While driving down a side road at around 25mpg, the left front wheel made a pop sound and abruptly stopped. When my daughter got out to investigate she saw that the wheel was folded under the car. She had it towed and we learned the tie-rod control arm failed and broke the shaft. Thank god she was not on the highway. We paid 1200.00 dollars to get her back on the road and 4 months later the passenger side IS now making a loud squealing sound when you turn the wheel. Now I learn that it seems the whole front end of these cars are defective and dangerous! Oh, and the heat stopped working and will cost 500.00 to fix.
TL* the contact owns a 2000 dodge stratus. While driving 30 mph, a loud grinding noise emitted from the vehicle. In addition, the vehicle failed to accelerate. The contact coasted to the side of the road and noticed fluid coming from the front passenger wheel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the lower control arm and ball joint fractured and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 197,000.
Vehicle stalled at high speed. Had fuel filter replaced by dodge dealer in marietta, ohio. Dealer did not check fuel pump while tank removed from automobile. Fuel pump was cause of stalling. invoice # docs155552

Starting march I had problems with turning the wheel and I took car to get oil and ask mechanic to check power steering fluid. Im told it IS full and that they do not why I have turn the wheel as if I have no power steering. Each month I get someone check power steering and told it IS full. I have to turn thee opposite way when getting out of a park. Sometimes I back in park in order to get out. Then I start having problems with car making noise and car sound wheel going to break. Electrical problems..i have no horn, inside lights, air and radio due to I took fuse out because horn blowing, lights and locks going up and down. *tr
My dodge stratus started blowing horn without me touching. Everytime I turn the wheel the horn blows. Then two days later the light came in the car would not go off. Then locks start going up and down and door make beep as if a door his open. I had to remove the fuses to stop horn from blowing, cut inside lights off and stop locks from going up and down. The car still makes beep noise as if door open whole time driving and stops and start back when I hit a bump. My front wheel making a noise as if the wheel IS going to break off on the passenger side. It IS also drinking gas as if it IS leaking. I dont see any gas on the ground but I can smell fumes off and one and sometimes under the hood. It IS like I am losing gas pressure because car stalls and I am losing gas somewhere. *tr
Drove car approximately 10 miles to store. Was in parking lot, pulling into a parking space, noticed smoke from under hood. woman in lot stopped and told me my car was on fire. backed out of parking spot to center of aisle. car fully engulfed in flames within minutes. cause of fire not yet determined. *Tr

After driving my car a friend went outside and seen smoke coming out from under the hood.she called me and I ran to the car and I seen fire under the front wheel's. Friends sprayed water on the hood and I opened it up a little and they sprayed the fire and put it out. By this time the top of the motor was burnt bad. Everything on top needs to be replaced, it was caused by the high pressure hose on the powersteering. I found out that it had a recall on the hose so I called dodge corp. And they gave me a case # and to take it to my dealer so I did. Then the corp. Office called me today and said it's been to long this should have been done by the last owner and hung up. I bought this car oct.14 of this year and this happened on the 31. How am I to know that this was going to happen in 18 day's. I paid a lot of money for this car and I think. The computer can tell you the recall and how to get it fixed; but you try to find somewhere on here on what to do when there IS a recall and it done what it said it would do and you didn't know about it until it did it. I need help I don't have the money to fix it. I took out a loan to get it. *tr
I need some one to investigate a recall part on a 2000 dodge stratus on a power steering leak that cause a fire under the bottom to the top. And the dealership IS not telling the truth on what cause the fire. *tr
Lower ball joint/ control arm defective. No extenuating circumstances or unusual wear on the vehicle to precipitate this problem. The same defective part was seen on other 2000 dodge stratus vehicles with applicable recalls. My vehicle has the same problem but based on my vin number the recall does not yet apply. the problem has been diagnosed at steve white dodge dealership in newton, nc. The parts are still in place on my vehicle at this point. *tr
2000 dodge stratus engine fire. after parking the car in the driveway, I began to smell and see smoke coming from the engine of the car. Determining that it was on fire, I backed it out of the driveway (luckily the driveway was sloped) to get it a way from the house. *Tr
My car IS leaking gas, and the fuel neck has rusted. Apparently there IS a national back order on this product and I am unable to get it until october 30TH. When I asked the dealer what I should do about this problem he said there are many people waiting on this same part and that all I can do IS wait for the part..meanwhile my car IS leaking gas and unsafe for my children to ride in...if a part IS via the dealership only it should be available for instances just like this! How am I supposed to get to work? How am I supposed to take my kids to day care? I don't think I'll ever buy another chrysler because of this horrible customer service! I guess if the car blew up because of the gas leak it'd be more of a concern! *Tr
Had dodge stratus 2000 ES for ten years. mileage at approximately 53,000. This year when interior hot the following do not work: windshield wipers, dash gauges, security system, dash indicator for transmission gear, cool air through air conditioner. sometimes while driving this problems happens and am unable to see what gear car IS in, what speed, fuel left, wipers not functioning all which are safety issues. when interior cool, all functions return. worked with a good mechanic who diagnosed faulty body control module also called a multi function module. $750 dollars later, car ok. *Tr
My 2000 dodge stratus SE I have had for about 5YRS now excellent running car but has started making its own decisions when it comes to cold air in the summer, mileage, door locks & speed. If you want all gauges & door locks plus cold air in the summer time then you need to make sure your windows are rolled down and you are parked in the shade. If not you will drive around until the sun goes down and the car IS cool enough for the gauges and air to kick back on. I have talked to several mechanics about this and no one can come up with a solution for it. I love my car and I want to know what IS going on!!!!!! *Tr

I had a 2000 dodge stratus SE which caught on fire in my driveway after my daughter returned home with it. She came running inside saying it was smoking so when we went to look in was on fire, with flames shooting out of the hood. I call 911 while my husband and a neighbor sprayed the car with a hose. Everything under the hood was melted. When we called the dodge dealership they pretty much laughed at us saying yeah there IS a recall for the pressure steering hose which can leak and cause a fire. But since you didn't come get it fixed too bad, but if you bring it in now we will replace the hose for you!!! After many calls to the main dodge number that IS on the recall on their website they finally left me a voice mail stating we sent a notice too bad. I am so thankful that nobody was hurt. My teenage daughter had just gotten home from school. It would have caught fire there who knows what could have happened. I have lived in a different state since buying the car so that IS why I didn't get the notice. It saddens me to think that IS all they have to do IS send out a notice when a fire will result if not taken care of, and they don't care. *Tr
Front passenger tie rod on 2000 dodge keeps breaking. Have replaced tie rod 4 times, but 2 separate mechanics are telling us that the only reason that tie rods would break repeatedly IS because of a defective ball joint. Tie rod has snapped next to ball joint every time. It IS already cracked and about to break again. It has resulted in several near accidents for us and once being stranded at a gas station an hour from home. The last time it broke was november 2009. The ball joint IS the original that came on the car. *Tr
2000 dodge stratus, had a leakage in the fuel line, in june 2009 and had it repaired, than transmission was going out, needed a new engine, car wouldn't go past 50mph without jerking and still was a gas-hogger, cost more to fix the car so had to have it salvaged couldn't afford the repairs, and my friend also had a dodge stratus same year and had the same problem I did and she also had to salvaged her car. *Tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
Odi has received 29 reports of engine compartment fires that appear to be related to power steering hose leakage in model year (my) 1999 and 2000 chrysler cirrus, dodge stratus and plymouth breeze vehicles (ja-cars) equipped with 2.4L engines.these reports indicate that the fire resulted from a power steering hose leak or that it occurred after an extended drive and shortly after being parked - conditions consistent with ignition of power steering fluid on a hot engine or exhaust surface during the vehicle hot soak period. On january 6, 2006, daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) notified nhtsa of a safety defect on my 1999 and 2000 ja-cars built from july 1, 1998 to july 31, 2000 and equipped with 2.4L engines (recall 06v-001).the notification stated that ?the high pressure power steering hose may prematurely heat, age and develop a leak. Power steering fluid leakage in the presence of an ignition source may result in an under hood fire.dcc indicated that it was aware of 94 complaints and field reports that may be related to this condition when it made the defect determination.to remedy the defect condition, dcc will replace the high pressure power steering hose on the affected vehicles with a new part made from a hose material with increased heat resistance capability. Consequently, this investigation IS closed.odi will monitor the effectiveness of the remedy and take further action if warranted.
On june 29, 2005, odi opened preliminary evaluation pe05-036 to investigate complaints of engine compartment fires in model year (my) 1999-2000 chrysler cirrus, dodge stratus and plymouth breeze passenger cars (ja cars). The ja cars were introduced in my 1995 and ended with my 2000.they were produced with 2.0L, 2.4L and 2.5L engines.the incident data in the failure report summary of this resume are for subject vehicle engine compartment fires for all causes. According to daimlerchrysler, evidence collected from field inspections of fire incident vehicles indicate that fluid leakage from the high pressure power steering hose IS the most likely cause of the fires in the subject vehicles.the subject high pressure power steering hose IS used in ja cars with both the 2.4L and 2.0L engines in my 1995 through 2000.the fire incident rate in the my 1999 through 2000 ja vehicles with 2.4L engines IS significantly higher than in the prior model year vehicles using that engine and in any of the vehicles with the 2.0L or 2.5L engines.daimlerchrysler IS continuing its investigation of the issue and has provided periodic updates to odi. An engineering analysis (ea05-019) has been opened to further assess the scope and frequency of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.
There are no injuries or fatalities associated with this alleged defect.while conducting this investigation, odi found that the subject cinches meet the load bearing requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard 208, and that many of the reported failures were due to incorrect child safety seat installations. Additionally, the report rate IS low (1.60/100k).the information available fails to establish the existence of a defect trend at this time.further allocation of agency resources to this issue IS unwarranted and the preliminary evaluation IS being closed.
