I want to make you aware of a very serious car accident that my mother had on 9-5-18. She was driving her 2000 volvo S80 when her car began to accelerate on its own. She was not able to control the car. My mom had her foot on the brake but that did not stop the vehicle. Unfortunately, at that point the car was out of control hitting and banging up all the cars around it. Then the car finally smashed into another car stopping the out of control car. My mom was seriously hurt and taken to the hospital. She had emergency surgery to repair her aorta that tore from the crash. She also broke her sternum. I am devastated by what happened to my mom. I feel that it IS extremely important that you and volvo are made aware of this tragic situation that occurred by this volvo S80.
Vehicle has the smell of fuel. The 2001-2005 models have a recall for this same issue because of the plastic on the fuel pump flange cracking. Many owners of the 2000 models are reporting this issue. The fuel pump IS the same used on the 2000 year model as the 2001-2005 so the 2000 should be part of the recall also. The smell of fuel IS not just unpleasant but dangerous. I have a 11 month old son who rides in my car and it would be tragic if something happened to my family or someone else. You can search google and see many other owners reporting issues in the 2000 model volvo S80. Please do something about this. Thank you! *tr
I was driving and my car lights and all the electronic stop working and turn off

My driver seat belt just locked up and I am unable to get it to release. All of the housing inside car appears to be cracking. I have had the two front windows repaired over and over again. And now I can't even let my front windows down. I have also paid to have the throttle body repaired. Not to mention how many times I have had to replace the O2 sensors. *tr
Within the past few days, I've gotten many complaints about the foul smell of gasoline lingering on my vehicle. Sure enough, I take it to a mechanic and the fuel pump IS visibly moist on the exterior from an obvious fuel leakage. I researched "volvo S80 fuel pump" and found a recall IS in place. The recall starts from 2001 models and ranges up to 2005 models and IS due to the material used in the fuel pump (recall campaign 09v-483). Since my vehicle IS a 2000 model, my local volvo dealership said "i do not meet the qualifications". My concern IS if the material used in the assembly of the fuel pump changed from S80 2000 to 2001 models. I would like to be notified what material was used for S80 2000 models versus the material used for S80 2001 models and make sure that the material for S80 2000 models "may not develop cracks due to exposure to certain environmental conditions and varying fuel quality" as does the S80 2001 material. Thank you very much. *tr
Component: fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump there IS a strong smell of raw gasoline both inside and outside the vehicle. gasoline IS dripping from the fuel system directly below the position of the fuel pump. the vehicle IS registered in sarasota, florida, a warm weather climate. all indications point to recall number R220. this recall begins with the 2001 volvo S-80 and therefore does not include my 2000 model year. I contend that the recall should be expanded to include 2000 model year volvos. v483000 vehicles in warm weather climates may develop a fuel leak car recalls volvo S80 recall 09v483000 vehicles in warm weather climates may develop a fuel leak engine, january 15, 2010 repairpal expert overview our quick take: vehicles operated in certain warm weather climates may develop a fuel smell and/or leak. original recall from the nhtsa model year(s): 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 mfr's report date: january 15, 2010 nhtsa campaign ID number: 09v483000 nhtsa action number: pe09039. *tr

While stopping or turning at low speeds the cars idle speed will fluctuate from a complete stop up to 1100 rpms. Most of the time between 500 & 1100 rpms ! When the car stops running while I am trying to turn a corner , the power steering of coarse does not work and its hard to steer it. I did take it to a volvo dealer, & they said it needed a new throttle sensor & computer software change, & it would cost me $2400. I can't find out if any of the recalls have ever been done #R155, R146, nhtsa I.D. #626114 & I.D. #10018801. the previous owner had the car for three years & did not receive and recalls notices. Most of the time the car runs fine, I have driven it over 40,000 miles now with the check eng. Light on & off. The check engine light will stay on for a day or too & go off for three or four days at a time. I would really like to know if any of the recalls have ever been done to this car. *tr

This car been parked since mid may 2012 with 2 problems, cvvt & inlet hoses. I had the battery charged & the inlet hose fix, so it could go into the shop for inspection. aug.13 I put the plates on it & drove it for the 1ST time at night to drop it off at the shop for inspection. Which I had spoken with 2 days earlier.. The morning of aug 14, I call the shop and was informed my car had a fuel pump leak. I than call the volvo corp. Cause it had issue a recall for the fuel pump. Just to be told it wasn't on my car & I'm responsible for the repair.. This car gave no warning or smell of gas about a defected fuel pump. This wasn't around the corner drive for me. it a blessing cause this could've been bad...as a woman I like to know, how it went bad just sitting there?.. *tr

While driving my 2000 volvo S80 about 20-25mph all the sudden lost power to all my gauges, dashboard lights, power windows, & power locks. The radio was the only device that was working. The following message was displayed srs-airbag service urgent. I have noticed a difference on my brake pedal that it does not respond as well as it use too there IS a short delay when stepped on. My 2000 S80 T6 stalls in traffic and loses power while driving. Whenever I stop at a traffic light, I'll have to step harder on the accelerator in order to avoid the vehicle behind me from hitting my car.sometimes it jerks so bad I feel that engine may fall off.there's no engine light on or anything. I have called volvo and was told the problem IS etm but has been replaced on my car according to their records. I have taken the car to the dealership and had different components tested out and fixed but that did not solve the problem. *tr
My 2000 S80 volvo has a defective throttle body and causes my car to completely shut off. *tr
Since I bought my car from the volvo dealer last winter it has stalled on me at low rpms it also surges forward almost causing me to hit cars in front of me I brought it back to them and the dealers told me its normal because its fuel injected and they wont do anything about it.. This IS very dangerous. *tr
Driving on freeway at night, experienced a sudden loss of power. engine check light came on. fortunately coasted to a stop on an exit ramp. upon stopping observed smoke coming through the edges of the hood. turned off the ignition and exited the car. noticed a flame under the engine compartment. within one minute the front end of the car burst into flames and burned in a bright yellow fireball estimated to be 20 feet high. it burned until the fire trucks arrived 20 minutes later. the heat was extremely intense. The hood vaporized, metal parts of the engine melted, tires exploded. car had a full tank of gas and strongly suspect malfunction of fuel system. had we been trapped in the car on the freeway, there could have been four fatalities. *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On november 14, 2006 volvo submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning etm failures in model year (my) 1999 through 2001 volvo models (not including the S40 and V40), my 2002 S60 and V70 with naturally aspirated engines and my 2002 v70s.according to volvo, ?a combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light and the subsequent onset of limp home modes.volvo further stated that, this resulted in a high number of these vehicles going into limp home mode without need.?volvo indicated that this was the most severe consequence of an etm fault in the subject vehicles.the recall remedy IS a software upgrade introduced by volvo on march 16, 2006 in a customer satisfaction program.at the time of the notification 161,202 vehicles of the population of 331,301 had already had the software uploaded and were therefore not included in the population count of the recall. Odi?s analysis of complaints to odi and volvo, volvo field reports and warranty data found that etm failure could result in (1) engine stall; (2) mechanical limp mode; (3) lunging forward during low-speed driving maneuvers; and (4) faltering during high speed merges or when crossing traffic.odi identified 12 crashes related to etm failure, with 6 caused by lunging incidents, 3 caused by stalling incidents, 2 caused by mechanical limp mode and 1 from the faltering condition.odi's analysis of complaint data and information obtained from consumer interviews identified 1,289 incidents with safety related consequences (389.1 per 100,000 vehicles), including 479 involving engine stall (144.6 per 100,000 vehicles) and 729 involving mechanical limp mode (220.0 per 100,000 vehicles).odi's analysis of warranty claim narrative text shows at least 14,965 warranty claims with codes indicating an etm fault resulting in vehicle operation in mechanical limp mode (4.5% of the subject vehicles). Volvo?s recall addresses odi?s safety concerns with etm failures.odi will continue to monitor the subject vehicles to determine if additional action IS required.this engineering analysis IS closed.
Pe05-041 was opened on july, 26, 2005, based on 136 consumer complaints to odi alleging throttle control malfunctions in the subject vehicles.odi has now received 591 complaints of etm failures which allege symptoms with potential safety related consequences.these include allegations of engine stall, vehicle surging forward without accelerator input, vehicle hesitation upon acceleration and sudden and unexpected transition into reduced performance operation (limp mode).volvo submitted over 2,900 complaints concerning the etm in the subject vehicles during pe05-041.odi's preliminary analysis of a sample the volvo complaints identified approximately 55 percent with one or more of the symptoms described above.odi IS continuing its assessment of the information contained in the volvo complaints. In november 2005, to resolve an investigation by the california air resources board, volvo announced that it would extend the warranty coverage to 10 years / 200,000 miles for the etm in approximately 356,000 model year 1999 through 2002 passenger cars sold in the united states and canada.under volvo's policy, vehicles that experience etm failures will receive a variety of repairs including etm cleaning, reprogramming the engine control module and/or replacement of the etm. This investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-021) to continue to assess the safety consequences of etm failures in the subject vehicles.
