Certain passenger vehicles have the possibility that the recess retains a rubber seal ring, which IS located at the end of the cylinder body, and may be corroded due to an improper washing process.
Risk and remedy
Risk
In this condition, brake fluid may leak from the seal, or a small amount of air may enter the master cylinder, which could lead to an increase of vehicle stopping distance.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the brake master cylinder and, if necessary, replace the brake master cylinder and booster. the recall began on november 29, 2004. owners should contact toyota at 1-888-270-9371.

Risk and remedy
Risk
When the brake IS applied under this combination of conditions, vacuum assist to the brakes would decrease, and the increased pedal pressure required could lead to an increase in vehicle stopping distance.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the brake booster and front brake pads. owner notification began october 29, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

When you are in the car and the manual locks are locked you can not open the door. You have to unlock it first to open door. Normally a locked door will open when you open the door. this continues to happen. then when you are locked in you can't even unlock the door by rolling the window down and inserting the key to unlock it. It will not work. Therefore I have to crawl through the passenger door and mess with the lock and key to get it unlocked. I feel this IS very dangerous. I see no recalls on this matter. I talked to an auto body shop that says this IS not fixable. *tr

Another vehicle ran a stop sign, and my mother in law was unable to brake fast enough and collided head on. The car had quite a lot of damage, and had to be towed away (for safety reasons). However, the airbag failed to deploy!!!! The collision was enough to incapacitate the radiator and it was head-on (not side or anything like that). Given the circumstances, I would expect the airbag to deploy, and the police were amazed that it didn't. She was wearing a seatbelt, which saved her from the worst. please investigate this, as many vehicles of this type are registering the same issue! *js

The vehicle displayed problems twice in a 24-hour period as follows:thursday, december 8TH, 2011: while attempting to leave a parking lot in reverse (without my foot on the accelerator), the car engine surged as if the accelerator were pressed down to the floor. I immediately pressed hard on the brakes to prevent the car from moving backward uncontrollably at a high speed. I then put the car in park and the engine was still running hard, but it quieted a little. I tried putting the car in drive to test that functionality, and it seemed to be unaffected. I shut off the engine after putting the car in park, re-started it, and tried to move again in reverse. This resulted in the aforementioned engine surge. I decided to drive the car around the parking lot to test for driveability and there were no issues at this point with the car moving forward.friday, december 9TH, 2001: drove the car to work in the morning after letting it run for about ten minutes due to cold outdoor temperatures. After driving the car for about three miles, the engine began surging once my speed was reduced to about 25 mph and continued to run hard when the car was stopped at traffic lights. I had to press very hard on the brake to prevent the car from moving forward at an uncontrolled speed, which potentially could have resulted in injury of myself, another driver, or property. I was able to carefully get the car to my workplace, where I placed the car in park. The engine continued to run hard, as if the accelerator were pressed down with significant pressure. I decided to test the functionality of the reverse gear again; it performed exactly as it did on december 8TH, only more so. When putting the car in park, the engine did not relax and I was forced to shut off the car completely. Because of these malfunctions, I was unable to drive the car home. Note: I do not have factory floor mats. *tr

This IS not related to a specific incident, but I feel I should register a complaint about the brakes on the 2000 toyota echo. the stopping distance required seems excessive to me, and I feel that it would be nearly impossible to ever cause the car to skid (lock up the wheels) using the breaks if you slammed them on in an emergency despite the car not having anti-lock breaks. all recalls have been done on my car as far as I know. there was one recall which involved them replacing the break booster - I noticed dramatically improved breaking performance immediately after this recall - however after about a year maybe, the car returned to its poor breaking performance. new break pads and shoes, and a brake fluid change did not fix the problem. I called toyota a while ago to ask about this, and all they could tell me was that my car already had the break recall done many years ago and that there was no new recall. it may be worth mentioning that I also have a 2001 toyota echo which does not have the same problem - so I definitely can tell the difference and I know that stopping distance IS much worse on my 2000 vehicle. *Tr

2000 toyota echo. Accelerator pedal stuck. It has only happened once, around 263,000 miles. Ironically, this happened a few months ago, before news about the latest recall. This car, and its newer model the yaris, are not part of the recall. Occasionally, I would hear a quiet squeaky sound when using the gas pedal, but it was uncommon. I do all my own car work, but was never able to figure out the cause of the noise... I'm not looking to have anyone contact me - the vehicle IS no longer being driven. I'm just reporting it in case anyone else with an echo reports it. I don't have the vin number handy (at work). If you really need it, you can contact me, and I'll email it to you. It IS the 4 door sedan model. And it was one of the early echo's. Vin serial number was in the 6XXX range. *Tr

While attempting to stop vehicle using full brake pedal force and hand brake the vehicle continued to accelerate. I was unable to stop the car and nearly caused an accident. After shifting the transmission into park the engine continued operating at high speed. The gas pedal was not stuck or used at any time during this time. This occurred on two separate occasions both at highway and city speeds. It seems that there are other reports of similar incidents with this car. No problems were identified by mechanic who couldn't reproduce the problem. *Tr

Speedometer continuously fluctuates when driving between speeds of 0 - 60 mph when vehicle IS cold. Speedometer would read 35 - 45 mph higher than actual speed and would drop lower. Vehicle also drives poorly and shakes during lower speeds. Vehicle was promptly taken to dealership for repairs at which time the dealership notated that they were unable to duplicate the problem so they said there was nothing they could do about the speedometer problem. Continued driving vehicle as it did not seem to effect driving. 1 year and 5 months later, transmission started shifting poorly during cold starts for at least 5 minutes until vehicle warms up. Transmission was flushed by personal mechanic but problem continued. Check engine light came on at which time vehicle was taken to a different dealership. Reported older problem with speedometer as well as new problems with transmission. Dealership stated check engine light was due to rpm sensor malfunction and that the vehicle needed a new transmission and that the speedometer problem was caused by the bad sensor and should have been fixed when the problem was originally discovered. Said bad sensor led to transmission failure. Will take vehicle back to original dealership to have fixed. *tr

Service bulletins

- 11007445The condition known as acid rain is caused by airborne chemicals or particles in the atmosphere, which mix with rainwater, nighttime dew, or high humidity to form acidic compounds. If these contaminants settle and remain on a painted vehicle surface, especially the horizonal areas of the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage can occur. This damage is the result of actual etching of the paint and appears as pitting or water spots. As acid rain droplets on the vehicle surface evaporate, the concentration strength of the acid increases, causing deeper and more rapid damage. This evaporation and corrosive action also occur more rapidly on dark colored cars as direct sun heat increases. It is the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. In areas known for high frequency and/or concentration of acid rain (see Figure 1), frequent vehicle washing during high heat or humidity periods will minimize the potential for paint damage caused by acid rain. It is further recommended that either reverse osmosis or deionized water be used to prevent water spotting.
- 11007444To prevent brake rotor rust from forming during transportation and storage, wheel film will be used instead of a cardboard type of anti-rust cover. The purpose of the wheel film is to shield the disc brake rotor from weather elements and initial rust before the vehicle is delivered to the customer. Consequently, the film should remain on the wheel for as long as possible.
- 11007443Acid rain results from rainwater or other airborne moisture that become acidic due to industrial chemical impurities in the atmosphere. If these acidic compounds settle on an exposed vehicle, especially the horizontal areas such as the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage to the painted surfaces can occur. Acid rain damage can typically be identified on vehicles by the presence of stains on the paint surface that resemble hard water spots. Unlike water spots however, acid rain damage cannot be removed by regular washing procedures. Also, because acid rain can etch and soften the paint, normal buffing or polishing repair procedures should not be attempted. This can cause further damage and result in visible depressions in the paint surface. The following are the three major categories of acid rain damage: Minor damage: requires only buffing to repair. Moderate damage: usually requires neutralizing, color sanding, and buffing. Severe damage: extending beyond 1/2 mil of clearcoat on a pearl, metallic, or solid color, requires neutralization, sanding, and repainting. In cases where acid rain damage is minor, neutralization and buffing with a liquid-type paint finessing product may provide an adequate repair. Only specially formulated products outlined in this bulletin should be used for that purpose. Unfortunately, other than minor damage, there is no simple method of determining the actual extent (depth) of acid penetration other than color sanding a representative affected area until there is no visible etching or depressions, followed by measuring the amount of paint removed with either a magnetic or digital-type film thickness gauge. The procedures in this bulletin are intended for use by qualified body/paint technicians and should not be attempted by inexperienced personnel. It is the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. Perform frequent vehicle washing, as often as daily, during high heat and humidity periods to minimize the potential for paint damage due to acid rain exposure. This is especially important in geographical areas known for high frequency and concentration of acid rain and industrial fallout.

While the quality and durability of paint on Toyota vehicles is continuously being improved, it remains the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. To read, While the quality and durability of paint on Toyota vehicles is continuously being improved, it remains the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to first sale. Perform frequent vehicle washing, as often as daily, during high heat and humidity periods to minimize the potential for paint damage due to acid rain exposure. This is especially important in geographical areas known for high frequency and concentration of acid rain and industrial fallout.

Salt residue also continues to corrode and remain conductive even after a vehicle dries. This bulletin is intended to assist with safe handling and inspection of flood damaged vehicles and to provide basic guidance on likely needed repairs.
