Recalls
2 recalls name the 2004 Land Rover Discovery II. Newest first.
Jaguar land rover north america, inc. (Land rover) IS recalling certain rear driveshaft couplings, land rover branded part number tvf100010, manufactured from april 2011 through november 2011, sold for use as service parts for certain model year 1995-1999 discovery, 1999-2004 discovery II, and 1995 range rover classic vehicles. some of the rear driveshaft…
Risk and remedy
Risk
If this increased vibration warning sign IS ignored, catastrophic failure of the drive coupling can occur. the driveshaft may detach from the vehicle while in motion resulting in loss of drive and loss of transmission park functionality, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash and/or injury.
Remedy
Land rover will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected rear driveshaft couplers free of charge. the safety recall began on may 4, 2012. owners may contact jaguar land rover north america at 1-201-818-8500.
Certain sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards no. 105, "hydraulic and electric brake systems," and no. 135, "passenger car brake systems." the anti-lock braking system (ABS) modulator valve cover retaining bolts can crack due to stresses transmitted by the flexing valve covers.
Risk and remedy
Risk
This can produce an unexpected increase in stopping distance, with the potential for total loss of service braking function, which could result in a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will strengthen the ABS modulator assembly valve covers and replace the retaining bolts. owner notification IS exepcted to begin during may 2004. owners should contact land rover at 1-800-637-6837.

Vehicle in motion traveling at approx 5-7 mph. Zip code 06615 when 3 ABS sensor lights went on 1. Hill descent 2. ABS 3.traction control. Recent ABS shuttle switch replaced for same reported sensor lights failure. Vehicle was not on an incline and at an intersection and light. After passing intersection cars were entering street from side. Tried to slow down as car pulled out and could not. Another car pulled out.. Tried to move around car since car would not slow down. Upon putting more pressure anti lock vibration began and car had sensation of ' locking up ' on a wheel and felt as if the car was either sliding or 'not having any brake' control. And steering seemed to be affected. Had to cross oncoming car lane to veer away from cars pulling into my line as car was not handling properly. Had to go off the far left side of road onto sidewalk, grass of a private residence lawn and went through a fence. When I took my foot off the brake and began to brake again the sensation was as if pressure was not pumped into brake line and was able to then stop the car. This IS the second time I could not stop the vehicle from antilock failure. The first time I thought it was weather related road conditions however I was traveling slowly approaching a red light and had to go through the light because car would not stop. The car has significant damage. Four other cars were avoided as I lost control failure of brakes. Wheel sensor speed and steering. No one injured. Vehicle was on main street at lunch time when there was activity on main street. 3 recalls for this model on record. 1 recall for this car was drive shaft related failure and vibration in advance. I experienced this and the drive shaft did brakedown on a small road causing car to go out of control. Fireman 1ST responder helped me to safety. Driveshaft recall for 2004 model was in 2012. Police report: 16-10673.

Engine failure occurred at 63,000 miles. I was driving locally near my home when a popping sound came from the engine. it resulted in the engine light coming on and the engine shutting off at approx 30mph. the engine shut off led to a loss of power steering in the truck. luckily, I was able to gain control of the steering manually and pull the truck to the side of the road. fortunately, I was not on the highway when this happened otherwise it may have been a completely different outcome. the dealer (land rover of parsippany) examined the vehicle and determined that engine (complete engine failure) had to be replaced. a number of theories were thrown around : low oil (changed every 3,000), sleeves dropped (no clue what that means), or age (my favorite since it was 2004 and I used it purely to go to the train and on weekends) but no matter what the truck IS totalled w/o an engine. my biggest concern at this point IS that this issue IS something that IS known but not being communicated to other owners. engine failure w/o power steering IS simply troubling and scary at the same time. if you have a disco that IS of the same age / mileage please bring it into your local dealer for a diagnostic service. to the nhtsa, please review this problem w/ land rover discovery II to SE if it IS pervasive or it IS just me.

TL* the contact owns a 2004 land rover discovery II. the contact stated that the engine would exhibit an unusual ticking noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer six times while under warranty and various repairs were done but the failure persisted. The dealer advised that the ticking noise was the sleeve on the number two cylinder slipping and would eventually cause the engine to seize up. the dealer recommended replacing the engine. The manufacturer advised they would assist with partial repairs. The failure mileage was 13,000 and the current mileage was 61,250.

Failure of antilock service brakes. Defect first identified in march 2005, when hdc, abs,tc and red brake light came on. Vehicle taken to land rover of wood bridge where they diagnosed a loose connector. These lights came on intermittently over the last several years, but went out on their own usually. In late 2008 the lights came back on and stayed on. Car taken back to lr in dec. 17, 2008 with 38805 miles. Failure of the ABS modulator was diagnosed, and warranty coverage was denied, despite what was a failure to diagnose and correct the problem in 2005. Repair was to be $3000 plus labor. I subsequently learned that there have been recalls issued for this problem and it appears the my vin number falls within the range. However lr refuses to cover this repair. I have made 2 attempts with customer service to have lr repair this defect under warranty coverage without success. I have also noted that there are other similar complaints for the same problem and lr continues to avoid their responsibility to have safe vehicles on the road. *Tr

Failure of ABS system while driving. 3-4 times per week while city driving the abs/hill descent/traction control warning lights and chimes come on. the system typically resets after stopping and re-starting the vehicle (sometimes requires neutral start to reset). this IS similar to a failure I had in a 1999 model that required over $3,000 in repairs to replace a failed ABS pump. land rover insists that there IS no fault code left on the obc after these events, but all indications point to a systemic and on-going problem with the series of ABS pumps used over the years. this seems to be an important safety system in the vehicle, but lr seems to have no interest in addressing it. *Tr

I am the owner of a 2004 landrover discovery with approximately 60,000 miles on it. I have recently had intermittent failure of the ABS modulator on my vehicle. the ABS modulator controls the anti-lock brake system, the hill descent control and the traction control. when the ABS modulator fails, those systems are no longer available. while turning off the vehicle and restarting the vehicle will reset the system, the ABS modulator frequently occurs while the vehicle IS moving. there IS no warning for the failure, nor IS there any pattern for the failure. the vehicle was in the dealer service center for this problem last week and this week and the diagnosis was for a replacement of the ABS modulator. the ABS modulator IS a $2,800.00 part, with the total cost, including labor resulting in a bill for $3,500.00 to repair this safety issue. my family budget does not presently allow me to make this repair. in dealing the service center, I was informed that landrover IS aware of the failure of the ABS modulator and has issued at least 2 technical service bulletins for a less costly repair of same. however, I was informed that the success rate for those less costly repairs was exceedingly low. in conducting additional research on this topic, I found that this issue affects all landrover discovery's produced from 1999-2004, some landrover range rover models and some other landrover models. landrover refuses to address the issue and refuses to make the necessary repairs to make this important safety components of their vehicles reliable. it would seem the nhtsa IS ideally suited to make this company address safety defects in their vehicles. please contact me should additional information be necessary. *tr

I had the tailgate of my land rover discovery open as I put in my car seats. the tailgate was open all of the way and in the locked position. my daughter stood at the tailgate looking into the rear of the car. a combination of me moving in the car and the wind, the door began to close. the door IS very heavy and the momentum even made it heavier as the car was on a slight decline. the door did not stay in the locked position and began to swiftly close. my daughter's head IS right above the closing of the door. if the door would have slammed, she would have had massive head injury and or possible worse, decapitated. it has done this many times. the door doesn't stay open. I have been hit myself and it has left huge marks on my body. the dealer said it was meant to be this way. I disagree, especially after tonight's incident which could have been fatal. *jb

My name IS [xxx] and I am writing to you in regards to the service of a vehicle done recently at the land rover in encino, ca. On approximately may 17, 2004 my vehicle was dropped off in order for the transmission box to be replaced. Nearly a week later I was told that the needed part was back ordered and was told that the vehicle had to be picked up immediately. I then expressed my concern to a service representative by the name of [xxx], that due to the vehicle lunging forward at times and the possibility of getting into a collision, that I preferred that the vehicle be left there until the service was completely. I was told however that despite such occurrences, the vehicle cold not be left there and had to picked up. on approximately june 10, 2004, after being notified that the required part had come in, I dropped of the vehicle in order for the part to be replaced. The odometer reading was noted and the vehicle was taken in. However on june 14, 2004 the odometer showed an exceeded mileage of nearly sixty miles over the documented invoice. I notified the service department via telephone who only stated that the odometer must have been incorrectly documented and that the technician who had performed the service, only had driven the vehicle no more than six miles. Within one hour later, my brother went to the servicing department and spoke with [xxx] who stated that she as well as other individuals were the ones who drove the vehicle for that exceeded mileage.*ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *tr

On june 16, 2005, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe05-034) to investigate alleged stop lamp (brake) switch failures in certain model year (my) 2004 land rover discovery series II vehicles.on october 14, 2005, the investigation was upgraded to an engineering analysis and the scope expanded to include certain my 2002 through 2005 freelander vehicles that use a substantially similar self-adjusting stop lamp switch furnished by the same supplier, methode electronics malta, ltd. (Methode).in september 2003, methode moved the production of an internal switch component, known as the slider mechanism, from a validated plastic injection-molding tool (?cavity 1?) to another tool (?cavity 2?) that had not been used before to produce parts for land rover.sliders from cavity 2 may be characterized by poor fill, lack of definition in the slider teeth and dimensional instability.consequently, the slider may be unable to restrain improper movement of the plunger during normal brake pedal operation.this may cause the switch to fall out of adjustment, thus significantly reducing the effort required to energize the switch and illuminate the stop lamps.?cavity 2? Switches were installed in approximately 8,763 discovery subject vehicles built from december 2003 through may 2004 and approximately 3,915 freelander subject vehicles built from october 2003 through may 2004.additionally, stop lamp switches in certain my 2002 through 2005 freelander subject vehicles may slip out of adjustment as a result of switch damage due to an incorrect setting procedure during vehicle manufacture or as a result of switch mounting bracket flex.analysis of all available data indicates the predominant failure mode IS constant stop lamp illumination.other reported consequences of stop lamp switch maladjustment include inoperative automatic transmission gear selector/brake pedal shift interlock, inoperative speed (cruise) control, and telltale illumination as described in technical service bulletin (tsb) no. Lt206-001 dated october 28, 2004 issued by the manufacturer to land rover dealers in the united kingdom (uk).to date, odi IS aware of 77 non-duplicative complaints that allege stop lamp switch failure on the subject vehicles (10 complaints on my 2004 discovery, 45 on my 2002 freelander, 19 on my 2003 freelander, and 3 on my 2004 freelander vehicles).additionally, 4,595 discovery and 13,370 freelander subject vehicles have experienced one or more warranty claims to replace the stop lamp switch.of the 5,170 warranty claims paid to replace stop lamp switches on discovery subject vehicles, approximately 31% occurred before the vehicle was sold new and approximately 88% occurred within the first 12 months of vehicle service.the warranty trend on discovery subject vehicles IS in decline with 3,545 claims paid in calendar year (cy) 2004, 1,303 claims paid in cy 2005, and 322 claims paid in cy 2006 through september 28, 2006 (which IS when odi last received updated warranty claims data from land rover), and it appears that the alleged defect on discover subject vehicles has been remedied through warranty repairs.however, odi analysis of the manufacturer?s warranty and complaint records indicates the failure trend on certain freelander subject vehicles IS ongoing.by letter dated february 2, 2007, land rover has notified odi that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall no. 07V-041) to replace defective stop lamp switches in approximately 33,247 my 2002 through 2005 freelander vehicles built at the solihull, uk assembly plant from september 5, 2001 through may 19, 2005. On june 16, 2005, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation to investigate alleged stop lamp (brake) switch failures in certain model year (my) 2004 land rover discovery series II vehicles.odi sent a letter to the manufacturer on june 24, 2005 requesting information about these and other land rover vehicles.analysis of manufacturer data shows a high failure frequency for stop lamp switches on subject vehicles manufactured from approximately december 2, 2003 through may 13, 2004.all 8,763 subject vehicles built during this period were equipped with a self-adjusting stop lamp switch supplied by methode electronics malta, ltd. (Methode).in september 2003, methode moved the production of an internal switch component, known as the slider mechanism, from a validated plastic injection molding tool (?cavity 1?) to another tool (?cavity 2?) that had not been used before to produce parts for land rover.sliders from cavity 2 may be characterized by poor fill and lack of definition in the slider teeth.consequently, the slider IS unable to restrain improper movement of the plunger during normal brake pedal operation.this causes the switch to fall out of adjustment, thus significantly reducing the effort required to energize the switch and illuminate the stop lamps.the most common symptom described by complainants and documented in warranty claim records IS stop lamps that remain constantly illuminated.documents provided by the manufacturer indicate that certain my 2002 through 2005 land rover freelander vehicles use a substantially similar stop lamp switch that also suffers from a high failure frequency.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-016) to further study the frequency, scope and safety consequences of the alleged defect.
