck. Consumer proceeded to inspect the vehicle and found that the throttle cable broke. after making contact with the manufacturer to obtain a new cable, he was told that cable was no longer available for the year of this model. consumer was upset because the vehicle would be inoperative without the cable.*ak
While driving 40 mph driver noticed that the ABS light appeared on the dashboard. Driver applied the brake pedal and the vehicle failed to stop and collided into another vehicle. driver sustained major injuries, and was transported to a hospital. the vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection. the cause had not been determined at this time. *ak *bf *nm
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On september 5, 2004, mr. Robert galenty of iselin, nj, petitioned the agency to conduct defect investigations of certain model year (my) 1993-1997 vehicles produced by daimlerchrysler corporation.his petition identified three issues of concern: 1) fuel leaking from the fuel injector rails; 2) brake fluid contamination resulting in brake failure; and 3) susceptibility of the vehicle frame to damage while the vehicle IS being towed.mr. Galanty alleged that his 1996 dodge intrepid had each of these three problems.concerning fuel rail leakage, daimlerchrysler commenced a recall (98v-184) of approximately 722,600 vehicles to address engine fuel rail leaks that could lead to a fire, including those vehicles cited in the petition and the petitioner's 1996 dodge intrepid.on october 7, 1998, nhtsa opened a recall query investigation (rq98-018) to evaluate the adequacy of the recall remedy.that investigation was closed on july 8, 2002 without requiring further action by daimlerchrysler.very recently, on june 9, 2004, nhtsa denied a petition (rp04-001) to reopen rq98-018 after finding that there was no new information that would indicate any basis for reopening it.this IS still the current position of nhtsa on this issue.concerning brake fluid contamination and frame alignment, a review of nhtsa's database shows no other complaints on either one of these issues on the vehicles cited in the petition.
The manufacturer reports above are based on daimlerchrysler?s (dc) analysis of model year (my) 1998 (population = 356,384) and 1999 (population = 486,948) ja, JX and lh family subject vehicle data (earlier mys excluded).the population number includes all mys.the precise number of duplicates between odi and dc reports cannot be determined due to missing or incomplete information.the fatality incident involved an elderly person who attempted to stop a roll away vehicle and received fatal injuries.odi also gathered information on my 1997-99 prowler vehicles in this investigation. The prowler vehicles were manufactured with a different design shifter mechanism (the shift lever IS shorter).there are no complaints of prowler interlock failure in odi?s database, and dc has received no reports either.the prowler IS excluded from the recall scope.the investigation involved a condition where the interlock system could fail (or be made inoperative by the operator) during vehicle use, possibly inadvertently.the interlock system IS required under fmvss 114.with the transmission in the park position and the ignition key off, the combined action of pressing the shift button and pulling the shift lever rearward may result in the operator overcoming the interlock system and cause the mechanical linkage of the system to disconnect.when this occurs, there IS no overt indication to an operator that the system IS defeated, and an increased risk of vehicle roll-away exists.under recall 04v021, dc will replace damaged shift mechanisms, and will install on all vehicles a device which inhibits the operator?s ability to overcome the interlock and defeat the system.beginning with my 2000, dc incorporated a brake and transmission shifter interlock (btsi) system into the subject vehicles.introduction of btsi involved design changes to the shift mechanism, one of which resulted in reduced mechanical advantage (rma) of the shift button.the rma shifter requires increased forces to overcome the interlock system, making the shifter less susceptible to damage.
Mr. Larry a. Sackey submitted a petition to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) by letter dated april 18, 2003, requesting that nhtsafurther investigate the defective collapsible steering shaft system on 1987-1995 vehicles manufactured by the daimlerchrysler corporation.in part because of 49 cfr ? 30120(G), nhtsa has decided to limit the scope of the petition vehicles to 1993-1995 models, excluding the 1993 jeep grand cherokee and 1994-1995 dodge RAM series trucks that were recalled (93v210 & 96v230) for steering column failure.if the analysis of these vehicles had identified a potential problem, the scope could have been expanded in an investigation.a review of odi's data base shows no recent complaints and a lack of a complaint trend concerning the subject issue on the subject vehicles as a whole or by individual models.therefore, the petition IS denied.for details, see federal register notice volume 68, no. 130, july 8, 2003.
There is no summary currently available
Since opening the preliminary evaluation (pe), odi has received 6 additional complaints.during the pe it was determined multiple failure modes are involved in this matter.the warranty claim rate IS high for a steering system concern.the issues reported involve premature wear out at the rack and pinion interface with the inner tie rod end(s), binding and sticking of the steering gear, cracked or broken tie rod ends, sheared rack and pinion assembly bolts, and wear out of the rack and pinion mount bushings.many of the complainants mention steering wonder and loose steering.three of the most recent complaints allege a complete loss of steering due to sheared bolts.odi IS upgrading this pe in order to perform a thorough technical analysis of the various system failure allegations and to quantify the effect that these failures have on vehicle control.
Nitrile rubber seals used in the fuel rail assemblies of the subject vehicles at the supply, return, and crossover tube fittings, and at the pressure regulator fail, resulting in fuel leakage in the engine compartment.also, the outlet (right) fuel rail may leak from cracks at certain mold gates in the thermoset rail material.chrysler will recall the subject vehicles and stated that it intends to replace the o-rings with fluorocarbon o-ring having greater heat resistance capability and attach reinforcements to the rail in the areas where the cracking concern has been known to occur most frequently.rails that are already cracked will be replaced by new, reinforced rails.
A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if waarranted by the circumstances.an engineering analysis clossing report IS included in the public file.
