Excessive corrosion may result in the left or right rear suspension lower link bracket becoming detached from the frame, which can affect vehicle handling and potentially cause a crash.
Dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. for vehicles in which little or no corrosion IS found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. for vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. in the rare event the corrosion IS so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be appropriate, a repurchase offer will be extended to the vehicle's owner. all inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. for vehicles older than 10 years, isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle IS presented to an isuzu service facility, or honda dealer (as applicable), dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued. the safety recall began on december 10, 2010. isuzu owners may contact isuzu at 1-800-255-6727. honda owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 honda passport. The contact stated that the check engine and transmission warning indicators were constantly illuminated. While driving various speeds and attempting to turn right or left, it required the contact to use extra effort to maneuver the vehicle. Additionally, there was smoke coming from the front passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the transmission, catalytic converter, and steering assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 139,000.
The engine and transmission light came on and have been flashing, while I was on the street, then the steering wheel does not turn smoothly and the car produces noise when turning to the left or right or reversing. And while running, it produces smoke
TL* the contact owns a 2000 honda passport. While the contact's wife was driving 5 mph over a bump in the road, the suspension fractured. She lost control of the vehicle and later noticed that the frame was rusted. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to honda of frontenac (885 s lindbergh blvd, st. Louis, mo 63131, (314) 994-1400), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was towed to manguest honda (5935 s lindbergh blvd, st louis, mo 63123, 314-649-1200) where it was diagnosed that the frame needed to be replaced due to excessive rust. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The failure mileage was 140,000.
My vehicle has been at a honda dealership for 3 weeks. It has damage related to an active recall. The entire back part of the frame IS rusted, to the point there IS no 'meat' to fix this issue. We are now getting zero response from honda or the dealership, and need assistance in a positive resolution. The honda case # IS: 10v436000. this vehicle when towed had tires separating from the body, and IS way beyond a patch-fix. I filled up the tank, apparently, the weight caused a separation in the frame. when stationary, a back tire separated from the frame when the tow truck attempted to load the vehicle. the extent of frame damage renders this un-fixable...but now our honda rep and our dealership service manager will not return phone calls. please help!
My car IS involved in the recall 10v436000 buy back program but the dealers as well as honda itself will not follow the nhtsa guide lines they are making excuses and lying to me about responsibility this car has 111,000 miles on it and should last a very long time but the frame IS completely rusted and cannot be driven and the electrical problems are all over because of the frame movement . I believe that there are other recalls on this vehicle but honda refuses to take responsibility for anything .
Nhtsa recall 10v436000 performed in early 2011. "Performed link bracket inspection and stage 1 repair op: 4195a2" now, 4 years later. The frame IS rusted and crumbled/broken behind the rear differential. picture of this specific passport uploaded to wikipedia honda passport page, titled "frame rust (2000 passport)" . *tr
Just read web info on fuel gauge not reading correctly after gas tank IS about half full on honda passports. My vehicle's fuel gauge moves significantly on turns and at times check engine light comes when tank IS about gas 1/2 full. This just started happening when the vehicle had approx 87K miles on it. when gas tanked IS topped off - usually around 8-10 gals - everything starts working fine again. heard honda may have announced a recalled this for honda passports but up to year model1999. But given the same symptom and just started happening on my year 2000 vehicle ..thinking all years should be included. I have not talked to dealer yet. honda maintains a great reputation and should offer an expanded recall. given the age, the vehicle IS like new and otherwise runs fantastic and I have low milage on the vehicle. Would imagine the same parts used in 1999 passports (fuel sending unit/lever) IS same in the year 2000. thank you for further research and information to honda passport owners. *tr
I was driving about 25 mph and someone pulled right in front of me requiring me to slam on the brakes. I heard something snap or break in the rear of the car. it was very hard to steer, the car seemed to wiggle and sway. I pulled over as soon as I could, within a half block. I looked for a flat tire, nothing seemed wrong so I tried to drive home. there was a horrible rubber scraping sound from the left rear. I got out again and saw that the tire was wedged against the wheel well. I called a wrecker and had it towed to my mechanic. as soon as he saw it the mechanic called me and said, "your car IS totaled, the frame IS rotted out." so I had to have the car towed back to my home. my neighbor also owns a 2000 honda passport and he told me that there had been a recall for the frame, suspension for my model and year. I found the recall #10v436000 at http://www.hondaproblems.com/recalls/passport/2000/ I called honda on monday, december 9 to report that I had never received a recall notice and asked if they could help me. I had read about a buyout program. the rep said that the recall was only good for two years and had expired, there was nothing she could do to help me. this IS a serious part of the car, had I been on the interstate I could have had a horrific accident. honda knew they had a problem, how can they limit the repair to two years? there were 149,992 vehicles involved in this recall, IS there anyone that can help me? *tr
I am the 2ND owner of this vehicle. It IS in great condition everywhere other than the rear frame. I had no idea how bad the rust was under the vehicle in the rear. I bought the SUV 1 year ago in august for $2700 with 121,000 miles. I took excellent care of it & on 10/3/13 I was making a right hand turn onto a highway which was a 55 mph speed limit. As I accelerated my front end wobbled back & forth bad and at 25 mph my SUV darted to the right shoulder of the road & I slammed on the brakes missing the guard rail. By 1 foot. I had to have it towed home due to my driver side rear tire was pinchedinto my rear bumper. My body shop guy said the rear trailing arm rusted right off the frame & esd most likely not fixable unless I want to spend over $1500 to have the frame cut out & try to find good metal to weld too if there IS any. An the other side IS bad too. I had no idea this could happen &i had my passport at the honda dealership. 6 months ago & asked the garage boss if there was any recalls the vehicle missef or if there IS anything I should. Watch out for & he said no. I could have been killed if I would have been going faster. How does a 13 year old vehicle rust out that fast? Honda should be held responsible for selling unsafe vehicles. *tr
I was told about a frame recall on my 2000 passport, I called honda directly and asked them to end send me 49.00 + tx to have my car looked at. I paid, they tell me my car does fall under the recall but I would have to pay for repairs, and they also tell me that my car IS unsafe to drive. Come to find out the person that owned my vehicle was told back in feb 2012 that the frame was bad, so they turned around and sold the car, it went to auction and not disclosed to the person I bought the car from in may 2012. I took the car to have it aligned the dealership would not align the car because the frame in the front was rusted and has holes in it, and now we have discovered that the rear frame was filled with grape foam and covered over with undercoating that covered up the holes in the frame. What do I do, honda will not back this vehicle or honor the recall. I do not have alot of money and can not afford to just purchase another vehicle to get back and forth to work. I work for a dealership in ithaca and when toyota had their frame recalls, people were put into rental cars, and the vehicles were fixed or bought back. Honda does not seem to care!!!!! What do I do? *js
TL* the contact owns a 2000 honda passport. The contact stated that the frame was corroded in the rear on both sides of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was inspected and declared unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was made aware of the issue but would not offer assistance because nhtsa campaign number: 10v436000 (suspension) was expired. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
The underside frame of my 2000 honda passport IS so rusted, a sway bar connected to the axle broke free. I have been told by my mechanic and by a honda dealer that the rust IS so bad, there IS nothing to attach the sway bar to. the bar attached to the frame (which this sway bar IS attached to) was fixed in the recall 1.5 years ago. it IS still attached to the frame, so honda will not fix this issue or give me compensation for my car. I believe it IS all related and the recall did not work to fix the suspension issues. my honda dealer basically told me I had to deal with corporate and to come pick up the car. I was shocked by this as the car was unsafe to drive and a potential safety hazard. when my wife pressed the service manager, he then said the car should not be driven. as for the recall, my honda dealer wrote down the wrong vin number on my invoice, so they thought the car was a 1999 passport. if you read the recall, there IS a difference on how the dealer should handle a 10 year old car versus an 11 year old car. according to honda corporate, this would not actually affect how my car was fixed by the recall. but it gets better. the recall work was subbed out to a 3RD party for a stage 3 repair. no one at corporate or the dealer will tell me if this was authorized by corporate, as someone at the nhtsa told me was proper protocol. and I can't believe that no one at the dealership, when the recall work was done, told me how bad the underside of my car was. could this be because if they didn't do the recall work they don't get paid? there IS no conflict of interest here at all. I talked with corporate a week ago and asked them to have the honda corporate district manager for my dealership call me. he hasn't called. honda won't back up the honda name on this broken down isuzu. *tr
I purchased this vehicle on the 5TH of july 2013. Took the vehicle home and noticed a badly defective tire on the right rear and that the brakes were having issues which included poor stopping and a vibration in the back. I got down on my hands and knees to look at the tire and then noticed large rotted holes in frame by tires. I then laid on my back and noticed that the entire frame was rotted out from front to back. This IS so bad that I can push holes through the frame with just my fingers. I have since gotten online and discovered that there has been a recall issued on this vehicle for a control arm bracket that breaks off of the frame due to rot. This issue has far exceeded that recall and I am wanting to know what would be my best course of action from here? I am now afraid to even move this vehicle out of my drive way due to safety concerns for myself or others around me. Thank you so much for your time on this issue and I look forward to a response from you on this matter.... TL* the contact owns a 2000 honda passport. The contact stated that while having regular maintenance done, he was notified that the vehicle was deemed unrepairable due to corrosion of the frame. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle had surpassed the statute of limitations for nhtsa campaign number: 10v436000 (suspension). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 100,00.
While driving the car loses power and stalls out it will do this on the highway and local roads at all speeds. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2000 honda passport. The contact stated that he received a recall in regards to nhtsa campaign ID number 10v436000 (suspension:rear). The contact had the repairs done approximately one year ago. The contact stated that the repair done to one side of the suspension did not make the vehicle any safer and believed that it should have been installed on both sides. The manufacturer was contacted and they ensured him that the vehicle was done according to the safety standards and regulations. The failure mileage was unknown. The current mileage was approximately 147,000. The vin was unavailable.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 honda passport. The contact stated that the frame was rusted and corroded. The failure prevented the vehicle from passing state inspection. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for routine inspection and the contact was informed of the rusted frame. the dealer informed him that there were no recalls for the failure and offered no further assistance. The manufacturer was notified who advised the contact that the failure was beyond repair and offered no further assistance. the failure mileage was 127,000.
I took my car to a mechanic last week because I was having to put brake fluid in it. I thought maybe I had a leak. The mechanic called me back and said I wouldn't drive that car anymore. It has excessive corrosion underneath. The frame IS broke at least in one spot and the back IS about to break into and come up through the floorboard. This IS my only vehicle and I have to drive it. I don't know what to do. I just can't understand. I know that I live in a somewhat wintry area, but I am fanatical about keeping my car cleaned. The vehicle IS only 12 years old. My husband has a subaru that's almost 20 years old and has 272000 miles on it. Its no where near rusted like mine. I know that there was a recall on 2001-2002 honda passports for this reason but year 2000 wasn't involved in that. I definitely think that it should have been. You would never believe my undercarriage unless you look at it. Please help me to get some kind of help with this issue. I found a forum online and there IS a lot more people with this same problem. *tr
TL* the contact owns 2000 honda passport. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the rear of the vehicle fishtailed back and forth. The vehicle was inspected by a private mechanic and the mechanic stated that the frame had excessive rust and corrosion. The corrosion and rust was causing all fluids to leak from the vehicle onto the ground. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired by an authorized dealer. The failure mileage was 145,000 and the current mileage was 148,000.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 honda passport. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign ID number 10v436000 (suspension:rear). Thirteen months later while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle started to swerve abnormally. The contact exited the vehicle and discovered that the driver side trailing arm was fractured. The vehicle was slowly driven to an independent mechanic where they advised him that the failure was not related to the prior recall repair. The driver side trailing arm was replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 119,550.
Frame on vehicle was deemed "unrepairable" by local honda dealership, due to recall on vehicle. After consulting legal angle found that there IS a 10 year window on car makers backing their product. Ironic that the recall came out after 10 years, honda knew of this very, very dangerous situation way before the 10 year window but did nothing. The frame on this car literally was close to completely flying off, and soon that will cause severe injury not only to owners of that model car but also others involved. Honda did nothing to try and buy out owners, they just want the vehicles off the road to eliminate their responsibilities in any lawsuit that may come from this faulty equipment. *tr
As driving my passport I notice swaying feeling all over the road and it IS very loud when ever you hit the slightest bump. Driving at a very low speed IS the only way to drive. The frame IS rusted bad. It IS full of holes and missing peices. Currently at honda dealer waiting for the case manager to contact me as it IS not safe to drive according to honda america. So far offered no rental or nothing just no car. *tt
I had to junk my honda passport because the bracket that held the wheel to the frame detached due to corrosion which I was told would not be safe if attempted to repair it. Two yrs later there IS a recall for that exact thing. How IS it possible that honda claims the could fix this when no one else could and why will they not compensate for my loss. Sorry but an eight yr old car should not just fall apart. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2000 honda passport. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign ID number 10v436000 (suspension: rear). The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the brackets were repaired under the recall. The contact was informed that the frame, which was connected to the brackets, was severely rusted, corroded, and showed signs of breakage. The dealer would not repair the frame because it was not covered under the recall. The contact also stated that after the recall repair, fuel would leak from the bottom of the fuel tank while refueling. The dealer was notified and the contact was informed that they would send a tow truck to pick the vehicle up. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 132,000. The vin was unknown.
I have a 2000 honda passport and I just had a recall done on it for the brackets. The brackets were installed over the rusted frame. Stage 4 repairs were done on my passport. Its not only the frame rails that rusted away. Mileage on vehicle IS 132000. I have noticed the entire frame from front to back rusting. This IS a serious issue. Can and will cause an accident or death. I fear one day the while driving the frame will fall off and cause a serious injury. little pieces from the frame fall and crumble. *Tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On September 22, 2010, Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America, Inc (Isuzu) submitted a Defect Information Report (NHTSA Recall 10V-436) to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration affecting approximately 120,000 model year (MY) 1998-2002 Isuzu Rodeo and Honda Passport vehicles and MY 2002 Isuzu Axiom vehicles originally sold, or currently operated, in the following states:Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin. All vehicle owners will receive the recall notification.Vehicles 10 years of age or younger will be provided with a free remedy. For vehicles older than 10 years, Isuzu will offer a free remedy provided the vehicle is presented to an Isuzu service facility or a Honda dealer (as applicable) no later than twelve (12) months after the date of mailing of the notification letter to the owner. The report describes a condition where vehicles operated in states using certain road deicing materials may exhibit excessive corrosion which may result in the left or right rear suspension lower link bracket becoming detached from the frame.According to Isuzu a detached lower link may affect vehicle handling and potentially cause a crash. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed complaint data and found that 114 of the 115 (99%) alleged complete lower link separations from the frame occurred in vehicles originally sold or operated in a state covered by the recall. Of these complaints 2 involved alleged crashes and 21 involved alleged loss of control incidents. The alleged crashes and loss of control incidents all occurred in vehicles operated in a state covered by the safety recall.Isuzu's recall instructs dealers to inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area to determine if corrosion is present. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the lower link bracket area and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. For vehicles with no visible signs of corrosion, dealers with apply anti-corrosion material to reduce the likelihood of corrosion developing in the future. Based on Isuzu's safety recall, this Engineering Analysis is closed.A copy of the recall may be assessed on NHTSA's website using the reference number above.
During preliminary evaluation pe09-030, isuzu motors america, inc (isuzu) noted two primary differences once the rear suspension lower link separation occurs between the alleged defect (separation of the lower link from the frame) of this investigation and a safety defect involving lower link separation from the rear axle addressed by isuzu in safety recall 00v-058.in the case of the defect condition identified in recall 00v-058, isuzu stated that the attachment bolt could detach fully, causing separation of the lower link from the rear axle possibly creating a loss of vehicle control. Isuzu also stated that this condition occurs early in the service life of the vehicle.in this investigation isuzu noted lower link separation from the frame IS a progressive corrosion issue with prior warning to consumers.isuzu also stated that in the event of a lower link separation from the frame, the vehicle IS still controllable and can be safely stopped. The office of defect investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by isuzu and america honda motor company, inc (honda), as well as vehicle owner questionnaires submitted to odi from consumers.in total, there were 60 unique reports of lower link separations from the frame including 1 alleged crash and 7 loss of vehicle control incidents that may be related to the alleged defect.most of these complaints indicated that there was no warning prior to the link separation.this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea09-018) to further assess the scope, frequency and risk to motor vehicle safety of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.
