The second row bench seats have been replaced with seats built with revised headrest lockout mechanisms.
The contact owns a 1998 Ford Windstar. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was shuddering significantly. The vehicle was taken to a Tire Store, where it was diagnosed that the rear axle was corroded and had fractured from the upper side to the lower side. The mechanic related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V385000 (Suspension). The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
We woke up this morning to the driver's side completely burned and melted. It had been parked sinced Monday. Fire inspector said it was definitely an electrical issue coming from the seat.
TL* the contact owns a 1998 ford windstar. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact heard a hissing sound coming from the vehicle, but could not identify where the sound originated. The contact also began to smell a burning rubber odor. The contact pulled into a nearby driveway and placed the vehicle in park. The contact was unable to identify any failures with the vehicle. The contact called a certified mechanic; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the failures were similar to nhtsa campaign number: 10v385000 (suspension). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
Subframe rusted on left front passenger side. 1998 ford windstar. I had a popping noise when I made a left turn and loud crunching noise and steering wheel pulled to left. I had taken it to a auto shop and they replaced struts.sway bars and brakes . No one told me about the rust issue with the sub frame. I drove it home from shop. Same problem. Returned the vehicle to same repair shop and the had a welder attach steel bracket to hold up sub frame. 2 days later worse. I had a second mechanic look at it and he told me the first repair should not have asked me to repair anything on the van. Sub frame IS failed at 128,436 miles. I notified ford motor co . Of the failure, was givin a case number. Engine will fall out of bottom with corrosion of sub frame. Vehicle IS not safe to drive

My MINI van lights would flicker while I'm driving and even after replacing the starter in the car, it still turns off while I'm driving. There's rust coming from under the car, I smell a burnt smell when I'm driving. I'm having electrical issues, my car stops when it wants to in the middle of the highway, .. It makes noises when I'm turning, I have rust coming from under my car. The signal lights flicker. while driving the windshield washer, seat belt, and door ajar warning lights flash on and off. What IS that?!
ABS dashboard light stays on vibration when braking while in motion vibration IS proportional to speed
Regarding ford motor company safety recall notice 15s27: ford motor company IS refusing to repair my rear axle which fractured due to a poorly designed axle that has been the subject of numerous recalls, including the installation of axle reinforcement brackets (which had been done and later inspected at phil's ford in port jervis, ny - winter of 2015). I was told the bracket reinforcement repair had been properly installed, however the axle still broke on 8/17/17 while I was driving at 65 mph on the interstate - an incredibly dangerous situation! The break occurred at and within the reinforcement bracket. Eventually, someone will be hurt or killed because of ford's neglect to fix this problem. The more I see of ford's resistance to take care of this safety issue the greater my concern IS for other drivers (of a van designed for families with children) who are unaware of the danger they are in due to the company's neglect. They are telling people that their windstar vans are safe to drive after the bracket reinforcement repair. They are not safe to drive. my local ford dealership (healey brothers ford in goshen, ny) IS refusing to honor the earlier recall, ford motor company customer relations IS refusing to honor the earlier recall claiming that the offer to repair my vehicle has expired.
TL* the contact owns a 1998 ford windstar. While driving, the steering wheel shook and the vehicle pulled to the left and right. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front driver side subframe was rusted due to corrosion and the subframe needed to be replaced. The contact called john kennedy ford- pottstown at (800) 790-8132 (located at 3189 w ridge pike, pottstown, pa 19464) where the dealer referenced nhtsa campaign number: 10v385000 (suspension), but not for the subframe. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. No further assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 100,197.
My MINI van lights would flicker while I'm driving and even after replacing the starter in the car, it still turns off while I'm driving. There's rust coming from under the car, I smell a burnt smell when I'm driving. I don't know how my vin number wasn't part of the recall, so many things IS wrong with the van, one thing after another.. Please help me

There's an electric shortage thats stopping my van from fully starting
Rear axel broke in half while driving down a flat road. Ford dealerships telling me it will take at least a month to fix. No talk of providing a rental vehicle. They were even saying they might or might not pay for fixing it. I called ford customer service who said I would get a day car rental and if it takes longer than a day, the dealership needs to get a rental preapproved by ford and pay for as long as it takes to repair. She said to call them that they were waiting to set things up. I called them, was transferred to 3 people and then a voicemail. Left message and no one called. I then called back and they said I would be transferred to head manager and again given a voice mail. I called the customer service again and explained all this. The guy answering was breathing on the line, would not say anything or respond after I had finished and put me thru to survey which I gave him all 1S. I called back and a case was opened. I need help. Please help

Broken axle while driving. thankfully was not driving at highway speeds or this could have been devastating. ford will no longer honor 3RD recall after installing safety plates and saying axle looked ok.
I came to a stop sign. The brake pedal went to floor without any warning. I was able to steer to the shoulder without hitting the car ahead of me. The car finally rolled to a stop with the help of the emergency brake. the vehicle was in motion and on a dual lane highway.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but did not provide any assistance. There was no recall for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 160,376.
TL* the contact owns a 1998 ford windstar. The contact stated that the vehicle was leaking power steering fluid. The contact stated that the vehicle needed approximately one bottle of power steering fluid per day for it to operate normally. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the spindle and rack fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 97v165000 (steering); however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
Rear axle extremely rusted, falling apart, still garage conditions, doesn't look safe
The front subframe to which the engine and steering components are mounted IS rusted to an extent that a dangerous accident could occur. ford has issued recalls for the 1999 through 2003 models for this problem. since my windstar has the same problem as issued for the later models, I believe it should receive the same remedy. since complete failure of the subframe has not yet occured, it IS not possible to state whether it will occur whether the vehicle IS stationary or in motion
TL* the contact owns a 1998 ford windstar. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in for routine service, it was informed that the bracket support for the suspension was corroded and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 15v608000 (suspension). The contact was informed that the vehicle was unsafe to repair and was unsafe to be driven. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure was 158,000.
Sorry, about this but it IS not a complaint. I want to ley you know that the cae discribed IS not working anymore I sent it to the junk.
TL* the contact owns a 1998 ford windstar. While driving at approximately 40 mph, there was an abnormal noise and vibrations coming from the rear driver side of the vehicle. The contact observed that the rear driver side wheel turned inwards and the check engine warning indicator illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
In a letter dated August 26, 2010, Ford Motor Company (Ford) submitted a Defect Information Report notifying NHTSA that it will conduct a safety recall (NHTSA Recall No. 10V-385) to address a rear axle defect in model year (MY) 1998 through 2003 Ford Windstar vehicles built at the Oakville assembly plant from September 1, 1997 through February 28, 2003 and either sold or currently registered in high corrosion (Salt-Belt) states where the use of salt and other corrosive chemicals may be used to treat snow/ice covered roads. The following states are included in Ford's recall:Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The subject vehicles utilize a Stamped/Formed axle assembly manufactured by Benteler automotive Corporation of Galesburg, MI.According to Ford, after many years of vehicle service in the Salt-Belt states, corrosion can weaken the rear axle, making it susceptible to torsional stress. There is a risk that the combined effects of corrosion and stress can lead to cracks which, if undetected, can propagate and result in a complete fracture of the axle.A completely fractured axle can affect vehicle handling and increase the risk of a crash. To correct the safety defect, Ford will initially inspect all of the subject vehicles brought into Ford/Lincoln-Mercury dealerships for possible cracked axles.Owners of vehicles without cracked axles will be notified when to return for the installation of reinforcement brackets to extend the axle durability in the presence of corrosion.Owners who have vehicles with cracked axles will either be offered a repair or alternative transportation until parts become available. On May 13, 2010, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE10-016 to investigate complaints of rear axle cracking in MY 1999 through 2003 Ford Windstar minivans.Combining ODI and Ford complaint data, ODI is aware of a total 891 complaints alleging rear axle cracking in the subject vehicles.Over a third of the complaints (334) allege that the cracking progressed to a complete fracture of the rear axle, including 8 allegations of crashes resulting in 3 injuries. Approximately 57 percent of the subject vehicles (524,661) were sold in Salt-Belt states covered by Ford's recall and Ford estimates that approximately 463,000 of these remain in service.Ninety-six percent of the complaints (858) and all of the complaints alleging complete fracture were from the recall region. The action taken by Ford is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.
Ea08-021 IS closed with ford's actions in recall 09v-399 recalling approximately 4.5 million vehicles equipped with texas instruments speed control deactivation switches (scds).with this recall ford has now recalled all of the approximate 16 million ford model vehicles that were manufactured from my 1992 through 2003 with a texas instruments scds.nhtsa will continue to monitor the recalled vehicles to ensure remedies installed by ford tomitigate the potential for scds related fires are effective.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached closing report for further details.
Odi has received 134 consumer complaints, 285 manufacturer complaints, and 137 manufacturer warranty claims alleging incidents of engine compartment fire in model year (my) 1995 thru 2003 ford windstar vehicles.two of the odi complaints allege the fires caused structural damage to the complainant's home.of the 134 odi complaints, 36 allege the fire occurred while the vehicle was parked, 72 allege the fire occurred while the vehicle was running and 26 of the complaints do not specify if the vehicle was running or not.further review of the odi complaints shows that 72 allege that the speed control deactivation switch (scds) caused the fire and 10 allege that the scds leaked brake fluid on to the ABS module resulting in the fire.there were 52 that did not identify a cause or that identified miscellaneous other causes.odi has also received 89 complaints ( not counted in this resume) alleging that the scds developed a brake fluid leak.thirteen of these complaints say that the leak at the scds resulted in braked fluid reaching the ABS module.this pe has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea) to further evaluate the cause of the fires and assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect.
The subject vehicles range in age from 4?7 years in service, with average mileages estimated to range from 50 to 100 thousand miles.at these mileages, the subject wheels are likely to have been removed and reinstalled multiple times for various service procedures.odi IS concerned about the high wheel separation rates in the my 1997-98 windstar vehicles equipped with aluminum alloy wheels.however, analysis of failure data indicates that most of the incidents in that population of vehicles occur after the vehicles had accumulated 30 thousand miles of service. The factors that increase the risk that inadequate clamp loads may be achieved during service-related wheel installation are not unique to the subject vehicles.testing conducted by ford and vrtc indicate that the my 1998 windstar aluminum wheel fastening system performs similar to the wheel fastening systems on peer minivans.no design or manufacturing defects were identified in the wheel fastening systems of the subject vehicles. Ford will send a mailing to owners of windstar vehicles with aluminum wheels that have high wheel separation rates that reviews the appropriate wheel fastening procedures and states that the wheel nuts should be tightened to the nominal torque, 100 ft-lbs (136 nm), and re-tightened to the same torque after 500 miles.ford?s letter also states that it IS ?a good practice to be sure that before installing the wheel the aluminum wheel mounting surface, wheel lug nut area, and the mounting flange are free from dirt, debris, and loose rust to ensure the wheel IS seated correctly and the wheel lug nuts remain fully tightened.? Odi will continue to monitor the incidence of wheel fastener failures in the subject vehicle population.accordingly, this investigation IS closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances. For additional information, see the attached closing report.
Analysis of odi and ford data has identified 1619 incidents of wheel stud fracture in my 1998 through 2000 ford windstar vehicles, including 69 wheel separations and 11 crashes.ford has not been able to identify any design or manufacturing defects in its analyzis of the problem.ford maintains that the failures are caused by either:(1) inadvertent overtorquing of lug nuts during removal or installation; or (2) fatigue due to insufficient clamp load between the wheel and the brake rotor or drum and hub assembly.according to ford, corrosion, dirt, or damage present on the road wheel at the nut inteface could contribute to the latter condition. Analysis of odi complaint data indicates that the subject vehicles experience wheel stud failures at significantly higher rates than peer minivans.this investigation has been upgraded to further assess the frequency, scope, and trend of the alleged defect condition in my 1997 through 2000 windstar minivans.
