Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America, Inc (Isuzu) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Rodeo and Axiom, and 2003 Rodeo Sport vehicles that were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia…

  Risk and remedy

  Risk

The corrosion may allow the bracket to detach from the frame, impacting vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.

  Remedy

Isuzu will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In the event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be sufficient, Isuzu will offer to repurchase the vehicle for an amount based on the Kelley Blue Book "Private Party" price. All inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, Isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an Isuzu service facility dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued, after that time owners will be charged for the repairs. The recall is expected to begin in mid-December 2013. Isuzu owners may contact Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

In Florida, I purchased my 2004 Isuzu Rodeo March 2005 at 134 miles. I've always had issues, but didn't know how to articulate the issues. My truck sits/leans to the right and low in the back. It is uneven as if the shocks or struts are off. Driving one night, the truck slams down/drops low out of no where while driving. When I am driving and need to brake, I have to brake then brake again. I dare not make any sharp turns by parking or anything it's like the truck will slip or axels bend. I am have trouble with the engine currently(September 2022). Oil is leaking but you can't see from where. The engine is making loud rambling sounds. The exhaust sounds muffled. My car parts are not exact because my Rodeo is built like a demo, seemingly. Power Reduced & check engine light happens randomly usually while on the expressway. It slows the vehicle down in the middle of flowing traffic. I have to try to pull over turn car off then back on to try & reset the vehicle. The car now vibrates but don't know from where or cause. How can I get my car repaired?

My vehicle IS operated in minnesota where road salts are in constant winter use. on august 21, 2019 my mechanic hoisted my SUV and we watched with surprise as some flat rust slabs fell to his shop floor. He looked above the fall location: the spare tire IS attached just below a well, and within the spare-tire wheel-gaps were additional loose rust slabs that had not yet fallen. They were removed. The mechanic then pondered a likely cause: he reasoned the metal plate (and/or the areas alongside it) that helps secure the spare tire might be excessively rusty. To see it he had to insert his head up into the well, but which did not give him enough of clear view to assess the matter adequately (nor could I manage to get much of a look). He reasoned that minnesota winter-salt road-spray can reach the well (he said there might be something there called a carrier assembly of parts) and corrode the plate, making it possible for the spare tire to come loose while my SUV IS motion, creating a road hazard. we did photography but did not have a flexible-neck camera to insert up into the well. So all we have are snaps of 1) many of flat rust slabs that fell down during the mechanics inspection (shown as a pile on the floor just below the spare tire?s well location) in one photo, and 2) an upward shot at the spare tire with some rust slabs that had not yet fallen, which also offers a general look of wheel and well rust conditions that we saw. lastly, I decided to visit nhtsas website to look for similar incidents that might pertain to my vehicle. I came up with ID #10649039. It offers a somewhat similar textual narrative describing rear frame rust conditions that makes mention of a spare tire. I created a pdf of photos and incident ID #10649039, which I will upload after this pdf. It will be titled part2_ijn5-55344_isuzurodeo2004tiresupportfailurevin[xxx].pdf. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *Tr

We purchased the vehicle on march 12, 2014. After purchase , saturday march 15 we drove tbe isuzu at highway speed. The vehicle began to shake loudly and vibrate. We pulled over. Returned to home at 65 to 45 mph without shaking. Monday I reported this frightening event to the dealership. I requested repair or replacement. The salesman promised repairs. A pre-purchase disclosure was that the fuel gauge did not work. Sales staff assured me this had been, or would be fixed by the dealership. Prior to the first scheduled repair visit, I reported that the horn does not work and that the air bag was uncovered. The dealership covered the air bag but told me afterwards they had no way to verify if the air bag IS functional. There IS no air bag icon on the dash. I repeatedly reported these safety issues to sales staff and general manager [xxx]. The manager told me "while it IS on the lot it IS my problem. Once you drive it off it IS yours." after three repair visits, and two months of generic "we will take care of you"-- none of the primary safety problems have been fixed. My vehicle, which I am making payments on, IS unsafe to drive on the highway. Without a horn, possibly unsafe to drive in town. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *tr

I had issue with my '04 isuzu rodeo for about a year now different issues. First my engine IS eating up all the oil. I got an synthetic oil change on FEB7 and on MAR8 the stick had no oil I took it back and they topped everything but they couldn't find a leak unless the engine was consuming the oil last year I took my car in to suzuki dealer ship because of the oil issue and they couldn't find any problems they just change the starter. 2ND issue one day I was driving on a texas hwy going about 55 because it was a windy day and my truck just jerked like if I slammed on the brakes and all the lights lit up but the check engine, reduce speed, tire pressure and the low gas tank stayed on for a long time. When I schedule it to be look at they couldn't find anything wrong with the truck even though I had videos of the problem hopping while driving on the hwy. 3RD issue im having an issue switching gears. For example my truck IS parked for over an hour and when I need to out my truck on park or reverse its stuck. I'm pushing on the brakes and sometimes it won't budge until after 5 mins or so 4TH issue I'm not any having of the previous issue mentioned @ time except for when I put the truck in reverse it starts to putting & shake like when you run out of gas or completely turn off

On approximately 2/8/13 I was on my way to work when the engine light came on, when I went to pull off the highway and onto an exit ( to get off of the highway.) I pressed the brakes, and the brakes and steering locked up , I had no control of my SUV as it hit the jersey barrier. The right front headlight and fender hit 1ST then the right rear side and back fender scraped against the barrier. I was seat belted although still received injuries of my left ankle, knee, neck and back. The body shop insurance adjuster said it was a total loss. Since 2006 my engine light has been coming on and when taking to repair shops they said there was nothing wrong with my SUV and made the engine light somehow go off. I have written to the american isuzu co over the past 6 or 7 yrs although have never heard back from them in regards to the engine light coming on from 2006 until 2/8/13. *tr

I was on the interstate and as I pressed the accelerator to increase my speed-i was currently going 55-the accelerator got stuck. the vehicle continued to increase in speed-during rush hour, but I managed, after pressing the brake hard 4 times, to un-stick the accelerator. I ended up going 80 mph and avoided a crash but this alarmed me as this has never happened to me and it IS as if the vehicle had a "mind of its own". especially after recent deaths in the cases with toyota. I contacted isuzu and I was told that they have not issued any recalls on this issue. I asked if this were to happen in my vehicle again or if a dealer were not able to fix it what would be the course of action, and I was told that I would be responsible for making that financial decision since my warranty IS up. I am sure the first one to have this same type of mechanical error in a toyota was told the same thing and look where it got them! *js

We purchased a 2004 rodeo from honda at their used car service. The sticker had on it as IS warranty. upon returning home we noticed the paperwork we signed did not have a signature on it. they were notifed and that the price was wrong also, they did nothing. A few days later I noticed that the car seemed like it had a flat tire. When we checked it, it was o.k. But it felt different when driven. The next day I noticed that the car was leaning slightly to the left. I went and spoke with the manager and explained it to him and he informed me to bring it in the next day and they would put it up and look at it. The next day I was ill and called and went the following week. Another manager did not do that, but rather drove it and said it felt fine. I insisted that there was something different. He stated he could hear nothing.a week later it IS raining heavily and this car IS very unstable feeling. I call the salesman and tell him that the steering feels loose and and something IS wrong. the salesman was short with me and said "you are just used to driving your BMW". I told him that he was wrong and there was something wrong with it. He told me "take it to isuzu". This was well within the 30 days. Later on driving over 60 the car steering would shake and it felt terrible and unsafe. I go to honda and insist something IS wrong, but no one will put it up and look at it!!. We get the papers out and discover where caliper pins were done, and back brakes and pads done. Then we find out about the recall in 2005 for the fuel leak and possible fires? They never disclosed this to us. We just put back brakes on and they said they were disengrated? The shocks gone, strut re-assembly adjustment? 1400 miles later, they said they did that already? honda said we drove with the emergency brake on? For 1400 miles? They told us the brakes were bad! That they had nearly holes in them. no wonder! do I have any re-course against them. Does this fall under consumer fraud? *cn

On April 10, 2018, NHTSA received a petition from Mr. Kevin Byrne (the Petitioner) requesting that the Agency ?undertake a defects investigation? of ?rust-related detachment of Isuzu Rodeo fuel tanks? (NHTSA ID 11091788). The Petitioner experienced a partial fuel tank detachment in his model year (MY) 2004 Isuzu Rodeo in July 2017. On May 23, 2018, ODI opened DP18-001 to evaluate the Petitioner?s request for a defect investigation. ODI sent information request letters to Isuzu and Honda requesting production, design history and field data related to fuel tank retention failures in MY 2001-2004 Isuzu Rodeo, MY 2002-2004 Isuzu Axiom and MY 2001-2002 Honda Passport vehicles equipped with the same fuel tank shield part number as the Petitioner?s vehicle (the ?subject vehicles?). ODI notes that Isuzu manufactured the subject Passport vehicles for Honda. Isuzu implemented a change to the tank shield corrosion protection system as a running change in early MY 2002 production. Isuzu and Honda sold approximately 172,000 subject vehicles in the United States. Fifty-eight (58) percent of the subject vehicles were produced prior to the shield change (99,000) and 42 percent after the change (73,000).ODI?s analysis of field data identified 19 incidents of partial fuel tank detachments in the subject vehicles. The incidents all occurred in states with high road salt usage in winter months (Salt States) and involved older vehicles beyond 10-years in service. On average, the failures occurred in the vehicle?s 13th year-in-service. Evidence of severe general corrosion in multiple undercarriage components was also noted in 13 of the 19 vehicles that experienced partial fuel tank detachments. None of the incidents resulted in fuel leakage or fire. Aside from the petitioner?s vehicle, ODI has not identified any other incidents of complete or partial fuel tank detachment in the MY 2002-2004 subject vehicles equipped with the modified retention shield. In addition, ODI reviewed 24 NHTSA complaints alleging corrosion concerns with the fuel tank retention system in the subject vehicles that did not result in fuel tank detachment. Twenty-three (23) of these complaints involve subject vehicles built prior to the shield change. Like the vehicles reporting fuel tank detachments, these vehicles are also all from Salt States and, in most cases (20 of the 24 complaints), the vehicles also experienced severe corrosion concerns in other undercarriage components. Half (12 of the 24 complaints) of the vehicles show prior accident damage in their service histories.Based on these analyses, ODI has not identified evidence of a defect trend for premature corrosion-related fuel tank detachments in the MY 2004 Isuzu Rodeo or similarly equipped vehicles. The damage that may result in tank retention concerns appears to occur progressively over many years with ample opportunity for detection and repair. Furthermore, ODI has not identified any crashes, fires, injuries, or fuel leaks associated with fuel tank retention failures in a population of vehicles that currently range from 16 to 19 years old.Accordingly, the Agency is denying the petition.A summary of ODI?s analysis of this petition will be published in the Federal Register and is also available in the investigative file for this action. The NHTSA consumer complaints counted in the closing resume for DP18-001 can be reviewed at www.nhtsa.gov under the following ODI identification numbers (VOQs in parentheses denote duplicate records): Allegations of fuel tank retention failure: 11084098 (11091788), 10532845, 10486109. Allegations of fuel tank retention component corrosion: 11138931, 10992150, 10845523,

When setting the backlash it should be set between 0.003? to 0.005? on a new ring and pinion for any American Axle Manufacturing application. The ring and pinion can be reused or adjusted if the mileage is less than 500 miles, if not used for towing. Technician should be advised that a ?roller coaster? or ?hourglass? pattern on the bearings may be normal up to 10,000 miles and possibly longer. With a mis-machined housing you may get a heel pattern on both sides of the gear teeth at build up can generally be corrected with backlash adjustments. When setting up an 8.6? axle with a 5 cut gear set is to use a 0.035? pinion shim and set backlash to 0.004?. When using the newer 2 cut gear set also use a 0.035? pinion shim and still set backlash to 0.004?. To set the gear pattern use backlash to adjust the pattern heel to toe. Use the pinion shim to adjust the height of the pattern. The proper drive pinion bearing pre-load is from 15 - 30 inch pounds with new bearings. The total torque to turn after the differential case is installed should increase 5 - 10 inch pounds at the pinion. A new pinion nut must be used whenever the old one is removed. The axle shaft end play specification is 0.012? per side and the radial specification is 0.002? - 0.003?. Technician should be advised that synthetic lube can be used in all new American Axle Manufacturing axle assemblies. The new pinion seal for the 8.6? axle assembly is a two piece design.
