The ABS caught on fire. Lost brakes and all brake fluid, no police reports because it was in my alley way as soon as I started moving, when it happened the ABS and brake lights both came on at the same time. No prior warning.
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at slow speeds, the ABS would erroneously activate. During the failure, the stopping distance was increased and the ABS warning light was activated. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V379000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000.
ABS/Traction Control wheel speed sensors corroded, causing the ABS to activate at low speeds and making it impossible to stop the car. This is the same issue as has been reported for other VIN numbers of the same vehicle; see Safety Recall 05068 Front Wheel Speed Sensor Corrosion, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2005/RCRIT-05V379-8709.pdf. However, that recall was limited to vehicles registered in the "Rust Belt" states; it appears that as this vintage of vehicle has aged, vehicles outside the Rust Belt now are experiencing the same problem, suggesting that the recall should be broadened.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that when his daughter drove down hill and the brake pedal was engaged, the brake system failed to engage causing the driver to hit a person that was driving a bicycle. The vehicle went up a hill and the driver proceeded attempting to stop the vehicle but it went up a hill, rolled backwards into bushes, and crashed into a tree where it came to a stop. The police was present and a report was filed; the police report number was not available. The person on the bicycle was taken to the hospital and suffered unknown fractures to the body. the driver did not sustain any injuries. The vehicle was towed to the contacts father residence and he noticed that the brake lines were corroded and brake fluid was on the ground. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was called however there was a long wait time and a representative was not available to answer the call promptly. the approximate failure mileage was 166,000. The vin was not available.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. While the contact's son was driving 40 mph, he crashed into a vehicle that ran a red light. The air bags did not deploy. The contact's son sustained chest, lower back, and neck pains that required medical attention. The contact's son went to the emergency room two separate times. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The contact was waiting for finalized information from the insurance company to determine if the vehicle was totaled. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The cause of the failure was not determined. The failure mileage was unknown.
The dash board on my tahoe 2000 with 1999 body style IS no longer available. The problem IS it IS in shards and continues to fall apart. It IS effecting my dashboard, the front panel with gages, my air conditioner, heater, radio. I have called the company and have been given a list of companies to call but no has the dash. I nolonger allow my grandchildren. Elderly parents or anyone to ride with me. In the event of an accident the shards would probably disfigure or kill someone. I need a dashboard. The area over the steering wheel IS in worst condition and the passenger side IS cracked. Please help me remain safe on the road.

Opened tailgate glass while vehicle was parked in my driveway and it shifted to left and then the whole top came loose. and this could injury someone. the metal hinges the attach the glass to the vehicle are attached with a plastic or glue of some type that degenerates. if this occurs while diving the glass could detach and pose a safety issue. my understanding IS that in 2005 gm redesigned the glass with bolts attaching it. many owners on gm forum have had this problem and it IS difficult or impossible to safely fix it. I contacted gm support and they stated that I would have to take to a gm dealer and have fixed at my cost. I feel it should be a safety recall due to poor design.
While driving my vehicle , I applied the brakes to stop at a traffic light , and the brake pedal traveled all the way to the floor . The tahoe finally stopped after a much longer than normal distance . After inspecting the master cylinder , there was hardly any brake fluid remaining . I found that the brake lines were very rusted , and that the line going to the rear brakes was rusted through . This rusting of the brake lines should never occur !
In 2011 my abs/brake light starting coming on took to dealership was told how much it would cost to repair. in searching online how to fix, I see a recall was given to salt belt states in 2005. I own truck since 2002. Told by GMC today the recall although it states salt belt states recall only affected certain vin #'s IS this correct? First owner lived in salt belt state and truck manufactured in salt belt. I see there are additional GMC products with same problem. Why don't they repair?
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that while attempting to come to a complete stop, the ABS system disengaged causing the vehicle to lunge forward. The contact stated that the ABS system would re-engage if the brake pedal was released and then depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but the failure was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also stated that while driving at various speeds, there would be an abnormal noise coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle would veer to the left. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the hub bearing assembly on the drivers side of the vehicle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however the failure recurred on three separate occasions. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds for a period of time and then turning off the vehicle, a burning oil odor would come from the vehicle. The contact stated that while having the vehicle serviced by an independent mechanic, it was informed that there was engine oil leaking from the main seal and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired, however the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that the ABS warning light illuminated when attempting to park or making a turn. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and 00v345000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
Went to stop at stop sign at approximately 4MPH and no brakes. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor without any resistance or hesitation. As a result of the brake malfunction I rear ended an elderly couple in a lexus. Resulting in damage to their rear bumper plastic cover and more damage was done to my front end of the defective 200 chevrolet tahoe Z71 I was driving
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. While approaching a stop sign, the brakes failed. The contact had to apply excessive force in order to stop the vehicle. As a result, the contact crashed the vehicle into a pole. There were no injuries and a police report was filed. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 256,345.
Hello I am experiencing the exact symptoms described in gm recall 05068c "these vehicles may have a condition permitting corrosion to occur between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor. If the brakes are applied while the vehicle IS traveling at a speed of greater than 6 km/h (3.7 mph) but less than 16 km/h (10 mph), the corrosion may cause an unwanted antilock brake system (ABS) activation. If this condition occurred where stopping distance IS limited, a crash could occur. " however, my vin IS not included in the breakpoints, even though I have a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. I can demonstrate that this IS the problem in two ways, first by reproducing with a scan tool that shows unexpected ABS activation during stopping at this low speed, and second after pulling the ABS fuse this problem does not happen. this clearly points to the ABS issue mentioned in the recall. I have contacted two local dealerships, and after I asked about recalls they said my vin was invalid. then I contacted the chevy contact center and they said there are no recalls for my vehicle. so now what - should I just replace the ABS sensors and move on, or IS there any chance of getting this acknowledged by gm as part of the recall?
This happened twice in the last week. while accelerating the gas pedal has gotten stuck and the vehicle increases with speed. In a panic I shifted the transmission into neutral; the engine kept revving. As I continued to attempt to un-stick the gas pedal I noticed it was all the way down to the floor. after about 20 seconds it finally un-stuck when I stomped on it several times. this happened first on a public street and last while entering the highway. *tr
Tried to stop and brakes failed due to rusted thru rear left steel brake line. Now have 2 others rusted thru. Car IS at mechanic shop now mechanic IS replacing all brake lines because he would not touch it other wise .hesaid I can expect at least a $1200.00 dollar bill or more. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds, the ABS activated independently. The dealer stated that the vehicle had unwanted ABS activation. The dealer cleaned the grounds, calipers, and rotors, lubed the wheel speed sensor mounts, and checked and cleaned the hubs. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 148,250. updated 03/17/15*lj
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that the vehicle consumed an abnormal amount of engine oil without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 80,000.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the front and the rear brake lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000. The vin was unavailable.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. While driving 10 mph, the vehicle failed to respond when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact crashed into a parked vehicle. A police report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 183,000.
Driving to gas station prior to going on vacation, applied brakes and peddle went to the floor with no warning lights on to indicate failure of the brake system. I found brake tubing failure on rear drivers side. The tubing IS so rusted that it can not be repaired and must be replaced at a dealer the cost IS around $3000.00 for all new brake tubing, probably why gm has not fixed the problem it's a big money maker. *tr
Tried to stop and brakes failed due to rusted thru rear left steel brake line. Now have 2 others rusted thru. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet tahoe. While driving approximately 45 mph, the rear brakes malfunctioned when the brake pedal was depressed. The failure caused the stopping distance to increase. The contact discovered a puncture in the brake line due to the brake line making contact with the frame of the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 148,000.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On January 11, 2011, ODI opened EA11-001 to investigate allegations of premature brake line corrosion failure in model year (MY) 1999 through 2003 General Motors (GM) full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles sold or registered in the following region of the United States that NHTSA has viewed as salt states for investigations of corrosion related issues:Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The subject vehicles represent the first five MY's of GM's GMT800 platform production, of which approximately 2,038,504 vehicles were sold in salt states (the subject vehicles). The GMT800 platform includes the following vehicles:1999-2007 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 series pick-up trucks; 2000-2006 Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon sport utility vehicles; and 2002-2006 Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Avalanche sport-utility vehicles.General Motors produced a total of approximately 10,427,062 GMT800 vehicles for sales in the United States, including almost 5 million that were sold in salt states.Although there are over 60 different brake pipe routing configuration used in GMT800 vehicles, with the exception of the rear crossover pipes in MY 200x-2007 vehicles that changed from rear disc to drum brakes, all of the vehicles use brake pipes from the same supplier with a common double-wall, brazed steel pipe design with a combination of hot dip Zinc-Aluminum corrosion protection coating and Aluminum paint outer layer known in the industry as AlGal (ASTM-B750). ODI analysis of field data regarding GMT800 vehicles identified a total of 3,645 complaints of brake pipe corrosion failures, including 107 alleging crashes, and 40 injuries.Though only 20% of total GMT800 production, due to age and region the subject vehicles account for a disproportionate share of the failure experience; with 2,702 of the complaints (75%), 88 of the crashes (82%) and 20 of the injuries (50%) reported in those vehicles.Analysis of the complaints showed strong correlations to vehicle age and region. For vehicles with less than 8 years of service, the complaint rates were minimal for all regions. In the salt states the failure rates begin to climb as the vehicles advance in age, particularly in the Northeast corner of the United States. The complaint rates in the salt states go from less than 0.1 incident per thousand vehicles (IPTV) at 7 years in service to over 1.0 IPTV after the 12th year of service for the subject pickup trucks and utility vehicles. Most of the failures reported to ODI occurred in vehicles with more than 10 years in service.ODI?s investigation did not identify any specific defect conditions that were causing or contributing to the brake pipe failures.Nor did the analysis isolate the problem to any subject vehicle sub-populations when analyzed by vehicle type or production range. The investigation found that vehicles experiencing brake pipe corrosion failures were likely to have general patterns of excessive corrosion on the majority of the brake pipe assembly and appear to be occurring due to expected wear out for the brake pipe coating material used in the subject vehicles and the environmental conditions in severe corrosion states.A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor t
Odi's review of complaint data received since the close of ea04-011 revealed no indication that the investigation should be re-opened.more details can be found in the federal register notice enclosed in the dp05-009 public file.odi reserves the right to reopen the investigation in the future should conditions warrant.
In a letter dated august 29, 2005, gm notified odi that it was recalling certain model year 1999 through 2002 c/k pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles to correct a problem with anti-lock brake system (ABS) wheel speed sensor corrosion that may result in unwanted ABS activation and extended stopping distances during low-speed braking (recall 05v-379).gm's recall covers approximately 804,000 vehicles currently registered in the following 14 salt-belt states:connecticut, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, and west virginia.the recall procedure will involve removing the sensor, cleaning the mounting surface, applying a rust inhibitor (zinc-x) to the surface, and reinstalling the sensor.if necessary, the sensor will be replaced. The population and failure report data given in this resume are for the full region that has been considered by odi as the salt-belt.that includes delaware, iowa, maryland, minnesota, missouri, wisconsin and the district of columbia in addition to the 14 states included in 05v-379.the states covered by gm's recall have the highest incident rates for the subject condition, accounting for 91% of the incidents, but only 24% of subject vehicle sales in the united states.odi's analysis determined that 840 of the complaints, 244 of the crashes, and 16 of the injuries identified in this investigation occurred in those states.the resulting incident and crash rates are 96.2 and 28.0 per 100,000 vehicles respectively (note:rates are based on vehicle sales, not registered vehicles). The corresponding numbers in the excluded portions of the salt-belt are 399,000 vehicles, 81 incidents (20.3 per 100,000 vehicles), 3 crashes, and no injuries.the statistics in the remaining 30 states are 2,406,000 vehicles, 168 incidents (7.0 per 100,000 vehicles), 31 crashes, and one injury.gm and odi are continuing to monitor the problem experience in states that are not included in the recall.gm will provide odi with updated complaint, field report, and warranty data in november 2005.odi and gm will review that data and assess the appropriateness of the current scope of the recall at that time.
There have been less than 2 complaints per 100,000 subject vehicles related to the alleged defect.the oldest vehicles (my 1999) have only 2 complaints in over 140 thousand vehicles after over 4 years in service.the rate of warranty claims potentially related to the alleged defect IS less than 0.1%.there are no known incidents involving rapid loss of tire pressure or loss of vehicle control. A defect trend has not been identified at this time.accordingly, this investigation IS closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
The automatic locking retractor (alr) IS a feature incorporated in the subject vehicle for locking the webbing to properly secure a child safety seat into a vehicle.this pe was opened based on a gm technical service bulletin stating that with certain child safety seats the webbing may not remain locked.there are no complaints in the odi database and only two complaints to gm.gm's instructions state for the final step in using the webbing lock feature to push and pull the child restraint to be sure it IS secure. If the alr IS not locked, the user would be fully aware of this condition prior to completing proper installation of the child safety seat in this vehicle.this investigation did not uncover any complaints of the alr inadvertently unlocking while the vehicle IS in motion.the emergency locking retractor (elr) feature remains available to lock the retractor in a crash.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation IS closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached summary for additional information.
This investigation involves the general motors corporation (gm)throttle body (tb) utilized in model year (my) 1999-2002 silverado, sierra, tahoe, suburban, avalanche and yukon (subject vehicle(s)) with 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L engines. The tb valve may intermittently stick in a closed position.in such a situation, an operator may apply additional accelerator pedal force to increase engine speed.the application of additional accelerator pedal force, to open a stuck throttle valve, may open the throttle valve more than intended and, in turn, accelerate the engine and vehicle more than intended and reasonably expected by the driver.on august 1, 2002, the office of defects investigation (odi), of the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa), opened this engineering analysis.the investigation revealed that two factors may cause the defect: 1) tb manufacturing process problems; and 2) accumulation of deposits (a pcv system by-product) on or around the tb throttle valve and bore.odi concludes that the tb performs in a defective manner after analyzing gm?s data submissions, and test data collected by the vehicle research and test center (vrtc).fifty-nine crashes are alleged to have occurred as a result of gm?s tb defect.the majority of the crashes involve a single vehicle, engaging in a close quarter vehicle maneuver (or low speed), and causing only minor property damage.four out of the fifty-nine crashes involve injury, and those injuries were minor.although gm?s tb IS defective, based on the evidence gathered, odi has found that the accelerator pedal force required to open a stuck throttle valve IS negligible, and the throttle valve does not stick in the open position.therefore this engineering analysis (ea02-015) will be closed at this time.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.for a detailed discussion of the tb component and testing, please see the attached report.
