Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Elantra, 2019-2021 Kona and Veloster vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which could result in engine damage.
Risk and remedy
Risk
A damaged engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, oil may leak onto hot exhaust components, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine, free of charge. In addition, Hyundai will deploy Piston Ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software. Owner notification letters were mailed August 24, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.

Vehicle was checked for Hyundai recall 203 in 2022. Engine suffered a catastrophic failure in March of 2024 at around 94,000 miles due to the improperly heat treated piston rings referenced in Hyundai recall 203. Dealership only replaced the short block after suffering an attempted thrown rod, resulting in debris left in the engine. A teardown of the engine was required this year to unstick the OCV 2 Valve which should have been replaced with a Long Block replacement after the catastrophic rod failure. No check engine light or oil pressure light appeared before the original catastrophic failure. Technician report confirmed there was no oil sludge sticking the valve. About 2 weeks ago I had received a P0016 and eventually a P0171 code. During this time I had a rough idle and my car would constantly try to pull itself forwards when braking or idling due to the engine constantly pulling more air and fuel through then it should. Doing my due diligence I replaced my 2 VVT Solenoids and a PCV Valve on my own before ultimately needing to bring it in.

The engine/engine management system malfunctioned. The vehicle began repeatedly stalling and shutting off while I was driving and while stopped in traffic. The vehicle is now no longer able to start and run and will need to be towed to a Hyundai dealer. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of others were put at risk because the engine shut off unexpectedly in active traffic. When the engine stalled, I lost the ability to continue accelerating and had to put the vehicle in Park and restart it. This occurred more than once and could have caused a collision, especially in intersections or congested traffic. An independent diagnostic scan was performed and showed engine misfire faults, although it did not identify a specific cylinder. The vehicle has not yet been fully inspected by Hyundai because it is currently inoperable and needs to be towed to the dealer. Hyundai has confirmed that there is an active software/campaign update associated with my VIN. I am also aware of Hyundai engine-related campaigns involving certain 2019–2021 Veloster vehicles with the 2.0L Nu engine, and my vehicle is experiencing similar symptoms, including stalling and engine shutdown. I am requesting that the vehicle be inspected by Hyundai to determine the cause. Prior to the complete no-start condition, the vehicle had symptoms including rough running, misfiring, stalling at stops, and the engine shutting off while driving. A diagnostic test confirmed misfire faults. The condition progressively worsened until the vehicle would no longer start and remain running

My spark plugs misfired

Gas was shooting out of my gas tank cap, strong gasoline smells in and out side the vehicle, popping noise coming from the back from the gas tank expanding so much it pushed up the rear seat. This puts me and others at risk of fire, explosion and toxic exposure. This problem has been reproduced. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer. A check engine light came on for a evap sensor but the next day it was gone.

ON 2/14/2024, my car started not to accelerate after the Crash Collision light came on. My car pulled off like it was a snail but picked up speed after I drove a bit. I had to put my hazard flasher lights on in order for other car not run over me, which was a major safety issues and put me and my grandson at risk of being hurt. There was no check engine light coming up just the warning flashed (only for a second) up (crash collision) and the symbol of car crashing into another vehicle with triangle symbol then it went away after awhile. I managed to make it to the car dealership but it took almost a month before they determine it was the camera and crank shaft. They repaired the vehicle from 2/14/2024 but two weeks ago the Crash Collision light flashed up again.(7/18/2024) I made it to the dealership again but now my car has been sitting for three weeks because they only have one technician. *Also, I am having a problem with the molding or plastic on my window. The molding on the window that stops rain for flowing down in your door has melted off on both window. The plastic/rubber molding is literally melting off and smearing on my window

When driving the car, it will intermittingly hesitate and as I press on the pedal the engine revs up but does not increase in speed. This has happened multiple times in the past month and is extremely dangerous. The other day I almost got hit by the car behind me and luckily there was an inlet I was able to pull into, stop and put into park, then when I put it into drive it worked again. As I came to next traffic light, it did it again and I was unable to pull over due to traffic, I put vehicle into neutral and then back into drive and it worked again to get me home. It took me 3 weeks to get an appointment with dealership and they say there is nothing wrong with it because it is not coming up on the computer. Very scared every time I need to drive it as I do not know when or where it will happen again.

In the manual car to get in reverse there is a "lock out" sling that only allows you to go in reverse when you pull up on it. When the manual stick shift goes back to neutral the lock out valve pops closed only allowing gears 1-6 The lock out is not coming down and is sticking so you think you are going into 1st gear but you are still in reverse. Basically imagine you go into reverse in a parking lot, putting it in drive and when you give the car gas it goes backwards. I have had almost 15 incidents in the last 2 weeks after I figured out what was happening. This is dangerous and has caused many close calls hitting other vehicles. I am bringing the car back to Huffhines Hyundai but only after a week of not being offered a loaner car and allowing me to drive in this car after at least 3 direct calls about the problem and the danger of having to drive the vehicle.

Then the check engine light came on. As I started my car again it would act weird and just start to hesitate kind of. I went to park and as I came back the car would not turn on. It would just keep trying to turn over at really low rpms then shut off. After that it would not turn on what so ever. Hyundai is currently in the process of looking at it.

This was do to engine problems laid out in the current recall. I didnt know about the recall, Hyundai still hasnt notified their customers. My car has 13k miles and I've had Valvoline change my oil every 3k miles (last oil change at 10k). In a matter of 3k miles my car burnt all engine oil. (there were no oil leaks). No dashboard lights came on to inform me my oil was low.

I have had 2 motor replacements from tupelo mississippi barns crossing hyundai and one I had to pay put of pocket for. I have also had to have the downpipe replaced also after my second motor replacement. I feel like this motor needs a class action lawsuit because apparently I am not the only veloster n that has had to have motor replacements and this needs to be handled asap and give me my money back all 10K

When activating the turn signal, particularly when turning left, it IS very easy to inadvertently turn off all exterior lights. If too much force or a "slapping" motion IS used, the switch can easily rotate to off, while driving.

On three of those five occasions, when accelerating in first gear from a stop at an intersection, the car screeched to a halt, as if the wheels were locked. It did not do this every time I stopped at an intersection - it was random and unpredictable. The last incident was on 8/31/20, when the mileage was approximately 350 miles. This IS a very dangerous, serious defect.

- 10217258Effective June 2, 2008, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110 (FMVSS 110) established a threshold for correcting load carrying capacity information indicated on tire placards when vehicle weight has been increased before retail sale. This limit is the lesser of 1.5% of GVWR or 100 pounds. If the total added weight exceeds the lesser of the limit, a label must be added to the driver-side B-pillar within 25mm (1 inch) of the original tire placard.

- 10217250If you are servicing an applicable vehicle with a Check Engine light on and one or more of the DTC listed on Page 2, follow the repair procedure and perform the diagnosis. If necessary, replace the High Flow electric oil pump (HF EOP) for HF EOP issues or the Dual Clutch Transmission for High Pressure electric oil pump (HP EOP) issues.
- 10213726N Vehicles are designed to maximize dynamic steering performance. In normal Ackerman steering geometry, the inner front tire turns more than the outer tire to help cornering in low-speed situations, i.e., parking lot maneuvering or sharp U-turns. N vehicles have a steering geometry optimized for performance driving. The N vehicles steering angle difference between the front wheels is reduced to enhance cornering performance. While this helps in high performance driving conditions, it can cause a higher level of tire side scrub that may create a slow shudder or vibration while turning at full steering lock. The feel is similar to turning a 4WD vehicle on dry asphalt when locked in 4WD. This shudder or vibration at parking lot speeds is normal, and no repairs should be performed.
- 10213724Hyundai is conducting a service campaign 974 to enhance the knock sensor logic with the Cylinder Noise Diagnostic System (CNDS) software update. CNDS is to detect abnormal cylinder wall scuffing or noise of the engine block before potentially severe engine damage occurs.
