At least twice I have experienced the headlamps and running lights to fail on dark unlit roads, a very dangerous event. The first event occurred in the winter of 2014 the second in the winter of 2015. Gm recall IS 14291. Nhtsa # 15v519000. I spoke with saab customer service and a saab certified service center. Both say my vehicle IS not covered under this recall because they have determined that the headlamp failure doesn't occur on vehicles with high intensity discharge headlamps which my vehicle has. Yet I've experienced this frightening and deadly failure twice now. My vehicle should be covered under this recall. In those failure situations the car was in motion in darkness on a rural unlit road, it was winter and very cold (~0 degrees fahrenheit)
1. Vehicle stalls/loses power while in motion at a low rate of speed. Problem can't be identified by 3 independent mechanics. one mechanic said replace fuse box and hope it solves the issue. 2. Vehicle has electrical surges causes a multitude of electrical issues. So far: fire in fuse box burning out the low-beam relay, audio interference through the speakers (crackling) when turn signals, or radio are playing, remote access fails intermittently, replaced 2 bosch batteries, bad alternator, 3 air-ride suspension compressors, replace turn signal, brake, and head lights annually, low to no power while idling, and electronics not working intermittently (power seats, heated seats, air compressor, power windows). One mechanic said that there are faint plumes of smoke coming off of the fuse box.
Filed a complaint about this issue before (03/2015) and having the same problem, headlights flicker and sometimes go completely off while driving on highways and city streets. I received a recall notice when this issue was first known, after that I did not receive any other paperwork concerning this issue. the saab north america office and the local dealer keep on telling me that me vehicle does not have the hid headlights (this IS stamped on the headlight housing and when I searched the vin it does show it was installed on this model). I have tried to change the headlight drivers module (hdm) but still the same problem, thought maybe because I purchased an oem product it could be also be bad. purchased an aftermarket hdm and still the same, I do not know where to go with this, I was employed by dod as a fleet manager so I am not stupid when it comes to a vehicle with issues. think that gm IS just trying to get over and do not want to accept it IS a problem with the electrical system. *js
Hid headlights flicker and then turn off. No rhyme or reason; cold weather and hot weather. Headlights will eventually flicker and turn off. I can manually flip the headlights switch off and then on again and they will come back on. Once they come back on, they can stay on for another few seconds or minutes, but they will eventually flicker and turn off again. Most times it's just one headlight at a time because I don't give it enough time before turning it back on before the second one goes out. Both have gone out before at the same time. In my 12 mile route to work in the morning, I may have to turn my headlights on again about 25 times at its worst. Sometimes they will stay on and sometimes it won't even flicker at all. No rhyme or reason. It's dangerous for the obvious reason but also people think you are flashing your lights at them. Can cause road rage in people'so what's worse? Driving dangerously with no headlights or someone getting angry b/c you keep flashing your headlights at them? Dangerous no matter how you look at it. Also police may think you are trying to warn people about them by flashing my headlights! As far as I can tell right now, it's just the low beam hids, not the high beams and not the yellow daytime running lights. Voltage has been tested and they say it's fine at 14 volts for both headlights even though they were flickering/turned off while being tested. Shop wants me to replace hid headlights altogether which IS over $300 not including labor. Has been happening intermittently since I bought the car used in 2009. IS getting worse as mileage goes up it seems. 87,000 miles as of 12/23/2015. Purchased the car in feb.2009 with 20,000 miles. Lights will flicker in idle or while driving at any speed. Also loud buzzing from back speakers at times and stabilitrak light comes on and then will go off randomly.
TL* the contact owns a 2006 saab 9-7X. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, the headlights started to flicker then shut off. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact received a recall notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v755000 (lighting) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 148,732.
In march 2014, while operating the vehicle, the warning bell sounded, and an engine light (with down arrow) illuminated. The driver information center displayed "stabilitrak off", and the car immediately slowed from 45mph to 15mph. The speed of the vehicle would not pass 25mph, and there wasn't even enough power to climb a small hill. after deploying the hazard indicator, and pulling over, the engine was shut off. Upon waiting 2-3 minutes and restarting the engine, the problem did not recur. since then, the problem has recurred at least 3 dozen times, and it IS becoming more frequent. This fault can easily have catastrophic results. *tr
Night driving head lights will suddenly go out and my come back on suddenly. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 saab 9-7X. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the headlights failed and the high beams were required to be activated in order to view the roads. The failure recurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the headlight driver module failed. the vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v755000 (exterior lighting) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
Headlights flickered and I thought they were going to go completely off but they did not. checked the internet and with dealer for this incident and was told this was a normal occurrence with this vehicle. since then, the vehicle now has 145,746 miles and there are more instances of these happenings. also have a problem with the electrical system due to interference coming through the stereo system and creates a humming/buzzing sound coming from the back speakers. had a certified saab technician troubleshoot this problem and found a problem with the ground system (electrical) in the rear speakers/equalizer. I am presuming that this may have something to do with the whole electrical system (to include the headlights, equalizers, speakers) of this vehicle. just had a recall taken care of to replace the front drivers door power window module. *tr
The vehicle starts to jump and stop and shake on turns and while backing up. if turning into a side street this problem can cause a crash I hope my family does not have. This problem IS known and talked about on line by people who own this vehicle. the repairs are expensive. this defect must be addressed by the manufacture before people get hurt or worse. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2006 saab 9-7X. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the heated seats were activated and she heard an abnormal noise coming from the vehicle. The contact also stated that the ABS warning light illuminated. The failure occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but the diagnostic results were not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
After fueling up my tank my gas light stayed on along with my engine light. I took it to a local auto parts store to get it scanned and it ended up being my fuel sensor. the needle floats between full and empty as I drive down the road. I have a family of 8 and 5 of us able to drive. I would like my vehicle to work properly so one of my family members do not become stranded because of this well know faulty fuel sensor. (Which seems to be a manufacturing flaw) I work with others that had the same issue but with related vehicles all with the gmt360 platform and had their sensors replaced which general motors covered but I am wondering why the '06 saab 97X does not have a recall. *tr
While driving home our headlights flickered and turned off. I was able to pull over and restart the vehicle and the headlights came back on. Once driving again, they flickered and the passenger side headlight went out. I was able to drive the vehicle home with the one light (luckily). When I went to replace the headlight, it was back on again. I checked all connections and was unable to find the cause. A couple of weeks later the stabila-trac system light and air bag light came on and went off (5 min period). A couple of days later the steering locked up and would jump, we brought it to the saab dealer and they had to replace the AWD actuator needed to be replaced ($788). We replaced it and the steering and AWD system appeared to work fine. Two days later the airbag light and stabila-trac system light came on again and went off. Dealer was unable to pull up the codes (not logging codes?). A month later while driving, the windshield wipers would come on and turn off on their own and when their on the washer sprayers for the headlights and windshield turn on their own. This vehicle has major safety issues due to electrical issues and should be investigated. This vehicle has become unsafe and untrustworthiness. *Tr
TL* the contact owns a 2006 saab 9-7X. The contact stated that the rear shocks would sporadically become unstable, causing the vehicle to bounce while driving at various speeds over a road bump. The battery was disconnected and the warning light sensor was reset however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 118,000.
The driver side front window will not go down, all other works. That part was a recall last year and was replace, with no charge to me. Also the engine shuts off after the vehicle has started. *tr
I stopped to get gas today and filled my tank all the way up. Upon re-starting the vehicle that fuel gauge said it was completely empty. I drove a few miles and the check engine light came on. After 40 miles or so, the fuel gauge went back to full but the check engine light stayed on. Then for the next 10-15 miles the fuel gauge jumped back and forth from empty to full. The check engine light never went off. I am worried it IS going to shut down on my on the highway like some other people have said! This scares me... And it only just turned over 60K miles today! Gm please step in and fix this problem before people start dying... Seriously! This IS dangerous and I am nervous to drive my saab now. *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The subject vehicles are model year (MY) 2002-2009 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2004-2007 Buick Rainier, 2003-2008 Isuzu Ascender, 2005-2009 Saab 9-7X, 2002-2004 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2003-2006 Chevrolet SSR, 2005-2009 Buick Lacrosse, and 2006-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix. This scope includes the Trailblazer/Envoy variants: 2002-2006 Envoy XL/Trailblazer EXT and 2004-2005 Envoy XUV. The original scope of this investigation was expanded to include all vehicles equipped with the subject Headlight Driver Module (HDM). The focus of the investigation was to determine whether actions performed by General Motors adequately addressed any unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety in the subject vehicles concerning the headlights and the HDM that controls them.Under normal electrical load and environmental conditions, the HDM can overheat inside the Underhood Electrical Center (UEC). This can cause the module to fail and result in a simultaneous loss of both low beam headlights and both daytime running lights (DRLs), often with no warning or prior detectability to the driver. This failure can be intermittent or permanent. No other exterior lights are affected. High beams, turn signals, brake lights, and reverse lights are still operational.General Motors addressed this issue with 2 recalls (14V755 & 15V519) and a special coverage program (N172091910). In view of the recalls and special coverage program implemented by GM and the vehicle high beams continuing to operate, ODI has tentatively concluded that the actions taken by GM mitigate any unreasonable risk to safety posed by HDM failure in the subject vehicles.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances. The ODI reports cited above are available for review online at NHTSA.gov under the identification numbers in the attached document.
On August 15, 2012 General Motors (GM) announced a regional recall action (12V-406) involving model year (MY) 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and MY2005-2007 SAAB 9-7x vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the salt belt states of Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The recall remedy requires the inspection and repair or replacement of the master power window switch, which GM refers to as a driver door module (DDM). At the same time, GM implemented a special coverage program to replace failed DDMs for vehicles registered outside of these states. ODI was not satisfied with GM's exclusion of non-salt belt vehicles and continued its investigation. On June 13, 2013, GM submitted a related recall notification (13V-248) to reclassify the initial special coverage program into a safety recall for vehicles that were not previously repaired under special coverage. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis EA12-004 on June 11, 2012 to further investigate allegations of DDM thermal incidents in model year (MY) 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicles. Thermal incidents involve cases where fire-related events such as smoke and melt are present. ODI has received 170 reports alleging a thermal event occurred. Complainants stated that the DDM melted and in some cases produced odor and/or smoke. Fourteen of these incidents led to a fire where visible flames were reported or the damage extended significantly beyond the DDM. In addition to the 170 reports listed above, ODI received 63 reports alleging the DDM acted erratically or became inoperative. In response to ODI's Information Request (IR), GM provided 619 unique consumer complaints that related to the alleged problem. Seventy-seven of those reports led to a fire with flame, and 4 reported injuries of smoke inhalation and/or slight burns from contact with hot switches. GM also submitted 20,400 warranty claims for replacement of the DDM, most of which involved inoperative switches. The problem condition is caused by fluids, such as rain water, entering the driver's door module and subsequently causing corrosion that could result in an electrical short in the printed circuit board. A short may cause the power door lock and power window switches to function intermittently or become inoperative. However, the electrical short may also cause overheating that could melt components of the door module, producing odor, smoke or in some cases fire with flame. The circuit board was redesigned and GM implemented the new design into vehicle production on May 14, 2007. All failures cited above occurred in vehicles produced before this build date (i.e., with the original design DDM). GM also reported that all MY 2006-2007 GMT360/370 platform vehicles and MY 2005 SAAB 9-7x vehicles utilized the same DDM and therefore ODI expanded the subject population to include these vehicles. This investigation is closed on the basis of GM's announcement of safety recalls 12V-406 and 13V-248. The ODI complaints cited above can be reviewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID, see the attached list for ODI numbers.
The office of defects investigations (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by General Motors (GM) as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 5,089 unique reports indicating an inaccurate fuel level reading while driving.General Motors stated that this condition occurs when the contacts of the fuel sensor wear prematurely. Most of the complaints indicated an empty fuel gauge reading after filling the tank.Less than 10 percent of theODI complaints involved an engine stall incident.During this investigation, GM developed a remedy procedure and issued special coverage bulletin instructing dealers to install a new design fuel level sensor. The bulletin was sent to dealers on August 10, 2011 and the owner letter mailing began on August 15, 2011.See the investigative file for copies of GM's bulletin and owner letter. This preliminary evaluation is closed.
The Office of Defects Investigation has received 668 complaints alleging inaccurate fuel gauge reading while driving in model year 2005-07 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, and Saab 9-7x vehicles.Of the 668 complaints, 58 incidents were alleged to result in a vehicle stall.Of the 58 stalling incidents, 43 complaints reported stalling because the fuel level reading indicated more fuel availability than what is actually in the fuel tank. One complaint alleged a vehicle crash after the vehicle stalled while exiting the interstate, became disabled, and was struck from behind.Summarily, the complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with most complaints received within the past year.A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.
