• Engine and engine cooling

  Jul 19, 2006NHTSA 06V26600034,771 vehicles

On certain passenger vehicles, due to improper molding of the resin body of the crankshaft position senor installed on the engine block, engine oil may penetrate the seal and enter the sensor wiring connector. the wire harness connector may not be sufficiently attached to the locking tab of the sensor wiring connector.

  Risk and remedy

  Risk

Engine oil inside the sensor wiring connector could cause expansion due to the heat of the engine and could deform the sensor wiring connector. the connector may become disconnected, which could cause the engine to stall while driving and not be able to be restarted increasing the risk of a crash.

  Remedy

Dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor free of charge. the recall began on july 26, 2006. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

  Oct 1, 2002NHTSA 02V26800059,394 vehicles

On certain passenger vehicles, if the vehicle IS driven under repeated start and stop operation in low ambient temperatures and in deep snow, there IS a possibility that snow could accumulate in large quantities inside the rear wheel and freeze. the snow frozen inside the wheel could contact the rear brake line during wheel rotation.

  Risk and remedy

  Risk

If this condition occurs frequently, the rear brake line could be damaged, which could result in leakage of brake fluid, causing a decrease in brake effectiveness.

  Remedy

Dealers will replace the rear brake lines. owner notification began november 9, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Low beam headlights were engaged using the dimmer switch located on the steering column per normal operations. the low beams switched to high beams display. unable to disengage without totally switching off the lights. the high beam indicator appeared on the dashboard display as well. this event occurred when the temperatures were at or below 20 degrees fahrenheit and the car had been parked for about 8 hours (in a park and ride lot). once the interior cabin warmed up after about 20 minutes I was able to "jiggle" the lights back to low beams.

Stuck throttle on jan 19TH, 2012 when accelerator pressed to floor. Recovered by pulling up with foot. Tried to reproduce the same day and was able to. Took to dealer (boulder toyota) on jan 30TH. They claimed they were unable to reproduce but thought carpet might be interfering with foot pedal and recommended I change all of carpet in car at a cost of $1200. I asked them to just trim the card around the pedal, and they told me they couldn't do that. Tried to reproduce after dealer visit and was unable. Inspected on feb 3RD, and it appeared like carpet might have been pulled back around hole in floor. I pushed it back into position, and then tried to reproduce the stuck throttle and was able. *tr

I was driving down a 4 lane highway (us 29 s), when a car tried to turn into the median three cars ahead of me. One car swerved to avoid the front two vehicles. When they did I was able to see the cars trying to stop. I slammed on my brakes, by the time I did it was too late. So going about 65 with about 50 feet of stopping distance I guess I was going 40 - 50 mph. I could not move to the other lane since there was tractor trailer in the other lane. So I rear ended the vehicle in front of me. Impacting on the driver side front corner. my airbags failed to deploy. The following day inspecting the damage, the air bag sensor was right next to the damaged area and should have been able to pick up the impact. *Jb

My boy friend was driving my 2002 toyota echo 2-door coupe. we were driving in the middle lane on the outerloop of 495 (maryland), right past the connecticut/kensington exit when traffic began to slow down (50mph). the mazda 626 in front of us suddenly slammed on his breaks so my boyfriend slammed on his breaks when he noticed a chevy malibu coming full speed behind us with the driver unconscious at the steering wheel. he glanced to the side and saw no one coming on his left so he turned the steering wheel to change lanes. the toyota echo kept going straight since slowing down at that speed, the car was skidding toward the mazda 626 quite fast. since he was slowing down quite rapidly and the chevy malibu behind us didn't seem to be slowing down, it was inevitable that the chevy malibu slammed into the back of our toyota echo. the impact crushed the trunk past the gas tank. after that we were lurched forward into the mazda 626. in turn hitting the car in front of him and so forth. It didn't end there because the driver behind us was unconscious, the chevy malibu kept slamming into the back of our toyota 2-3 times like a bumper car until we finally came to a stop. needless to say, the toyota echo suffered severe frontal and rear damage, yet the air bags did not deploy. when the paramedics arrived on the scene, they were shocked to see that with such severe damage to the car, that the air bags did not deploy. the insurance adjuster has told me that the car IS a total loss and not worth the cost of repairing as it would exceed $10,000 in charges. my main concern IS that although we all survived the crash without serious injury, why would such an impact not make the air bags deploy?*ak

While driving at approximately 70 mph on a flat, stright highway in light-to-moderate traffic conditions on a road with no obstructions or visible fluid/oil spots my 2002 toyota echo suddenly and sharply veered right. I attempted to correct my trajectory, but the car swerved completely out of control, final turning counter-clockwise to hit the concrete median nearly-head-on, with majority of impact on right front of car. the recoil of the impact turned the car so that it was completely 180 degrees from the driving direction on the freeway. the front end of the car was pushed in, airbags deployed, the hood pushed in and up and the driver's door would not open. no injury occured from the crash. I was not under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, was not talking on a cell phone and had both hand on the wheel at the time of the accident. it occured during clear, sunny weather at 4:00 pm on may 7, 2004. the car has been deemed "totalled" by my insurance company and no repairs have been done.*ak

Service bulletins

Technical service bulletins and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about this vehicle. Ask a dealer for the full document by its number.

• 11007445The condition known as acid rain is caused by airborne chemicals or particles in the atmosphere, which mix with rainwater, nighttime dew, or high humidity to form acidic compounds. If these contaminants settle and remain on a painted vehicle surface, especially the horizonal areas of the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage can occur. This damage is the result of actual etching of the paint and appears as pitting or water spots. As acid rain droplets on the vehicle surface evaporate, the concentration strength of the acid increases, causing deeper and more rapid damage. This evaporation and corrosive action also occur more rapidly on dark colored cars as direct sun heat increases. It is the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. In areas known for high frequency and/or concentration of acid rain (see Figure 1), frequent vehicle washing during high heat or humidity periods will minimize the potential for paint damage caused by acid rain. It is further recommended that either reverse osmosis or deionized water be used to prevent water spotting.
• 11007444To prevent brake rotor rust from forming during transportation and storage, wheel film will be used instead of a cardboard type of anti-rust cover. The purpose of the wheel film is to shield the disc brake rotor from weather elements and initial rust before the vehicle is delivered to the customer. Consequently, the film should remain on the wheel for as long as possible.
• 11007443Acid rain results from rainwater or other airborne moisture that become acidic due to industrial chemical impurities in the atmosphere. If these acidic compounds settle on an exposed vehicle, especially the horizontal areas such as the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage to the painted surfaces can occur. Acid rain damage can typically be identified on vehicles by the presence of stains on the paint surface that resemble hard water spots. Unlike water spots however, acid rain damage cannot be removed by regular washing procedures. Also, because acid rain can etch and soften the paint, normal buffing or polishing repair procedures should not be attempted. This can cause further damage and result in visible depressions in the paint surface. The following are the three major categories of acid rain damage: Minor damage: requires only buffing to repair. Moderate damage: usually requires neutralizing, color sanding, and buffing. Severe damage: extending beyond 1/2 mil of clearcoat on a pearl, metallic, or solid color, requires neutralization, sanding, and repainting. In cases where acid rain damage is minor, neutralization and buffing with a liquid-type paint finessing product may provide an adequate repair. Only specially formulated products outlined in this bulletin should be used for that purpose. Unfortunately, other than minor damage, there is no simple method of determining the actual extent (depth) of acid penetration other than color sanding a representative affected area until there is no visible etching or depressions, followed by measuring the amount of paint removed with either a magnetic or digital-type film thickness gauge. The procedures in this bulletin are intended for use by qualified body/paint technicians and should not be attempted by inexperienced personnel. It is the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. Perform frequent vehicle washing, as often as daily, during high heat and humidity periods to minimize the potential for paint damage due to acid rain exposure. This is especially important in geographical areas known for high frequency and concentration of acid rain and industrial fallout.

The procedures in this bulletin are intended for use by qualified body/paint technicians and should not be attempted by inexperienced personnel. While the quality and durability of paint on Toyota vehicles is continuously being improved, it remains the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. To read, While the quality and durability of paint on Toyota vehicles is continuously being improved, it remains the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to first sale. Perform frequent vehicle washing, as often as daily, during high heat and humidity periods to minimize the potential for paint damage due to acid rain exposure. This is especially important in geographical areas known for high frequency and concentration of acid rain and industrial fallout.
• 11003594The condition known as acid rain is caused by airborne chemicals or particles in the atmosphere, which mix with rainwater, nighttime dew, or high humidity to form acidic compounds. While Toyota paint quality, durability, and resistance to environmental factors is continuously being improved, it remains the responsibility of the dealer to protect and maintain the vehicles paint finish from the time of arrival at the dealership until retail delivery to the customer. In areas known for high frequency and/or concentration of acid rain (see Figure 1), frequent vehicle washing during high heat or humidity periods will minimize the potential for paint damage caused by acid rain. It is further recommended that either reverse osmosis or deionized water be used to prevent water spotting.
• 11003592To prevent brake rotor rust from forming during transportation and storage, wheel film will be used instead of a cardboard type of anti-rust cover. The purpose of the wheel film is to shield the disc brake rotor from weather elements and initial rust before the vehicle is delivered to the customer. Consequently, the film should remain on the wheel for as long as possible. SUPERSESSION NOTICE The information contained in this bulletin supersedes Service Bulletin No. PD017-04. The entire bulletin has been updated.
• 11003589Acid rain results from rainwater or other airborne moisture that become acidic due to industrial chemical impurities in the atmosphere. This Service Bulletin provides best practice procedures for vehicle pulling complaint, diagnosis, and repair for 2002 ? 2021 model year Toyota vehicles. This information supplements Repair Manual procedures when the symptoms are: ?Vehicle Pulling: The vehicle moves to the right or left when the driver holds the steering wheel while driving straight ahead without exerting steering effort. ?Steering Wheel Off Center: The vehicle travels straight, but the steering wheel is not pointed straight ahead. The vehicle is not pulling. Before repairing a vehicle pulling to one side, it is necessary to clearly identify the cause of the pulling condition. Frequently, pulling to one side is diagnosed as a wheel alignment concern. However, the actual cause may be related to the lateral force generated by the tires, vehicle damage, road crown or worn components. Performing a wheel alignment when tire force is the cause could result in the wheel alignment being set at a value outside of specifications. This could then cause other problems such as uneven tire wear, etc. A customer may notice a pull to the left when in the left lanes of travel and notice a pull to the right or no pull when traveling in the right lanes of travel on the very same section of roadway. This road crown effect is environmental and cannot be corrected with suspension adjustments or any other wheel or tire modification discussed in this bulletin.
