The Owner's Manual instructions for defroster operation are incorrect and may result in reduced defroster performance under specific conditions. Risk and remedy
Risk
Reduced defroster performance can limit visibility out of the windshield, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Nissan will mail an addendum with updated instructions on how to operate the defroster, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 26, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R23A1.
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2017 LEAF and 2014, 2016 and 2017 Sentra vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error within the air bag inflators, the passenger frontal air bag may not properly deploy in the event of a crash.
Risk and remedy
Risk
In the event of a crash, if the front passenger air bag doesn't deploy properly, it can increase the risk of injury to passengers.
Remedy
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began June 7, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

The manufacturer-installed 40kWh replacement battery has suffered an internal high-voltage isolation short to the vehicle chassis (Codes P0AA6/P31E7), creating an immediate fire and shock hazard. The component failed just 2 years after installation in 2024. Nissan is refusing to repair this severe safety defect because the vehicle's original body frame is past its warranty window.

The reduction gear/transaxle failing. Metal in fluid leads to increased noise. Drivetrain will eventually fail and unsafe to drive. Case #56669999 was filed with Nissan Consumer Affairs and they have denied assistance for out of warranty repair. While the car is outside the number of years in the warranty, at 37K miles it is still well within the 60K mileage warranty. A drivetrain should not fail with such low mileage despite years in service.

My son and I were in a major crash on a freeway, we were hit by a semi-truck, sent into a spin, hit by another vehicle and stopped by slamming into freeway guardrail. The car was totaled. My son was driving and airbags on the drivers side all deployed but nothing deployed on the passenger side at all.

They inspected it, and came back with the OCS control unit & sensor failure report, and wanted a thousand dollars to replace them. While there is a OCS recall for multi Nissan models, and my car is left out, and the VIN# is not included in this recall... ** also called Nissan custome affair, and I was told the same thing about my VIN# has no OCS recall, and was provided no explanation ** ** the LEAF's been driving normal, no accidents, and clean record **

I believe this puts all passengers in the front seat at risk since the airbag may not operate in an accident. The car is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer or others.

New intelligent brake control unit was installed. Car has less than 36,000 miles on it. This part should not have failed. Part is available for examination. 7/23/22-I called Nissan Consumer Affairs to discuss the issue with the part, they said the car was no longer under warranty, so to bad, so sad.

This IS a 2017 nissan leaf with 30kwh battery with a dc-fc fast charge plug that's supposed to be able to charge the battery roughly 15X faster than 6.6K level2/3 chargers. the key two problems are as follows: a. Dcfc fails to charge on 2017 nissan leaf and causes j1772 to be unable to charge it anymore subsequently getting a charge in a pinch leads to really needing a tow truck!! b. The range on the battery drops drastically on a regular day to day drive... the other day I left for a 4.5mile trip with 17miles on gom and by time I drove 2 miles range went down to 11miles. Before I was 1/2 way low battery indicator went off and ~1.5miles to home very low battery kicks in. - I believe the car gom always over estimates the range to what I'm able to drive. It can never drive up to the suggested range so I must have either a bad battery or a faulty battery management module of some sorts ???

A sudden loss of propulsion with out an audible warning. the vehicle operates at creep speed. I notice it because the can not accelerate. a moment of confusion sets in in trying to figure out what IS going on. A tell tale light of a turtle comes on. I have to work my way through traffic to pull on the side of the road. this IS a concern on a busy highway. the tell tale light goes away after cycling the power by turning the car off and starting it all over. it gives me the impression that the trouble went away. this issue occurred once a year. I didn't think much of it. it IS now happening once a week in the past two months. someone can get hurt in the worst case scenario. I believe the warning light should remain on until the issue IS resolved. I noticed the issue happens when the climate IS hot and I am driving with the ac on. the battery temperature IS in the safe zone. Nissan didn't take it seriously. I took a picture of it.

When driving our nissan leaf from 4000 feet altitude up to about 7000 feet altitude (about 2500 feet altitude change), something under the left rear passenger side of the car (behind the driver) makes a loud bang and can be felt through the foot-well or floor. This happens every time we drive the same section of road, which IS usually twice a week. Internet research suggests other nissan leaf owners have had the same issue and at altitude, and that it may be a issue with compression and expansion of the battery case. I have reported this before, but am reporting it again as it continues to occur. *tr

When turning left the visibility IS very poor for a 5' 1" driver. the double "a" pillar and large side view mirror block the driver's visibility and caused an accident. several other people also complained about the visibility almost causing accidents on a leaf blog website. the accident happened when turning left at a busy intersection and an old lady fell because the leaf driver did not see the pedestrian soon enough due to poor visibility on a clear day around noon. the leaf had stopped waiting for 3 vehicles to pass before making the left turn at a slow speed but the large double "a" pillar and large side mirror blocked the driver's view.

When driving our 2017 nissan leaf electric vehicle at about 65 mph up a steep hill / steep incline, we are experiencing a loud clunk from the battery area when the vehicle climbs over 2000ft elevation within a short distance (16 miles). the clunk always happens within the same 1 mile stretch of road and happens every time we drive the car from salt lake city, ut (4,226 feet) to summit park, ut (6,887 feet). we first noticed it this summer 2019. there IS an audible clunk and it can be felt through the passenger foot-well behind the driver's seat. There IS a thread on the mynissanleaf.com discussion forum that describes the same issue (http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=19883&p=565545#p565545). the contributors think it has something to do with the electric battery case expanding or contracting under pressure. Brake failure at low speeds. In the last eight months I have owned this vehicle, twice the car failed to stop when I applied brakes. I was going at around 20-25 mph in both the cases.

I was driving very slowly in a parking lot, trying to find a place to park. When I was on the 4TH floor I found a spot, made a right hand turn, and as I slowly turned into the spot I took my foot of of the accelerator to put my foot on the brake, the car accelerated and caused more than $16,000 worth of damage to my car. I have leased this car since aug, 2017. Before that I leased a 2015 nissan leaf and never had any problems with the care.

This IS a new car less than 4 weeks old. There IS a problem with the rear hatch not closing properly due to poor alignment during assembly. It IS very difficult to get the hatch to close and latch properly and you have to really slam it. Even when you think it IS closed, it can pop open when driving, particularly on a bumpy or potholed road. It has yet to open fully, but it IS very unnerving on the freeway. We have an appointment with the dealer to get fixed, but they said it IS a common problem on the 2017's.

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.

If there is a REPAIR KIT-DUST BOOT (CV Joint Boot Kit) available for the vehicle being repaired, do NOT replace the axle. Install a new boot kit following the procedure in the ESM. o Refer to the ESM: TRANSMISSION & DRIVELINE > FRONT AXLE > REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION > FRONT DRIVE SHAFT BOOT o If the complete axle (drive shaft) is replaced when only a new boot is required, the over-repair may be charged back to the dealer. If there is NOT a REPAIR KIT-DUST BOOT (CV Joint Boot Kit) available for the vehicle being repaired, refer to the ESM for further diagnostic information. IMPORTANT: When servicing vehicles with staked axle nuts, refer to NTB21-013 to prevent Drive Shaft thread damage.
- 102272673G TELEMATICS HARDWARE DEACTIVATION SERVICE INFORMATION The APPLIED VEHICLES that come equipped with a factory installed SOS switch, located near the overhead map lamp, also come equipped with a wireless communication device called a Telematics Communication Unit (TCU). AT&T discontinued its U.S. 3G network coverage on February 22, 2022. As a result, automakers that utilize AT&Ts 3G network connection, including Nissan Group, have had connectivity services affected. NissanConnect Services are no longer available on the APPLIED VEHICLES listed above.

- 101712302016-2017 LEAF; 40 KWH HIGH VOLTAGE SERVICE BATTERY PACK SERVICE INFORMATION If the High Voltage (HV) Battery Pack needs to be replaced for any reason: - The 40 kWh HV Battery Pack listed in the Parts Information table, on page 26, is a direct replacement for the 30 kWh HV Battery Pack and does not require any additional parts. - The 30KWh HV battery pack is discontinued as of the publication of this bulletin. - For vehicles requiring HV Battery Pack replacement that are not covered by this bulletin, VINS starting with 1N4AZ0, refer to NTB14-059. NOTE: o Refer to the applicable Electronic Service Manual (ESM) section EVB EV Battery System for the procedure to replace the HV Battery Pack. o Refer to Service Information Overview on page 2 for additional services required when replacing the HV Battery Pack. DO NOT READ & WRITE any Li-ion Battery Controller (LBC) data to the new HV Battery Pack assembly. - Writing the old HV Battery Pack LBC data to the new HV Battery Pack assembly will cause the vehicle to read only 8 bars of capacity and will require the LBC to be replaced.
