The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 111,191.
Frame on drivers seat broken causing seat to list to the left side. Previously repaired by dealer who informed us at the time that it could not be repaired again, it would need to be replaced at at cost of approx $1800.00. seat currently now needs replacement. this IS a one owner vehicle and has been maintained by the dealership.
The first incident happened on june 3RD driving to work and the car just gave out. it stalled, lights came on the dashboard and car died. I was able to drift to a side street in which I tried to start the car again; however, the car would not start up. I had to get it towed to my house. after sitting for the day, I tried to start it up again and it started. I was able to make it to the advance auto near my home where they put it on the machine to see if there was a problem with the alternator and/or battery. alternator was good and the battery had some dead cells but I was told not enough for the car to just die out in the middle of driving. the next day I installed a new battery, the car started, drove onto the interstate and it stalled again (my daughter was in the car) I had to drift to service road. I had to leave the car overnight, went back this morning (wednesday)and the car started, I drove directly to the infiniti dealer and was diag.w/a bad crank position sensor. I had it repaired. I researched this problem the first day it happened and found that a recall was in place for over 620K m45's;however mine was not one of them. same part, same diag, same model, different year. This IS definitely a hazardous problem and I am seeking reimbursement for the fees I paid today along with someone looking into recalling this part in the M45 models. Its ridiculous not too if the same part had to be replaced in a 2004 with the same diag. And not a 2003. If this IS not the correct department I need to file a complaint with, I need to know who can really look into this issue. Luckily, no one was hurt in my situation but it IS bound to happen because going highway speeds with your car coming to a slow pace instantly creates a very frantic situation. *tr

This vehicle's year, make and model has a known fuel gauge issue that nissan/infiniti chose to ignore for the longest time. I thought I was one of the lucky ones because my car didn't have the issue but it happened back in september of 2011 while driving home from work. Luckily, it was only me in the car and I was able to coast onto the shoulder and call my wife to bring gas for me. *Tr
This car has a well-known issue with the fuel gauge where it no longer works correctly. this resulted in my car running out of fuel as the instrument was not working correctly to notify me of my correct fuel amount, leaving me stranded on the highway. I believe this issue IS already under investigation by the nhtsa. a recall should have been issued for this as it IS a manufacturer defect. *tr
Hello, I own a 2004 infinity M45 and I wish to file a complaint. My gas gauge doesn't function properly and it reads half full at empty which caused my wife to stall out at night!!!!! On the highway!!!!! I thought it may have been just my car at first until I googled it realizing there are thousands of identical incidents. my check engine light IS also on reading p0461 faulty fuel sensor. I hope someone can get infinity to fix this situation seeing its obvious that this IS a manufacturing issue...thanks for your time in advance... *tr
Car had no fuel despite gauge reading. traveling 65mph in left lane of crowded rush hour traffic on garden state parkway with no left shoulder. very dangerous series of right lane changes and coasting in neutral to exit traffic. no accident or injury but challenging situation that did not need to happen since we all know these gauges will fail but not when. engine has always burned oil. requires a quart after 2,000 miles to get to next oil change. *tr
Driving down the road car slowed then died. System read 1/2 tank of gas and over 150 miles left to refuel. Gas tank was empty. *kb
Purchased a 2004 infiniti M45 with 76K in may 2010. Within 2 days of buying the car the check engine light came on. I had it scanned and it said "fuel sending unit" so I replaced that part and the light went off. About 2 days later, the gas tank was about 1/4 tank shown, and I watched the fuel gauge needle move from 1/4 tank to "full" at the stop light. shortly thereafter the check engine light came back on. I did a quick "google" search and found multiple online forums discussing this topic and the real fault IS the gauge cluster. I contacted a local infiniti dealer and asked about the problem and was told "it's only happened a few times" but I had pages of other owners posting on the forums saying it had happened to them. The dealer told me it would be $800 to replace the gauge cluster, so I said "no thanks" and had my original cluster repaired with a lifetime warranty at bba remanufacturing and it has worked perfectly since september 2010. prior to repairing the original one, I purchased a brand new gauge cluster on ebay, but it was not for my model with icc and nav, so I have spent money buying a gauge cluster and repairing my original one. *tr
My fuel gauge was showing a half a tank of gas and I ran out of gas stalling in the middle of an intersection. The vehicle IS out of warranty do to time frame but well within the mileage. This continues to be a problem and I have run out of gas 2 additional times. The vehicle reads full 99% of the time but will drop down to about a half a tank every now and then (but not often), usually as it gets close to being empty. The dates and mileage for this compliant are not actually but are to my best guess. *tr
Car cut off due lack of gas, however, the fuel gauge was showing a half a tank. *tr
The fuel gauge on my 2004 infiniti stopped working. I was driving on the highway and my fuel gauge, read 2/3rds full, I ran out of gas in the middle of the road. I had to have the car towed to a repair shop, the fuel pump was replaced. To date the gauge will not go below 2/3rds no matter how much fuel IS left in the tank. *Tr
My fuel gauge read 1/3 of a tank and I ran out of gas. I bought the car used in approximately jan 2009 and I bought an extended complete powertrain warranty. they initially thought it was my float mechanism in the gas tank but finally realized it was the dash and replaced it under warranty ($50 deductible applied). my warranty expired a few miles ago (car has 90500 miles on it now) and I have begun to notice the problem again. currently I fill up after the trip odometer reaches 300 miles driven on a tank because while the gauge appears to work accurately, once it reaches 1/4 of tank left, it begins to rise and will go as high as 3/4 full. sometimes turning the car off and then back on will reset it but it will soon begin to rise again. very annoying and according to the dealer the dash costs $900+ (in 2009). ramsey infiniti of ramsey nj did the work in 2009. *tr
I ran out of fuel lost all power @ 70 mph with fuel gauge reading 1/4 tank. no accident but there was traffic in my immediate area and it was 9PM and dark. *tr
While driving vehicle the fuel gauge and fuel remaining computer showed a significant amount of fuel left, almost half a tank. after a couple of minutes of driving the car sputtered and stalled. I pulled over and tried cranking the motor. after several failed attempts I noticed that the fuel gauge was now settled on empty. checked the computer and it showed 0 miles till empty. luckily my wife was able to bring me the gas for the lawnmower. this has happened several times since this initial incident. a couple times with just my wife and children in the car. fortunately my wife's commute involves streets and avenues and no freeways or highways. I've communicated my issues on forums and blogs, turns out this IS a common problem, and so far nothing has been done by infiniti to address this. the fix comes at a ridiculous price, dealer wants to change out gauge cluster, upwards of $1,000. I've been using the keep it full method, since I like the car, of course I shouldn't have to be doing this. I decided to file this report after reading that the nhtsa was looking into the issue. thank you. *tr
I ran out of fuel on a busy highway in stop and go traffic because the fuel gauge registered full when the tank was actually empty. these gauges have major internal issues resulting in what may be a serious safety concern. *tr I'm not the only one (link below) and we are grateful to your organization to address this to the best of your abilities: http://forums.nicoclub.com/m45-fuel-gauge-problem-post-here-if-you-have-had-it-t316682.html. *tr
This car died on me on the highway when the fuel gauge said that I had a 3/4 tank of gas remaining. the car started sputtering like it had run out of gas so we added gas and it started right up. I drove it to a local infiniti dealership right away. they diagnosed the problem as in instrument cluster, which shocked me as I have never heard of an instrument cluster being responsible for a car running out of gas. I searched some online forums only to discover that there were hundreds of other people who had the same problem. had the fuel sending unit or furl pump went out, that would be understandable, but the instrument cluster going bad could have been very dangerous. since the cluster controls mileage and all the warning lights such as check engine lights, this was very scary. it seems that infiniti knows there IS a problem with these as many of the people on the forums said infiniti had paid for a new instrument cluster. with this problem being so prevalent, I think it IS very important for the nhtsa to look into. I believe it should be a recall with the number of people having problems. although my issue happened around 90,000 miles, there were many others that experienced the problem at 30 and 40,000 miles. *tr
2004 infiniti M45 ran out of gas with my gauge reading 1/4 left. Found out it IS a problem with gauge cluster which IS about $1000.00 to replace. I have found out this IS a common problem but infiniti refuses to help with the cost. There needs to be a recall. Thank you. *tt
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
In a March 5, 2012 letter to NHTSA, Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) submitted a Defect Information Report identifying a defect in the combination meter circuit board in approximately 8,120 model year 2003 through 2004 Infiniti M45 vehicles manufactured from March 7, 2002 through June 3, 2004 (Recall No. 12V-088). According to Nissan, heat generated by several components of the circuit board may cause solder cracks due to thermal shock.Open circuits created by the solder cracks may cause the fuel gauge to read higher than the actual amount of fuel remaining in the gas tank or always indicate full.Because of this condition, drivers may run out of fuel without notice, resulting in an engine stall without warning with no possibility of restart. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by Nissan as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 315 unique reports indicating an inaccurate fuel level reading while driving, including 61 that resulted in an engine stall incident (7.5 incidents per thousand vehicles). In addition, Nissan provided warranty data showing 2,525 claims for replacement of the subject component (31% claim rate).Nissan will begin owner notification in mid-April 2012.Owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified to take their vehicle to an Infiniti dealer, who will install a sub-amplifier in the combination meter to bypass the electric circuit and ensure accurate fuel level indication. This preliminary evaluation is closed. The ODI reports cited above can be viewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers (ODI Nos.): 10429412, 10427140, 10426741, 10424642, 10423199, 10418078, 10416519, 10414944, 10412053, 10408935, 10406834, 10406096, 10404206, 10404080, 10395207, 10392714, 10386134, 10380863, 10374719, 10373992, 10369584, 10365717, 10365428, 10356315, 10353972, 10351181, 10349252, 10348351, 10342961, 10342641, 10336272, 10329869, 10325399, 10324572, 10323996, 10323757, 10322403, 10320190, 10318987, 10317547, 10317273, 10317234, 10317030, 10308445.
The subject vehicles are equipped with seat-mounted, side thorax air bags for the driver and front passenger. This investigation revealed that faulty side air bag module electrical connectors located under the driver and front passenger seats can cause an interruption in the electrical circuit that will drop the input voltage below the specified range. As a result, the air bag warning lamp illuminates on the instrument panel and the affected side air bag becomes deactivated. In June 2009, Nissan conducted a service campaign to repair the defective air bag electrical connectors in the subject vehicles (both Infiniti Q45 and M45 models). In June 2010, Nissan sent a second notification concerning the 2009 campaign to owners of vehicles that have not been remedied.Nissan is now conducting a safety recall of the Q45 vehicles not remedied under the service campaign (approximately 1,349 vehicles; see NHTSA Safety Recall No. 12V-079 for further details). The M45 vehicles are not included in the recall; however, Nissan is re-notifying owners of M45 vehicles that were not remedied under the previous service campaign.See attached report for more information.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified in the Infiniti M45 vehicles at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that no safety-related defect exists. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification (ODI) numbers: 10327196 and 10402282
The subject vehicles are equipped with seat-mounted, side torso air bags for the driver and front passenger.this investigation has revealed that faulty side air bag module connectors located under the front seats can cause an interruption in the electrical current that will drop the input voltage below the specified range.as a result, the air bag warning lamp illuminates and the affected side air bag IS deactivated.the rates of complaints, field reports and warranty claims related to the subject issue are very high.for example, nissan submitted 4,853 warranty claims on 3,551 distinct subject vehicles out of 13,836 total subject vehicles.also, analyses of warranty claims indicate an increasing failure trend over time.this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea09-005) to further study the issue.
