Risk and remedy
Risk
If that happens, the vehicle may lose drive power to the wheels, and the front wheel may make contact with the fender or wheel well, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will measure the thickness of the front sub-frame and inspect the front sub-frame for corrosion damage and, if necessary, the front sub-frame will be replaced with a new sub-frame that incorporates additional holes in the upper and lower panels. if the front sub-frame does not require replacement, the dealer will add drainage holes to the sub-frame and will treat the sub-frame with rust-proofing material to stop the corrosion process. this procedure will be performed free of charge. the recall IS expected to begin during april 2009. owners may contact the hyundai customer assistance center at 1-800-633-5151.

Recently I had a situation where I was driving on county road way and my car suddenly collapsed and came to an immediate stop. To say the least, I was a little shook up. I got out the car and noticed that the driver side wheel had lodged against the wheel well. The car would go into gear but it was making a knocking noise so I turned it off. A driver of a green sedan car was behind me and I was trying to wave her around me but she stopped and assisted me into getting my car off the street by pushing my car while it was in neutral. I am only telling you this because there was nothing wrong with my car before this incident. I was told by hyundai thompson that my car would not start after it was towed there. I went there the next day and the car did start but it would not go into gear which was a surprise to me. I was told that they may have to check the transmission and talk to you to see if that damage would be cover under the recall for replacing the engine cradle. After hyundai thompson repaired my car I had to take it back for a roaring noise caused by the wheel bearing in the wheel that jammed against the wheel well when the axle snapped off the subframe. They also could not preform a wheel alignment. I also took it for a safety inspection and it failed due to some items I feel are related to the repair of replacing the subframe like the wheel bearing, the front end alignment, both front upper control arms and the outer tie rods missing cotter keys. I want to know my rights concerning this recall and I also want my car in the driving condition before this incident occurred. Case # 15551136 with hyundai.

Control arm completely separated/ broke from the subframe. Called hyundai as mechanic said this should have been included under a recall that came out several years ago for "because of a potential corrosion risk involving the front sub-frame...corrosion may progress and the forward mounting of the lower control arm may detach from the sub-frame. If that happens, the vehicle may lose driver power to the wheels. The front wheel may make contact with the fender or wheel well." "separation of the forward mounting of the lower control arm may increase the risk of a crash" this IS exactly what happened to my 17 year old daughter yesterday and fortunately she did not crash as she was not in a populated area, but it could have been much worse. Why IS this particular 2001 hyundai sonata not covered under this recall. It needs to be covered and covered asap. Please assist. Vehicle IS currently at columbia family auto care in jessup md 301-362-0777

Bad fuel vapor smell in cabin, no check eng light on. Checked eng light at auto zone anyway, code said vapor valve going to canister/dump after warm up. Hyundai by phone said canister needed replaced($400+). I live on disability ssi, too expensive. Took to small garage, after lifting, bottom of gas tank was wet with gas(by the exhaust). One guy went to access point for fuel tank for replacing fuel pump. A 6 inch rubber hose connecting the line out of the fuel tank connecting to metal rail fuel line bent at over 90 degrees, had a hole at the weakest point, in the inside bend. I am not the first owner, but [xxx], could only drive it after midnight in hot summer. Code explained car after warm up opens this valve to dump vapor build up in canister. Sounds right, code and everything, after I finally had them check for codes without check engine light not coming on. Such a cheap cost of a rubber hose could have easily been a braded flexible metal connection. [Xxx], I'm lucky. I gave hyundai dealership repair guy over the phone the engine code. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *tr

Was informed approximately 2006-2007 by good samaritan, bill osterhage, that his daughter's 2002 hyundai front tire rod axial broke d/t major corrosive issues with frame defects. He contacted an attorney for class action law suit to be started d/t safety issues to prevent death to others & repair frame to rob carey at rob.carey @att.net & amyw@hbsslaw.com. from 2006- until 2009 during routine oil changes, I asked kerry hyundai in alexandria, ky to check my frame d/t visual rust & about recall. Hyundai finally admitted after multiple complaints during routine maintenance in a letter to me on 6/24/09 that there was a recall on 4/16/09 and my frame to be replaced. 8/15/16 I lost control of my 2001 sonata, hyundai while driving on expressway during rush hour d/t major corrosive issues causing right rear tire rod to break. I did two 360 degree turns from fast lane to slow lane. Grace of god I didn't crash or cause any accidents. Filled report with hyundai dealer & corporation 8/16/16. Corporation stated that there IS corrosive settlement for front frame and another for the rear frame. Has been two weeks and hyundai corporation has not contacted me back, but stated compliant alone with pictures taken by dealer has been sent to "regional agent". Manager of service department from dealership at kerry hyundai alexandria, ky, jeff, stated "the matter IS out of his hands and representative from hyundai corporation IS to handle matter. Also, jeff, manager of service department at kerry hyundai, stated "damage to frame cost more than what care IS worth". Mechanic at kerry hyundai stated that "hyundai has major issue with frames, this IS the third one this month, of august, that has come in d/t corrosive defects, and one of the cars was only three years old". Please do something before someone IS killed. Life IS a precious gift and no monetary amount can replacement it.

My son was in an accident in which someone pulled out of a side road into his path of travel. The front of the hyundai from just past the grill on driver's side to entire passenger side hit the front driver wheel forward on the other car. Neither the steering wheel nor the passenger side airbag deployed in my hyundai. He hit with such force the steering wheel was bowed and steering column was broken along with the bottom of the dash where his knees hit.

My car has a rear rust problem that has left the car undriveable. The support for the wheel has rusted through and the rear wheels are tilting in. I did lose control of the car as it swayed for one side of the road to the other lane and back. My speed was about 45 mph on a two lane road with a spead limit of 45 to 55. When I would hit a bump in the road the car swerved uncontrolably the rust IS a serious safety problem that our government IS ignoring. I have had the front of the car in for the original recall for the front subframe. Did you know that this recall allows the mechanic to drill holes in the subframe to help the moister escape. Sounds like a temporary fix to a serious problem because the design did not allow for moisture problems. Yet the problem IS road salt according to the original law suit. But then why drill holes if the moisture IS coming from the outside. The holes are not drilled for any reason except to allow moisture to escape from a poorly designed sub frame assembly. Hyundai refuses to do anything about the cars inherent problem. Would someone please correct this problem before more people get terrified or die. Really this needs to get done by our government. This IS a serious safety problem. Like the pinto gas tank design.

While driving the car the wheel and assembly broke free from the frame of the car which was completely rusted and dropped the car to the ground pushed the wheel assembly wheel well. After researching the make and model their IS a recall pertaining to this issue but only applies to the salt belt. My car was originally sold and operated in virginia for 7 years. This issue with the sub frame IS the exact same issue as the recall but due to the car not being titled in the salt belt, even though it was driven through the so called salt belt, hyundai IS saying it IS not covered under the recall. I believe all cars that experience this issue should be covered under the warranty as it IS a major safety issue. I was lucky I wasn't going fast as it could have jeopardized my life or anyone else's that was traveling on the road. *tr

As I was driving down the road at apprx 30 mph. The car would de celerate. I would have to take my foot off the gas and then put back on to get the car to move. also at the same time the car would bang into gear from park and into reverse. I was told it needed a new transmission. the car was purchased new out of the showroom with 10 miles on it and 6 months later a new transmission. ( well we were told at the time it was brand new, I have since learned that it was a rebuilt) shame on the dealer for lying to customers. the car did ok till about 3 months ago. the car will decelerate and I have to do what I stated above. then cant get out of park and the traction control light comes on. this has happened numerous times. a new brake switch was put in and the car was fine for 7 full days and on the 8TH day same thing. so back we go to the dealers and they are really rude and not happy to see me at all . ( I don't' want to see them either) I was told same problem and another switch has been put in this IS the third one. the other issue IS we are not being notified of recalls. And the dealership IS so rude. will never own another one. *tr

Hyundai sonata 2011 push button start. I am the original owner of the vehicle. Yesterday I went into my car and proceeded to start my car. I had to push the start button three times before actually started up. This happened twice within 2 hours. 5 days prior my vehicle had been to the hyundai dealership for the recall on the stop lamp switch. An existing recall (nhtsa campaign number: 13v113000) indicates that for the 2011 hyundai sonata the stop lamp switch may not function correctly. They ,the dealership, performed the service and replaced the stoplamp switch. As result my car IS experiencing intermittent switch point contact with the push-button start feature. This IS crazy. *tr

I was trying to avoid an accident, as I swerved the car fish tailed. The driver side rear tire hit the curb, at which point the tire actually buckled under the car. I had to have the car towed to a shop. When the mechanic looked at the car at first we believed we only needed the rear tire assembly. We then discovered there was extensive damage to the sub frame assembly. He told me the sub frame was rusted and rotted and he believe that was why there was so much damage. then I was told by a friend there was a recall on the 2001 hyundai sonata sub frame. I later found out that it was the front sub frame. When reading the description of what was occurring in the recall of the front sub frame leads me to believe the same maybe occurring to the rear sub frame.

I was driving and within 15 minutes my hyundai ripped through 2 tires. luckily I figured something was up and was taking back roads when the second time it happened parts of the rubber from the tires were in the road. I had to have it towed and apparently the cradle sub frame was completely rusted apart causing the alignment and tire issues. I am in the salt belt states so it should be covered under the rust/corrosion recall 089. I understand it has many miles but it was running really well until this and should be covered in the recall. *tr

In a letter dated april 14, 2009, hyundai-kia america technical center, inc (hyundai) notified nhtsa that hyundaiis conducting a safety recall of model year (my) 1999 through 2004 hyundai sonata vehicles manufactured prior to november 20, 2003 that are registered and operated in the following salt belt states and the district of columbia: connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, and wisconsin.hyundai IS recalling the vehicles to remedy a condition where internal corrosion of the front subframe may lead to separation of the lower control arm at the forward mounting point and/or separation of the axle from the transaxle.this could result in a loss of vehicle control and/or vehicle disablement. The subframes will be inspected in the recalled vehicles using a procedure developed by hyundai to measure metal thickness.parts with perforations from corrosion or with metal below the specified thickness will be replaced with redesigned subframes.if the minimum metal thickness IS met, drainage holes and rust proofing material will be added to the existing subframe. Odi's analysis of complaint data revealed that 98% of the consumer complaints were from vehicles either originally sold or operated in saltbelt states. Similarly 99.7% of the warranty claims were from vehicles originally sold or operated in saltbelt states.odi identified 105 reports of lower control arm detachment and/or axle separation from the transaxle through analysis of warranty and complaint information and consumer interviews.one hundred three (103) of the 105 incidents involved vehicles in states covered by the recall.in addition to the subject vehicles, hyundai also noted in the april 14, 2009 letter that my 2001 through 2004 xg300 and xg350 were also being recalled as they were manufactured with subframes similar in design the subject vehicles.based on hyundai's decision to conduct a safety recall this engineering analysis IS closed.

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened preliminary evaluation, pe08-029, on april 22, 2008, based on 40 consumer complaints alleging front sub-frame corrosion in model year (my) 1999 through 2002 hyundai sonata vehicles.complaints describe severe corrosion of the vehicle sub-frame in the area where the right-front lower control arm IS attached.in some vehicles, sub-frame corrosion has caused complete or partial detachment of the control arm, resulting in wheel collapse or separation. In response to odi's information request letter for pe08-029, hyundai provided owner complaints, field reports, and warranty claim data for approximately 197,906 my 1999 through 2002 subject vehicles sold or leased in the united states.the base warranty for the subject vehicles IS 60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first.according to hyundai, prolonged exposure to the road salts may result in corrosive damage to the subframe.hyundai redesigned the sub-frame early in the my 2004 production (november 2003) to address problems with premature corrosion of the crossmember near the right-front suspension attachment. Odi's analysis of both complaint and warranty data for the my 1999 through 2002 sonata vehicles shows that the failure rates are significantly higher in salt belt states, which account for approximately 50 percent of vehicle sales and over 90 percent ofcomplaints and warranty claims related to the alleged defect (note:for purposes of this investigation the salt belt includes connecticut, delaware, the district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).according to hyundai, the alleged defect results in a progressive loss of structural integrity of the subframe and there IS ample opportunity for the problem to be detected (by inspection, steering feel or tire wear anomalies) and repaired before it reaches a state where a safety related incident may occur.hyundai identified 4 allegations of vehicle disablement and 1 allegation of a crash; where the lower control arm broke from the vehicle while driving at 55 mph and the driver lost control and drove into a yard.there were no reported injuries.odi received a separate allegation of a crash, where the complainant alleged that while driving around a slight curve at 65 mph on a freeway, the vehicle sub-frame fractured and the driver lost control of the vehicle and went off the road.again, no injuries were reported.approximately one-third of the complaints to odi allege that the sub-frame corrosion resulted in a loss of control and/or a vehicle disablement due to wheel collapse or separation.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea08-016) covering my 1999 through early-2004 hyundai sonata vehicles in salt-belt states and equipped with the subject sub-frame design to further assess the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

- 10251285This bulletin contains information about the proper removal of the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all models. If the protective cover is not removed correctly, there is a possibility of the rubber insert and rail spring becoming partially separated on the inner side of the wiper blade, which could lead to poor wiping performance and/or possible scratching of the windshield glass. Follow the procedure in this bulletin to properly remove the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all new wiper blades.
- 10247189This bulletin provides important checkpoint guidelines when performing engine oil and filter change services.
- 10235566Hyundai applies a Paint Protection Film (PPF) on new vehicles before delivery to dealerships. It provides a barrier between the paint and contaminants, such as rail dust, acid rain, and industrial fallout. In rare cases, the paint can become clouded under the PPF. These spots are the result of moisture trapped between the PPF and the paint.
- 10230904This bulletin provides information regarding condensation related to the accumulated moisture in the headlamp, rear combination lamp, daytime running lamp (DRL), or fog lamp. This TSB illustrates the various causes of condensation inside the lamp assembly. Lamp assembly replacement is NOT necessary in most cases. This condition can be eliminated by turning on the lamps with the engine running for several minutes or during normal driving operation.
- 10217258Effective June 2, 2008, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110 (FMVSS 110) established a threshold for correcting load carrying capacity information indicated on tire placards when vehicle weight has been increased before retail sale. This limit is the lesser of 1.5% of GVWR or 100 pounds. If the total added weight exceeds the lesser of the limit, a label must be added to the driver-side B-pillar within 25mm (1 inch) of the original tire placard.
- 10217251Follow the guidelines outlined in this bulletin to inspect and clean or replace certain components of the engine intake system accordingly during engine short block or sub-assembly replacement.
- 10196546Hyundai approves only the ATF, DCT gear oil and IVT gear oil specified in the vehicles owners manual. Use of other ATF may result in improper shift quality or other drivability conditions. Use of other DCT and IVT gear oil may result in reduced durability. Hyundai does not approve the use of any aftermarket ATF or gear oil additives.
