These records cover every 2000 Land Rover Discovery II. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
10 recalls name the 2000 Land Rover Discovery II. Newest first.
Jaguar land rover north america, inc. (Land rover) IS recalling certain rear driveshaft couplings, land rover branded part number tvf100010, manufactured from april 2011 through november 2011, sold for use as service parts for certain model year 1995-1999 discovery, 1999-2004 discovery II, and 1995 range rover classic vehicles. some of the rear driveshaft…
If this increased vibration warning sign IS ignored, catastrophic failure of the drive coupling can occur. the driveshaft may detach from the vehicle while in motion resulting in loss of drive and loss of transmission park functionality, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash and/or injury.
Land rover will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected rear driveshaft couplers free of charge. the safety recall began on may 4, 2012. owners may contact jaguar land rover north america at 1-201-818-8500.
Certain sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards no. 105, "hydraulic and electric brake systems," and no. 135, "passenger car brake systems." the anti-lock braking system (ABS) modulator valve cover retaining bolts can crack due to stresses transmitted by the flexing valve covers.
This can produce an unexpected increase in stopping distance, with the potential for total loss of service braking function, which could result in a crash.
Dealers will strengthen the ABS modulator assembly valve covers and replace the retaining bolts. owner notification IS exepcted to begin during may 2004. owners should contact land rover at 1-800-637-6837.
On certain sport utility vehicles, the active cornering enhancement (ace) pump banjo bolt looses torque and allows fluid to leak past the joint.
The fluid from the pump joint can ignite, resulting in an under hood fire.
Dealers will inspect the vehicles for leakage. if no leakage IS evident, the banjo bolt will be re-tightened. if leakage IS evident, the banjo bolt and dowty washers will be replaced. owner notification IS expected to begin during may 2004. owners should contact land rover at 1-800-637-6837.
On some sport utility vehicles, the accelerator cable could have become kinked during vehicle assembly, resulting in chaffing of the cable. continued chaffing can lead to breakage of the interior cable strands.
Breakage of the cable strands can result in the throttle being stuck in the open position, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will inspect and replace the damaged cables where necessary. owner notification began march 6, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact land rover at 1-301-731-9040.
On certain sport utility vehicles, contamination of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) sensor can cause the ABS electronic control unit (ecu) to incorrectly interpret the sensor signal, resulting in inappropriate ABS activation.
This can lead to an increase in braking distance that IS unanticipated by the driver.
Dealers will install a new ecu. owner notification began march 6, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact land rover at 1-301-731-9040.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with warn industries' winch kits. a power interrupt solenoid, possibly included in the winch assembly, can develop an electrical leak path to ground.
This can lead to the solenoid experiencing excessive heat, which could potentially lead to a fire.
Dealers will call owners to arrange for an inspection time to determine if a defective power interrupt solenoid was installed. if it was, the solenoid will be replaced. owner notification began august 13, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact land rover at 1-301-731-9040.
Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles equipped with active cornering enhancement (ace). the high-pressure hydraulic pipe that runs from the ace pump to the ace valve block could fracture at its union with the pump.
This will result in a loss of hydraulic fluid. a low fluid level can subsequently result in system pump failure which will throw off the auxiliary drive belt, resulting in a loss of engine auxiliary functions (power steering assist, water pump, alternator, and air conditioning). in extreme circumstances, there IS a possibility that the hydraulic fluid could ignite, resulting in an engine compartment fire.
Dealers will install new hydraulic tubing.
Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles. the loading conditions on the vehicle's left side engine idler pulley can exceed the maximum calculated figure of the original design specification. the material of the pulley can fracture and ultimately fail. failure of the pulley material can cause the pulley to throw off the serpentine belt.
This could result in a loss of engine auxiliary functions (power steering, water pump, alternator, air conditioning and ace).
Dealers will install an improved idler pulley.

The frame of the vehicle IS rusting out. There are thousands of these trucks on the road with this issue. Land rover used inferior metals and rust protection. The safety of the vehicle in a crash IS severely compromised.
TL* the contact owned a 2000 land rover discovery II. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power and smoke filled the cabin. After stopping the vehicle, flames appeared under the hood. The fire department was called to the scene and extinguished the fire. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 land rover discovery II. While the contact was driving approximately 35 mph the brake pedal was engaged; however, the vehicle continued to accelerate. Immediately the gear was shifted into neutral while force was applied to the brake and then the emergency brake was engaged. The vehicle came to a stop and was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The technician stated the accelerator cable would need to be replaced. There was a recall related to the defect associated with nhtsa campaign ID number 02v028000 (vehicle speed control); however, the vin was ineligible under the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact planned to notify the manufacturer of the unintended acceleration. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 land rover discovery II. while driving less than 50 mph, the vehicle began making grinding noises during acceleration. while attempting to make a left turn, the vehicle made a loud noise and drove as if something dropped in the vehicle. she managed to pull off the road and turned off the vehicle. she removed the key from the ignition, but the vehicle continued to move. the contact depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle stopped; however, it began moving again once she released her foot from the brake pedal. the emergency brake was applied and the vehicle stopped. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but it would not move. she placed the vehicle into drive and reverse, but the vehicle still would not move. the vehicle was waiting to be repaired. the failure and current mileages were less than 115,000. Updated 12/02/08. *lj also the head gasket was cracked. Updated 12/03/08. *Jb the transmission failed due to front driveshaft u-joint failure. The driveshaft came apart and because it had nothing to restrain it, it bust a hole in the transmission. Updated 01/15/09. *Jb
I own a 2000 land rover discovery. currently, it has 67,000 miles on it and I purchased it at 60,000 miles. shortly after my 60,000 mile check at the dealer, the drive shaft and u joints had to be replaced. without warning, I lost power and had to pull to the side of the road. I am not in warranty, but my local mechanic stated that this IS a very common problem with land rovers (even low-mileage ones). I think land rover should recall these vehicles and fix this seemingly ubiquitous problem. *tr
I purchased my 2000 land rover discovery last february and a few days after purchase the traction control, anti lock light, ABS and down hill light came on. went to dealership and they want me to replace the ABS module over $3000 parts and labor. this IS just crazy as many others have the same issue. please let me know if I have a legitimate complaint as I found many more with this issue at sites such as http://landroverforums.com/ and others. I did replace this part with a used one but same thing. thank you in advance! *tr
In my 2000 land rover discovery 2, as apparently in many others, from time to time, usually after applying the brakes in a routine stop, an alarm chimes and the lights on the dash illuminate showing that the anti-lock braking system IS no longer working as well as the hill descent control and traction control system. This IS such a common failure that just about every discovery 2 owner knows it by its nickname, the three amigos! Clearly a failure in the ABS IS serious, especially if it results in a valve locking up and disabling the brakes as has possibly happened. The other two functions relate to use in low traction environments, such as snow, and are potentially hazardous as well. I believe this should be a recall issue. This happens every time I drive my discovery, including today (the date I listed below). *tr
Purchased vehicle in july it has been looked at and repaired 8 times. Twice to the dealer, the second time they told me it had a cracked engine block and would cost 10,000 to replace the engine(that's what I paid for the car). The first time it was there for an inspection they told me in 2002 they replaced the radiator and 2005 it was there for overheating issues. The coolant fluid would not stay in and kept leaking. It constantly overheated and when I drove it off the lot, before I even got home the check engine light came on. It's being held at a repair shop that the dealer took it to because I can't afford to pay them to fix what they say IS wrong with it and I thought the dealer was going to fix it. I myself have spent over 1,000 on it in repairs and have been riding the bus for 3 weeks now. *tr
While driving approximately 25-30 mph, the front drive shaft on my 2000 land rover discovery II failed causing immediate loss of propulsion. The vehicle IS currently waiting to be repaired as a new front drive shaft, including universals and flanges, needs to be installed. *jb
The ABS, tc and dhc lights all came on at the same time. *tr
ABS, hill decent control (hdc) and traction control (tc) warning lights came on simultaneously
My wife was driving our 2000 land rover discovery II (with 50,000 miles) on md highway 15 with my three children when she heard a loud noise and the vehicle came to a slow stop. the car was still running, but would not go into gear. she called for a tow and we had the car diagnosed at a local mechanic. when I found out what happened I was absolutely astounded. the vehicles universal joint failed causing the drive shaft to fall from the transfer case and crack the transmission. this car had been serviced and cared for extremely well-it was considered to be in excellent condition. a car with 50,000 miles should not have the universal joint fail. the mechanic was very clear in stating it was definitely a manufacturing flaw. at the time of the failure, my wife was on the off ramp traveling at 15 miles an hour-if this would have happened at normal highway speed, the outcome would have been quite different; I am lucky no body was hurt. I immediately had it towed to land rover bethesda where I was sure land rover would assist in the repair of such a catastrophic failure. this failure was diagnosed at the land rover dealer as extremely odd and they could not find any reason for the failure. land rover also refused to take any responsibility for the failure. they refused to help with any financial support and showed no concern for my families safety or the safety of any of their customers. this vehicle has a 50,000 warranty, although it was past the 4 years-land rover should have backed up their product and investigated the issue more thoroughly. I was shocked. I have been a loyal land rover customer for 15 years, but I have absolutely no faith in their product after this incident. I will never purchase another land rover again. I am very concerned for any families who own this year and make of vehicle and hope that this will be investigated further. I feel that this could be a possible recall item. *nm
I have a 2000 land rover discovery, which I love and despite that my vehicle has been in the shop many times, (almost every few months) I still love my truck, so I bought my husband one also, he has a 2001 land rover, but just recently I had to have my vehicle towed to the dealership. and I was told my engine sized and I have to replace the heads or the complete engine, this was all caused from a coolant leak in my throttle body, and the vehicle never gave a warning that my engine was running to hot or to cold, that IS why there IS a gage on the dash to provide this information. And now my husband has a 2001 land rover discovery and he IS have the same problems, vehicle only has 79,000 miles on it . And no-one at land rover will help. I am so very upset. *Jb
While driving to work, my seat heater in my leather seat burned through the leather resulting in burn damage to my clothing and my skin on my left leg. *nm
ABS, hill decent control (hdc) and traction control (tc) warning lights came on simultaneously. Web search indicates that a lot of people with 1999 and 2000 land rovers have this problem. Land rover says there IS no recall. *nm
Faulty slabs unit causing my abs/tc/hdc lights to come on. *nm
The "spiral cassette" on my 2000 land rover discovery has failed three times (about every 30,000 miles or two years). when this happens, the srs light comes on and I have been told that my airbag srs IS not functional. I have had it replaced and not "tested" the air bag. it has now failed again. this seems to be a defective design or consistently defective manufacturing which leads to failure of a vital safety system. I would like you to investigate to determine the extent of this problem and whether or not a recall IS necessary. I believe the part IS "yrc100350 rotary cassette" *jb
2000 land rover discovery II. 1ST I had the service engine soon light on and after spending almost $600.00 to extinguish the light, I drove the vehicle for (4) days, now all the lights are on. I checked on a land rover forum and they said the ABS / tc lights are an ongoing problem with this vehicle and there should be a recall. Everyone IS spending a fortune. My land rover just came out of warranty (of course!). *jb
Land rover disco 2 2000 ABS light comes on, and the ABS becomes inoperative. I did speak with a mechanic in my province and they have a lot of problem with this part they changed many of them charging the clients. There IS a website specialized on land rover and many many many have the same problem. Yes it IS a default in my point of view. *Jb
I have a problem with the ABS system on my 2000 land rover discovery. from what I've read, this IS a very common problem that has not been covered by any warranty or recall. the repair IS over $700 to be fixed properly at a dealership. land rover should stand behind their product more, and fix this problem under a recall since it seems to be such a common problem. *Jb
ABS, traction control & hill decent control functions fail simultaneously. ABS failure on a 2000 land rover discovery IS significant. *jb
ABS tc HD lights all went on and the ABS braking system IS not working correctly. *nm
No noticable events leading to failure... ABS / hdc / trac failure on a 2000 land rover discovery series II. traction control, ABS and hill descent control do not function or function at a diminished level. three lights remain lit on the dash. I do not know what can be done to resolve this unsafe and unexeptable problem. *nm
My wife and I took our '00 land rover discovery II to anza borrego, ca for camping. To get to the campsite we had to take unpaved trails of certain difficulty rating. Most of which were rated 4-5 with 10 being the most difficult. All of a sudden, the abs/tc/hdc warning lights came on particularly on certain sections of the trail where there were inclines, ruts and gulleys. We got stuck so many times and even at one point almost tipped one side as only one wheel has power and all three were rather stationary. I couldn't get past trails that even some stock vehicle with adequate clearance can manage and had to be pulled and winched out. On some occasions the vehicle almost slid backwards as three wheels would not spin. I believe this IS a safety issue that needs to be investigated and it never happens when on paved roads or highways other than the lights remain lit but all four wheels have traction. *nm
On 7/1/05 I was driving my 2000 land rover discovery series II on the left lane of I-75 s, in clear weather, on dry pavement, near the 68 mile marker in kentucky(copassengers-my wife & son) enroute to tennessee. Around 1.45 pm traffic ahead started slowing down. I was driving at about 60 mph, and applied the brake; the vehicle immediately started fishtailing and swerving badly. I did not feel the pulsing of the ABS; the vehicle swerved across the right lane & shoulder, hit the guard rail on the right, bounced back, & tipped over on to the right (passenger side) on the shoulder. My wife sustained injuries to her right hand & arm due to the tipping over of the vehicle and the shattering of the front passenger window glass, & was taken to a local hospital by ems ambulance. She will undergo hand surgery. The vehicle sustained serious body damage and was towed to a local towing yard. it was determined not drivable by my auto insurance company appraiser(the vehicle IS still capable of starting and moving forward at this time). we (my wife and I ) informed land rover north america in maryland of the incident; they said they could not send anyone out to examine it. They suggested we contact any local land rover dealership with a service center for a detailed examination of the vehicle. The (closest available) lexington land rover dealer/service center refused, citing conflict of interest! The vehicle remains in the towing yard, awaiting a move to a salvage yard soon. No other vehicles/people were involved.we got back home to pennsylvania after the accident. We would like to find out if the ABS failure contributed to this accident. Land rover has not made any attempt to contact our auto insurance company, or showed any interest in tackling this problem, other than giving us an address to write to. Therefore, nothing has been done to address/correct this problem so far.
