Certain passenger vehicles and MINI vans have lower pinion bearings in the power rack and pinion assembly in which the retainer tabs were not crimped properly. these and some other retainers used in vehicles assembled between january 1, 1996 and october 31, 1997, could fail and permit the ball bearings to escape.
If this occurs, the pinion shaft can be forced upward during left turns and back down as the steering wheel IS moved back and to the right. if the pinion shaft moves further, the driver will need to exert more effort to turn the steering wheel, similar to a vehicle without power assisted steering. if the pinion shaft moves even further, the driver will require much higher effort to turn left and may not be able to turn the wheel as much as intended. with the maximum pinion shaft movement, which requires internal gear component damage, the driver can encounter high resistance to turning left, followed by unintended power assist to the right. in any of these conditions, a crash could occur.
Dealers will install a new lower pinion bearing unless inspect of the existing bearing indicates that replacement of the gear assembly IS necessary. owner notification began january 24, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, pontiac at 1-800-762-2737, or oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537.

There are a lot of recalls on my poniac grand prix SE. They have affected the safety of myself and my child. The steering fluid leaks from the car after something was replaced on a recall a while back. Recently while I was in traffic my car stopped going and overheated a lot. This car always runs hot. It may have something to do with the most recent recall. But this car will no longer even start up. How do I find out if the recalls are responsible for my car breaking down on me? Also in the letter I received in the mail said to park my car and not drive it. Yet the didn't have the parts in to replace and fix the issue. IS there a way to be compensated for this. I need a reliable car and really wish I hadn't purchased one with so many issues.

Re: gm recall15757. Concern continuing failure to repair my vehicle (according to gm, parts on indefinite recall). Vehicle was recalled and repaired (supposedly), original recall no. 07035 in april 2008. Recalled for same issue in december 2015 and notice by gm of parts available and solution in february 2016. took vehicle (3 weeks ago) to chevrolet/gm dealership. informed yesterday and today by both dealer (henry brown, casa grande, az) and pontiac customer assistance center that repair parts have not been distributed and are on permanent backorder. I have complied, tried to not park vehicle in garage (even though against tenants/cc's of hoa). gm sent letter in february saying parts were available, repair would take approximately 55 minutes and to contact a GMC dealership to have repairs made. today they say no repairs whatsoever across the entire nation have not been made because repair parts not available. This do not seem to be an acceptable solution, especially since they notified owners that a second repair had been re-engineered and parts were available. The last letter was sent by jeffery m. Boyer, vp, global vehicle safety, GMC. can you please help!!!

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
Ea02-030 IS closed with gmea02-030 IS closed with gm?s actions in 03v-473 and 04v-090 recalling approximately 529,000 my 1998-99 c- and h-body vehicles equipped with defective fuel pressure regulators.these vehicles were equipped with plastic intake manifolds that are unable to contain pressures that occur in some backfire events and defective fuel pressure regulators with leaking diaphragms that can provide a source of fuel to produce a combustible air-fuel mixture in the manifold.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by odi that no safety defect exists in the vehicles that are not included in gm?s recalls.odi will continue to monitor the incidence of manifold ruptures and related fires in other my 1995-2002 gm passenger cars equipped with the subject intake manifold.for additional information, see the attached closing report.
By letter dated december 12, 1999, gm notified nhtsa of its plans to conduct a safety related defect campaign to remedy 155,149 of the subject vehicles.the vehicle population for the campaign includes the 1997 buick regal/century and pontiac gran prix models built during the period from the start of production through may 1, 1997.gm determined that the wipers installed prior to this date could stop working, usually during heavy load conditions, due to separation between the drive pin and the crescent in the wiper crank arm assembly.effective may 1, 1997,gm corrected this problem in production by modifying the drive pin and strengthening the crescent.these same improved parts will be installed in the vehicles to be recalled.the scope of the campaign will include all vehicles produced prior to the may 1, 1997 correction (the oldsmobile intrique production did not start until after may 1, 1997, and IS therefore not included).vehicles with the scope of this investigation and produced after may 1, 1997, contain the more robust crescent and improved pin design and are not included in the recall campaign.odi will continue to monitor complaint reports on the vehicles produced after may 1, 1997 and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.based on gm's recall action (odi 99v-348) this investigation IS closed.
Incidents of wiper failure (owner reports and warranty) are very high, and many of the reports indicate that the failures are still occurring in 1999.
