The contact's wife owns a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving at a low rate of speed, an abnormal, grinding noise began to emit from the brake pedal upon depression without warning. The contact had to pump the brake pedal as the pedal depressed to the floorboard before coming to a complete stop. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who informed him that the failure was a known issue with this model vehicle. The mechanic informed him that the vehicle might be under recall. The contact then called a local dealer where he was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 275,000.
I am unable to get the recall taken care of by a dealership due to the age of the vehicle

While driving with my family in the car and without warning, the car stopped moving. In the middle of an intersection it was as if it was in neutral. This was terrifying, then all of a sudden it felt like I was hit from behind and the car popped into gear and shot forward. I now have no reverse and unsure which gears might work, as I immediately got it home. I am a disabled veteran on a limited income and no am facing possibly huge expenses for transmission repairs that I now have read have been complaints on my car for years! I can't understand how gm/chevrolet doesn't see transmission issues as a safety problem. This transmission has had way too many complaints. Having no warning and the inability to be able to move the car in an intersection could have been catastrophic!! Alos when calling a local dealership they should be better informed about any tsb's as to inform consumers. I just thank god my family IS safe, however am now out of a car. Thanks general motors/chevrolet, looks like youre losing another loyal customer.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 00v122000 (seat belts); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer on various occasions since 2003 for other repairs after the technician was asked to repair any outstanding recalls. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. The manufacturer stated that they would order the parts and they would arrive in approximately two weeks. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. While driving various speeds, the brakes would seize and release without warning when the brake pedal was depressed. In addition, the vehicle shook violently. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the ABS failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

The frame has gotten very rusty and the rear axle u bolts have rusted so much that they been replaced.
Brakes lock up & release suddenly at speeds under 45mph while coasting or accelerating. Brakes, rotors, & drums all replaced. Problem continues to exist. When brakes lock, it usually chirps the tires and releases. This happens several times in a row. At times it will cause vehicle to skid to a stop. Brakes lock up without ever touching the brake peddle. As the brakes lock up & release it hits so hard that it throws passengers forward. This happens at random. At times it happens when first operating the vehicle & other times after operating the vehicle for a several miles. At times vehicle IS operated for over 50 miles with no incident. Other times there are 10-20 incidences for every mile traveled. The vehicle has been taken to more than one mechanic on a multitude of occasions with no success. The brakes have never locked up while applying the brakes. No accidents so far but have had a close call. Traveling at approximately 20 mph on about 1/2" of snow, the brakes locked up and caused me to slide within inches of a guardrail.
Excessive frame rust, which to date the vehicle only has 73,000 miles. the rust IS so bad I will probably stop driving, until I can find a good frame. Large layers are coming off, and can be just crumbled. The rest of the truck IS mint, the under body still looks new, the frame IS ouch!, not just local areas, the whole frame structure.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the security warning indicators illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that it might have been the pass key that failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, the technician informed the contact that the vehicle was operating as designed. In addition, the technician stated that the pass code sensor needed to be replaced every two years. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 187,000.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
In a letter dated august 29, 2005, gm notified odi that it was recalling certain model year 1999 through 2002 c/k pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles to correct a problem with anti-lock brake system (ABS) wheel speed sensor corrosion that may result in unwanted ABS activation and extended stopping distances during low-speed braking (recall 05v-379).gm's recall covers approximately 804,000 vehicles currently registered in the following 14 salt-belt states:connecticut, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, and west virginia.the recall procedure will involve removing the sensor, cleaning the mounting surface, applying a rust inhibitor (zinc-x) to the surface, and reinstalling the sensor.if necessary, the sensor will be replaced. The population and failure report data given in this resume are for the full region that has been considered by odi as the salt-belt.that includes delaware, iowa, maryland, minnesota, missouri, wisconsin and the district of columbia in addition to the 14 states included in 05v-379.the states covered by gm's recall have the highest incident rates for the subject condition, accounting for 91% of the incidents, but only 24% of subject vehicle sales in the united states.odi's analysis determined that 840 of the complaints, 244 of the crashes, and 16 of the injuries identified in this investigation occurred in those states.the resulting incident and crash rates are 96.2 and 28.0 per 100,000 vehicles respectively (note:rates are based on vehicle sales, not registered vehicles). The corresponding numbers in the excluded portions of the salt-belt are 399,000 vehicles, 81 incidents (20.3 per 100,000 vehicles), 3 crashes, and no injuries.the statistics in the remaining 30 states are 2,406,000 vehicles, 168 incidents (7.0 per 100,000 vehicles), 31 crashes, and one injury.gm and odi are continuing to monitor the problem experience in states that are not included in the recall.gm will provide odi with updated complaint, field report, and warranty data in november 2005.odi and gm will review that data and assess the appropriateness of the current scope of the recall at that time.
There have been less than 2 complaints per 100,000 subject vehicles related to the alleged defect.the oldest vehicles (my 1999) have only 2 complaints in over 140 thousand vehicles after over 4 years in service.the rate of warranty claims potentially related to the alleged defect IS less than 0.1%.there are no known incidents involving rapid loss of tire pressure or loss of vehicle control. A defect trend has not been identified at this time.accordingly, this investigation IS closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
This investigation involves the general motors corporation (gm)throttle body (tb) utilized in model year (my) 1999-2002 silverado, sierra, tahoe, suburban, avalanche and yukon (subject vehicle(s)) with 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L engines. The tb valve may intermittently stick in a closed position.in such a situation, an operator may apply additional accelerator pedal force to increase engine speed.the application of additional accelerator pedal force, to open a stuck throttle valve, may open the throttle valve more than intended and, in turn, accelerate the engine and vehicle more than intended and reasonably expected by the driver.on august 1, 2002, the office of defects investigation (odi), of the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa), opened this engineering analysis.the investigation revealed that two factors may cause the defect: 1) tb manufacturing process problems; and 2) accumulation of deposits (a pcv system by-product) on or around the tb throttle valve and bore.odi concludes that the tb performs in a defective manner after analyzing gm?s data submissions, and test data collected by the vehicle research and test center (vrtc).fifty-nine crashes are alleged to have occurred as a result of gm?s tb defect.the majority of the crashes involve a single vehicle, engaging in a close quarter vehicle maneuver (or low speed), and causing only minor property damage.four out of the fifty-nine crashes involve injury, and those injuries were minor.although gm?s tb IS defective, based on the evidence gathered, odi has found that the accelerator pedal force required to open a stuck throttle valve IS negligible, and the throttle valve does not stick in the open position.therefore this engineering analysis (ea02-015) will be closed at this time.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.for a detailed discussion of the tb component and testing, please see the attached report.
Odi has received one (1) complaint alleging that the 2ND row passenger-side seat belt release buckle anchor detached from seat frame during a side impact crash.during the crash, the occupant was thrown from his seat, partially ejected through the rear quarter window of the vehicle.occupant sustained injury.gm has subsequently changed seat belt anchoring design in my 2000. Odi has completed a preliminary investigation and has determined that further information IS needed to determine whether a safety defect exists.
The office of defect investigation (odi) has investigated allegations of power steering assist fluctuations in the subject vehicles.for details and a basis for the investigation conclusions, please see the closing report in the ea99-011 public file.odi has not identified a safety-related defect trend in the subject vehicle population.futher expenditure of agency resources on this subject does not appear to be warranted at this time.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.the engineering IS closed.
