BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2011 128i and 2007-2011 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i vehicles. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.
Risk and remedy
Risk
An electrical short can cause the parts within the PCV valve to melt, increasing the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle is not in use.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PCV valve heater, free of charge. Interim letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. Owners will receive a second notification by the end of October 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Risk
Should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners with an interim notification letter in January 2014 since parts are not currently available. When parts are available, BMW sent a second letter in August and dealers will repair the occupant detection mat to eliminate the possibility that it may crack, free of charge. Additionally, owners of model year 2006-2007 3 Series with standard seats, 5 Series with comfort seats, and Z4 models, will receive an extended warranty on their front passenger seat occupant detection mat. BMW 530I headlights have faulty wiring. Insulation is crumbling an severly degraded leaving bare wires exposed to short circuits. Discovered the faulty wire when I went to replace the parking / angel eye lights. I have attempted to solve the problem short term with electrical tape. As soon as you touch the wire to put electrical tape on it, more of the faulty insulation comes off. Wire has essentially lost all insulation.

The contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 MPH, there was smoke coming from the hood. The "transmission overheating" message was displayed. The vehicle was inoperable. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the PCV valve and transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained with the independent mechanic awaiting the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000. The VIN was not available.

The contact owns a 2007 BMW 530I. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal burning odor coming from the A/C vents. The contact also noticed the burning odor whenever opening the hood. The message "Service Engine Soon" was displayed. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V119000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). However, the parts to do the recall repair were not yet available. The local dealer was not contacted. The contact stated while driving 65-70 MPH, he noticed smoke coming out from underneath the hood of the vehicle. The contact veered to the side of the road for a moment and then opened the hood. The contact was able to continue driving. The contact stated that the failure had reoccurred on two different occasions. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 175,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

The contact owns a 2007 BMW 530i. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the brakes would not engage when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact also stated that he had to use additional force on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the vacuum hose and the brake booster needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 10V446000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and referred the contact to the local dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 137,745.

So I call bmwusa to see if this was recalled. the man I spoke with said yes it was but I let me have your vin# oh no I'm sorry not for your vin " I was shocked to think it would be a recall on one but not another. If it IS effecting my air bag u would think. It would be a safety issue for all cars that get that error. Or was that car built knowing it was eventually going to go out and we the customers are going to have to pay for it. I would rather not have that at all. It makes no sense. especially if your ok to fix some cars and not all of them after all why would we want something in the car if we know one its just going to go out and we have to pay for it. And for the safety part . It even sounds more crazy that something like that could malfunction and I not even sure if anybody should ride in my passenger seat. The headlight went out - replaced bulbs and still not working. Removed the headlight assembly and noticed every wire was bare with barely any coating left to protect the wires- at least 15 wires. Headlight replacement cost IS over $650.00.!! This IS an electrical hazard and could cause shorting out and a dangerous driving situation in the least.

The front passenger seat occupant detection light IS on due to the mat cushion failure. this IS very common on BMW and most of them have a recall issued, but not for my 2007. please advise as the dealership wants $1800 for a new one. passenger airbag will not work unless replaced

The passenger seat occupancy mat sensor has failed and it has triggered the seat belt and airbag light sensor for my BMW. BMW says it IS not under recall, but they have recalled the 2006 BMW E60 (mine IS a 2007) for the same problem.

The headlight assembly had a halo light that burnt out. I went to the dealer and bought a replacement bulb. When I unscrewed the light bulb, the wiring insulation fell off and exposed all of the copper wiring in the headlight wiring harness. They do not sell a replacement wiring harness and now I'm required to buy a new headlight assembly for the passengers side which costs approx $1700+ at my local dealership. Due to the high costs of the headlight assembly, I'm not able to afford it and now my car will not pass inspection which has prevented me from driving it. I can only imagine that the other headlight has the same issue from reading 100'S of other forum posts on the internet about this same issue with their vehicles. I've attempted to fix this issue myself using electrical tape but that didn't work for long. I've contacted repair shops and they won't take the headlight assembly apart due to the age of it. The vehicle was in motion when the light bulb burnt out. This issue happened in 2015 and I decided to drive with the halo light bulb burnt out but then the low beam bulb burnt out. Now my car won't pass inspection to continue driving it in texas.

My car automatically shut off and I smelled a burning plastic odor coming from the engine. I took my car to the BMW licensed mechanic that I normally see who repaired the issue that was deemed to be the pcv valve heater. This happened at the end of may. Then at the end of june, I received a lower from BMW announcing recall # 17v-683: pcv valve heater. BMW told me today that they can not refund me for the repairs that I had done because these repairs had to be performed at a BMW dealership. I have all my receipts. Total repairs cost $2626.91 + rental car expenses of $204.16 and $76.71. * (recall related incident) ts

Last year I could hear a sound of water through my sunroof and would have water thrown at me through my ac. My stereo and dash stopped working and suddenly started working after a couple of months. I took it to 2 different locations and they would tell me there was no short in a fuse. yesterday my car would not start it was stationed in front of my home. I went to a mechanic and found that my battery was sitting in water. The car will not start even after water was drained and the battery was replaced. I called BMW but they want to charge me $385 just for a diagnostic. I have changed my battery like 4 time in the last 2 years which IS just a headache in itself. My vehicle wont start.

My 2007 BMW 530I has a message in the dash with a red steering wheel saying "steering wheel lock malfunction!" "steering wheel may stay locked/unlocked and vehicle may not start"..... I have called the BMW manufacturing company in south carolina and they told me that there was nothing they could do about this issue stating that the vehicle was 11 yrs old and problems will accrue with that age on any vehicle. Yes that may be true but this IS a safety issue because the steering wheel could lock while driving down the rd and cause an accident. I also called the local BMW dealership to see how much it would cost to resolve this issue on my own and the said that the part itself was around $600!!! Then add on 4HRS of labor to that with a labor rate of $145 and he! That adds up to almost $1200.00, how can a steering wheel lock cost so much! And us customers be forced to pay this amount because if we don't we may end up on the interstate at 70mph and the steering lockup and have major accident. Someone please help with this issue!

To effectively move the camshafts to the target positions in the specified time and under all engine conditions, sufficient oil pressure supply to the VANOS control pistons must always be available. If engine operation requires the VANOS system to quickly advance or retard the intake or exhaust camshaft, faults may be stored if the camshaft is ""late"", or does not reach the target position. In this situation, engine power may be reduced and a check control message is displayed. The consequential fault 3100 or 120408 can also be set in the DME fault memory as well."

- 10150330"Discharged Battery: Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed. The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle ""discharged battery"" complaints. A discharged battery can have various causes, most of which do not concern the battery itself. A failed battery is often the symptom and not the cause. A fully serviceable battery fails when an electrical component causes the battery to discharge; the battery becomes internally damaged and must be replaced. The cause of the discharged battery must be analyzed in order to guarantee a proper repair. During the vehicle's operational life, normal engine oil seepage or sweating, in addition to accumulated road dust, dirt and grime in the engine compartment can cause the appearance of a more severe oil leak. This is further exaggerated by residual oil that remains on the engine assembly after maintenance services are performed, e.g., oil filter changes, "engine oil top-offs," etc. If this visual appearance of accumulated oil on the engine assembly as an "active leak" is misinterpreted, unnecessary gasket repairs/replacements will result. Specifically, our analysis of the claim-related data for vehicles equipped with the engines noted in this bulletin is showing an above-average number of engine gasket repair/replacement claim submissions. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide your workshop with information and a procedure that will help in identifying engine oils leaks that do and do not require a repair.
- 10148034"Intelligent Battery Sensor Diagnosis Hints. The vehicle enters the workshop with one or more of the following complaints: * Check Control Message related to battery discharge * No-start condition * Consumer power reduction (reduced blower speed, heated seats operation, etc.) * The following fault codes may be stored in the DME a. 2E8B - Intelligent battery sensor, signal b. 2E8C - Intelligent battery sensor, function c. 2E8D - Intelligent battery sensor, signal transmission d. 2E8E - Intelligent battery sensor, communication CAUSE A faulty battery or IBS sensor (not both) The power management system and IBS in the vehicle cannot determine if the battery needs to be replaced. This is normal operation for all E-Series vehicles because they do not have the Advanced IBS sensor that the F-Series vehicles do. An external battery tester (Midtronics EXP-1000) must be used to determine if the battery needs to be replaced. Energy Diagnosis will not prompt for a battery replacement unless the battery is ""aged."" When energy diagnosis identifies the battery as ""aged,"" it means the amount of energy discharge over the course of the life of the battery has reached its maximum (worn out). In most cases, energy diagnosis states that the battery is OK. This is typically an indication of the current State of Charge (SoC), not the State of Health (SoH). The SoC is defined as the current amount of energy left in the battery (displayed as a percentage). The SoH is defined as an evaluation of the condition of the battery over a period of time (displayed as a percentage).
