2005 Mini Cooper S has power steering whine, hard to steer the wheel. Very unsafe.
Driving at approximately 10-15 miles an hour entering a parking lot when I noticed flames coming out of the hood scoop of my 2005 Mini Cooper S. After brief inspection from my mechanic, it is believed to have been caused by the wiring harness for ABS or possibly the power steering unit since the fire originated from the rear/right hand side of the engine and those two components. I have a claim opened with USAA but during simple research, I have found tens, if not close to a hundred issues with similar characteristics. I know I am not the first R53 Mini Cooper (2002-2006 run) with this problem and this should be considered a hazard and public safety issue. I have included the link to many of the cases captured by the North American Motoring Association (a primarily North American Mini car association) which details 24 pages of these issues. https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/stock-problems-issues/73527-spontaneous-engine-bay-fires.html?ispreloading=1
When driving vehicle transmission slips causing a jerk reaction in the vehicle and then it will renegade causing another jerk reaction in the vehicle and makes going and or stopping unpredictable. Turning left IS dangerous as the car may not move forward at a speed that it should or may jerk in the middle causing the vehicle to stop in front of oncoming traffic. I have had a machanic change the transmission and it still does the same thing. I have contacted the manufacturers who informed me that there were no recalls and nothing they would do.
The power steering assist has all but stopped working, with steering now difficult at lower speed--especially when I first start the engine in the morning. the clutch doesn't respond well and the vehicle no longer goes into second gear. the rear left brake caliper seized in place, not allowing the brake pad to retract completely and therefore the brake pad continuously rubbed against the disc, but without noise. Not until the left rear brake made noise because of the metal on metal braking was the seized oem caliper identified, when I put on a set of new brake pads. None of the other three brakes had the seized oem caliper.
TL* the contact owns a 2005 MINI cooper. While driving approximately 50 mph, the steering became very difficult to maneuver. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. Once restarted, the steering operated normally. The contact also stated that the failure occurred approximately one and a half months and was getting worse. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic. Testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 92,500.
The power steering pump stops functioning intermittently when starting a stop.
TL* the contact owns a 2005 MINI cooper. After turning the vehicle off, the power steering pump continued to operate. Also, while operating the vehicle, the power steering pump sometimes failed and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. Also, the low battery warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to orlando MINI (350 lake destiny drive, orlando, fl) where it was diagnosed that the power steering pump was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 172,000.
Steering wheel got stiff when I'm driving.
Before I bought the car it was rear-ended from losing speed because the transmission was slipping. This IS in the design of this year of MINI cooper as I am finding that it IS on the internet as just a bad design. I can't get anyone to work on it for a reasonable price. I'm hoping there's some help out there for unsuspecting innocent people like me who thought they were getting a good car and now it IS just unsafe as I have had to tow it 3 times now and I've only had it since may of this year 2018.
Power steering pump failed while car was being driven. vehicle only has 90K and for some reason was not covered under the recall per MINI USA. MINI needs to review the recall and correct all 2005 MINI cooper's with this defect.
While driving car my steering wheel became very heavy and hard to steer.
Steering IS difficult and requires exertion when I turn the wheel. I believe my car should be included in the recall recall 15v-xxx: electro-hydraulic power steering (ehps) system M32 02 15 it IS not included in this recall but because my car exhibits the same issue that IS recalled on cars made in that year, I feel that the limits should be expanded to include my car and other cars manufactured when mine was.
TL* the contact owns a 2005 MINI cooper. While driving 45 mph, the power steering failed without warning. The contact stated that it was difficult to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v660000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance in having the vehicle repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
The power steering pump on my 2005 MINI cooper s IS acting up/ faulty, making a groan noise and steering IS hard at times.
The power steering in my MINI cooper 2005 has been intermittent. the steering wheel becomes very hard to turn all of a sudden, particularly at low speeds when it IS needed the most to make turns or to park. there are no fault indicators for this issue on the dashboard either. the very first time this happened in march 2011 when my car had less than 80,000 miles on it. the power steering became completely inoperable. at that time the dealer informed me that the power steering pump failure was a known problem in MINI cooper and that the pump had to be replaced. the replacement cost was too high though, hence I chose to think about it before having it replaced. luckily, the power steering started working again and even though steering became a little hard at times I got used to it. but since end of april 2017 the problem has been getting worse. steering gets too hard at times and requires a lot of force to turn the steering wheel at low speeds. getting in and out a compact parking spot IS exceptionally hard. making left, right and u turns are also very hard. even though there IS a recall on this issue, I have not received a recall notice in the mail. I don't understand why my car was not included in the recall. or if the recall IS ongoing, why should it take so long since this IS a safety issue.
Problem with the transmission. Transmission does not shift properly downshifts at high speeds causing the engine to rev really high. Jolts a lot on the speed changes. Having signs indicative of transmission failure.
TL* the contact owns a 2005 MINI cooper. While driving approximately 55 mph, the power steering failed without warning. the contact stated that the power steering ability had not returned for one month. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that an electro hydraulic steering system would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 15v660000 (steering), but the vin was excluded. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
I reported a few months ago that my power steering had failed. It IS a 2005 MINI cooper, and some 2002-2005 MINI coopers were effected, but supposedly not my MINI with my vin number. The recall had ended in february 2005 and my car was manufactured in april 2005. However I believe that BMW (makers of MINI cooper) were using faulty power steering units after february 2005. My car has low miles, I am the original owner and I take pristine care of my MINI. As a result, I hit a curb and had to have the front left tire changed. The weather was clear, no rain and my tires are all just about brand new run flat tires. The range of MINI coopers affected needs to increased. This IS obviously a problem and BMW (makers of MINI cooper) seem to not take it seriously. My power steering IS a major safety issue and needs to be addressed asap
Electro-hydraulic power steering system recall. MINI company and dealership refuse to tow our car for repair. We recently experienced this issue of steering "freezing up" - severely limited, on the highway, which was scary and did not feel safe. all dealerships require driving on the highway from our home. Dealership stated that it was safe to drive, but I do not agree, having experienced the problem first hand. MINI refuses to tow because it was not part of the recall. Please note: incident date IS an estimate. Will get actual date asap. note: this steering limitation has also happened last winter when trying to steer the car out of a parking spot. I was not able to move the steering wheel (1/16). Called dealership, but did not have new part in stock yet and did not know when it would be available. Car did not do it the next time (few days later). Dealership never contacted us to alert the part was available (as it now IS).
The power steering goes in and out. Sometimes it steers properly and sometimes it IS like turning a truck. Happens both while stationary and when moving.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) originally opened the investigation of loss of power steering assist in model year (MY) 2004 and 2005 Mini Cooper as Preliminary Evaluation PE10-038.The investigation was upgraded to Engineering Analysis EA11-005 in May, 2011.During EA11-005 the scope was expanded to include MY 2002 and 2003 vehicles that use the same steering system. The subject vehicles now include MY 2002, the first year BMW sold MINI in the U.S., through mid-MY 2005 covering approximately 109,000 vehicles. The subject vehicles use an electrically driven pump to provide hydraulic pressure to a conventional rack-and-pinion steering gear.A pump, the electric motor, and an electronic control unit (ECU) are housed in a single component BMW calls a Power Pack. The investigation focused on contaminant-induced failure of the ECU resulting in a loss of assist without warning. When assist is lost mechanical steering is retained however increased steering effort is required to keep the vehicle on an intended path. Some consumers reported that restarting the vehicle (cycling the ignition switch) would often reinstate the steering assist.Additionally, and by design, assist can also reinstate during the drive cycle in limited circumstances. The unexpected loss of assist, and/or possibly the reinstatement of assist while driving, may contribute to a loss of vehicle control in certain driving situations.During MY 2005 production BMW introduced a revised Power Pack design (the ECU incorporated a conformal coating of the circuit board) which resulted in a significant reduction in failures.ODI identified 20 reports describing crashes consistent with a loss of power assist event possibly caused by a failure of the Power Pack. Two reports alleged an injury however both were minor in nature and did not require emergency treatment (a subsequent doctor's visit occurred in one case).Ten of these reports described low speed crashes with minimal, or in most cases no property or vehicle damage (e.g., striking a movable barrier in a parking lot).Additionally 27 other reports alleged or indicated that a crash occurred due to a Power Pack failure however in reviewing these reports, ODI either 1) was unable to confirm that a crash actually occurred (8 reports), or 2) determined that the crash circumstances (e.g., adverse road/weather conditions) or cause (e.g., the crash was caused by steering linkage failure) were not attributable to a Power Pack failure (19 reports).Throughout the investigation BMW maintained that loss of assist in the subject vehicles did not constitute a safety related defect, noting that the subject vehicles are smaller, light weight vehicles that can be reasonably controlled when assist is lost.In May 2013 BMW launched a 13 year/150,000 mile extended warranty coverage utilizing the redesigned Power Pack as a replacement part.ODI continued its investigation. In July 2014 BMW provided ODI a status of the ongoing extended warranty program, and in May 2015 ODI requested an update of complaint data.Following a review of the provided data, ODI informed BMW of its assessment that loss of steering assist failures were not adequately resolved by an extended warranty program. On October 12, 2015 BMW notified NHTSA that it would conduct a safety recall (15V-660) on approximately 86,000 subject vehicles not previously remedied with the new design Power Pack through regular or extended warranty programs. The recall covers MY 2002-2005 MINI Cooper, MY 2002-2005 MINI Cooper S, and MY 2005 MINI Cooper/Cooper S convertibles manufactured through Feb 9, 2005.Vehicles produced after this date are not included si
ODI has received 339 complaints alleging an unexpected loss of power steering assist while driving the vehicle. When the power steering assist stops working, drivers experienced difficulty in steering and/or controlling the vehicle.According to BMW drivers may experience either a temporary or permanent loss of power steering assist.BMW further advised that a temporary loss of power steering assist may be due to a malfunctioning cooling fan or an under-voltage condition in the power steering system.A permanent loss of power steering assist may be due to an error in the internal electronics, and may also result in the continuous running of the power steering pump. The VOQ complaints allege 5 minor crashes and 3 fires. The crashes are described as hit the curb. The fires are described as melted wires. There were no property damage claims.ODI has received similar complaints for other model year Mini.Additional information is required to evaluate the frequency, consequence, and scope of this issue.Accordingly the investigation has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (see EA11-005).
