Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.

If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds on several occasions, the vehicle lost power steering assist. While driving 55 MPH, the failure recurred, nearly causing a semi-truck to crash into the vehicle and causing the vehicle to veer off the ramp. The contact's dog jumped out of the vehicle into the bushes and sustained a minor injury. The Brake Assist, ABS, Stabili-trak, and power steering assist warning lights illuminated, and the message "Electronic Steering Failure" was displayed after the failure. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle operated as intended. Additionally, the contact stated that the ABS seemed to fail to operate as intended. A dealer was contacted by phone and stated that the power steering control module might need to be replaced. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V414000 (Steering). The failure mileage was approximately 134,000.

At low speeds, and not 100% of the time, the power steering will go out while I'm turning. It just does it on its own and will correct itself in a few seconds, usually when I'm done with the turn. It's at very low speeds, like parking in a parking lot or turning around in front of my house. So far no issues turning at normal speeds in traffic. Very scary at the low speeds especially since my wife and my young daughter might drive it in a year when she gets her license. I can kind of still turn it, but I know they can't and a new driver will more than likely panic.

I am experiencing ongoing issues with the 6L80E transmission that have significantly affected the performance and reliability of my vehicle. The transmission shifts harshly between gears, hesitates when accelerating, and occasionally slips before engaging. There is also a noticeable shudder during acceleration and inconsistent shifting, especially at lower speeds. These problems have become more frequent over time and raise concerns about the safety and dependability of the vehicle. The transmission does not operate as expected for normal driving conditions, and the issues negatively impact the overall driving experience. I am requesting a thorough inspection of the transmission, an explanation of the cause of these issues, and an appropriate repair or resolution to restore the vehicle to proper working condition.

IT HAS A VACUUM PUMP issue, causing the brakes to malfunction at slower rates of speed. A "computer programming recall" was applied to my VIN however it is the ACTUAL Vacuum pump that is the problem. This should have been covered in all year, make and models. BRAKES ARE IMPORTANT! Reprogramming did not solve the vacuum pump issue that is causing the brakes to fail! This is absolute negligence on behalf of General Motors.

In addition, the vehicle felt as if it were in neutral. The tachometer gauge revved up independently. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact pulled to the side of the road. The contact opened the front hood and noticed that one of the transmission lines had failed. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact replaced the hose and filled up the transmission reservoir. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a specialty transmission place and rebuilt the transmission. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that a few months later the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the specialty shop, and the transmission was replaced. The contact stated that a few months later, while driving at an undisclosed speed, an abnormal odor was emitting from the front end of the vehicle. The contact was able to pull to a rest area, and when the front hood was open, the contact noticed that one of the transmission lines had a leak and transmission oil was being sprayed all over. The contact was able to replace the transmission hose. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

6.2L Engine has well documneted problem with the valvetrane, I have had to fix it 2 times in 3 months. I have pictures and documents from servicing dealerships. Since my ownership, it has always been dealer-serviced. Unexpected catastrophic engine failure, which happened on a major interstate. GM service technicians know there is a valvetrane issue. This instance, the warning light came on under and overpass, and the truck coasted to a stop just past the end of the on-ramp. A GM (Chevrolet dealership currently has it) and a GMC dealership has serviced it since my ownership.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and was diagnosed with lower and upper fuel pump failure. The contact was informed that the lower and upper fuel pumps needed to be replaced. The independent mechanic made the contact aware of TSB Number: 13370A (Fuel Pump). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the TSB; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

The vehicle experienced complete lifter failure on cylinder number 4 bending the intake valve push rod thus shutting down the cylinder. The vehicle has 167,000 miles and is well maintained. The vehicle gave no warning signs that there was a problem. Simply driving down the road, normal engine temperature, normal oil pressure, the check engine light comes on at the same time the engine begins to mis-fire. Pulling over to the side of the road, I could hear lifter noise from the right bank of the engine. The dealership (Ocean Crest Chevrolet/GMC Warrenton, Oregon) confirmed the damage. The mechanic and the service manager both state the damage is a direct result of the GM cylinder deactivation system, and every single one they have repaired has been cylinder number 4. They further stated that GM has recommended a lifter change when repairing the damage, in other words, the lifters that were installed when the engine was originally built are defective. This damage occurs on both the 5.3 and the 6.2 with cylinder deactivation, and according to the dealership, it begins with cylinder number 4. This problem has also been responsible for cam damage which results in total engine replacement/rebuild due to metal contaminating the oil.

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle drove over a slight bump in the road. The contact stated that the vehicle bounced, and then there was an abnormal banging sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact recently had work completed on the exhaust system. The contact took the vehicle back to the independent mechanic who had performed the exhaust repair. The mechanic raised the vehicle on the lift and became aware that the rear passenger’s and driver's side cross members, supports for the shock absorbers, and the rear sub frame had extensive corrosion. The contact was advised by the mechanic that the banging sound was coming from the shock absorbers striking the bed of the truck while driving over the bump in the roadway. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 78,569.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with a short in the steering gear. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle’s frame has severely rusted to the point of structural compromise. My certified mechanic determined on December 10, 2024, that the frame could not pass the state safety inspection due to advanced corrosion. Welding is now required to restore structural integrity. The truck has remained inoperable and sidelined since that date. The frame is available for inspection upon request, and I have photos, repair invoices, and a mechanic’s written evaluation. This same frame was previously reworked by GMC twice: May 7, 2018 – Frame treated for premature rust. November 4, 2019 – Frame recoated after prior treatment failed due to improper descaling. Despite these reworks under GMC direction, the issue has progressed to a dangerous level. The structural integrity of the frame is compromised. A severely rusted frame puts occupants and others on the road at risk in the event of a collision, towing, or even regular driving. A weakened frame could lead to loss of vehicle control, failure to protect occupants in a crash, or catastrophic breakage of suspension or driveline components while in motion. Yes. The problem has been confirmed by an independent certified mechanic, who inspected the frame and advised that the rust is beyond surface level and requires welding to repair. They refused to weld during winter due to safety concerns and advised that the truck could not be driven or pass inspection in its current state. The vehicle was previously serviced under GMC’s direction in 2018 and 2019 by a GMC dealer (Weird GMC) to address early frame corrosion. However, the current failure has not yet been inspected by GMC directly since becoming undriveable in late 2024. I have reached out to GMC Customer Assistance and am awaiting a response. There were no dashboard warning lights or alerts for this issue. The only indications were visible signs of rust, which rapidly worsened after the 2019 rework. My mechanic noted signs of significant corrosion during routine servicing

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). On November 20, 2018, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened PE18-012 to investigate instances of sudden onset of a hard brake pedal that could result in extended stopping distance due to an issue with the brake assist vacuum pump in model year (MY) 2014 through 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 series pickup trucks and MY 2015 through 2016 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon SUVs.If the brake assist vacuum pump fails to operate as intended, the amount of brake power assist supplied to the driver can be significantly reduced, extending the subject vehicle stopping distance. GM stated that the root cause of pump failures was due to foreign debris such as oil sludge in the engine oil. GM stated that this debris can become trapped by the oil inlet filter screen. Under normal operation, this screen allows a small amount of oil into the brake vacuum pump. The foreign debris can, over time, clog the pump which can cause a loss of lubrication and a reduction in the amount of vacuum produced leading to a hard pedal and extended stopping distance.On December 13, 2018, GM issued a Special Coverage (N182202780) for the brake vacuum pump issue in MY 2014-2017 trucks and 2015-2017 SUVs on the K2XX platform for 6 years or 72,000 miles. Special Coverage repair includes the replacement of the vacuum pump and vacuum pump belt. Consumers received notification of the coverage via mail. On September 6, 2019, GM notified NHTSA that it was conducting safety recall 19V-645 which reprograms the electronic brake control module (EBCM) and included approximately 3.5 million trucks and SUVs. In October 2019, GM extended the terms of special coverage N182202780 to 10 years or 150,000 miles as well as now including the entire scope of recall 19V-645. In October 2020, GM expanded the scope of coverage N182202780 to include the MY 2018 Escalade and 2019 Tahoe.The remedy implemented in GM recall 19V-645 appears to be sufficient in addressing the safety-related concerns of this issue. Loss of vacuum assist now occurs at a progressive rate as well as there being a more timely warning of a brake problem to the driver through the driver information center (DIC). In view of the recall action and revision to the special coverage, this Preliminary Evaluation is closed. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
