Certain cardone master cylinders with part numbers 10-2925, 10-2987, 10-2987mza, 10-3083, 11-3015, 11-3042, 11-3044, 11-3045, 11-3047, 11-3064, and 11-3156, and with date codes lower than dca7078 sold as replacement equipment for use on the vehicles listed above. the seal on master cylinder can fail and leak brake fluid.

Risk
Loss of brake fluid can result in poor braking performance, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
Remedy
Cardone will notify owners and offer to repurchase any defective master cylinders. the recall began during april 2007. owners can contact cardone at 1-800-777-4780.
On certain passenger vehicles, a combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing, and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light and the subsequent onset of limp home modes.

Remedy
Dealers will install the current software upgrade onto the involved vehicles. the recall began on december 29, 2006. owners may contact volvo at 1-800-458-1552.
On certain passenger and sport utility vehicles, over an extended period of time, the headlight switch may cease to function.
Risk and remedy

The head lights may not operate properly which could result in intermittent or no headlight function. this could impair a driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
On vehicles with an original oem switch, dealers will replace the headlight switch. all other vehicles will be inspected to determine if the switch has een damaged and replace only if necessary. the recall began on january 24, 2005. owners should contact volvo at 1-800-458-1552.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. there could be inadequate contact between the bulb and socket which could cause the front turn signal not to function as designed.

This would fail to warn an approaching driver that the vehicle IS turning and could lead to a crash.

The contact confirmed that there was no crash involved to have caused the air bag to deploy. The driver sustained a minor left arm injury that required medical attention via the hospital. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 271,000.

Volvo has determined the etm's in these models to be defective but continue to be allowed to not take responsibility for their workmanship. They have not had to take financial responsibility for their accidents, incidents caused by their defective parts. The consumer who has bought the cars, trusting the volvo names IS being made to pay for trusting them. The put all of these restrictions in place to keep from fixing what they. Messed up initially. They just want to replace software, if your car breaks in time and you know about the recall. we, the consumer should not be allowed to be forced to take monetary responsibility for the parts, work, or the inconvenience to fix this issue. We like our cars and that should not be used against us. We haven't even addressed the responsibility for deaths and accidents connected with this defect, like chevrolet. *tr

The vehicle failed to slow down and crashed into the rear passenger side of another vehicle. The vehicle continued to accelerate and then crashed into a utility pole. There were no injuries reported. A police report was filed. The vehicle was completely destroyed and towed to the residence. In march of 2009 the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign ID number 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000. The vin was not available.

I pulled off the road and there was smoke coming out the tail pipe and under the hood, also there was oil all over the place. there was still no warning light indicator and the car was now idling rough and skipping so I drove 1 mile to a service station. I had the car towed 80 miles back to my home. the mechanic informed met that I will have to replace the engine which only has 100,700 miles. It will cost $4500 to replace the engine with a used engine, $6000-$7000 if rebuilt. I take very good care of the car and do not understand how something like this could happen with no warning. it could have been very dangerous if I was in a high traffic area. *Tr

The vehicle was taken to volvo dealership in june 2005 to be checked. He was told at that time the throttle body needed to be cleaned. The vehicle ran fine until september, 22,005. the vehicle was taken to a volvo mechanic, and the throttle body was replaced . The vehicle was under warranty at that time .then, on november 12, 2005 the contact was pulling out of a parking place and the throttle body failed again. This, in turn, almost caused a serious accident. On november 14, 2005 he took the car back to the mechanic, and he was told that the throttle body that was replaced in september 2005 was defective from volvo. The vehicle IS now at a repair shop having the throttle body replaced again. The vehicle IS no longer under warranty.*ak updated 12/22/2005. *nm

2000 volvo C70 while driving at 40-45 mph, the ets light illuminated on the dash and the vehicle lost power. the engine continued running, but was significantly missing and provided no power. had to engage emergency flashers and coast out of traffic. after turning car off and restarting, the problem went away. the car was fine for the remainder of the day, driving ~100 miles. *jb

Failure of engine throttle control module (etm) in my 2000 volvo C70 coupe. failure resulted in sudden loss of speed and steering assist when driving, as well as, sudden and complete stall without warning. this happened twice, 10/20/05 (ets light did not remain on after switching the ignition off and then on again--see comment below) and 10/22/05. car was taken into volvo specialist repair shop for repair (repair cost IS approximately $1000). repair shop advised that this was a common problem with 1999 and 2000 volvos as this was the first 2 years that volvo had gone to an etm, and it "just wasn't right". I have been advised that prior to the introduction of the etm, when a cable was used from the gas pedal to the throttle, the volvo service manual advised that the throttle should be cleaned as part of regular servicing of a vehicle. however, the volvo service manual does not indicate that the etm be cleaned as part of servicing. luckily, no one was following closely when I had the etm failures; otherwise, I would have been rear-ended. this was especially disconcerting on the second failure as my 15-year old son was driving when the failure occurred. please note that the volvo owner's manual advises that if the ets light comes on, "...there IS a fault in the engine control system and driveability will be affected. switch the ignition off and then on again. if the light remains on, the system should be inspected by an authorized volvo retailer." what they don't tell you IS that it should be taken in regardless (i.e., whether or not the light remains on), as it IS dangerous to drive if a fault has occurred in the engine control system. The problems with the etm are an accident waiting to happened, and the nhtsa should issue a recall of this part on all 1999 and 2000 volvos. any reluctance of volvo to agree to this post haste would be poor corporate stewardship on behalf of ford motor company, the owner of volvo cars. *jb

The consumer took the vehicle to dealer. They placed the vehicle on a diagnostic machine and discovered that throttle control module failed. Repairs would cost the consumer about $1000.00. *ak *jb

I waited a few minutes and it started back up and went on my way. this happened a number of times until I reached my destination. when I took the car into the shop they replaced the electronic throttle sensor. since then I have been having electrical issues. the car would not start after stopping at a convenient store, I got a jump start. also the trunk light has been coming on, and my car alarm has been going off randomly. *jb

On november 14, 2006 volvo submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning etm failures in model year (my) 1999 through 2001 volvo models (not including the S40 and V40), my 2002 S60 and V70 with naturally aspirated engines and my 2002 v70s.according to volvo, ?a combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light and the subsequent onset of limp home modes.volvo further stated that,this resulted in a high number of these vehicles going into limp home mode without need.?volvo indicated that this was the most severe consequence of an etm fault in the subject vehicles.the recall remedy IS a software upgrade introduced by volvo on march 16, 2006 in a customer satisfaction program.at the time of the notification 161,202 vehicles of the population of 331,301 had already had the software uploaded and were therefore not included in the population count of the recall. Odi?s analysis of complaints to odi and volvo, volvo field reports and warranty data found that etm failure could result in (1) engine stall; (2) mechanical limp mode; (3) lunging forward during low-speed driving maneuvers; and (4) faltering during high speed merges or when crossing traffic.odi identified 12 crashes related to etm failure, with 6 caused by lunging incidents, 3 caused by stalling incidents, 2 caused by mechanical limp mode and 1 from the faltering condition.odi's analysis of complaint data and information obtained from consumer interviews identified 1,289 incidents with safety related consequences (389.1 per 100,000 vehicles), including 479 involving engine stall (144.6 per 100,000 vehicles) and 729 involving mechanical limp mode (220.0 per 100,000 vehicles).odi's analysis of warranty claim narrative text shows at least 14,965 warranty claims with codes indicating an etm fault resulting in vehicle operation in mechanical limp mode (4.5% of the subject vehicles). Volvo?s recall addresses odi?s safety concerns with etm failures.odi will continue to monitor the subject vehicles to determine if additional action IS required.this engineering analysis IS closed.

Pe05-041 was opened on july, 26, 2005, based on 136 consumer complaints to odi alleging throttle control malfunctions in the subject vehicles.odi has now received 591 complaints of etm failures which allege symptoms with potential safety related consequences.these include allegations of engine stall, vehicle surging forward without accelerator input, vehicle hesitation upon acceleration and sudden and unexpected transition into reduced performance operation (limp mode).volvo submitted over 2,900 complaints concerning the etm in the subject vehicles during pe05-041.odi's preliminary analysis of a sample the volvo complaints identified approximately 55 percent with one or more of the symptoms described above.odi IS continuing its assessment of the information contained in the volvo complaints. In november 2005, to resolve an investigation by the california air resources board, volvo announced that it would extend the warranty coverage to 10 years / 200,000 miles for the etm in approximately 356,000 model year 1999 through 2002 passenger cars sold in the united states and canada.under volvo's policy, vehicles that experience etm failures will receive a variety of repairs including etm cleaning, reprogramming the engine control module and/or replacement of the etm. This investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-021) to continue to assess the safety consequences of etm failures in the subject vehicles.

On august 23, 1999, volvo notified nhtsa that it would conduct a safety recall (99v235) on certain 1997 model year (my) 850 vehicles and certain 1998 s/v/c 70 series vehicles for failure of the headlight switch.the defect report stated in part: operation of the headlight switch, over an extended period of time, can result in inconsistent operation of the switch.volvo's remedy for this recall was to replace the headlight switch.this recall query investigation was opened on june 8, 2004, based on 13 reports of headlight failure on 1998 and 1999 s/v/c 70 series vehicles that were not included in the earlier recall.by letter of october 18, 2004, volvo has notified the agency that it will now conduct a safety recall of an additional 97,000 my 1998 through 2000 s70/v70/v70xc and C70 vehicles built from june 5, 1997 through january 11, 2000. Volvo dealers will replace the original equipment master light switch with one of an improved design. See safety recall 04v504 for details.

- 10167887Technical Journal TITLE : The Error Frame Finder (EFF) can be an aid in fault tracing intermittent CAN network problems by providing a visible indication of error frames that are being transmitted on the network when the fault becomes active. The advantage of using the EFF function is that error frames are usually transmitted on the network before a vehicle symptom can occur. Hence, if the fault is very intermittent in nature, it may be possible, for example, to induce the wiring fault for a short duration by manipulating the vehicle harnesses and connectors. The electrical fault will occur and be detected by the EFF without ever having a vehicle symptom appear. The instructions for setting up the tool have been simplified.
