The contact owns a 2000 Ford F-550. The contact stated while driving 30 mph, the power steering and brake lines were leaking causing the brakes and steering to become inoperable. The contact pulled over and topped off the power steering fluid reservoir and drove to the residence. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed but was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 53,000.
Spark plug spit out, a known ford problem.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 ford F-550 sd. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer numerous times, but the failure was unable to be determined. The dealer replaced the engine electronic control unit, the fuel tank was aligned, the filters and the fuel injectors were replaced, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 294,731.
The purpose of this IS to shed light on a defective parking brake system designed by ford. The system will affect several model years of ford light and medium duty trucks. The parking brake pedal assembly does not withstand regular use it tends to fall apart. The last assembly installed in my F-500 IS a ford new assembly and held up for 18000 miles, ford now refuses to provide a replacement under warranty. The failure of the system has cause this truck to roll and hit parked cars. *js the entire design IS a failure as it can not safely hold the weight of an empty vehicle. My truck weighs 14000 empty and IS rated at 19000 gvw. The assembly even when adjusted properly can not hold the vehicle on an incline. The inside the rotor hat design for parking brakes IS a copy from the light suv's ford produces. This IS not an adequate design for heavier vehicles. The surface area contact of shoes to the inside of the rotor hat IS not great enough to produce the friction needed to hold the vehicle. I know of several other people that have the same problem with their fords in the same model years. At 360749 miles the entire parking brake system has been rebuilt on this specific truck. The shoes are adjusted up manually (it has no self adjust feature) tight with the rotor hat and the system will not hold the vehicle on an incline. The system with normal wear becomes a greater hazard as the park brake system weakens quickly. *js
Ford truck began loosing power. became unable to climb hill and continue up road. driver was in very remote alaska in subzero temperatures in work truck (as most f550s are) miles from help. Plowing a firewood road for the state of alaska. we maintain our trucks to the best of our ability to prevent such a life threatening circumstance. driver called me for help. I was able to go online and find enough information (knowing it was not a filter or pump or maintenance issue I dug deeper) to deduce the fuel tank had delaminated as lately has become "common" with these trucks. under my advice driver (being a mechanic) was able to blow compressed air from a compressor he had on board back into the tank and temporarily get the truck running correctly and get back civilization. truck clogged again and has been run starving for fuel for hours before it got to the hill. we are completely upset at the price ford wants to remedy an extremely dangerous design flaw. these trucks are used all over this nation as emergency service vehicles. I know because I have 3 for that purpose. I believe my 2008 wildland fire engine may have the same issue (2008 F550) as the 2000 F550 plow truck I wrote about above. These trucks are relied on with lives to not be burned over during fire burnouts and operations. others of this type of vehicle are ambulances, wreckers, etc. I talked to a ford tech and all dealers that work on these heavy duty trucks know about this problem. why didn't i. my drivers are in danger and google told me enough to get ford tech's to tell me, and it's my financial loss???? please look into the delaminating tank issue for F550 trucks. $3,000 and risk of stranded in front of the flames in summer and remote alaska freezing temps in winter. safety issue like that should be stamped into the dash if its known on these emergency service trucks. Ford F-550 was sitting in driveway with the engine off and caught on fire, the cab of the truck was completely engulfed in flames seconds later vehicles cruise control switch had been replaced under fords recall of the part according to concerns of vehicle fires but was obviously still faulty. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2000 ford F550. the contact stated that the gas tank was faulty since he had it replaced in 2007 and needs to be replaced again due to corrosion. the dealer did not offer any assistance due to the age of the vehicle. the manufacturer was aware of the failure. no repairs were performed. the current mileage was 90,000. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
The ford F-550 with the 7.3L powerstroke engine and automatic transmission has a flaw in its design. the flexplate (flywheel) on ours cracked all the way around the bolts holes in august of 2009. the exact same thing happened in september of this year (2010). we could figure out what it was at first. it simply got louder and louder. had we gone much longer without figuring it out, the vehicle could have lost the ability to propel itself while driving down the road. the flywheel has to be replaced, which costs $599.00 with parts and labor. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 ford F550. the contact stated that the material in the fuel tank has detached from the inner structure of the tank. the material was in the fuel injector and caused the vehicle to stall and shuts off intermittently while driving 65 mph. the contact has taken the vehicle to the dealer to replace the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel sender, fuel filters, and the fuel injectors. the repairs have remedied the failure. the contact stated that the vehicle could have caused a crash while stalling. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 98,450.

Was driving along in my ford F550 psd when the engine quit. Lost power steering and brakes. Pulled over the side of the road for five min. And restarted truck. Next day it did the same thing this time as we were pulling into a parking lot. Restarted and drove back to camp ground and changed the cps (cam position sensor) the problem never happened again. Glad I was not towing the fifth-wheel at the time. *jb
TL* - the contact stated that the driver of a 2000 F550 super duty truck was traveling less than 5 mph when the driver made a hard left u-turn and then a hard right and the steering shaft snapped, causing a loss of control. the failure mileage was 26,188. the vehicle was towed back to an independent facility. the independent facility diagnosed the failure as the steering box shaft breaking. The dealer has been contacted and the general manager was aware of this failure. *ak

Recall campaign for ford F550 trucks concerning the vale stems used on 19.5 inch tires. *bf one of the vehicle's tires had to be replaced because the valve stem failed causing severe damage to the tires sidewall. on another occasion one of the dually wheel tire valve stems failed and caused the tire to go flat. the consumer replaced all four dually tire valve stems with the tread nut on top. the consumer request reimbursement. *nm
200 ford F-550, miss in engine unresolved thru dealers and other shops, been this way since new, consulted with last 2 owners, same issue, I replaced all 8 injectors, injector harness, rocker arms, still engine misses at 24-2600 rpms, white/blue smoke, hard cold starts, rough idling, problem has still not been able to be resolved I purchased truck to add to fleet in december 2004 and no one including ford can fix this truck after several thousand dollars in repairs ive read reports ford had issues not yet resolved on these trucks. IS this the case,? Has it been resolved , and if so what cure fixed these trucks? *Jb

I own a 2000 ford F550 modified by fontaine modification company, louisville, ky to tow a fifth wheel trailer, gvr 15,900 lbs. this was a demo vehicle for fontaine and had 2598 miles on the odometer. it was delivered to me as a new vehicle with a 3 year 36,000 miles warranty on 9-29-2002. prior to purchasing this vehicle, the dealer, cunningham campers had two blow outs on the right rear dual 225/70r-19.5/f general tires on 8-6-2002. two more blow outs, (explosions) occurred in of june 2003, while the vehicle was parked. I replaced the general tires with michelin tires. this vehicle was delivered without high pressure valve stems which I replaced with the high pressure valve stems after the second blowout. the local ford dealer refused to take any action on my complaint and blamed continental tire company (general) and continental blamed ford for the problem saying that the zipper tears were caused by inferior valve stems. I have another tire that IS very questionable and I am afraid to go on the highway towing a 5TH wheel that weighs 15,900 with tires experienced 4 blow outs in the past year and a questionable 5TH tire and 4 more original tires left on the vehicle which neither ford nor continental will take responsibility for. I will be taking several long trips in the next year totaling over 5,000 miles--help .*ak
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
In a december 3, 2007 letter, ford advised nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall to replace the cam position sensor (cps) in approximately 1.2 million subject vehicles to address reports of engine stalling.a new design cps with improved performance and durability will be installed as a remedy.owner notifications will begin in december 2007. The subject vehicles are durable, full-sized, medium duty trucks commonly used for commercial purposes, rescue/emergency response, and commercial or recreational towing.cps failure IS comparable to unexpectedly turning the key off since the signal it produces IS vital to the electronic engine control system.cps signal loss terminates fuel injection resulting in an engine stall.once stalled, the engine may restart right away, or may restart after a delay (typically 5 to 10 minutes), or may not restart at all.in addition to exposing the driver and other motorists to crash risk due to loss of motive power or vehicle disablement, engine stalling also effects the power assisted steering and braking. Through consumer interviews, odi determined that cps failures occurred without any form of warning, at any vehicle speed (50% at highway speeds), and under any driving condition, such as accelerating.consumers reported that about a third of the vehicles failed to restart, with another third reporting delayed restarting.half the vehicles that did restart experienced another stall on the same or a subsequent drive cycle (before cps replacement) re-exposing those consumers to the risks associated with a stalling event.in their voq reports, half of the odi complainants described difficulty controlling the vehicle due to lose of power assist systems, especially those who were towing at the time of the incident. The one alleged injury incident occurred in an intersection when a subject vehicle stalled while turning across oncoming lanes of traffic.although unsubstantiated, the complainant alleged an injury to a child occupant during odi's interview.the other crash allegations mostly involved low speed, loss of control incidents often caused by lack of power assist; no injuries are reported in these incidents, and property damage, if any, was minimal.consumers also reported other incidents with significant safety risks, such as disablement in a lane or on a shoulder of a high-speed roadway or interstate, or extended disablement in remote areas during severe weather conditions. The population above IS ford's estimate of the 1.4 million subject vehicles produced that are currently registered.the ford complaint and warranty counts noted above are current as of ford's last submission dated june 21, 2007; they do not include F-450, F-550, or econoline counts as these products were not formally within scope of the investigation when failure information was requested.warranty data analysis indicates that about half the claims involved a stall while driving event ( ford's assessment) and that poor cps durability was a longstanding concern.ford reported that the new cps design should meet or exceed their 10 year, 150K mile life expectancy design requirement.
Ea05-005 IS closed with ford?s actions in recalls 05v-017, 05v-388, and 06v-286, recalling approximately 6.7 million vehicles equipped with texas instruments speed control deactivation switches (scds).the brake systems in these recalled vehicles generate a vacuum that can potentially cause the scds to fail and, in certain switch installation orientations, catch fire.ford IS also including the entire population of 1998 explorers.ford has informed odi that testing to determine the cause of failures in the 1998 explorers will continue after this investigation IS closed.odi believes that the vehicles exhibiting the factors causing scds failure described in this report correlate well with the observed failure rates on these vehicles by model and model year.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist in the non-recalled vehicles manufactured with scds that are not included in ford?s recalls.odi will continue to monitor the non-recalled population for incidence of engine compartment fires.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached closing report for details.
This investigation was opened on certain ford pickup trucks and vans to evaluate the effects of a valve stem ejection (with rapid air loss) and a slow leaking valve stem on vehicle handing.during the investigation, odi evaluated over 1,100 complaints and warranty claims, conducted vehicle dynamic testing on a subject vehicle with the failure mode replicated, interviewed owners, and examined complaint vehicles in the field.the results of the test program indicates the effect of a valve stem ejection on these vehicles IS easily controlled. Further, with a population of almost 900,000 vehicles, having two to four years of exposure, odi IS aware of only 3 minor crashes and IS unaware of any injuries.the small number of crashes relative to the large population of vehicles IS consistent with the testing which was performed. Therefore, this investigation IS closed.see the attached report for full technical details.
This ea was opened based on a response received from ford motor company to an information request (ir) submitted during sq00-018.ford stated in an internal service message that it had changed the steering gear sector shafts and pitman arms installed 1999 model year f-series super duty vehicles on march 22, 1999.ford stated that these design changes were implemented to make improvements in vehicle steering and handling, and that virtually all of the reported fractured sector shafts were the result of extraordinary, possibly multiple, impacts.an engineering analysis closing report IS attached.
