These records cover every 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
3 recalls name the 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Newest first.
Federal-mogul IS recalling certain replacement control arm assemblies, part numbers k7425, 10945, fa4510x, k7427, 10946, and fa4611x, sold for use on various passenger vehicles listed above. the ball joint on the control arm assembly can fail causing the ball stud to wear through the control arm housing resulting in noise and/or separation of the ball stud…
If there IS a separation of the ball stud from the housing, the driver can loose steering control, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
Federal-mogul will notify owners of record and replace the affected control arms free of charge. the safety recall began on january 28, 2011. owners may contact federal-mogul at 1-877-489-6659.
Qualis automotive IS recalling certain aftermarket ball joints sold for use on certain passenger vehicles. the socket may have been excessively hardened which could cause it to crack near the retaining ring groove allowing the ball stud to separate under impact load. the subject ball joints were sold as four part numbers, d10945, d10946, g10945, and…
Separation of the ball stud from the socket of the ball joint housing would allow the control arm to collapse and the wheel to fold in causing loss of steering control, possibly resulting in a crash.
Qualis automotive will replace the ball joints free of charge. the safety recall began on november 9, 2009. owners may contact qualis automotive at 1-800-493-4128.
On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. an inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.
Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
Dealers will install a new load-limiting push rod into the floor shifter lever of the affected vehicles. owner notification began on june 14, 2004. owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Takata recall. I am having several issues with the whole braking system, as it IS very difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of having no brakes. I have no type of brakes at all. When taken off parking, even with foot on brake, car will begin to move. This seems to be very common in these cars. The fuel pump was also replaced as it was letting less power go through. This happens as the car sits in parking, as well as, when driving. Also, the mechanic that looked at the car said that the pump needed to be replaced due to possible fire hazards. The lights flicker on and off by themselves, sometimes radio works, sometimes, lights get stuck on.
Driving down road, around 10 miles a hour, the car suddenly went clunk on the left side, and would not move. Got out to check, and the entire piece that holds the tire on was laying on the interior of the tire rim.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chrysler sebring convertible. While driving 10 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle restarted and the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (chrysler jeep dodge RAM 24, 1020 belmont st, brockton, ma, 02301) where it was diagnosed that there was a fracture in the camshaft timing and that the transmission failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer stated that it was a safety hazard to work on the vehicle due to its condition. The vehicle could not be repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
Car shakes at 75 miles per hour..from the front end.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chrysler sebring convertible. While driving approximately 15 mph, the front end of the vehicle collapsed to the ground. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the front driver's side lower ball joint and axle fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign number: 09e056000 (suspension) however, the recall expired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 129,000. The vin was unavailable. updated 10/3/2017*cn
Car will stall at any speed. will restart after about 15 tries. happens after filling tank. 1ST thought it was bad gas. But tried different stations. same problem. sporadic. often happens when I shut off car and then attempt to start it again a few minutes later. doesn't seem to be a problem when the car IS cold. very dangerous situation on high speed roadways. *tr
Front seat belts, driver and passenger lock up and will not release. it IS getting worse, in the last 3 days, it has locked up twice and currently they are lock and will not release from the seats to be used *tr
Both front seat belts lock up and do not release. It does this intermittently but mostly does not work properly. When they do work they tighten & tighten to the point of almost being painful. Mechanics do not know why this should happen unless it IS the seat belt control module which can only be done by a dealer. One word "expensive!" this IS a safety & law issue and should be the responsibility of the manufacturer for faulty safety product and operation. after my research I see many of the same issues with the seat belts over and over. This IS a repetitive problem. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chrysler sebring convertible. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the failure was unable to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 68,000.
This car IS a death trap and needs to be investigated. Car will lose all power, steering, and brakes while traveling at speeds up to 55mph. This IS very dangerous and I almost killed myself because of this issue. I have taken the car to 3 mechanics and they cannot diagnose the problem. Chrysler won't even return my calls regarding the issue, which I've researched and found hundreds of others with this same problem. This IS a huge safety hazard and chrysler should take responsibility for whatever it IS that IS causing this to happen. I'm wondering if I can take legal action against them. This IS absolutely unacceptable. *tr
I was starting the car - it started ran for 30 to 45 seconds then stalled. I turned the motor over again and the car burs into flames. The car burned to the ground before the fire department got there. *tr
I buy this car on april 2011, he was working good but I take the car to program the pager to open doors and trunk to bakersfield chrysler dealer, they did not program the pager but they change the shift part who was on recall, from that moment to this date the car works for two or three days and stop, I change already the spark plug rotor distributor cap, camshaft sensor, ignition relay, wires and distributor, and the car continue stop. I used all my money I'm disable and have vehicle to move. *tr
Engine cuts out while driving at any speed. Sometimes immediately resumes, sometimes car sits for up to 45 minutes to presumably cool off. Started to happen once per week, and within a few weeks was once per day. Presents a problem while driving at high speed on the highway or making local road maneuvers as power steering and power brakes loose power. mechanic examined and concluded the fuel pump and or fuel pump wiring was faulty. *tr
Intermittently both front seat belts are locked into the seat belt retractor and can not be used. took it to a mechanic that could not figure out how to fix it. the car IS a convertible and should never be driven without proper restraints. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chrysler sebring convertible. The contact started the ignition and attempted to engage the front driver side seat belt, the shoulder belt and lap belt webbing would not extract. The front passenger side belt exhibited the identical failure. The contact was able to manually secure the seat belt with tape and a clip. An authorized dealer was notified and the technician stated that the failure was contributed to the timing module. the contact was concerned about the safety risk involved. the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 173,000. Updated 09/22/10. *Lj updated 09/23/10
I have a 1999 chrysler sebring which has had the ball joint come out of both sides of the vehicle of the front 2 wheels about 6 months apart. This has caused damage to my vehicle which I have repaired. I am very concerned about my safety and the safety of my family because this last time I was about a mile away from getting on the highway, which could have been deadly. I feel that this IS a safety issue and wonder about recalls and if I should be reimbursed. The tow to my home was $106, the tow to the mechanic was $65 and the mechanic bill was $303. This IS just the drivers side. This happened on the passenger side as well and I feel I should be reimbursed for both. Documents of these charges can definitely be provided if needed. I am concerned about this happening again, not just my own car but anyone else that may be driving one of these vehicles. Please let me know either way. Thank you. *Tr
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chrysler sebring convertible. The contact stated the seat belt rollers on the front driver and passenger sides were locked up and the belts could not be extended to secure an occupant. The manufacturer stated there were no recalls for the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were approximately 170,000.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chrysler sebring convertible. The contact stated that the front driver and passengers seat belts would retract but would not release. The dealer was unable to provide a reason for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 124,000.
Seat belt safety lock sticking. The front seat belt on both sides have a retracting mechanism. It allows the seat belt to retract into the shoulder when not in use. It also locks in place to secure the passenger. Sometimes the seat belt gets stuck and won't release. This prevents the use of the seat belt. This IS both unsafe and in some states, illegal. *tr
Front passenger side ball joint failure. While turning right into a shopping plaza the passenger side front ball joint failed on my wife's 1999 chrysler sebring convertible limited. This car at the time had less than 61,000 miles on it. The car was purchased as a used car the day before. The car was safety checked by the dealers mechanic before the sale with no issues noted that were not repaired. I understand through a search of the nhtsa database that there are other reports of ball joint failures and a safety recall on the coupe model of the sebring for this failure. I would say given the mileage on this used car that a similar recall IS warranted since this car exhibits the same type of failure with little warning of a problem existing. This IS a safety issue that needs to be rectified by the manufacture due to a clearly faulty design. Fortunately in this case no one was injured nor was damage done to anything other than the car. *Tr
1999 sebring convertible seat belts not working properly.both seat belts will not come out to be buckeled. Could be seat belt timing module located under center console. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chrysler sebring convertible. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and almost caused a crash. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer, but they were unable to locate the cause of the failure. he believed that there may have been an issue with the fuel system. he removed the fuel tank from the vehicle and found burnt wires, which were controlling the fuel pump. the contact replaced the fuel pump wires and the fuel pump itself, but currently the vehicle will not start. he stated that the dealer overcharges him during every visit and they cannot diagnose the failure. the contact believes that it IS a manufacturer defect that should be recalled. the failure mileage was 81,000 and current mileage was 110,000.
Trunk lid will not stay up. problem began intermittently at approximately 10,000 miles, possibly dependent on air temperature; by approximately 20,000 miles trunk lid will not stay up without being propped. numerous injuries to head, neck and back, over the eleven years I have owned vehicle. *Tr
Dealing with this noise in my front end for 4-5 years maybe even longer. *Tr
I own a 1999 chrysler sebring convertible that all the seat belts lock in the retracted position for no apparent reason. This occurs randomly and lasts for a week or more at a time. I use the car very little because of this. The local dealer mike famous (now closed) said it would be about $700 to repair. I think this IS unacceptable since this IS of safety in nature. I consider seat belts a valuable protective device that should not fail like this ever. I don't have any chance of using seat belts when I want to use the car. If I go out to use the vehicle and the belts are locked I don't use it. Not to mention seat belt laws and the ticket I would get . *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The manufacturer reports above are based on daimlerchrysler?s (dc) analysis of model year (my) 1998 (population = 356,384) and 1999 (population = 486,948) ja, JX and lh family subject vehicle data (earlier mys excluded).the population number includes all mys.the precise number of duplicates between odi and dc reports cannot be determined due to missing or incomplete information.the fatality incident involved an elderly person who attempted to stop a roll away vehicle and received fatal injuries.odi also gathered information on my 1997-99 prowler vehicles in this investigation. The prowler vehicles were manufactured with a different design shifter mechanism (the shift lever IS shorter).there are no complaints of prowler interlock failure in odi?s database, and dc has received no reports either.the prowler IS excluded from the recall scope.the investigation involved a condition where the interlock system could fail (or be made inoperative by the operator) during vehicle use, possibly inadvertently.the interlock system IS required under fmvss 114.with the transmission in the park position and the ignition key off, the combined action of pressing the shift button and pulling the shift lever rearward may result in the operator overcoming the interlock system and cause the mechanical linkage of the system to disconnect.when this occurs, there IS no overt indication to an operator that the system IS defeated, and an increased risk of vehicle roll-away exists.under recall 04v021, dc will replace damaged shift mechanisms, and will install on all vehicles a device which inhibits the operator?s ability to overcome the interlock and defeat the system.beginning with my 2000, dc incorporated a brake and transmission shifter interlock (btsi) system into the subject vehicles.introduction of btsi involved design changes to the shift mechanism, one of which resulted in reduced mechanical advantage (rma) of the shift button.the rma shifter requires increased forces to overcome the interlock system, making the shifter less susceptible to damage.
Three of the manfacturer complaints and two of the manufacturer crashes reported above were duplicates of odi reports.the majority of crashes occurred after operators parked the vehicle without engaging park gear position; a non-functional ignition-park interlock system subsequently failed to prevent key removal before the operators exited the vehicle.most of the crashes were minor and involved minor property damage.four of the injury incidents occurred when unattended children moved the gearshift from the park position causing the vehicle to roll away, one injury occurred when the operator was struck by a roll-away vehicle after parking and exiting.all injuries were relatively minor.a significant number of interlock system failures appear to be related to disengagement of the interlock pin that rides in the interlock lever slot within the shift mechanism.an engineering analysis will be opened to further study interlock system failures.
