2 recalls name the 1999 Infiniti QX4. Newest first.
Nissan IS recalling certain model year 1996-2004 pathfinder and model year 1997-2003 infiniti QX4 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, washington d.c.…
The strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly. this may lead to grinding noises, increased steering effort, and possibly the steering column to break, resulting in the loss of steering control, which could result in a crash.
Nissan will inspect the strut housing and repair the vehicles as necessary, free of charge. an interim notification letter was sent out in may 2011. the second notice was mailed on july 25, 2011. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

This may result in surface rust but not perforation of the tube. however, in those areas of the country which use heavy concentrations of road salt in the winter, if a mixture of snow/water and salt makes contact with the bare metal, corrosion may occur to a degree which results in perforation of the tube. in this case fuel leakage may occur when filling the tank. fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Dealers will replace the fuel filler tube assembly with a new one with an improved coating process. the recall began on november 26, 2007. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
Accelerating grinding sound in back chassis. Steering is harder than usual. Im not getting the power to accelerate properly all the time. Eventually the problem with salt cause im in Indiana too much salt on roads and i dont think things are sealed completely from manufacturers.
Unknown. Steering is rough. Sounds
TL* the contact owns a 1999 infiniti QX4. While driving 55 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 11v244000 (steering, suspension). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the front strut housing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000. *Bf consumer stated infinity contacted and was told there was no open case for his vehicle for my vehicleas the recall had already been serviced in 2008. I brought the car in and they repaired it completely with a bracket and fiberglass repair kit.*jb
Just bought the car used 5 months ago and it's not working due to strut housing and fuel filler tube recalls. I'm disabled and homeless currently and without the ability to drive my vehicle.
Odometer not operating - not functioning at all
While on vacation with the entire family in the vehicle and traveling down the turnpike at 75mph I started down a incline with the cruise control on and when the motor started coasting or not under load the rear end started to shake side to side so bad that I had to get on the brakes and slow down to 35 mph and then it started to do it a this speed also (anytime not under load from gas petal it starts to wobble. Found the problem to be the rear track arm bushings where installed to make them fail by nissan,. The bushing arunder shear load as well as tension load. Not a good set up. Cost to fix $1000.00 ($245.00 in parts and $705.00 in labor to remove and replace. Nissan has a service bulletin but refuses to replace or even help with the cost of this deadly problem. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1999 infiniti QX4. The contact stated that both rear exterior and interior doors failed to open. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
On nov. 4TH, 2013, I was driving my child to school. I began to turn left & the car suddenly jerked us to the left & then went out of control. As we were jerked to the left, I felt the steering wheel jerk and then it started spinning like a top. There was no way to control the steering. We slammed into an embankment and my 7 yr old daughter hit her head. Once we got home, I contacted a mechanic who said that he thought there was a recall so I contacted nissan. They said there was a recall on "some" of the 1999 nissan infinitis, but had no way of knowing if mine was one of them. I contacted the mechanic who said to give nissan my vin and they should be able to give me more info. Called nissan back and they were extremely rude and said they had already discussed this with me the previous day. I told them that a mechanic had told me to call back & give them my vin, so I did. She still would not help. I asked to speak to a manager and she said that I was not a "case" so I would not be allowed to speak to one & she would not give me a name. I stated that we were in accident, & just because we lived through it, did not mean that we did not deserve answers. Once she heard that there was accident, she said that they handle that differently & have to assign a case number to it then. They took my info and the process began. I did not receive a rental from them until the end of nov, several weeks after the accident. I had pictures of my own, & the steering column IS broke in half, which I provided them as well. A clean break all the way through. On dec 4TH I received an offer letter telling me that I had 7 days to accept, or they would take my rental and I would have to claim my car, which had been deemed un-drivable and un-insurable. Basically take this ridiculous offer, which was low, or you get nothing & have to pay for your rental, have no car and an injured daughter. *tr
1. Stereo amplifier fuse blew. (15 amp) 2. Fuse replaced 3. While driving the car smelled smoke. 4. All dash lights and electrical system went black. 5. Smoke started coming from under the dash board. 6. Car remained running, head lights functioned. 7. After turning the car off, large amounts of smoke came from behind and under the dash board. 8. Car would not start and all electrical system non responsive. 9. Inspection of dash wiring harness revealed extreme melting and damage to interior wiring harness in the area of the fuse box and all connections to electrical systems. 10. Vehicle IS completely inoperable and at dealer for inspection and possible repair. 11. complication vehicle was manufactured for nissan north america and IS now registered and driven in the middle east (manama, bahrain) not sure if nissan middle east will be aware of any recalls or problems with north american specifications. I am from the USA and the present owner of the vehicle, submitted because car was brought from the USA to middle east. *Tr
TL* the contact owns a 1999 infiniti QX4. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph she heard a rattling and squeaking noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but the failure was unable to be duplicated. Four months later the brake light illuminated and the vehicle was taken to a personal mechanic for diagnosis. The contact was informed that the strut housing tower dropped and damaged the brake line, causing brake fluid to drain out of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs under nhtsa campaign ID number: 11v244000 (suspension:front) but the dealer refused to repair the vehicle as they had previously repaired the driver's side under the same recall a year earlier. The manufacturer was notified and stated the repair would not be covered because the brake line was not associated with the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 182,491 and the current mileage was 187,257.
The ignition key, at times, would not rotate so as to allow the driver to start the vehicle. vehicle was repaired by an infiniti dealer who could not explain what was wrong with the ignition key or assembly, or why the part failed. as a safety issue I asked infiniti USA to look into the matter and they pretty much gave me the "brush-off" without any explanation. I see this a a major safety issue considering a person(s) could be stranded in any weather conditions if the ignition did not allow them to start the vehicle. if in a remote area a person could easily freeze to death without being able to start the vehicle. I don't believe the part should have failed considering the minimal amount of mileage on the vehicle at the time. this IS not a normal part that a person could have maintained to have in a working condition, it IS subject to failure at any given time based on what I have been told. this IS not your normal item subject to wear and tear, it needs to be investigated further. *tr
1999 infiniti QX4. Consumer states rapid rust of vehicle *tgw the consumer stated one year after the vehicle was purchased, she noticed rusting around the driver side mirror. Shortly after, it began to rust on both fenders. in the next few years, the vehicle began to rust out rapidly. both fenders, the rear hatch, runners, side mirrors, gas tank, gas tank cover, gas tank neck and pipes all had rust out. the consumer stated the vehicle was poorly designed, because the fender welds held leaves, dirt and water from the hood. Also, in the winter when there was snow and ice on the road, the vehicle had to be placed in 4-wheel drive or it would slide out of control. The steering column had to replaced and needs to be replaced again, because it was difficult to turn and the driver side strut was making a noise. *jb
1999 infiniti QX4. Consumer requests reimbursement due to the loss of value of vehicle due to severe rust damage *tgw the consumer stated one day, while her husband was driving, he felt a vibration and heard a knocking noise from the left front of the vehicle. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they diganosed the problem as a sway bar issue, worn ball joints and problems with the strut tower housing rusting out. the consumer stated she received two recall notices regarding the strut tower hosing after the vehicle was traded. *jb
TL* the contact owns a 1999 infiniti QX4. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact lost control of the steering causing him to crash into a pole. The vehicle sustained damage to the front driver side. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to an auto shop where the mechanic advised that the steering shaft had fractured and caused the contact to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 199,000. updated 06/14/2012 *js
TL* the contact owns a 1999 infiniti QX4. The dealer advised the contact there was rust under the drivers front seat of the vehicle and on the frame. The rust had not completely covered the frame at the time it was noticed. The contact stated the failure was a manufacturers defect. The current mileage was 127,000.
I own a 1999 infinity QX4 the gas line erupted & all the gas leaked out the car was towed to a mechanic & upon inspection I was informed by the mechanic that there was a recall on this same defect previously I was not aware of a recall period. I contacted the infiniti dealer & I was informed that I will have to pay for the repairs. Please let me know what IS my next course of action. *kb
TL* the contact owns a 1999 infiniti QX4. While driving approximately 25 mph and applying the brakes, the brakes would not respond. The contact was able to roll the vehicle to a stop and the vehicle was then towed to the dealer. The technicians stated there was excessive corrosion on the front passenger side suspension that affected the brake lines and the frame. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign ID number: 11v244000 (suspension:front) that could have been related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised that the vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000. the consumer supplied a letter from a collision center which stated the repairs would exceed $5000 and would not be a lasting repair. Updated 10/27/11
1999 infiniti QX4. Consumer writes in regards to safety recall notice regarding the front driver's strut tower housing *tgw prior to the recall, the consumer was informed the strut tower was not only contacting the steering column; it was aggressively rasping the entire steering system. the consumer was informed the vehicle was not safe to drive. The consumer has since donated the vehicle.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 infiniti QX4. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph the vehicle would jerk violently. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 112,380.
I was driving at a slow rate of speed when I felt and heard a noise in the steering column and brake pedal. Upon further inspection I saw the driver side strut tower had broken loose from the welds on the frame causing the tower to become dislodged from the frame itself.
1999 infiniti QX4. Consumer writes in regards to recent repairs due to corrosion *tgw the consumer received a recall notice regarding corrosion to the strut tower. The consumer did not believe the corrosion issue was isolated to the drivers side strut tower housing in the front wheel area. the corrosion on the consumers vehicle was extremely bad in the inner fender panel which housed the engine mounts. It was discovered when the struts had to be replaced due to the vehicle bouncing. the mechanic informed the consumer, they were not able to put the vehicle on the rack due to the severity of the corrosion and that the engine was hanging on by a few bolts on one side of the vehicle. the consumer was informed there was additional corrosion under the front end of the vehicle. The mechanic indicated it was not as severe as the previous corrosion , but it would need to be fixed. *Jb
The driver side strut tower has detached from the body approximately 50% due to corrosion and welding/rivet failure. a clanking metallic sound IS made on normal driving conditions. *tr
I brought my 1999 infiniti QX4 to the dealer to determine why the check engine light came on while I was driving. they told me that my strut tower was separated and it needed to go to a body shop. the body shop told me that the problem was that the metal along strut tower welds was rotted, posing a danger of collapse on the steering column. their check of the passenger side found the same problem, although it's less severe. I have photos and video. They wanted over $6,000 to fix it. Insurance wouldn't cover it so I took it back to infiniti. They brought it to a body shop they use and fixed the driver's side for $1800. They said the passenger side wasn't a problem to worry about. The dealer IS aware of this problem with the QX4 and suggested I complain to their corporate office. Corporate wouldn't acknowledge the rotting around welds and said there'd be no compensation because it's out of warranty. I saved the parts. I believe infiniti should pay for the fix of the passenger side and reimburse my $1800. Their mechanics and dealers know this IS a problem but corporate will risk customers lives for profit.
Component 1 - strut tower rusted in several locations, component 2 - running boards rusted out and were repaired. I understand there maybe be a recall for the strut tower. my current condition will need to be repaired for pa inspection. the last recall I had to do w/the gas tank, nhtsa campaign #07v435000, which I already had replaced before the recall. just trying to save having something done twice, but it needs to be repaired for safety. I have pictures that can be sent, should you request. thank you. the dealer informed the consumer her vehicle qualified for the recall. However, infiniti had not made a decision on how to fix the problem. The consumer stated the vehicle will not pass inspection and the steering has a shimmy. updated 06/15/11
Broken strut tower/housing on 1999 QX4. Mechanic just advised it has rusted and torn away on the drivers side. Car IS considered unsafe to drive because it IS impacting the steering column shaft. *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
In their Defect Information Report (DIR) of April 20, 2011, Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified NHTSA that it would conduct a safety recall of certain 1996-2004 Nissan Pathfinder and 1997-2003 Infinity QX4 vehicles to repair corrosion damage to the driver's side front strut tower. The vehicles included in the recall are those that were originally sold, or are currently registered in salt belt states including Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The DIR states in part, ...the strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly. This could lead to the strut housing panel separating and contacting the steering column lower shaft.Contact with the steering column lower shaft can cause steering difficulties and may require an increase in steering effort by the driver. If the steering column lower shaft completely fractured it would result in a total loss of steering control. In some cases, the strut housing panel can contact or affect adjacent brake system components.Complainants reported experiencing either steering or brake system issues, and in some cases, both.Nissan dealer's will inspect the strut housing and, based on the level of corrosion found, make an assessment as to how to remedy the vehicle (see defect information report for additional details). Brake system components adjacent to, and in the area of, the strut tower (i.e., brake master cylinder, left front brake line, ABS wire harness, etc.) will also be inspected.
